Managing people is still the hardest problem in business. We've built rockets, nuclear reactors, and AI systems… but getting humans to coordinate? Still unsolved. In this episode, Casey Handmer talks about what leadership actually looks like when real stakes are involved when families depend on payroll, when bad decisions compound, and when “being liked” can quietly kill performance. He shares what he's learned building Terraform Industries, why most management books aren't that useful, and why firsthand accounts from people like General Groves hit differently. This conversation gets into hard feedback, demanding standards, and first principles thinking and why leaders need the social permission to push people without becoming jerks. They were hardened criminals… in for stabbing, shooting, killing, raping… You are not in here because you made a bad choice, you are not in here because you got caught, you are not in here because you chose the dangerous path… You are not in here because you chose the hard way You are in here because you chose the easy way!      The ultimate choice!  LUke 9: 23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me. NASB       Chew on this: Your health right now is because you chose hard or you chose easy… your feelings. Your finances - you chose your feelings or you chose the cross. Your marriage to your spouse - you chose your feelings or you chose the cross.  Your spiritual depth - feelings or cross. EVERYTHING IN YOUR LIFE… INCLUDING YOUR ATTITUDE IS FEELINGS OR CROSS.   *TO be the BOSS you gotta choose the CROSS!      CROSS - what does it mean?    Context: In 1st-century Roman culture, this phrase meant carrying the instrument of one's own execution, signifying absolute surrender and a, willingness to die to one's own desires. The Cost: It means putting aside personal ambition, comfort, and, if necessary, one's own life to follow Jesus. The Reward: Jesus contrasts this by saying, "For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it”.   Daily Application: It is not just about extreme sacrifice, but daily choosing obedience, patience over anger, and selflessness over comfort.        In the first-century Jewish context under Roman occupation, the cross symbolized the most degrading, torturous death imaginable—not a mere "burden" like a difficult circumstance (a common modern misinterpretation). Jesus' audience would have immediately understood "take up your cross" as a vivid metaphor for being willing to face execution, shame, and total loss of life for His sake. It was shocking and countercultural: no one "took up a cross" expecting to survive or gain worldly power.   Cross = shame, guilt, suffering, rejection,

When Life Unravels: Biblical Strategies for Life's Hardest Seasons (w/ Dr. Erin Barry) - Ep. 177

Christian Parent, Crazy World

When Life Throws a Curveball: How to Stay Faithful When the Bottom Drops Out Few challenges stretch a parent’s faith and emotional reserves more than life’s unexpected curveball seasons—the plot twists that leave you wondering, “God, what are you doing?” How do you remain anchored in truth when the bottom drops out? This week on Christian Parent/Crazy World, Catherine welcomes back her very first guest and trusted friend, Dr. Erin Barry, to help parents not only survive, but find hope and stability in life’s most turbulent moments. Dr. Barry is a clinical Christian counselor, author, homeschool expert, and co-founder of inseparableLives.com. Her biblically grounded wisdom comes from over 30 years of walking families through the storms of life. In this transparent and practical episode, Catherine gets real about her own season of loss, uncertainty, and a series of shocking life upheavals—from parenting a prodigal, to family moves, to sudden job loss. Using these stories as a backdrop, Dr. Barry unpacks essential biblical strategies for clinging to faith and finding stability when life feels out of control. Key Insights & Takeaways Find Your Safe Circle Not everyone is equipped to carry the weight of your story. Dr. Barry urges listeners to seek out wise, mature friends or a counselor who can “sit in the ashes” with you—without minimizing, judging, or rushing your healing process. “For seven days Job’s friends sat in silence—sometimes, that’s all we need.” Grieve Without Comparison Your pain is valid, even if others have it worse. This episode addresses the tendency to minimize your own suffering and offers permission to mourn at your own pace. “Healing is not a competition—it’s a process.” Honor Different Grieving Styles Don’t expect everyone in your family to process pain the same way. Grace and patience protect relationships from being torn apart during crisis. Anchor in Truth, Not Fear When fear and catastrophic thinking take over, Dr. Barry encourages listeners to pause and return to “what is true today.” Worrying about every “what if” tomorrow is not God’s design. “God promises what we need for today—not for every ‘what if’ tomorrow brings.” Worship as a Weapon True perspective and peace are found in worship, not just on Sundays, but in everyday moments. Worship redirects your focus to God’s character and faithfulness. Embrace God’s Bigger Story Even when God doesn’t “remove the rocks”—the hardships—He can “raise the water” and carry you over them, bringing profound good out of suffering. Notable Moments Catherine shares how her perspective on parenting was upended by a prodigal child season and life transitions. Dr. Barry recounts her son’s diabetes diagnosis and how walking through pain has deepened her empathy and faith. Inspiring testimony of hope: The legacy of Ashley Averell and how God brings good from heartbreak, equipping and sending young people on mission. “The greatest human tragedy—the Cross—became the foundation of our hope. God is still good, even when the rocks don’t move.” About the Guest Erin A. Barry is an author, speaker, counselor, and educational consultant. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education, an NCCA Masters of Arts, and Doctor of Clinical Christian Counseling. Erin’s passion is to see people walking in wholeness, body, soul, and spirit as God designed. She is the author of Yes, You Can Homeschool! The Terrified Parent’s Companion To Homeschool Success and, alongside her husband Brett, is co-founder of inseparableLives.com, a ministry devoted to nurturing Christ-centered hearts dedicated to oneness with God, spouse, and community. Nobody doubts the sincerity of such apologies, but given the number of them over the years, perhaps their rhetoric should be matched with the practicalities and supports survivors need.· With the Residential Tenancies Bill comes into effect from March 1st, Sinn Féin finance spokesman Pearse Doherty was accused of “scaremongering and misinformation” by Tánaiste Simon Harris in the Dáil on Thursday. Doherty pointed to research carried out by I-Res Reit, the State's largest corporate landlord, which suggested a potential increase in rent returns of up to 25 per cent resulting from the new rent rules. The new rules are designed to attract new investors into the rental property sector, and what could be more attractive than charging higher rents?· The glacial speed at which vital infrastructure projects such as the Greater Dublin Drainage Project are delivered here could be accelerated by the establishment of a new Infrastructure Regulatory Simplification Unit in Minister for Public Expenditure and Infrastructure Jack Chambers's department.· And the upcoming byelections in Dublin Central and Galway West, with seats vacated by Paschal Donohoe and Catherine Connolly respectively, are looking increasingly hard to call.Would you like to receive daily insights into world events delivered to your inbox? Kenji Kuramoto is the Founder and former CEO of Acuity, a pioneering outsourced accounting and fractional CFO firm that built and maintained financial functions for thousands of innovative entrepreneurs. Under his leadership, Acuity became one of Accounting Today's Top Firms for Technology and a Top Firm to Work For, before merging into Sorren in 2025. In this episode, Kenji joins Jason M. Blumer, CPA, to unpack what really happens when you step away from something that's still working. He shares the full story behind Acuity's 20-year journey, the decision to run a proactive merger process, and why he ultimately chose not to continue into the next chapter with Sorren—despite being Acuity's founder and leading the proactive merger process. The conversation explores the emotional reality of leadership transitions: identity loss, grief, relief, clarity, and the discipline required to not hold on too long. Kenji reflects on the surprisingly anticlimactic nature of closing day, the importance of timing your exit well, and how staying deeply connected to the profession helped him navigate life after stepping away. Today, Kenji is an investor, founder, and advisor focused on reimagining the future of the accounting profession. He is the founder of 404 Invests, an early-stage investment firm backing Accounting Technology, SaaS, FinTech, and Crypto companies. Earlier in his career, Kenji served as CFO of an Inc. 5000 tech company and began in the assurance practice at Arthur Andersen. If you're a firm owner considering succession, a merger, retirement, or your own next chapter as a leader, this episode offers rare honesty and perspective you won't often hear.

Voice used to be AI's forgotten modality — awkward, slow, and fragile. Now it's everywhere. In this reference episode on all things Voice AI, Matt Turck sits down with Neil Zeghidour, a top AI researcher and CEO of Gradium AI (ex-DeepMind/Google, Meta, Kyutai), to cover voice agents, speech-to-speech models, full-duplex conversation, on-device voice, and voice cloning. We unpack what actually changed under the hood — why voice is finally starting to feel natural, and why it may become the default interface for a new generation of AI assistants and devices.Neil breaks down today's dominant “cascaded” voice stack — speech recognition into a text model, then text-to-speech back out — and why it's popular: it's modular and easy to customize. But he argues it has two key downsides: chaining models adds latency, and forcing everything through text strips out paralinguistic signals like tone, stress, and emotion. The next wave, he suggests, is combining cascade-like flexibility with the more natural feel of speech-to-speech and full-duplex conversation. We go deep on full-duplex interaction (ending awkward turn-taking), the hardest unsolved problems (noisy real-world environments and multi-speaker chaos), and the realities of deploying voice at scale — including why models must be compact and when on-device voice is the right approach. Finally, we tackle voice cloning: where it's genuinely useful, what it means for deepfakes and privacy, and why watermarking isn't a silver bullet. If you care about voice agents, real-time AI, and the next generation of human-computer interaction, this is the episode to bookmark.Neil ZeghidourLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/neil-zeghidour-a838aaa7/X/Twitter - https://x.com/neilzeghGradiumWebsite - https://gradium.aiX/Twitter - https://x.com/GradiumAIMatt Turck (Managing Director)Blog - https://mattturck.comLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/turck/X/Twitter - https://twitter.com/mattturckFirstMarkWebsite - https://firstmark.comX/Twitter - https://twitter.com/FirstMarkCap(00:00) Intro(01:21) Voice AI's big moment — and why we're still early(03:34) Why voice lagged behind text/image/video(06:06) The convergence era: transformers for every modality(07:40) Beyond Her: always-on assistants, wake words, voice-first devices(11:01) Voice vs text: where voice fits (even for coding)(12:56) Neil's origin story: from finance to machine learning(18:35) Neural codecs (SoundStream): compression as the unlock(22:30) Kyutai: open research, small elite teams, moving fast(31:32) Why big labs haven't “won” voice AI4(34:01) On-device voice: where it works, why compact models matter(46:37) The last mile: real-world robustness, pronunciation, uptime(41:35) Benchmarking voice: why metrics fail, how they actually test(47:03) Cascades vs speech-to-speech: trade-offs + what's next(54:05) Hardest frontier: noisy rooms, factories, multi-speaker chaos(1:00:50) New languages + dialects: what transfers, what doesn't(1:02:54 Hardware & compute: why voice isn't a 10,000-GPU game(1:07:27) What data do you need to train voice models?(1:09:02) Deepfakes + privacy: why watermarking isn't a solution(1:12:30) Voice + vision: multimodality, screen awareness, video+audio(1:14:43) Voice cloning vs voice design: where the market goes(1:16:32) Paris/Europe AI: talent density, underdog energy, what's next

In high school, a career and technical education program let her earn healthcare certifications that sparked real clinical interest. As an undergrad at Texas A&M, she sought academic rigor and built-in research while learning to ask for help sooner—through office hours, professional advising, and a premed society that brought advisors and medical schools to campus. She shares the toughest moments too: a rocky transition to college, being humbled by General Chemistry (but loving visual organic chemistry), and navigating a competitive premed culture by staying in her own lane.
