How do you prepare for prison? How do you tell your young daughters that you aren’t going to see them for a very long time? Kerry Tucker was jailed in 2004 for one of the biggest white-collar crimes committed by a female in Victoria at the time. She’d been stealing money from her employers. She owned up to it, went through the process and spent 4.5 years behind bars in a maximum security prison away from her two daughters. Surprisingly for Kerry, jail was the making of her and she’s written a book all about it... Click here to subscribe to No Filter. "Being in prison made me a better person." - Kerry Tucker Not the words you'd expect from someone who left two very young daughters on the outside and spent 5 years in maximum security prison, right? Well, Kerry Tucker, once known as prisoner 171435, is far from what you'd expect in many ways. She's someone who for 5 years, imprisoned with some of Australia's most notorious female inmates. Despite the environment, the stigma, and the suffering that comes with being a mother who was forced to face her fate in prison and abandon her young girls in the process, Kerry took the cards she was dealt and made sure she made amends with her destiny.  From the day of her release, with a Master of Arts degree in hand, Kerry walked into a job with Swinburne University (I know, right?!) and has since attained a PhD, contributed to the script writing for Wentworth season 1 and dedicates herself to being an advocate for educating women in prison.  A true beacon of hope for those who think they cannot turn their life around.    SPONSORED BY TESTART FAMILY LAWYERS Website: testartfamilylawyers.com.au KERRY TUCKER Buy The Book: penguin.com.au TIFFANEE COOK Linktree: linktr.ee/rollwiththepunches Website: rollwiththepunches.com.au LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/tiffaneecook/ Facebook: facebook.com/rollwiththepunchespodcast/ Instagram: instagram.com/rollwiththepunches_podcast/ Instagram: instagram.com/tiffaneeandcoSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kery Tucker seemed to be a typical suburban mother of two, but she had a terrible secret: she had been stealing money from her employers. When her offence was discovered it was reported to be the biggest white-collar crime committed by a female in Victoria, and she was sentenced to seven years in a maximum-security prison, alongside the state's most notorious criminals.  Being incarcerated with drug dealers and murderers, however, was not nearly as daunting as having to tell her two young daughters why she was leaving them.  The shame was almost unbearable.Continue reading

Catherine is here today with Kerry Tucker. After spending nearly five years in Victoria's maximum-security prison for women, Kerry was released with her Master of Arts and was successful in completing her Doctorate in 2014 which is an extensive research and multi-publication of the study of women in prison as a community, from the perspective of a participant and observer. Whilst incarcerated she was the lead Peer Educator which involved liaising, negotiating and advocating for and on behalf of every woman prisoner for the term of her sentence. She was sole representative for the community of women in appearing with them in Governor Courts, Magistrate and County Court Pleas, Parole Board submissions and DHS negotiations.  She was granted her own office in prison where she represented over 4,000 in hearings. For the last six months of her sentence, Kerry worked by day at a law firm and returning to the prison at night.  Kerry continues in this role since being released and advocates for post-release women in the community. Kerry was the inspiration behind ‘Wentworth' and in January 2012 Kerry was appointed Story and Prison Authenticity Consultant to FremantleMedia to consult on the newly announced re-make on Foxtel of the hugely successful cult-television series 'Prisoner - Wentworth' that premiered in May 2013. Foxtel recently purchased her ABC Australian Story episode and aired it throughout 47 countries in Asia as part of the ‘Best of Australian Stories 2010'.
