#225 - How to Join Team USA, $60 Million Broken Jaw, Top 5 Hardest Marathons

Happy National Green Juice Day! We start by admitting we'd rather buy the bottle than deal with the "pulp mess" of making it ourselves. We recap a chaotic snowy weekend where Erin and Dan drove two hours for Sam's birthday party, Erin got "overcooked" on wine while ruining a video game, and Dan achieved neighborhood legend status by plowing everyone's driveways. We also share a hilarious struggle with a telepresence robot intended to help Grandma connect with the kids which resulted in the robot repeatedly ramming into walls. In sports, we discuss whether $60 million is worth Jake Paul's broken jaw and pivot our NFL allegiance to the "Seahawk Birds" after the Eagles' elimination (and potential rigging). We analyze the terrifying video of a US bobsledder left to complete a run solo, discover how "remotely athletic" people can join the 2028 Olympic Handball team, and learn where the hundreds of "Toothless" dragon stuffies thrown onto the ice for figure skaters actually go.We then run through the top five hardest marathons in the world (Antarctica? No thanks), while Erin updates us on her "night owl" training schedule for the Craig Conover challenge. We dive into legal drama, covering the lawsuit claiming the McRib has no actual ribs and the inspiring victory of a local shop owner who defeated a trademark claim over the phrase "Silly Goose on the Loose." Finally, we explain the 1986 origin of the little arrow on your gas gauge and end with a heartwarming "No Bad No Sad" story about a Pennsylvania principal who built a culture of trust through high fives and secret handshakes.

“Send Coach John a message”Love finding things that help keep my soul on fire… these posts that I find are really things that fire me up! From Mindful Maven (@mindfulmaven_)  Its a reminder for all of us to “Trust the process. Always remember that… You can have the worst days of your life and a few weeks later you can have the best day of your life. Keep pushing through.”  This is something that hits me hard when I reflect on it - and truthfully I do have a bit more time to reflect now a days. It get me thinking about how proud of my little 8 year old self would be of my 59 year old self.  That 8 year old is part of me and has been since I was that age. I do have plenty to be proud of that I have pushed through and not given up. It helps me to also connect with Seek Wiser (@SeekWiser_) that shared this: “Hardest thing right now is, finding people with pure intentions”  Part of our process needs to keep focusing in doing the right thing. Not only for our lives and the people we love, but our communities / country / the world!  My little 8 year old self has been in the front row seeing all the good and bad I've done. I need to do more of what is right in living my life. Great stuff for all of us to connect with.  Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.  ** I would appreciate anyone to try clicking on the top of the show notes where it says "Send us a text" to leave a few thoughts / comments / questions.  It's a new feature that I'd like to see how it works. **

In this episode, Steph shares insights from a recent coaching intensive where she observed a powerful question being posed: "What do you want?" Despite its simplicity, many high-performing coaches struggled to articulate their desires, revealing a common challenge in the coaching community. Steph discusses the reasons behind this difficulty, including the tendency to prioritize others' needs over one's own, societal beliefs about deservingness, and the impact of people-pleasing tendencies. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing and articulating personal desires as a pathway to fulfillment and creativity. She introduces a practical exercise called the "100 Things List," challenging listeners to push past initial comfort zones and societal constructs in order to unlock insights about their true desires. Hardest and Best Parts of Christianity is an honest, real conversation about what following Jesus actually looks like. Whether you're a new Christian, Jesus-curious, skeptical, or struggling with your faith, this video breaks down both the beauty and the cost of Christianity—without sugarcoating it.In this video, we explore the best parts of being a Christian, like purpose, forgiveness, hope, community, and a real relationship with God. But we also talk about the hardest parts of Christianity—self-denial, doubt, suffering, unanswered prayers, obedience, and what it really means to follow Jesus in a broken world. If you've ever wondered, “Is Christianity worth it?” or “Why is following Jesus so hard?” this video is for you. This conversation is especially for Gen Z, non-Christians, and believers who feel burned out, deconstructed, or unsure where they stand with God. Christianity isn't just about rules or religion—it's about truth, transformation, and wrestling honestly with faith. If you're thinking about becoming a Christian, rebuilding your faith, or simply curious about Jesus, this video will help you understand what Christianity truly offers—and what it asks of you.Got any questions or topics you'd like to hear about? Have you seen the "Where were you in 2016?" trend on Instagram? I've been seeing it everywhere, and when I look back at that year, it's literally the year that changed everything for me.    In this episode, I open up about what 2016 looked like for me, which was the year I launched Hazel & Lace Photography and the same year my life was completely derailed by a serious car accident, chronic pain, burnout, and a ton of medical debt. When everything else felt uncertain, photography became the one thing that gave me purpose.   This conversation is for anyone building a business while life is throwing curveballs, whether it's working a demanding job, navigating health or financial stress, or feeling like you're behind everyone else. It's an honest reminder that success is rarely linear and that building something meaningful often happens alongside hardship, not after it.   If you're questioning your timeline or wondering if it's worth continuing, this episode will remind you why you started in the first place.   Apply now for the Dream Destination Workshop The 2026 lineup for the Dream Destination Workshop: Alaska: July 12-17, 2026 Iceland: August 2-7, 2026 Switzerland: August 10-15, 2026   Connect with Megan:

What if the problem with treating the R sound isn't the child—but the way we train it? In today's episode, we step outside the field of speech-language pathology and borrow powerful, evidence-based principles from exercise science and kinesiology to rethink how we treat speech sound disorders. Why? Because exercise science has done what our field largely hasn't: isolated what actually works using controlled trials, precision, and specificity. Speech is a complex neuromuscular skill. Treating it like flashcards and passive listening don't make sense—and they don't produce durable change. In this episode, you'll learn how five core principles from exercise science directly apply to improving the R sound efficiently: • Why “practice makes permanent” and how the 80% challenge point prevents habituating errors • How progressive overload explains why complex clusters outperform isolated sounds • Why auditory bombardment is passive and inefficient when therapy time is limited • How compound training (paragraphs, clusters, movement, literacy) creates system-wide linguistic change • Why specificity matters—and why speech therapy must look like real speech to generalize This episode challenges the status quo in therapy and makes the case for treating speech as the neuromuscular endurance task it actually is. If you're tired of plateaus, endless cueing, and R programs that don't generalize, this conversation will change how you think about treatment starting Monday morning.

Bridging AI and Biology to Tackle Medicine's Hardest Problems with Dr. Marinka Zitnik

For Dr. Marinka Zitnik, the promise of AI in medicine begins with acknowledging the scale of the problem. Most patients with rare diseases have no approved treatments, and traditional drug development timelines make progress painfully slow. In this conversation, she describes how AI-driven drug repurposing offers a way to work within existing constraints while still opening new therapeutic possibilities. She also highlights a structural issue that has limited impact: machine learning and biology communities often work in parallel, not together. By building shared benchmarks and collaborative spaces, Marinka argues, researchers can focus models on problems that truly matter for patients. The episode introduces her definition of AI agents as systems that can take actions and learn from outcomes — a capability she sees as essential for scientific discovery beyond static prediction. Throughout the discussion, Marinka returns to the value of academic freedom: the ability to chase difficult questions that require long time horizons and interdisciplinary thinking. Transcript.

In this episode, Michael Shermer talks with filmmaker James Fox, whose work has helped push UFOs, now often called UAPs, out of the tabloid shadows and into congressional hearings, radar logs, and sworn testimony. Fox has spent three decades interviewing fighter pilots, radar operators, intelligence officials, scientists, and firsthand witnesses. His conclusion is not that we know what these objects are, but that dismissing them no longer works. Around 90 to 95 percent of sightings collapse under scrutiny. The remaining cases do not. The question is: What are we supposed to do with what's left? James Fox is a film director widely regarded as one of the leading voices in UFO filmmaking. He is known for documentaries such as The Phenomenon, The Program, and Moment of Contact, several of which are frequently cited among the best UFO documentaries ever made.

What do you do when life's challenges begin before you can even remember them?In this episode of The BraveHearted Woman Podcast, I am with Melony Brown — author, speaker, podcast host, and survivor — to talk about overcoming adversity through faith, mindset, and unwavering trust in God.Melony shares her extraordinary story of suffering a stroke at age two, living for decades with unexplained neurological symptoms, and finally receiving a diagnosis of Moyamoya disease at age 45. After years of debilitating migraines, multiple mini-strokes, and invisible struggles, Melony underwent brain surgery and discovered that a portion of her brain had lacked oxygen her entire life — yet God sustained her every step of the way.We explore the power of mindset, the importance of having a “fight verse,” and why fixing your eyes on God changes everything when fear and uncertainty threaten to overwhelm you. Melony explains how Scripture must become a reflex — not a reference — and how praise, worship, and spiritual discipline help women stand firm in the middle of trials. This episode is filled with encouragement for Christian women facing health challenges, emotional exhaustion, or seasons where giving up feels tempting. You'll walk away reminded that while God doesn't promise a life without trouble, He does promise His presence, strength, and faithfulness through it all.If you're ready to stop shrinking back, strengthen your faith, and learn how to keep moving forward — this conversation is for you.Timestamps:0:00 - Guest Intro1:52 - The BraveHeart Story of Melony Brown on childhood stroke and Moya-moya disease9:35 - How Melony's faith grown through challenges12:18 - Why mindset is important when facing a challenge15:08 - What is a fight verse?18:28 - How to deal with fear21:37 - What makes Melony's books an “interactive survival guide”?25:03 - Melony's #1 tip for midlife womenQuotations:“Mindset is everything — how you respond matters more than the challenge itself.” - Melony Brown“God doesn't promise to take the challenge away, but He promises to give us what we need.” - Melony Brown“Fix your eyes on God. The Hardest Transition in Leadership w/ Bill Koch

The Aerospace Executive Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 8, 2026 54:43

The transition from being a rockstar in your vertical to leading at the C-suite level is one of the hardest jumps in modern business.  Not because you aren't capable, but because the job changes faster than anyone prepares you for, and the timeline to become effective has collapsed from years to months. You used to have a multi-year runway to listen, learn, and settle in. Now the proving ground has accelerated, and you're expected to think enterprise-wide, set direction, shape culture, and operate with conviction almost immediately. And that's where so many leaders get blindsided. They step into the role with deep expertise, strong track records, and every intention of succeeding. But they quickly discover that the behaviors that powered their rise don't automatically translate to the top job.  The stakes are higher, the scrutiny is sharper, and the margin for a slow learning curve is gone. Boards, investors, and teams are already forming judgments before you've even taken your seat. And without realizing it, new executives find themselves operating on outdated instincts in a completely different environment. Bill Koch is a former CEO who now coaches leaders navigating some of the most high-pressure environments. He helps new CEOs compress the transition, build real executive presence, and operate with clarity and confidence. In this episode, we talk about how to accelerate that transition, how to understand how you're actually being perceived, and how to adapt fast enough to avoid losing ground in your first critical months.   You'll also learn: Why the jump from functional mastery to C-suite leadership is so challenging How the timeline for becoming effective has collapsed, and what that means for new executives. The behaviors that helped you rise and why they can quietly derail you in a senior role. How to understand the difference between vertical thinking and enterprise thinking. Why a 360 assessment is often the first real mirror a new executive has ever seen. How boards and teams perceive you long before you think they do Why private equity environments expose leadership weaknesses faster than any other setting. How to cultivate executive presence that signals quiet confidence, not overcompensation. The importance of building a “personal boardroom” to think clearly under pressure.   About the Guest Bill Koch is an executive coach with more than 25 years of C-suite and senior leadership experience across public companies, private enterprises, and private equity–backed firms. A former CEO himself, Bill brings a rare blend of operational depth, boardroom insight, and executive maturity to his coaching practice. His work centers on one mission: helping high performers become highly effective enterprise leaders. For more than a decade, Bill has served as a trusted advisor to CEOs and senior executives navigating high-pressure, high-visibility roles. He coaches leaders across Fortune 500 companies, growth-stage organizations, and academic institutions—guiding them through pivotal transitions, accelerated timelines, and complex leadership challenges. His clients turn to him to gain clarity, sharpen judgment, and build the confident executive presence required to lead at the top. Bill's clients include American Express, Apple, Boeing, Goldman Sachs, John Deere, Mars, MGM, McKesson, Toyota, and others. In this one, we briefly recap our Saints last game of the year. Hardest thing about it was we know Shough wanted to get at least one against the falcons this year, especially in a game that we really did some good things, and bested the other team in a lot of key statistical categories. BUT...this last game simply closed one chapter so an even greater one can begin! Now that the dust has settled on 2025, we know that we will go into the offseason armed with the EIGTH pick in the draft and have a much easier strength of schedule to look forward to than all but one other team in the league. Optimism abounds, so we briefly get into some of that (besides sumbullshit in atlanta...). BUT, our big "Season Recap" episode isn't dropping just yet, so consider this one a precursor to what should be an epic "season finale" episode. Until then, this one will hold you over just fine. This podcast has been such a special part of our lives, and we're just getting started. To celebrate six years, we're recreating one of our very first episodes by revisiting the questions we answered back then and sharing how we would respond today. Over the past six years, we've grown in our marriages, in motherhood, and as individuals, and this episode is an honest reflection of that evolution. We begin by revisiting the question: What is your biggest struggle in marriage? Abby shares that six years ago her answer was score-keeping, but today her biggest challenge is around apologizing. Amy reflects on how her biggest struggle used to be the constant time crunch while juggling a nursing job, multiple businesses, and motherhood to three young kids. While that season has eased, her current challenge is navigating moments when both she and Drew are low on patience.Next, we revisit guilt in motherhood. Amy shares that her guilt once came from always feeling mentally pulled in different directions, while Abby reflects on how bedtime routines were once her hardest moment. Today, Abby's guilt shows up during their busy nighttime family routines, as packed schedules often leave her wishing for more quality time with her kids.We then dive into the realities of being a working mom. Both of us share how difficult it is to find boundaries between work and family, especially when so much of our work overlaps with our personal lives. The struggle to protect time, avoid burnout, and not feel like we could always be working is still very real.We also open up about finances, reflecting on the debt we carried six years ago and the progress we've made since then. From there, we discuss body image and insecurities. Amy shares how she reached a place of true body confidence and developed a healthy relationship with food, while Abby reflects on navigating body dysmorphia during the early years of the podcast. Finally, we revisit the question of our proudest moments. Amy shares how her definition has shifted toward raising kind, thoughtful kids, while Abby laughs at her former answer and reflects on how much her perspective has changed. If we're lucky enough, we'll sit down and record this episode again when we're 46. Thank you for being part of this journey with us—for growing, reflecting, and evolving alongside HERself. This episode is raw in a way I don't usually get. No expert interview. No structured lesson. Just me sharing the hardest year of my life and the moment I realized I was standing at a fork in the road. Losing myself completely or choosing to rebuild into the woman and mother I want to be. I talk honestly about postpartum hormones, losing routines, grieving parts of my old life, and the quiet identity shift that no one really prepares you for when motherhood collides with ambition, business, and real life.I take you behind the scenes of what this year actually looked like and the realizations that finally stopped the spiral. We talk about the pressure to do it all, why feeling lost doesn't mean you failed, and how I'm redefining priorities without abandoning myself in the process. I also share the non-negotiables I'm committing to as I move into this next season and why rebuilding doesn't have to be extreme to be meaningful.By the end of this episode, I hope you feel less alone in the messy middle and a little more grounded if this year shook your sense of identity. If this year left you feeling lost, stretched thin, or quietly questioning who you are now, this episode is for you.0:19 – What It Feels Like to Lose (and Rebuild) Your Identity After Baby12:09 – How Setting Non-Negotiables Helped Me Reclaim Control14:51 – Why Therapy, Routine, and Flexible Nutrition Became Essential Tools22:22 – How Rebuilding Gently, Not Perfectly, Is My Goal for the Year AheadOther Episodes You'll Love:Episode 132: The #1 Thing No Mom Warned Me About Weaning
