Last week, I shared part one of my conversation with my teammate Aly Solly from Inventium. We unpacked some of the lessons from 2024 - our toughest year yet. After the cracks and burnout of 2024, this episode is all about how we rebuilt trust, reset our culture, and found our way back to being a team again. Aly and I talk about the offsite that changed everything, the small rituals that reconnected us, and how we learned to speak openly - even when it felt uncomfortable. We also discuss: The “Deal or No Deal” moment that clarified who was really in for the rebuild. Simple but powerful rituals - like our Team Health Monitor and Monday meeting questions - that strengthened connection. The pivotal offsite that helped the team confront the past and name the elephants in the room. How the team rebuilt trust through shared ownership and reflection instead of blame. Signs that things had genuinely changed. Why rebuilding trust starts with leaders taking emotional risks. KEY QUOTES “Trust isn’t rebuilt by policies or posters. It’s rebuilt by people taking small emotional risks again and again.” “Your vulnerability allowed us to be vulnerable. It reminded us that we were all on the same boat again.” Every Monday, we start our team meeting with one random question to break the ice and reconnect as humans. Here are a few of the questions we’ve loved: If you could have any superpower for a day, what would it be? If you could swap jobs with anyone for one week (realistic or not), who would you pick? If you were arrested for a crime, what would your friends assume you’d done? If you suddenly woke up as a billionaire, what would be the first completely unnecessary thing you’d buy? If you could instantly learn any new skill, what would it be? What’s a habit or routine you’ve recently picked up that’s working for you? What’s a hobby or activity you’ve always wanted to try but never got around to? If you missed part one, I recommend listening to that first so you understand how bad things got before we began to rebuild. Listen here. Connect with Aly Solly on LinkedIn.   Resilient Couples: How to Stay Strong Through Life's Hardest Challenges Summary: In this inspiring episode of the Human Intimacy Podcast, Dr. Kevin Skinner and MaryAnn Michaelis, LCSW, explore what it means to build resiliency as individuals and as couples—especially in the face of life's most difficult challenges. Drawing from personal experiences, research, and decades of clinical work, they discuss the essential components of resilience: adaptability, emotional regulation, flexibility, and hope. The conversation delves into why emotional self-awareness is the foundation of resilient relationships, how couples can “fight well,” and what it means to create safety before deeper connection can occur. They reference experts such as Dr. Al Siebert, Dr. Dan Siegel, Dr. Stephen Porges, and Dr. Martin Seligman, offering insights into the neurobiology of resilience and the relational skills that sustain connection through adversity. Listeners will walk away with practical strategies to strengthen their emotional core, improve communication, and cultivate hope—even in seasons of deep pain or uncertainty. Key Takeaways: Resiliency begins with emotional regulation and self-awareness. Adaptability and flexibility are learned skills that sustain connection. Safety is the foundation for relational repair after trauma. Emotional intelligence helps us stay curious and connected rather than reactive. Hope is a neurological process—and a critical part of healing together. How do we advocate for equity amidst federal policy changes that actively widen gender and racial gaps?Since April, a record-low unemployment rate for Black Americans has skyrocketed, surging from below 5% to 7.5%. At the same time, the unemployment rate for white Americans dropped slightly to below 4%. The economic position for Black women in particular was just beginning to get better, and today, slashed public sector jobs and a slew of other factors are causing a rapid backslide. When people of color, and especially Black women, lose ground, it's a flashing neon warning sign of systemic cracks that, ultimately, impact us all. In this episode, I'm breaking down the of data that highlights just how heavily our current economic problems are impacting American workers, families, and communities. The numbers don't lie. Here's what they show:The federal and public sector job cuts are disproportionately impacting Black women;Attacks on DEI programs are stifling improvements that had barely begun;Good leadership today looks like advocating for equity and opportunity for all.Related Links:Joint Center for Economic and Policy Research, “The Best Black Economy in Generations – And Why It Isn't Enough” - https://jointcenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/The-Best-Black-Economy-in-Generations-Final.pdfEconomic Policy Institute, “What's behind rising unemployment for Black workers?” - https://www.epi.org/blog/whats-behind-rising-unemployment-for-black-workers/The New York Times, “The Racial Wage Gap is Shrinking” - https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/19/briefing/juneteenth-racial-wage-gap.htmlThe New York Times, “In Trump's Federal Work Force Cuts, Black Women Are Among the Hardest Hit” - https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/31/us/politics/trump-federal-work-force-black-women.htmlMSNBC, “300,000 Black women have left the labor force in 3 months. We often talk about success stories, not the moments when things completely fall apart. But sometimes, that’s where the biggest lessons hide. In part one of my two-part conversation with my teammate Aly Solly, we talk about Inventium’s hardest year yet – the one that tested trust, stretched leadership, and forced us to rebuild from the inside out. After I released my Leadership Lessons episode from 2024, I had so many people reach out asking what really happened. How bad did it get? And how did we fix things? So, I sat down with Aly – who lived through that tough period – to unpack what it actually feels like when a high-performing team starts to unravel. Together, we talk about the cracks that appeared when trust faded, what it’s like to lead through burnout, and how even the best intentions can backfire. Aly and I discuss: The inside story of Inventium’s most challenging year – when hierarchy and structure divided the team instead of strengthening it. How burnout crept in and why high performers stopped working together. The unexpected damage caused by trying to “do the right thing.” How Aly’s trust in the team – and in me – began to fracture. The small moments that started to rebuild trust between us. What it’s like to face retrenchments as both a leader and teammate. The moment everything finally broke – and the phone call that changed how we work together. KEY QUOTES “It’s funny how the most instinctive thing to do is often the least constructive thing to do.” “I was so burnt out, but that moment we rebuilt trust reminded me what mattered about the work we do.” Connect with Aly Solly on LinkedIn. This episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, takes a hard look at one of the most dangerous myths in first responder culture — the belief that "strong" officers don't crack. Behind the calm faces and tactical precision, many responders carry crushing loads of trauma (Amazon Affiliate), responsibility, and unspoken expectations. And ironically, those who seem the most resilient on the surface are often the ones suffering the deepest in silence. We unpack why this myth persists, how it impacts mental health and relationships, and what it takes to rewrite the script before it breaks you.

“People do change - sometimes by choice, sometimes by necessity, but always through connection.” - Winnie da SilvaCan people really change? Or are we just fine-tuning the version of ourselves that already exists? After 20 years of coaching and consulting leaders, I still find myself coming back to this question because it's one that sits at the heart of every transformation story I've ever witnessed. In this final episode of my 20-year celebration series, I'm pulling back the curtain on what I've learned about how change really happens and why we rarely do it alone. You'll hear me discuss:The real question behind “Can people change?” and why it often starts with asking if I can change. What it actually means to change how you show up, not who you are.The story of “Marty,” a quiet executive who learned to project confidence without becoming someone he's not.The four kinds of change - intentional transformation, deliberate reinvention, situational upheaval, and identity disruption - and how they show up in real life. Why relationships are the scaffolding of change - the people who stretch us, challenge us, and hold up the mirror we sometimes need. Two powerful stories of leaders who transformed - one by choice, one through challenge - and what their journeys reveal about reclaiming your own story. How true change starts as an internal shift but becomes real only through connection.ResourcesWinnie da Silva on LinkedIn | On the Web | Substack | YouTube | Email - winnie@winnifred.org

427 | Are We Running the Hardest, Easiest Business There Is? Podcast Description Nearly three decades into owning martial arts schools, Duane and Allie keep coming back to the same paradox: Are we running the hardest business or the easiest business? In this raw and honest episode, they dive deep into both sides of this question. From the emotional weight of student quits and tragic incidents to the incredible fulfillment of watching shy kids become confident leaders, they explore why running a martial arts school can feel like both extremes—sometimes in the same day. Whether you're a brand-new school owner drowning in overwhelm or a seasoned veteran looking for validation that you're not alone, this episode will resonate. Duane and Allie share their hardest moments (including a heartbreaking story about an instructor who committed murder), their easiest wins (like the former student who became a pediatrician and credited martial arts for his success), and the real shifts that happen when you stop waiting for it to get easier and start building the right systems, team, and culture. This isn't about complaining or bragging—it's about being honest. Because the truth is, the same things that make this business incredibly hard are often the exact same things that make it incredibly rewarding. Key Takeaways 1. The Paradox is Real: It's Both the Hardest AND the Easiest Business After nearly 30 years, Duane keeps coming back to this question: Are we running the hardest business or the easiest business? The honest answer? Both. The same emotional investment that exhausts you is also what fulfills you. When you pour your heart into students and they quit, it's depressing. When you pour your heart into families who genuinely care and they tell you how much you've impacted them, it's what motivates you to keep going. The reality: Running a martial arts school is unique because the things that make it incredibly hard are often the exact same things that make it incredibly rewarding. 2. The Hardest Moments Can Be Devastating Both Duane and Allie have experienced some truly difficult moments: Duane: An instructor left the studio one night, kidnapped his girlfriend, and by morning had killed his girlfriend, her friend, and then took his own life. Duane thought he would lose everything. He had to bring in a social worker to help students process the trauma. Allie: A 45-year-old student passed away on the floor during a sword class from a "widow maker" heart attack. There was nothing anyone could have done—it was a hidden defect. Allie: Had to kick out 12 students who formed a toxic "coup" in his school, constantly talking negatively and creating drama. When he finally removed them, the entire lobby erupted in applause—he had no idea how toxic they were to the good families. Other hard moments include: Quitting your day job and facing financial stress Kicking out a student (or parent) for the first time Dealing with problem parents who don't align with your values Asking yourself daily: "Why am I still doing this?" 3. The Easiest Moments Make It All Worth It On the flip side, there are moments that remind you why you got into this business: The perfect class where everyone is engaged, high energy, and everything just clicks Student breakthroughs like the shy kid who finally speaks up or the struggling student who nails the technique Parent testimonials that bring tears to your eyes Former students who come back years later to say thank you Allie's story: A former student who quit at blue belt around age 12-13 walked back into the school as a pediatrician and said, "You changed my life. I used a lot of what you taught me to become a doctor, and I still use it every day." Allie's other story: An autistic student named Caleb who used to run out of class, lay on his back, scream, and put his feet on the wall. After three years,

This week's episode focuses on Christopher “Chris” Schuler—his journey as a son, father, and most notably, a devoted caregiver. Chris, adopted from Colombia and raised in a loving, close-knit family in New York, reflects deeply on identity, belonging, and the power of chosen family. His parents' move to Rhode Island marked a period of even stronger family bonds, which would later prove invaluable when his father was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The diagnosis and subsequent caregiving experience were transformative for Chris: he describes the initial shock, the emotional toll of shifting immediately into crisis mode, and the unwavering determination to care for his father, drawing strength from childhood lessons of love, attachment, and resilience.Throughout his father's illness, Chris balanced being a parent himself, maintaining his job, and providing near-round-the-clock care. He candidly shares the physical and mental challenges of caregiving, including the toll on his own health and the burnout that caregivers often experience. Yet, amidst the difficulty, he found meaning by staying present, bringing humor to dark moments, and cherishing precious time with loved ones. The experience has forever changed Chris—today, he proudly claims his identity as “Dad,” guided by his father's legacy of love and laughter, and is committed to using his voice to support and advocate for other caregivers navigating similar journeys.About Chris:Chris is a staunch brain cancer awareness advocate. He was the primary caregiver to his late Dad, Donald Schuler, who was diagnosed with GBM in July 2021. He works closely with biotech's and patient advocacy organizations across the globe, amplifying their critical work and building key relationships to further improve outcomes for patients. He spent eighteen years as a successful philanthropic facilitator, having raised millions for a variety of causes. He's currently a Venture Partner with Varia Ventures, working to raise awareness for emerging venture funds dedicated to uncovering and funding innovative discoveries to improve brain health. Chris continues as his Dad's caregiver — caregiver to his life, legacy and memory.    Thank you to sponsor: CareScoutSupport the showConfessions of a Reluctant Caregiver Sisterhood of Care, LLC Website: www.confessionsofareluctantcaregiver.com Like us on Facebook! The Painful Truth: How the Hardest Choices Build the Best Practices

Ever notice how those last two painful reps at the gym are what actually build muscle? Dental practice ownership works exactly the same way. Growth happens precisely when you're tired, stressed, and want to quit—but push through anyway.Dr. Paul Edgerson shares a deeply personal journey from being a 99-pound freshman football player who could barely bench the bar to building successful dental practices. The transformation didn't come from working harder, but from working smarter and pushing through discomfort. When he hired a trainer who taught him that growth only happens during those painful final reps, everything changed. This same principle applies perfectly to practice ownership.Through vulnerable storytelling, Dr. Edgerson reveals how he faced the uncomfortable task of confronting an associate dentist about questionable clinical work, despite good production numbers and positive patient relationships. This courage to have difficult conversations, drop insurances with outdated reimbursement rates, delegate leadership responsibilities, and say no to energy-draining commitments represents the "last two reps" of practice ownership. These uncomfortable actions yield the greatest returns and differentiate growing practices from stagnant ones. The podcast introduces a powerful framework for identifying what you're avoiding in your practice because of discomfort. Dr. Edgerson challenges listeners to "eat the frog"—tackle your most uncomfortable task first thing each day—and consider getting a "spotter" in the form of coaching or mentorship to accelerate growth. After all, you can't build strength without stress, and you can't build a better practice without embracing necessary discomfort. What uncomfortable conversations are you avoiding that might be keeping you from true practice freedom?GRAB THE FREE PLAYBOOK HERE - Discover 30 proven strategies top-performing dentists use to increase profits, cut clinical days, and finally enjoy the freedom they originally built their practices for.https://www.dentalpracticeheroes.com/playbook Take Control of Your Practice and Your Life We help dentists take more time off while making more money through systematization, team empowerment, and creating leadership teams. From SEAL to Studio: The Art of Grit with Justin Hughes In this week's episode of the Team Never Quit Podcast, Marcus, Melanie, and Hunter sit down with Justin Hughes — former Navy SEAL turned professional oil painter — whose journey from the battlefield to the art studio embodies the essence of transformation, discipline, and creative courage. Based out of Charleston, South Carolina, Justin has redefined what it means to serve and to create. As a self-taught representational artist, he channels the lessons, emotions, and intensity of his time in the SEAL Teams into his paintings, merging the warrior spirit with the sensitivity of the fine arts. His mission is to bridge two seemingly distant worlds — the world of combat and the world of creativity — revealing that both demand vision, perseverance, and heart. Listeners will hear how Justin's childhood in Southeast Asia, and a fateful encounter with Lone Survivor sparked a dream that would change his life forever. His story takes us through the rigors of SEAL training, moments of doubt and triumph, and the eventual transition from military service to artistry — a path shaped by struggle, purpose, and redemption. Through his brushstrokes, Justin explores what it means to be a modern warrior — one who fights not only on the battlefield but also in the soul. Drawing comparisons to the renaissance genius Leonardo da Vinci, Hughes uses his art to express the beauty within discipline and the strength found in vulnerability.  In this episode you will hear: • My dad was a Huey pilot. (8:44) • I grew up all over Southeast Asia (9:20) • I was thinking: Whatever is gonna be the hardest thing to do in the military; wherever that realm is, those are the people that want to be in those jobs the most. That's gotta be where my people are at. (14:41) •  One of the biggest misconceptions of BUDs is you can't just show up and not quit. You still have to be a good team guy. You still have to do the work. You gotta be a performer. You gotta be a pro. We're looking for the whole man. (21:05) • For those of you who don't know what pool competency is. It's the hardest single test in BUDs. (37:55) • When I first started painting, I didn't know any artists. I didn't know anything about art. (62:48) • [Melanie] Q: What's your goal with art? A: Just to be better every day. And continue to provide paintings that are meaningful to people. To glorify the Lord through whatever work I'm doing. (74:30) • I'm still saying “Hooyah! like turrets. (75:25) • It takes a lot of bad work. You've gotta be patient with the process. Sometimes a really good thing will look really bad for a long time for a long time before you can polish it up and make it into something beautiful. So… don't quit.
