Martha had a great idea. Xavier had a bigger dream. Roger knew what to call them. The story of the Cabbage Patch Kids will surprise you. Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is ... Well, it's us. But we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients, so here's one of those. [Colair Cooling & Heating Ad] Dave Young: Hey, welcome back to another edition of The Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here, alongside Stephen Semple. We're talking about empires being built, and people building fortunes and all these, I assume, serious business topics, until Stephen whispers in my ear just before we start that we're going to talk about Cabbage Patch Kids. Stephen Semple: That's right. Dave Young: I feel like this happened before my siblings and little sister's ... Between the time that I had sisters that would have had Cabbage Patch Kids or children that would have had Cabbage Patch Kids, because I think the whole thing was done by the time I had kids. Stephen Semple: You missed it? Dave Young: It happened in that liminal space between being a brother with sisters that had Cabbage Patch Kids, or being a dad. It was a big, big thing, and then it wasn't. Stephen Semple: You just missed it is what you're telling me. Dave Young: Yeah, yeah. When did they start? Stephen Semple: The big thing is when they got really big was really in the '80s is when they were massive. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: They set ... There were three years there where they set every toy sale record known to mankind. They sold over 130 million units. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: They're still around today, they're just not a really huge, massive thing. They're actually one of the longest running doll lines in the United States. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: But yeah, there was a period there where they were like, holy smokes, just crazy, crazy, crazy big. Dave Young: Just the fact that I know about them. I was a dumb kid in his 20s with no reason to know about them in the '80s. But I did. They were a cultural phenomenon. Stephen Semple: They were. I remember seeing on television, you would see shots of lineups at toy stores, and people going nuts trying to buy these things. It was really, really, really crazy. Dave Young: Cultural references, Tonight Show and all kinds of things. They were everywhere. Stephen Semple: Oh, yeah. They really were. They were created by a lady by the name of Martha Nelson Thomas. She was an art student. She went to the Louisville School of Art, she graduated there in '71. She wanted to create dolls that would touch people. They were handmade and they were each different. She was an artist. In art school, one of the things she did is this whole idea of what's called soft sculpture, which is about using sewing techniques and things along that lines, to create shapes, and soft items, and pillows, and things along that lines. If we think back to the '60s and '70s, dolls were all mass-produced from plastic. In the '70s, we started getting this folk art movement rising and this return to more organic forms. What she started to do was creating this dolls where the features were created by stitching. This created something soft. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: And cuddly. She called them doll babies. When she was selling them, she included an adoption certificate, she named each baby and would write down some of the characteristics. Things that the baby liked and disliked, and things along that lines. Dave Young: Right. Stephen Semple:

TwoSistas welcomed to today's podcast on this FantabulousFriday, May 5, 2023 (Cinco de Mayo), Dr Amanda Adkins. Dr. Adkins is a physician double board certified in Internal Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine. She was trained at University of Louisville School of Medicine. She is the CEO/Owner of Enlightenment Health and Wealth. She helps women who are overweight prevent and possibly reverse chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. She obviously is very passionate about this topic because she was an obese teenager who has a family history of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. As early as 6th grade, Dr. Adkins wanted to be a physician. As she progressed through high school, it wasn't until she had to step on the scale where she realized the fate of her wellness was truly up to her. She began a quest to become “healthy”. Her new healthy wellness plan began as a vegetarian then a vegan lifestyle. She felt empowered as she began losing weight but she considered herself to be a vegan junk food addict. It wasn't until she started on her education quest to become a physician when she heard a doctor at a conference state “you cannot exercise a bad habit.” Something within her clicked! When Dr. Adkins looks back at her journey and what she would tell the young “Amanda”, she was very vulnerable and teared up. While we may be predisposed to certain genetic factors which contribute to various diseases, Dr. Adkins shared that we can turn those genes on and off. We would love for some of ours to be turned off but our journeys continue and as we evolve, we can certainly partake in our own wellness journey in a way that feels attainable. Personally, Janis loves attainable, but mostly cookies and chips! To learn more about Dr. Adkins and to connect with her further, please check out her website and other social media platforms: dramandamd@gmail.com https://www.dramandamd.com https://www.instagram.com/dramandaadkins https://www.facebook.com/dramandaadkins https://youtube.com/@DrAmandaAdkins Thank you Dr. Adkins - we can't wait to have you back on the TwoSistas podcast! What does health care have to do with human trafficking? This week we talk with Olivia Mittel, MD, MS, who is Associate Dean for Medical Student Affairs and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. We discuss how research shows that a majority of human trafficking victims come into contact with the healthcare system, which provides an opportunity for healthcare professionals to identify victims and provide support. Olivia describes efforts to teach medical students and providers how to use trauma-informed communication with patients and identify patients who are being trafficked. After listening to this episode, Olivia's “One Thing” call to action is for listeners to educate themselves about the warning signs of trafficking. Dear Esteemed Academic, we're reaching out to you as an eminent scholar in your field! This week we talk with Dr. John Chenault, PhD, MA, MSLS who is a former medical librarian and currently Associate Professor & Director of Anti-Racism Initiatives in Undergraduate Medical Education at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. We discuss predatory publishing, which is an exploitative practice that charges authors to publish scholarly journal articles without providing important publishing services like peer review. Dr. Chenault suggests that listeners can work with librarians to identify such exploitative journals before publishing, and he describes resources that faculty can use to help identify predatory publishers. After listening to this episode, Dr. Chenault calls for listeners to be mindful of this industry and its negative impact to our profession. Learn more about predatory publishing with Retraction Watch, the Predatory Publishing blog, and see if your university has access to Cabell's International. Along with meeting each other through different Louisville bands we had played with over the years, (The Last Origin, Blank Agenda, The Balrogs) 7 out of our 9 members met through attended the University of Louisville School of Music, studying everything from jazz drumming to orchestral conducting. John, Misaki, and William met through playing in the UofL symphony orchestra together while Kenny, Matt, Christian, and Sam met through playing in the UofL Jazz department. John and Kenny (having known eachother through TLO) had been kicking around different demos/concepts starting in late 2020 and eventually wanted to form the band that would realize all of these ideas. The band gradually grew over the course of 2021-2022 by inviting in mutual friends from the UofL school of Music as well as friends from other bands in the area. While we have spent much of the past two years writing, practicing, and recording, we've put together a unique live show that we can't wait to perform. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tophillrecording/support

Ajmal Zemmar, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, discusses the crossroads of neurosurgery and the end of life. Even with the amazing medical advancements in recent history, it is difficult to get an accurate picture of what is going on in the brain. Especially at the end of life, much of what is undergone in the brain remains a mystery. Since many folks do not want extensive tests at the end of their life, studying their brains becomes quite challenging. However, with tools like EEGs and other techniques, we can study various situations in which someone passes away, allowing us to better understand when life actually ends. Welcome to PICU Doc On Call, A Podcast Dedicated to Current and Aspiring Intensivists. I'm Pradip Kamat and I'm Kate Phelps, a second-year pediatric critical care fellow joining Pradip and Rahul today! I'm Rahul Damania and we are coming to you from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta - Emory University School of Medicine. Today we are honored to have Dr. John Berkenbosch- senior author of the Prevention and Management of Pain, Agitation, Neuromuscular Blockade, and Delirium in Critically Ill Pediatric Patients with consideration of the ICU Environment and Early Mobility (PANDEM) guidelines recently published in February 2022 issue of the Pediatric Critical Care journal. Dr. Berkenbosch is a Professor of Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, and continues to be nationally recognized as an expert in pediatric procedural sedation with multiple publications relating to sedation practices, particularly novel uses of procedural sedation medications and regimens. He currently also serves as co-chair for the American College of Critical Care Medicine's Task Force guidelines for sedation and analgesia in critically ill children which we will be discussing in today's episode. Dr. Berkenbosch's research interests have primarily focused on pediatric procedural sedation and implementation of technology advances in Pediatric Critical Care and have resulted in 57 publications as well as several book chapters Rahul: Dr. Berkenbosch welcome to the PICU Doc ON call podcast. I would also like to point out that the free full access to the PANDEM guidelines is available online athttp://pccmjournal.org ( pccmjournal.org) Dr. Berkenbosch: Thanks Rahul and Pradip. I am excited to be on the PICU Doc on Call Podcast to discuss the PANDEM guidelines. I want to first start by giving a huge shout-out to all the team members who contributed to these guidelines' development. This is a topic about which I am quite passionate but also one that provides much-needed guidance regarding pain/agitation/delirium to our entire pediatric critical care community! KATE: Dr. Berkenbosch, the rationale for the development of the PANDEM guidelines was the high variability in pediatric sedation and analgesia. Can you speak to this variability and why it was important to address that variability? That is a great question, the variability has been one of the key motivators in the creation of these guidelines. We also wanted to develop a guideline that was broader in scope than what was currently available. The ICU Liberation bundle provided a paradigm for liberating critically ill patients from mechanical ventilation and the ICU environment and as we delved into developing these guidelines, we realized that many elements of the ICU liberation bundle aligned very closely with PICU sedation and analgesia so it made imminent sense to incorporate all of these topics into the guidelines, an acknowledgment if you will, that PICU liberation & sedation go hand in hand! Absolutely, as we have stated in our prior episodes, the paradigm is: intubate → ventilate → liberate, and sedation/analgesia is intertwined in each of these processes. Dr. Berkenbosch, as we get into the guidelines, can you please highlight how the search strategy for these guidelines were derived? Of course, this was a remarkable group effort solicited by the Society of Critical Care Medicine. We were initially modeled after the adult PAD (pain, agitation, and delirium) guidelines task force but, as described already, extended beyond that to include Pediatric Pain, Agitation, Neuromuscular Blockade, and Delirium in addition to the PICU Environment and Early Mobility. It was comprised of 29 national experts who collaborated over a ten-year period. The full task force gathered annually in person during the Society of Critical Care Medicine Congress for progress reports and further strategizing with the final face-to-face meeting occurring in...
