Who needs rest from creating? In the beginning, God didn't just rest from work but He rested from creating. After burn out, Lisa-Jo and Christie wrap their arms around us and give us grace to pause. Whether you're entering a season of creation or needing a break from creating we can all relate. Sometimes a season calls for a stop. for a pause. for less. You might not need anything new but need to revisit and savor what you already have. "Maybe I don't need something new. Maybe what I need is already here and I need to slow down and savor it." - Christie Purifoy Do we lose momentum in our life if we rest? Feeling obliged to keep going but you want to stop? Which alternative to saying "I Did Nothing" (thanks to Chalkboard Mag) resonates with you? God is telling Christie and Lisa-Jo to pause. This is a story about painting a dining room nearly charcoal black. And the hundreds of hours it took. This is a story about how it turned a dining room into an everyday extravagance. This week Lisa-Jo and Christie remember the great farmhouse dining room painting saga of their first Thanksgiving in Pennsylvania and how it nearly ruined Christie and her husband's respective backs and arms and attitudes. But how it was more than paint. It was the kind of extravagance we get to give one another on the daily. Because this is lavish, insanely beautiful grace -- being willing to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, the boring into the extravagant, if only we have eyes to see, and sometimes paint buckets and brushes. Did Lisa-Jo recognize the transformation? Did her family appreciate the effort taken to create extravagance ahead of their visit? Did Jon and Christie survive the hundreds of hours it took to paint walls and CEILINGS a dark charcoal color? Tune in today to find out as they remember that single room that nearly broke them and all the back-breaking, heart-aching work that went into preparing the way. This is the story of our first critic. Once upon a time in a coffee shop in Chicago when Christie was a brand new English Literature professor a stranger asked her a question about reading and writing. He was pointed. He had opinions. He was her first critic. We've come a long way since then. And gathered many, many more reviews. And we've gotten better at receiving them. And learned a lot about leaving them. This is the story of what we have learned -- about reading as much as about writing. And how it's changed the way we think about reviews. This is a story for anyone who loves books as much as we do. Because to love books is to love authors and learn how to respond to their art with the reviews that we leave. And yes, we read aloud one of our favorite reviews -- not because of how it agrees with us. But because of how it kind of doesn't. And what a great lesson it taught us as readers and reviewers ourselves. This is the story of the labels people pin to us - to our bodies or our lives, or our families or our homes - and that we sometimes start to believe must be true. This is the story of starting to say that we will not be accepting those labels today, thank you very much. Today Christie and Lisa-Jo each share stories about labels they had unknowingly accepted about themselves since they were teenagers. As if they were a shameful secret. As if they should apologize for who they are. Do you know what we mean? Do you have a memory, a throwaway sentence, an insult, a note, a casual, cutting observation that you tucked into your soul and allowed to grow up alongside you as if it was always part of you? So that now that lie is grafted into your DNA and you can't tell the difference between the label and the reality of you? Today is the day to toss that label in the trash, friends! Join us as we speak truth and laughter and reality to the labels that have embarrassed us in the past. That we choose instead to name our lives and our homes and ourselves with the words spoken on the sixth day, “very good” (Genesis 1:31). This is the story of the secret shame we all carry about our houses. And the one thing that can free you from it. This is a story about Christie's house Maplehurst being adrift in a sea of mud and construction and the pungent smell of mushroom farms nearby. And what Lisa-Jo's daughter said to change how Christie sees/smells her house. There is nothing like the power of seeing your home and your life through someone else's eyes. For better or for worse. This week Christie admits her own secret house shame. Lisa-Jo admits all her judgy thoughts about Marie Kondo and they are both surprised by what they learn from this diminutive Japanese woman who is taking us all by storm in her new Netflix show. Do you have a secret shame about your home? Then this episode is especially for you! Listener invitation: We LOVE hearing from listeners. This is the story of a Jasmine-scented South African summer night. This is a story about disappointment in God, and this is a conversation about the dreams that do NOT come true. Christie and Lisa-Jo recorded this episode the week of Christie's twenty-second wedding anniversary. They marveled over the long years of their friendship, and all the dreams-come-true they have witnessed in each other's lives. But what about those dreams that don't come true? Can we trust a God who sometimes says NO? Is that God still good? Lisa-Jo tells the story of her most bitter disappointment and the surprising encounter she had one warm, South African night. Lisa-Jo and Christie give us an invitation to declutter our souls. Whether you're finishing something or in the middle or very beginning, you need the grace and perspective of this episode! When we finish a hard thing, even when we finish it well, it doesn't always feel how we want it to feel. Sometimes when we make it across a minefield, we might not feel delighted but just exhausted. Finishing is a process too. There's not always fireworks at the end. What does it mean to remember and not be paralyzed while looking back? Do you have an image like Christie to help you? Who else is so tired? How can we find rest? Not everything in the past three years has been lost. We have to find out where it's hiding. Sometimes God invites us outside our rhythm and when we get intentional, we see God showing up. So much has happened for all of us in the past three years. Some of that is the disconnection of the body and our souls have been scattered. Christie shares about needing to be gathered up and made whole after years of breaking. You too? What does it mean to live and not just survive? We're eternal creatures with souls. Christie says that our soul is the life of the body. Lisa-Jo asks, "How can we rest without checking out?" Step outside of your normal rhythms. What does rest look like when we turn to the Lord? What extra burdens are we putting on ourselves. If you feel like you're dying, we have some helpful thoughts for you. We can practice a soul rest in the midst. God breathed life into us in the beginning. Let the Holy Spirit breathe into us now. What does my soul even need? In the past three years, all of us have been through so much and we've held on to each other. Let's all look around and ask, Is my soul connected to my body? Lisa-Jo and Christie talk about everything from carpool to tea time and everything in between as they help us grow a daily life that matters. At the end of the day, we don't make things grow. So much of ordinary life is receiving growth from God. External measures are not necessary for growth. It really is the internal restructuring of our souls that brings the deepest growth. Gardners can choose to tend a garden or let it grow weeds, as goes our internal growth. The soul will continue on and is designed for eternity. How are you tending to your soul? Mortality isn't a punishment but an opportunity. Who am I becoming? Am I cooperating with heaven or the enemy of heaven? We're choosing sides all the time. THAT is a daily life that matters. What gift can Lisa-Jo give to her neighborhood? What about you? You can borrow Lisa-Jo's dad's advice and his three nonnegotiables in life. Do you agree with him? Let's get back to the basics. What gift can Lisa-Jo give to her neighborhood? What about you? Christie has her new book, A Home in Bloom: Four Enchanted Seasons With Flowers, that we can purchase today! It's an enchanted book for anyone! You don't have to be a gardener to be blessed by this magical way of feeling seen, no matter the weeds in your life or yard. There's no shame here! Christie lets us know, "Perhaps it isn't even possible to practice resurrection on our own, perhaps it is a way of living that works best when we're living from within relationships and in community." By God's design, presence heals us in community rather than when we're on our own. God created these bodies for nature! Christie and Lisa-Jo are taking you behind the scenes today of the pod. Do we make money on the pod? Have you ever wanted to start a podcast? We share a little of what's involved. Also, if your yard or your heart feels a little sad, growth comes slow, don't give up hope! Remember how far you've come. Spring will burst forth...it's coming! Trees can anchor us. Did you know what the Bible says about trees? There will still be casualties in life. Trees do die and things don't work out but we can keep going. For things to grow, some things have to die. There are always more seeds. E.B. White's husband described a memory of her so well, "she was calming plotting the resurrection." It's never too late to plant the seeds and new things in our lives. How much do you love coffee or wine? Lisa-Jo and Christie are having are riding the sluggard, struggle bus during Lent sometimes and they have helpful nuggets of truth to share with us. In our self-care culture, it's easy to let our sinful nature take us right back to ourselves rather than the cross. There's a difference in self-care that's life giving for those around us and there's the self-care that gets crooked. We want more excuses to serve ourselves but then Lent is holding Lisa-Jo and Christie accountable in this season. When you're feeling the "sandy gears of life" be curious and lean into Jesus. Sometimes clinging to something we want doesn't leave space for what can end up being so much better. Lisa-Jo's brother Joshua battled cancer for 2 years. Do you have a question for God? Object lesson today is we don't need to white knuckle life. Have you gotten something wrong this week? Wherever you are in your life, we can all relate to the days when we can't move forward as planned. You think it's going to get nice and it doesn't. Can you believe what happened in Lisa-Jo's kitchen? Baking with love versus science makes for a funny contrast. A moment is supposed to be great and then it's not. Instead of holding on tight, maybe we need to let go. Lent is a season where we recognize our own morality. Embrace that we don't just make mistakes each time but we sin. Jesus came while we were still sinners and He didn't wait for us to know we needed Him. We can trust the Rescuer and receive His freedom. Christie has a rare, special guest. They talk about how nothing ever stays the same. Building something good takes time and thoughtfulness, which involves their home at Maplehurst. Did you know this new word that Christie learned from Lisa-Jo today? You're safe in this conversational space. Wait until you're cozy and alone to listen today as we go deep and possibly dark for a bit. When we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we don't walk alone and God walked through the valley first. Today we acknowledge the reality of death. Scripture doesn't hide from it and neither should we. What does a good death look like? Christ's banner is victory over death. Like Lazarus, He calls us out! You guys, please don't forget the Resurrection is here and with us! God turns on the lights! Let us know in the reviews if you've been to Light of the World Garden. What did Christie say to shock Lisa-Jo? No one knew this fact about her husband. "How do you recognize "enough" when you have it?" In the second half of life Lisa-Jo and Christie ponder how we let go of the season of hunger to settle for what's right in front of us. This season is more settled with a deeper and targeted work without a hungry need to consume everything. It's good to get to a point you feel full and not push past it. There's an overflow in life. Being more settled is a relief and a strength. This episode will really give you peace, if you're in the second part of life and give you something to look forward to, if you're not quite there yet. How did a podcast comment show Lisa-Jo and Christie's blindspot? Creativity gets more deep and less wide with age. No matter your season, this episode is here to encourage you. Don't let the anxiety of finding the "one right road" stress you out. The end goal isn't to be the best version of you but you're part of something bigger, it's part of joining God in His Kingdom work. When you look at "becoming" as fruitfulness, you can't miss it. Nothing is meaningless or permanent. Lisa-Jo and Christie share a purposeful perspective for our ordinary lives. Why did Lisa-Jo say she feels like a grandmother? As we get older, does the settlement in our age mean we're less creative? If we feel tired does that mean we're past the most creative season in our lives? Lisa-Jo and Christie dig into the facts that we're made in the image of our Creator. Our limits may adjust and our spectrum of change may be different but there's more freedom in creativity as we get older. Join the conversation and get permission to not have to master all the new things and remember to let creativity be sparked in community! Can you believe what Christie is doing at Maplehurst? Sometimes embodied faithfulness can feel like drudgery. Today we talk about how staying awake and staying in motion with our faith is a messy journey. We don't romanticize life here. Staying awake to what God is doing is sometimes like falling forward. If you want to sleep-walk or numb the pain, we have some glimmers of hope for you. Being in the process is not bad. Cleaning dishes every day is annoying but in order to stay awake we can't have tunnel vision for just today! Lisa-Jo's daughter, Zoe, has a fantastic take on their family's visit back to South Africa. How do our lives change if we can step out of our regular perspective? Today you can learn from other main characters across the world. There's relief for not being the main character ourselves. We don't have to travel to grow in this area, spiritually or otherwise. Ever had a big change from travel, revelation or on a regular Tuesday with God? It has to become part of us and we can't go back to sleep. Let's help each other stay awake to our own lives! How was Lisa-Jo's trip to South Africa? Learn about her homeland and you'll come away with hopeful nuggets for your heart. We all have ways to hold the beauty of coming alongside others in their life-changing work. When God invites us to steward his creation it costs us something. It applies to us in the middle of the ordinary, boring lives while being smack dab in the middle of our redemptive lives. It all matters. This is the story of what Christie found at the back of a very messy closet. This is a story about the shadow side of every "Yes." In our lives, and in this new year, are we the gardeners sowing seed, or are we the soil in which our Maker plants seed? If we ARE the soil, how do we prepare ourselves to receive and nurture the RIGHT seeds? These are the questions Lisa-Jo and Christie explore as they trade stories in the second half of a two-part New Year's conversation. This is the story of a neglected garden and a disappearing act. This is the first half of a two-part conversation on why we're beginning this new year by saying "No!" loud and clear. Ordinary life is a gift offered to each one of us, but did you know that ordinary life isn't actually inevitable? That ordinary life--with all of its wonder and beauty--is actually soil to be tended? One of the most important ways we're tending the ground of our lives this year is by saying "No." We invite you to listen, and we invite you to join us this year in growing smaller in order to gain so much. _______ Sponsor appreciation: We're so grateful to partner with show sponsors that keep making our work possible. This is the story of having a champion. Especially one who doesn't look, talk, act, or sound like a champion. This is the story of surprise characters who become plot twists in our teenage memories. This is how people are very often very different than what we expect them to be. And how two unlikely guardian angels imprinted on the teenage stories of Lisa-Jo and Christie in ways that are just as vivid today as when they were seventeen. And how that affects their parenting today. We hope today you'll pause for a minute and look around your ordinary life for the extraordinary angels hiding in your plot twists. Does the approach of Christmas feel a little less joyful than you wish it would? Are you already tired? Already feeling inadequate to the demands of the season? Then this episode is for you. We can't tell you exactly what you should or shouldn't do this season. We have no three-step plan for success to offer. But we have our stories. We have our own questions. And we have our faith in the God who is with us no matter how empty or sad or afraid we might feel. We invite you to listen. We invite you to respond. This is the story about strawberry jam and Wednesday night parenting. Because this is the story about how our podcast got it's name. Buried deep in the thick of the most ordinary things we could think of was the surprising discovery that everything we valued most might easily be described as ordinary, if not even boring on some days. It was an unexpected person who pointed out to us the obvious name for our show that we'd totally missed. Which in turn inspired us to start looking at these small, seemingly ordinary traditions as landmarks in a family. Because we believe that ordinary life is inherently more than enough to make a difference at the cellular level of our lives. In a culture that worships bigger, faster, more, here is the story of how we aim to push back and dig deep into the spiritual truths that the Kingdom of God has always been best reflected in a grain of wheat, a mustard seed, a widow's mite, a small jar of oil, five loaves and two fishes. We want to offer our listeners permission to find value in their everyday lives again. This is the story of eating a 3 course dinner soaking wet in the middle of a rainstorm in Zimbabwe. And the story of yellow leaves falling in the middle of summer in Pennsylvania. And how we have often both been so desperate in our dissatisfaction it took us years to find the antidote. But in this episode we share what that looks like, how to apply it in your own life, and the very best place to take all your longing and dissatisfied dreams. In this episode we share some of the biggest demands we've made of God and how He's answered. It wasn't what we expected.
