Today's legal evidence, more than ever, is digital. We're not digging through boxes of paperwork and memos anymore. In its own way, paper evidence was easy – if time consuming – to request, sift through, organize, present, and protect. But today, evidence lives in the digital universe. We find evidence in emails, tablets, mobile devices, computers, the cloud, cell phones, even digital doorbells and devices connected through the Internet of Things (IoT).  Guest John Sammons is an author and professor teaching digital forensics at Marshall University and is the associate director of the Marshall Institute for Cyber Security. He explains how vital paralegal professionals have become in the struggle to gather, understand, decipher, explain, and protect today's digital evidence.  More than ever, well-educated and up-to-date paralegal professionals become indispensable as they help their legal teams understand what to ask for, where digital evidence might be hiding, and how to clearly explain these complex clues to a judge and jury.  Sammons explains how advancing technologies, AI, digital duplicates, and speech replication tech are making tech-savvy paralegal professionals irreplaceable components inside their organizations. Ann delves into the importance of principles such as doing work you enjoy, prioritizing physical and mental health, and maintaining a professional demeanor. She emphasizes that traits, skills, and habits are essential, but principles form the guiding beliefs that shape one's career. By consciously building these principles, paralegals can navigate their careers with determination and resilience. Ann also speaks to the significance of having a growth mindset—one that is flexible and open to continuous learning—as well as creating a professional environment that demands respect and accountability. The implications of a negative professional association are discussed, stressing the importance of selecting colleagues wisely and building a workplace culture that supports success. Key Takeaways: Do Work You Enjoy: Find a role, practice area, and firm size that align with your passion to avoid burnout and excel in your career. Prioritize Health: Establish mental and physical health routines as foundational beliefs to ensure long-term career success. Maintain Professionalism: Present yourself professionally in attire, conversation, and behavior to convey confidence and respect. Cultivate a Growth Mindset: Continually seek learning opportunities to enhance your paralegal skills and surpass career limitations. Chelsie discusses her transition from insurance defense to creating a comprehensive training program for paralegals, ‘Law School for Paralegals'. In her training, Chelsie dives into the common issues owners face when it comes to training staff. Most firm owners do not have the time to train paralegals, especially if paralegals don't know their specialities. It is easier for most to hire experts, like Chelsie to come in and take charge of the ‘training' reins. What makes Chelsie's program so great is that training can be state specific. This allows for the training of many different paralegals across the country.Running a side business can be a difficult task, especially if you have a busy life. Chelsie provides some tips for those who are thinking about running a side business. Being passionate about your business is so important and you need to be all in to make it work for you.
