Katherine James is an award-winning author of fiction and nonfiction. She is an extraordinary writer, a visual artist, just an insanely creative person, and I was floored by her book A Prayer for Orion: A Son's Addiction and A Mother's Love. Addiction seems like one of those things that is hidden in plain sight, a reality, not just an idea, and something we are all hungry to put language around so we can figure out how to face it, straight on. I loved learning from Katherine, and I'm so grateful she let us eavesdrop on her life and experience and wisdom. Katherine James is the award-winning author of the novel, Can You See Anything Now? which won Christianity Today's book of the year and was longlisted for the Doris Bakwin Prize, as well as a memoir, A Prayer for Orion, about her son's journey through a heroin overdose. Her short stories, essays, and poetry have been published in a variety of journals and anthologies, and her short story Fishhook, was a finalist for a Narrative Spring Prize.  She has an MFA from Columbia University where she received the Felipe P. De Alba fellowship and taught undergraduate fiction. Presently she's working on a novel about a mute girl growing up in the Vietnam era. Ukraine has been called the TikTok War. In this episode JJ explores how HALO uses social media, geographic information systems and unmanned arial vehicles to plot battles and bombs to help locate and prioritise clearance. Our Libyan colleague Hasam talks about how he pioneered the use of Facebook to map mine contamination in his home country, using ‘landmine' and ‘projectile' as keywords and zooming in on satellite images to geolocate dangerous remnants of war. Capability officer Andro Mathewson then explains how he developed Hasam's idea in the early days of Putin's invasion to create a map of Ukraine that shows contamination based on Twitter and Telegram posts and is updated daily by a team of social media 'detectives'. Meanwhile, drones specialist Katherine James joins from Cuito Cuanavale in Angola, where her use of drones on minefields also identifies watering holes for wildlife... as well as capturing a group of suspicious young men with elephant tusks in a canoe. Going through terrible trauma and depression herself, Katherine James looked for a book that could help her to become her own hero...but could not find such a book. So, she wrote it herself. As she wrote her book, she realised there is indeed a practical way of getting through trauma, by taking this Hero's journey of self-discovery.The Story of Hope is especially relevant to these unpredictable times, where our lives and dreams have become locked down. It guides those locked in despair from what feels like a grey, empty existence to a place of colour and confidence: the life we are meant to lead. It is always darkest before dawn, but our own story of hope lies just over the horizon. If the hero of The Story of Hope overcame incredible hardship to find hers, then so can we.

Today's Out of the Ordinary Book: Can You See Anything Now? written and read by Katherine James Visiting Author, Katherine James shares a reading from her latest book!Katherine James has also written about her son's herion addiction and this article articulates the book well. Key Conversation Points: There are trigger warnings of failed suicide attempt, self harm and drug abuse but you can trust this author to lead us gently with empathy and hope. Christie explains that Katherine James, "explores the painful depths of human hearts but this author is someone we can trust." Katherine's debut novel is placed in a small town with raw, deep and intriguing characters from the first page on.  Margie is the painter who is suicidal and her husband is the therapist who doesn't think he's making a difference.  It's the evangelical neighbor that doesn't give up on her people that will become so endearing.  You'll find parts of your people peppered through these pages and it'll make an impact.   Although we see the brokenness and pain of real life, we also see the grace and miracles of real life too.  You won't be able to put this Winner of the Christianity Today 2018 Fiction Book Award page turner down as your curiousity and adrenline make you stay up late to finish it.   Podcast links: Click here to join the conversations we have with listeners every week around the podcast. _______ Sponsor appreciation: We're so grateful to partner with show sponsors that keep making our work possible. www.graceenoughpodcast.com Katherine James and I discuss her journey of loving her son through his addiction and the magnificence of God during some of the darkest days. Questions Katherine and I Discussed: (3:34) You have 3 grown children whom you used to pray for while looking up at Orion‘s belt.  Take us back to that time and share a little about those prayers, your hopes for your little people and what your family’s life with Jesus was like at that time. (6:19) Eventually, you discovered your youngest son was heavily addicted to drugs.  Share a little of that discovery with us. (11:59) In A Prayer for Orion, you frequently reflect on the guilt parents feel as they raise their kids: “Parenting was supposed to be if this, then that. We would raise them right and they would be all right” How did you work through the guilt and shame you experienced being both a parent of an addict and a Christian?  (15:53) What would you say to parents who struggle with guilt or feel as if they somehow failed their kids? (19:31) Your home became a welcoming place for your son’s friends who were also addicts.  You and your husband welcomed and loved, “The Lost Boys.” What did you learn from opening your home to those who were walking through addiction? (25:05) While reading A Prayer for Orion, I could feel the heaviness of evil and the hope of God. Describe the tension between evil and magnificence you refer to in the book. (25:58) Let’s close with the moment when “what if” became “even if.” Even if Sweetboy didn’t survive a heroin overdose, everything would still be okay.  Share that experience with us. Quotes to Remember: “He was always a great kid at home. There wasn’t any sense of rebellion or anger.” “The unique thing about drugs is it’s unpredictable. That’s one of the particularly difficult things about it… you don’t know if it’s going to come back or not….There’s just this, I have to trust You [God]. What I’m trusting in, isn’t the way that things are going to turn out. What I’m trusting in is that You are who You say You are, that You have not lied to me.” SHOW NOTES continued Related Episodes: 28: Jodie Berndt | Praying The Scriptures For Your Children 57: Kristen Hatton | Redemptive Parenting 71: Krista Boan | Tips For Parents In The Digital Age Follow Katherine James on Twitter and at katherinejameshome.com ----------------------------------------------- Follow Grace Enough Podcast on IG and FB ------------------------------------------------
