In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami recaps the Netflix docuseries, “Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing.” This documentary shows viewers the dark side of child influencers and what can go wrong when minors are pushed to produce content and income. Piper Rockelle's YouTube channel, featuring her “squad,” was wildly successful and earning hundreds of thousands of dollars each month. Over time, members of the squad and their parents came to see Piper's mother, Tiffany Smith, as problematic, exploitative and a master manipulator. Video footage in the documentary shows Tiffany exhibiting disturbing behavior toward the children, and even forcing herself onto one of the minor squad members. In 2022, 11 former squad members filed a lawsuit against Tiffany Smith and her much younger boyfriend, Hunter Hill. The plaintiffs alleged that Tiffany and Hunter sabotaged their YouTube channels, and claimed Tiffany abused them. Jami gets into all the details of this cringey and disturbing documentary, providing all of her personal hot takes along the way. Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news the week started with a strong risk-on mood and equities rose on Monday in Asia, and especially in Europe. Wall Street opened with the same vibe, but lost momentum in the middle sessions, although it is returning in the later session. It's volatile. But first in main street US, the New York Fed's consumer expectations survey mirrored the other recent sentiment surveys, noting a defensive turn in the mood. Consumers' year-ahead expectations about their households' financial situations deteriorated in March, with the share of households expecting a worse financial situation one year from now rising to 30%, the highest level since October 2023. Those surveyed said they see higher inflation in a year, up to 3.6% from 3.0% in the February survey. The expectations for earnings growth fell, and for joblessness to rise. Of course, this one was taken before the heavy tariff policies hit in early April. The April update will be available on May 9 (NZT).In Washington, the Trump administration is moving swiftly to end enforcement of white collar crime, dismissing federal prosecutors involved in enforcing foreign bribery cases, crypto crime, and money laundering crime. Its open season for white collar criminals. Washington is also apparently open for far-right Russians. It is so risky to visit the US, EU diplomats are now being issued with burner phones for their visits, just like they do when visiting China or Russia. On the tariff front, exemptions are coming for car parts, new tariffs for pharmaceuticals. The common thread is bolstering profits for campaign supporters. Need a favour? Go to Washington with money for Trump. In Canada, their central bank is about to review its monetary policy settings. It was on a rate cutting track, but is now more likely to leave its policy rate unchanged given the inflationary threats from the trade war.In China, their exports surged by +12.4% in March to US$314 bln, far above market forecasts of +4.4% rose and accelerating sharply from a +2.3% rise in the January–February period. It marked the fastest increase in overseas sales since last October, driven by the urgent frontloading before the American tariffs took effect. Since November when talk of tariffs first became a credible risk, the rise of Chinese exports has been exceptional. Meanwhile, March imports fell -4.3%. As a consequence, China's merchandise trade surplus has hit record levels in 2025.We exported +13% more to them in Q1-2025 from a year ago, and imported -5% less. Australia exported -29% less, and imported -5% less, for comparison. The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.37%, down -13 bps from this time yesterday. The price of gold will start today at just on US$3213/oz, and down -US$23 from yesterday.Oil prices have dipped -50 USc from yesterday to be now at US$61/bbl in the US and the international Brent price is now just under US$64.50/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is now at 58.8 USc, up +½c from yesterday at this time and the highest since mid-December. The fall of the USD extends. Against the Aussie we are up another +20 bps at 93 AUc. Against the euro we up +60 bps from yesterday at just on 51.9 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today now just on 67.3 and up +40 bps from yesterday. The bitcoin price starts today at US$84,546 and holding, and down a mere -0.3% from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been modest at +/- 1.6%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. And we will do this again tomorrow.

Only a few weeks into his second term, Donald Trump and his billionaire buddies are doing their best to dismantle the federal government's regulatory agencies. So today, we're revisiting a compelling conversation we had in 2020 with journalist and podcast host Michael Hobbes about a piece he wrote in HuffPost titled "The Golden Age of White-Collar Crime." Initially reported against the backdrop of Trump's first presidency and its alarming erosion of regulatory oversight, Hobbes breaks down the staggering prevalence of elite deviance—where the wealthy evade accountability for crimes that cause immense social harm—and also offers insight into why white-collar crime often goes unchecked. It's a timely reminder of the consequences of allowing the ultra-wealthy to operate above the law. This episode originally aired on March 10, 2020. Michael Hobbes is a journalist, podcaster, and former senior reporter for HuffPost, known for his in-depth investigations into social issues, economics, and media narratives. He is the co-host of If Books Could Kill and Maintenance Phase, and previously co-hosted You're Wrong About, where he debunked cultural myths and misconceptions. Hobbes has also contributed to outlets like The New Republic, Pacific Standard and Slate covering topics ranging from housing policy to moral panics. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is D Werkmeister, author of the book Volk. Born and raised in Nebraska, Darin Werkmeister now lives outside of Philadelphia PA, where he was an FBI street agent for 21 years. During that time, he investigated White Collar Crime, Organized Crime, Money Laundering, and Domestic Terrorism. While in Philadelphia, he was an eight-year member of the FBI SWAT team. Prior to the FBI he was a Marine Corps officer. VOLK is his first novel. In my book review, I stated Volk is an FBI thriller with a shapeshifter. I can honestly say that I wasn't sure what I would think about this novel and told Darin that I might not be his audience - werewolves are just not my thing. However, his characters are so strong and engaging, and the storyline so realistic (despite the werewolves), that I couldn't put it down. Terri Watson is the main FBI agent. She is working the case of her career when she sees the beast. But who can she tell? Imagine seeing a werewolf and trying to explain that to your boss. Instead, Terri takes matters into her own hands, and the result is ... let's just say a great twist to the normal FBI thriller story! I enjoyed that we see things from Terri's point of view as well as the wolf's. And Darin made it easy by making all of the wolf's thoughts in first person, present tense. It was rather spooky to be in the head of a werewolf, but this change in POV and tense really added to the story. If you love a good thriller/suspense, even if you don't normally go for shapeshifters, I think you'll love this book. I know I did! In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Netflix docuseries: “The Menendez Brothers.” This 2024 documentary highlights the widely publicized case involving Lyle and Erik Menendez, two brothers who killed their wealthy parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989. This brutal case had a grip on the entire nation because it had all the makings of a Hollywood movie …a rich family from Beverly Hills that seemed perfect from the outside looking in. What most people didn't know at the time was that inside of their Beverly Hills mansion was a house of horrors, according to graphic and disturbing testimony at the Menendez brothers' first trial. In this episode, Jami recalls her memories and perception of this case from her youth and how her opinions have shifted over the years. She also recaps the documentary and breaks down new developments in this 30+ year old murder case. Sponsors: Visit ForHers.com/MURDERISH for your personalized weight loss treatment options. Tracii Hutsona is so persuasive that she was able to convince a car dealership that she needed an expensive, fancy car for Arnold Schwarzenegger to drive. As a testament to her level of con artistry, she got the car! Tracii, however, maintains that this story isn't true, that stories about her criminal history are merely exaggerations to make her look bad. She's also highly offended at being labeled a con artist, even though the judge who sentenced her in 2023 called her a serial con artist. Tracii worked tirelessly to change the perspective and shift blame in order to keep her schemes going. In this episode, we take a look at some of Tracii's schemes from the last 30 plus years, and how she carried on a double life in order to constantly project an image of wealth and success, seemingly without regard for how her actions affected everyone around her. We'll find out if what Tracii says has any merit: has her past been sensationalized in order to make her look bad? Or, is she trying to downplay her criminal history in an effort to control the narrative in a classic con artist move? Listen to the newest season of Dirty Money Moves: Women in White Collar Crime. Follow the story of Tracii Hutsona, a woman wanted on charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for stealing more than $1 million from her cancer-stricken, single mother of three employer. Tracii's motive: she needed funding for her lavish lifestyle. Her own family, her friends, and her victims have all described Tracii as a pathological liar; a lifelong con artist who is exceptionally good at what she does. So what happened in the course of Tracii's life to lead her to this one very public moment, handcuffed on the Phoenix evening news for all to see? How does someone become a refined con artist …an exemplary liar? Is it an innate ability …or something that's learned throughout a lifetime? Or …maybe it's a little bit of both? Dirty Money Moves: Women in White Collar Crime is BACK! In Season 3, we're deep diving into the case involving Tracii Hutsona, a self-described “winner” who appeared to have it all: successful businesses, multimillion dollar mansions, luxury cars, and plenty of cash to spend on high end jewelry and vacations. She's an intriguing woman who's had a lengthy acting and modeling career, one that saw her on the cover of several major magazines, including Italian Vogue. She also had alleged romantic ties to Keanu Reeves. But the facts of Tracii's life that make her so intriguing, are also the facts we're checking and not much about Tracii seems to be real, except maybe her abilities as a con artist. Most recently, she made headlines for embezzling more than $1 million from Joumana Kidd, actress and ex wife of NBA star Jason Kidd, via Tracii's luxury concierge business. Tracii opened a restaurant in San Diego, fittingly called “Breakfast Bitch,” which was funded, in part, by Joumana's money. These recent crimes may have grabbed all the media attention, but they are by no means Tracii's first run-ins with the law. She's had a long history of schemes, going back 30 years. Yet, the most shocking thing about Tracii isn't the dollar amount she's managed to steal over the years, but the way in which she victimizes the people closest to her, over and over again. This is the story of an extremely charismatic woman who can manipulate even the most savvy person into believing exactly what she needs them to, all in the pursuit of a lifestyle of luxury, glamor, and self-indulgence. By the end of this season, you might be surprised as to how all of this chaos plays out. It's early February, 2021 in Phoenix Arizona. Federal agents have been on the hunt for Tracii Hutsona, a woman wanted on charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for stealing more than $1 million from her cancer-stricken, single mother of three employer. Tracii's motive: she needed funding for her lavish lifestyle. Agents find Tracci at her restaurant “Breakfast Bitch.” She tried to run but the chase was short-lived. News cameras captured the aftermath of the arrest with Tracii locked in handcuffs as she stood outside of her company car. Tracii's arrest shocked many of her friends and employees, who had no idea Tracii had spent much of the previous 30 years in and out of prison or on probation or parole for stealing and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to support a lavish lifestyle she'd been chasing her entire life. She'd racked up a slew of scams and schemes, leaving a trail of victims in her wake. Tracii has a magnetic personality and is easy to like, but hidden underneath her million dollar smile lies a remarkable ability to persuade those around her to believe anything she needs them to. Her own family, her friends, and her victims have all described Tracii as a pathological liar; a lifelong con artist who is exceptionally good at what she does. So what happened in the course of Tracii's life to lead her to this one very public moment, handcuffed on the Phoenix evening news for all to see? In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami recaps the Netflix reality docuseries, Unlocked: A Jail Experiment. Jami gives listeners a solid Cliffs Notes version of the 2024 docuseries, and shares her own opinions on the unusual experiment that allows detention center inmates to be outside of their jail cells 24/7 with no deputies inside of the pod to watch over them. The experiment begins with some chaos, as inmates push boundaries and break rules which threatens their ability to continue participating in the experiment. Over time, however, inmates within the pod begin forming a community, learning to problem solve without violence, and living by the rules set forth by authorities without their constant presence. Jami answers the question of whether or not she'd drink hooch and get cross-faded on coffee cigs if she ever found herself locked up. We got to speak with former FBI director James Comey last year just as his first novel — Central Park West — was released. It introduced readers to federal prosecutor Nora Carleton, who was working to convict organized crime figures in New York. The book was a terrific read; even though it was a fictional work, Comey packed it full of real world details that could only come from someone who had himself actually prosecuted mobsters. A year later, Comey — and Nora — are back. In his new book, Westport, Nora finds herself in some new situations. Not only is she now working in corporate law but she is also suspected of the murder of a colleague. In this conversation, we speak with James Comey about the new book, white collar crimes, corporate law, and the challenge of finding people who will tell you when you suck.Support The Murder Sheet by buying a t-shirt here: https://www.murdersheetshop.com/Send tips to murdersheet@gmail.com.The Murder Sheet is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami recaps the docuseries, Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife. The 2023 Netflix docuseries highlights the story of Dr. Paolo Macchiarini, who is a world-renowned thoracic surgeon known for his work in regenerative medicine. For years, people believed Dr. Macchiarini was a trailblazer in the medical field and someone who worked tirelessly to save lives by transplanting lab-made organs into patients. What people didn't know was that Dr. Macchiarini was extremely reckless in his approach and fully aware that his poor track record, coupled with faulty plastic organs, would very likely lead to death. Yet, the conman persisted. Jami gives listeners a solid Cliffs Notes version of the docuseries, and doesn't hold back on how she feels about the man who she believes is a low-budget version of George Clooney's ugly distant cousin, at best. It was a man claiming that his girlfriend, Denise Huskins, had been abducted from his home by perpetrators wearing wet suits. The man, Aaron Quinn, laid out an elaborate story for detectives who did not believe him. The media dubbed it the “Gone Girl” case due to the similarities it had to the movie. Law enforcement accused Aaron and Denise of perpetrating a “Kidnapping Hoax” which may have caused them not to properly investigate the alleged crime. As it turned out, the stranger-than-fiction story was true and a suspect was identified. Jami provides a full recap of the docuseries and doesn't hold back on her opinions of the authorities involved in this case. In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Lifetime docuseries The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard. In 2016, Gypsy Rose was convicted of second degree murder for plotting and helping to carry out the murder of her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, who allegedly abused Gypsy Rose and suffered from munchausen syndrome by proxy. Gypsy Rose was paroled in January of 2024 and has been documenting her post-prison life on social media since then. Some people believe Gypsy Rose is a master manipulator who shouldn't be celebrated, but others believe she committed murder in order to save herself from her abusive mother. Jami breaks down the 6-part docuseries and gives her own opinions along the way. Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Max docuseries Natalia Speaks, which is part two of the Natalia Grace story. In this recap, Jami accuses Michael Barnett of being in a full blown mid-life crisis as evidenced by his car and interesting sideburns. She also reveals her feelings about Natalia's new parents, Antwon and Cynthia Mans, and how they may not have Natalia's best interest in mind. This episode is chalk full of snarky commentary, hot takes and a Cliffs Notes version of Season 1 and Season 2 of the Natalia Grace story. If you hate Michael and Kristine Barnett as much as Jami does, welcome ….you've found your community. Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Netflix docuseries Escaping Twin Flames. Jami tries to suppress her rage but finds it difficult because one of the Twin Flames Universe leaders, Jeff, is a real piece of work. Twin Flames Universe is an organization that operates eerily similar to a cult in that members are pressured to disconnect from family, spend their hard earned money on classes that guarantee they'll be matched with their “twin flame,” among other cult-like characteristics. In reality, the Twin Flames Universe guarantee is a twin FLOP because nobody seems to get what they were promised by alleged relationship scammers, Jeff and Shaleia Ayan (not their real names, of course). The TFU leaders also allegedly pressure members into certain gender-affirming surgeries that they may not have chosen for themselves. Jami shares all of her hot takes on this disturbing, cult-like organization and doesn't hold back on her feelings about its leaders. Spoiler alert …she HATES them.
