Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is a book that frankly made us tired: Survival Mom: How to Prepare Your Family for Everyday Disasters and Worst-Case Scenarios by Lisa Bedford. Can't we leave this to the survival dads? Mentioned: How to Survive History: How to Outrun a Tyrannosaurus, Escape Pompeii, Get Off the Titanic, and Survive the Rest of History's Deadliest Catastrophes by Cody Cassidy and a past discussion on how we'd do in a zombie apocalypse (hint: not well).Terri's random recommendation is a comedy special from Brett Goldstein, of Ted Lasso and Shrinking. It's called The Second-Best Night of Your Life and we both enjoyed it, although we'd slap a content warning on it for profanity (this is Roy Kent, after all). Mentioned: Goldstein telling Seth Meyers about how he got his role in Ted Lasso. In the archives, we checked in on an episode from 2020 on laws of parenting.Next week's lineup: Lost S3 E3, "Further Instructions," on Tuesday, June 17Duster S1 E4 on Wednesday, June 18Weekly roundup on Thursday, June 19Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! John Trupin and Isabelle Minasian sit at a crossroads with the Mariners, freshly under .500 after an eerily familiar two week tailspin has negated their sterling start to the season. There are many suspects, many culprits but few answers for a team that once flirted with designs of the AL West crown. Yet all that is still on the table if the offense can regain it's lost April form and the pitching, perhaps aided by the return of a true star this week, can steady the ship. Today, we are in our final week of our series Get Off Your Donkey 2.0. The first iteration of this series was back in January 2023, when we looked at ways people in our congregation were “getting off their donkeys” and putting their faith into action. The concept of “getting off your donkey” comes from Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan—a man is traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho and he finds someone lying on the side of the road—robbed, beaten, and left for dead. Instead of continuing on his way (like those who came before him), he gets off his donkey, cleans up the man's wounds, and takes him to an inn where he can recover. Jesus tells this parable to illustrate that our faith is not just about what we believe, but also about what we do—our faith calls us to get off our donkey and care for others, particularly those in need. This spring, we brought back this idea of “get off your donkey” as a way to acknowledge that sometimes, faith-in-action looks like meeting immediate needs—cleaning someone's wounds or giving them food to eat. Other times, faith-in-action looks like doing the personal work—thinking critically about what we personally believe about a subject and how that impacts the world around us, as well as the systemic work—advocating so that all might have the things they need to thrive, working to change systems that cause harm. We've brought in a few of our United Methodist social principles to illustrate this personal and systemic work. The social principles are statements made by the greater church that call each of us to engage with the world around us—to compassionately work for justice for each and every one of God's creations—just like Jesus. Today, as we celebrate our graduates, we are taking a look at how our faith calls us to advocate for worker justice.

"Wouldn't we all like tot ell her to shut up? I'd like to tell her to shut up!" says Kelly of Christy, who only a few episodes in is already starting to test Kelly's patience. But just about everyone else is testing the ALDC's patience on the second half of "Kiss or Get Off the Pot", mostly Abby for continuing to make everyone uncomfortable. It's the day of competition and the girls are primed to steal the show. Cathy's team might have the better dance, but at In10city the ALDC is always favored regardless. So Abby's focus falls primarily on Maddie and Gino's duet, paying extra attention they nail their kiss. It's clear Maddie is still uncomfortable with being asked to kiss Gino, yet somehow Abby manages to make it even more uncomfortable somehow! Christy however is preoccupied with fighting with Mickey over Gino's place on the team.Tune-in as well this week to hear some juicy behind the scenes insults that didn't make the final cut of the episode!Quotes“Now I can do all kinds of crazy s***t because I won't pee myself!" (04:34-4:37 | Kelly)“Our kids get in trouble for everything and she cried over a meatball sub!"” (13:38-13:42 | Christi)“Oh my god drink! There's not a headband to be seen but drink!" "It was the most unhinged 15 minutes I've ever witnessed in my life," recounts Christi in reference to "The Sandwich Incident". But the incident happened entirely off-screen! It's one of Christi's most cherished Dance Moms memories, one she has thought about monthly for over a decade! So on the first half of "Kiss or Get Off the Pot", come for Abby's insistence of making children do things they're uncomfortable with, stay for a classic behind the scenes Abby meltdown. The Select team is out this week so the production doesn't have to pay them, but Sarah H and Christy stick around to claim the top spot on the Pyramid. The rest of the placements seem arbitrary at best, Abby is mostly upset that the girls cried after coming in second. The moms point out their attitude probably had more to do with their teacher making a separate team to upstage them after they were on a long win streak.Abby announces they're going to be going head to head once again with Cathy at In10city Dance in Ohio. To spite Cathy she enlists the help of Gino, one of Cathy's former dancers, to perform a duet with Maddie. While the pairing was obviously designed with Maddie, Abby holds auditions for the duet to give the appearance of fairness, but ends up just insulting most of the girls until she arrives at Maddie anyways. Maddie does not like that Abby is insisting she kiss Gino for the performance as it'll be her first kiss, but Abby seems dead set on making it happen for some reason. The other thing Abby is dead set on is making it clear she was on Dancing with the Stars. Not only does she keep bringing it up, but she even themes the group dance around it! Quotes“Everyone was cracking up that you said these were all the books you read. I lied! I lied!" (01:32-1:43 | Christi & Kelly)“That was Kelly's favorite thing about Candy Apples. They would say Candy Apples and Kelly's eyes would light up. She'd go, 'Can we get beef Jerky?!'” (09:59-10:06 | Christi)“I'm so disappointed that 2012 Christi didn't say sloppy seconds. I need to go back and tell Abby she was picking up Cathy's sloppy seconds. That was a golden opportunity to use those words." (24:36-24:46 | Christi)“The children knew that Abby was crying over the sandwich." This episode features an interview with Alison Lange Engel, CEO of Ceros, a company that provides tools and services that empower companies to create interactive content with unparalleled ease and efficiency, driving customer engagement. In this episode, Alison discusses the power of interactive content and how to differentiate your brand amidst increasing noise. She and Ian dive into the importance of being unique and how creativity is a competitive advantage. Key Takeaways:Creativity is a competitive advantage, even more so as copying assets gets easier with AI. CMOs need to get their teams off the treadmill and make space for creativity, inspiration and ideation. The sea of sameness is real, especially in B2B, and the world continues to get noisier. You have to disrupt and have conviction behind your big bets; check box marketing won't cut it anymore. Originality is as important as ever, but teams have to find ways to do more with less and won't succeed if they are only trying to differentiate themselves through words, tone, or processes.Quote: You're going to miss the opportunity to differentiate and tell a unique story, right, if you have your team on a treadmill constantly. And that's how most people feel. But, as a leader, you've got to create space for it and find inspiration. Encourage your team to bring ideas. We would bring magazine clips in. People would bring in their pets. People brought in old, you know, pictures, family mementos, what matters to them. You've gotta get to the heart and soul of what you're trying to do to kind of unlock your team and have your company, you know, feel fresh, feel modern, and have people take risks, right? Great companies take risks and you have to kind of create that environment to do that. The brands that don't, are in trouble and the brands that do are the ones that win.Episode Timestamps: *(05:50) The Trust Tree: Experiences over static content*(25:36) The ROI of creativity*(36:29) Advice for CMOs on creativity and boldnessSponsor:Pipeline Visionaries is brought to you by Qualified.com. In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: I am a senior software engineer in a big tech/faang company and this week is my first ever on call rotation. My team is doing a lot of CI work, monitoring pipelines and support queues during on call. It is probably not as much of a hassle as on call for product teams, but for me personally on call was the nearest I have ever been to hell. Our on call is not the regular getting pinged when something goes wrong, instead we have to manually monitor a dashboard 12 hours constantly for 7 days as the alarming is quite fuzzy. I am the only EU remote worker that has to adopt to the on call PST timezone. That means, my on call shift goes from 3pm-3am in my timezone. It is day 5/7 and I am down 24 energy drinks already, cause this was the only way to stay wake. Knowingly, that this would be just a short-term tradeoff against health, I am now living through the most explosive diarrhea I have ever had. On top, I am sleep derived, dizzy and every body part hurts. That would already be terrible on its own, yet I additionally have a young family, with a 4 year old and a toddler. The on call week, has not only been though on me, but especially also on my children and wife. I don't have time for the kids at all and my wife is doing 100% of everything at the moment, including waking up, breakfast, bringing our son to kindergarten, cooking, cleaning, playing, everything. She is also quite exhausted therefore. Besides On Call, my job has been great and a huge monetary opportunity that is very rare in the EU, therefore quitting just because of 4-5weeks/year is not an option I am considering. Yet, I am wondering if there could be any way of smuggling myself out of the on call rotation. I have seen, that a staff level engineer on our team is not participating in the rotation, but that might be because he got a lot going on with other teams as well. A listener named bebop asks, Is your average “Big Tech” dev “better” than a random dev selected from a large non-technology company? I can't help but feel that if I want to level up my career, I'm going to have to either move into big tech or some unicorn startup.
