Now that Kyle McCord is in the transfer portal, the biggest question surrounding Buckeye football is who will replace him as Ohio State's starting quarterback.Plan A might be bringing in a transfer quarterback – and we see Washington State's Cam Ward as Option A – but we also think Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz are both viable candidates to start next season if the Buckeyes don't land a top passer from the portal. We spend the first 30 minutes of this week's show talking all about why McCord's Ohio State career came to an early end and what the Buckeyes' future at quarterback could look like – both in the short term for the Cotton Bowl and in the long term for next season. We also talk about the other 11 Buckeyes who have entered the transfer portal already and why none of their departures should be seen as shocking – though there are several players in that group who we expect to make an impact elsewhere – and why an increase in transfer attrition isn't necessarily a bad thing for Ohio State.Later in the show, we take our first look at Ohio State's Cotton Bowl matchup with Missouri. Plus, we share our thoughts on the controversial decision to leave Florida State out of the College Football Playoff, why we're glad the four-team playoff era is coming to an end and make our predictions for how the final four-team CFP will play out. 0:44: We don't blame Kyle McCord for leaving, but Ohio State had to open up the QB competition 7:02: Conversation would be very different right now if OSU made a couple more plays vs. Michigan 8:39: Cam Ward is the best quarterback option for Ohio State in the transfer portal 15:22: Lincoln Kienholz could make a real run at the starting job (but don't count out Devin Brown) 18:29: This isn't Tate Martell to Justin Fields – Ohio State isn't getting a guaranteed upgrade 21:45: Ohio State's offense can benefit from having a QB who can do more with his legs 25:50: Run-up to Cotton Bowl creates opportunity for Brown and Kienholz to compete 29:38: Julian Fleming transferring for his final year of eligibility might be best for all parties 32:13: OSU could have to replace all offensive skill-position starters (if Emeka Egbuka doesn't stay) 36:56: Kye Stokes, Jyaire Brown among transfers we expect to make an impact elsewhere 42:38: Increased transfer movement reflects shifting approach for Ryan Day, Ohio State 49:03: What challenges Missouri will present to Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl 55:07: Why Ohio State will be motivated to win the Cotton Bowl even though it's not a CFP game 58:58: Florida State's exclusion from the CFP shows why playoff expansion is overdue 1:02:59: Eight teams might be better than 12 teams, but both are better than four 1:09:05: Our picks for the CFP semifinals and the national championship game
A total of 12 members of the 2023 Ohio State football program have entered the Transfer Portal since the end of the regular season, including four players from the defensive backfield. So how will the Buckeyes fill out their secondary for the Cotton Bowl and the 2024 season after the departures of Kye Stokes, Cam Martinez, Jyaire Brown, and Ryan Turner, especially with some NFL Draft departures possible at corner and safety? Tony Gerdeman of BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to break down what the latest news could mean for this month's Cotton Bowl, and more importantly, what the 2024 Ohio State secondary could look like. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5626222/advertisement
If you could pick only 22 Ohio State football players to go win a game for you against 22 other Ohio State football players, which Buckeyes would you choose? That's the question we were tasked with answering on this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays as we held our annual Eleven Warriors preseason team draft, going head-to-head to pick the best possible lineups for a hypothetical intrasquad game. The ground rules were as follows: Each of us had 22 total picks to draft 11 offensive players and 11 defensive players. Offensively, we were required to draft one quarterback, five offensive linemen and five skill-position players (wide receivers, running backs or tight ends). Defensively, we were required to draft at least three defensive linemen, two linebackers and four defensive backs with the other two picks being flexible, though we both opted to draft four defensive linemen and five defensive backs.Griffin won the pre-draft coin toss which allowed him to choose between the No. 1 overall pick or the second and third picks, and he chose to pick first. Following the No. 1 pick, we alternated selections two at a time in a snake-draft format until we both filled up our 22-man rosters. Our picks:1. Marvin Harrison Jr., WR (Griffin)2. The Buckeyes lose two starters from this past season, but they have replacements waiting in the wings. Where does Sonny Styles fit into OSU's plans? What about Syracuse transfer Ja'Had Carter? Lathan Ransom returns, but in what role? What does the return of Josh Proctor mean for the Buckeyes as well? And what happens if Kye Stokes suddenly emerges as a starter for this Ohio State defense? The fellas discuss all of this and more in previewing the Buckeyes at safety as they head into spring ball in one month.
On this Thursday Buckeye Talk, it's time to talk about the Ohio State secondary. Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means discuss what OSU cornerbacks coach Tim Walton and safeties coach Perry Eliano said last week. First, (0:30) the guys talk about the eight Buckeyes invited to this year's NFL Combine and what that says about Ohio State's 2022 team. Then (12:47) they talk about Walton, what was said about the OSU corners and the wide-open competition that could occur this spring. Then (33:53) it's the safeties, Eliano and how young safeties Sonny Styles and Kye Stokes could factor into the 2023 season. Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com. We now know which Ohio State players will be entering the 2023 NFL draft and which draft-eligible Buckeyes will be wearing scarlet and gray for another year.C.J. Stroud left us in suspense until Monday morning as to which camp he would be a part of, but he ultimately made the decision we expected all along when he opted to go pro. He now headlines a 2023 NFL draft class for Ohio State that includes three sure-fire first-round picks (Stroud, Paris Johnson Jr. and Jaxon Smith-Njigba), three more projected early-round choices (Zach Harrison, Dawand Jones and Luke Wypler) and several others who also have a good chance of hearing their names called. That said, there were also numerous key Buckeyes who announced over the past week that they will remain at Ohio State for another year including offensive lineman Matt Jones, linebacker Tommy Eichenberg and safety Lathan Ransom, joining a group of returning draft-eligible Buckeyes that also includes Miyan Williams, Cade Stover and Steele Chambers, among others. We start this week's episode by talking about why Stroud made the only business decision that really made sense by entering the draft and our initial expectations for the Kyle McCord vs. Devin Brown battle that will now ensue to replace him as Ohio State's starting quarterback. After that, we take a look at Ohio State's 2023 NFL draft class as a whole and discuss the impact of Jones, Eichenberg and Ransom's returns. Later in the show, we discuss our expectations for Brian Hartline in his new role as Ohio State's offensive coordinator, how we'll remember Kevin Warren's three years as Big Ten commissioner and the outlook for Ohio State men's basketball after a four-game losing skid. The full rundown for this week's episode: 0:36: C.J. Stroud made the right decision by entering the 2023 NFL draft 4:10: There's no shortage of potential landing spots for Stroud high on the draft board 9:56: 75% of 11W readers expect Kyle McCord to win the starting job, but we expect a close battle 14:12: What Griffin learned from talking to McCord and Devin Brown before the Peach Bowl 15:20: How much of a factor will running ability be in the quarterback competition? 18:36: Tristan Gebbia's addition is a depth move that provides insurance for a possible future transfer 20:42: A look at the draft stock for each of Ohio State's 14 declared NFL draft prospects 30:42: Kamryn Babb is stepping away from football, but he'll always have a moment to remember 33:14: No official word from Tyler Friday, Josh Proctor and Palaie Gaoteote, but it looks unlikely they'll return 35:45: How many Buckeyes will be drafted this year? Setting the over/under at nine 36:45: Luke Wypler's decision to leave makes Matt Jones the most important returning draft-eligible Buckeye 41:00: It's good news Tommy Eichenberg and Steele Chambers are returning, even though Ohio State needs to find a role for C.J. Hicks if he's ready 43:43: It's also good that Lathan Ransom is returning even though Sonny Styles and Kye Stokes are promising 46:05: Retention and recruiting two likely factors in Brian Hartline getting the OC nod over Justin Frye 49:44: No other staff changes appear imminent, though Larry Johnson and Parker Fleming are on expiring contracts 51:10: Should Ryan Day delegate playcalling duties to Hartline? There's arguments for both sides 52:20: Kevin Warren will be most remembered for the COVID year, but his impact on Big Ten will live on through USC and UCLA 55:36: Ohio State men's basketball has gone from a major Big Ten contender to an NCAA Tournament bubble team in just two weeks 59:28: It's not time to write this team off yet, but the Buckeyes need to start winning some close games 1:02:09: Ohio State isn't getting enough production from its transfers and its bench 1:04:26: Women's basketball now ranked second in the country, but two huge tests loom next week
In this episode of the Buckeye Weekly Podcast, Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr answer a handful of listener questions. First up, however, they discuss the commitment of 5-star 2024 wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. What kind of player is he and what does his commitment mean for the Buckeyes? The fellas then cover topics such as the difficulties of covering the team after a loss, why can't Ohio State have a dominating defense, what will the RB room look like next year, some early projections for Caden Curry, Sonny Styles, CJ Hicks, and Kye Stokes, and theorizing the reactions of Ohio State fans if CJ Stroud had opted out of the playoffs.
It's time for the Ohio State football team to test themselves during the first scrimmage of fall camp. Players like CJ Stroud and Ronnie Hickman are expected to do big things during practices like this. While Caden Curry and Kye Stokes can continue making names for themselves. Ohio State football was back in our lives for a split second last Saturday. Dan and Cass react to the big offensive and defensive performances at the Spring Game. Dan thinks the tight end group could be special and that the buckeyes could lean on the unit if needed. Cass discusses the physicality of this team and why he was impressed with Jack Sawyer. Finally we discuss why we were stoked to see Kye Stokes play!
The final week of spring football gave us our closest look yet at the 2022 Buckeyes.Ohio State took the field on Saturday for its annual spring game in Ohio Stadium, and while there wasn't necessarily any overarching storyline that came out of this year's scrimmage, there were no shortage of individual players who stood out.We begin this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays by talking about some of the biggest standouts from this year's spring game, including players who have received plenty of post-spring game publicity like Kye Stokes and Jordan Hancock but also some players who deserve more attention for their spring game performances like Andre Turrentine, Noah Potter and Xavier Johnson. We also consider how much playing time Evan Pryor could see at running back this year, what we make of Gee Scott Jr. and the tight ends' performance in the spring game, why the offensive line remains Ryan Day's biggest concern, what we took away from Kyle McCord and Devin Brown's showings and what made Ohio State's halftime tribute to Dwayne Haskins so powerful. Before Saturday's spring game, both of us also had the opportunity to attend the Ohio State football coaches' clinic on Thursday and Friday, giving us a behind-the-scenes look at what Ohio State's coaches are teaching their players. Dan shares (starting around the 30:30 mark and continuing around the 40-minute mark) what he learned about the new defensive scheme from watching Jim Knowles speak and Griffin explains why Larry Johnson's presentation gave him a new lease on life.In the final 20 minutes of the show, we discuss a handful of other news items from the past week including Jacolbe Cowan entering the transfer portal, why Ohio State is recruiting former USC kicker Parker Lewis, what Sevyn Banks could do at LSU, the commitments of Bryson Rodgers and Dijon Johnson and how Meechie Johnson's departure makes it even more important for the Buckeyes to land a couple more high-quality players from the transfer portal.
In this episode of the Buckeye Weekly Podcast, Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr go back and forth discussing the various things that caught their eye after rewatching the Ohio State spring game. Topics include the offensive line, the defensive ends, Kyle McCord, Kye Stokes, the defense as a whole, and much, much more.
The big recruiting weekend has already paid off for Ohio State as the Buckeyes landed a pair of 2023 prospects from the state of Florida on Sunday: cornerback Dijon Johnson and wide receiver Bryson Rodgers. This has vaulted the Buckeyes to the No. 2 class in the country in '23, per the 247Sports Composite. Also, of course there is going to be plenty of spring game discussion on the show. Which young players helped themselves the most for OSU during the offense's 34-26 win over the defense on Saturday? Three that come to mind immediately are running back Evan Pryor, safety Kye Stokes and corner Jordan Hancock. On the flip side, what is the biggest concern facing Ohio State entering the 2022 season? The biggest news in Ohio State football over the past week wasn't good news for the Buckeyes. That news came on Saturday, when Tennessee linebacker Henry To'o To'o – Ohio State's top target in the transfer portal this year – announced he was transferring to Alabama, thwarting the Buckeyes' plans to add him to the middle of their defense. We start this week's episode by discussing the impact of To'o To'o's decision on the Buckeyes' 2021 linebacker corps and who we expect to start at linebacker now.We also took this week as an opportunity to discuss Ohio State's efforts to compete with Alabama both on the field and on the recruiting trail (starting at 19:13). After Alabama landed transfers from To'o To'o and former Ohio State wide receiver Jameson Williams in the same week, while continuing to battle the Buckeyes for five-star defensive end recruit J.T. Tuimoloau, the Crimson Tide's standing as the team Ohio State is chasing has only increased.Later in the show (33:54), we talk about two players Ohio State did land commitments from last week – three-star defensive backs Kye Stokes and Ryan Turner – and evaluate what the Buckeyes' priorities should be now as they look to continue filling out their recruiting class of 2022.Finally (42:30), we take your questions about what Tuimoloau's role could be if he chooses the Buckeyes, why we believe the stands will be full at Ohio Stadium this fall and which opponent – if any – could be the sleeper opponent on the Buckeyes' regular season schedule.

Ohio State added another commit to its 2022 class over the weekend, from a player many fans may not know much about.Buckeye Scoop's Marc Givler joins host Tom Orr to break down the commitment of Kye Stokes, a 3-star safety from Florida. Where does he project to play in the Ohio State defense? And what does his commitment mean for the rest of the 2022 class? Plus, Marc just teamed up with Bill Greene for the most ambitious project in the history of Buckeye Scoop, the Scoop 100. Marc explains how they put their new national rankings of 2022 prospects together, which player they may be far higher on than other services, which player could be about to take a big jump up the rankings, and where he and Bill had their biggest disagreements.
In This Episode, Chris and Eric talk about the portal move of Juice Williams to Bama, the addition of Kye Stokes to the 2022 recruiting class, we play like it/don't like it for the Buckeyes who were drafted over the weekend into the NFL, and we also continue our 64 sports movie challenge.
Ohio State has to turn its attention to Zach Rice in a big way to avoid another 2021 offensive line situation. On this Tuesday Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com, Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means explain why Jameson Williams transferring from Ohio State to Alabama, given the state of the receiver rooms for both teams, makes sense. Williams announced on Monday that he had chosen the Crimson Tide, and he has a chance to start there this season.Plus, the guys discuss Ohio State's latest verbal commitment from Florida safety Kye Stokes in the Class of 2022.Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com. Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr discuss the transfer of wide receiver Jameson Williams to Alabama. Was it a mistake to let him feel like leaving was his best chance for success? What could he do in the Alabama offense? The fellas also discuss the surprise commitment of safety Kye Stokes. The show then turns toward the school up north for a discussion about a Michigan coach who oddly took a shot at Michigan State on social media.
Ohio State football ties Alabama for most picks in 2021 NFL Draft. Former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is a Chicago Bear. Kye Stokes, three-star Class of 2022 athlete, commits to Ohio State football. Pete Werner became the second Ohio State football player selected in the 2021 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. Ten Ohio State Buckeyes were selected in the 2021 NFL Draft. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
On Sunday, there was a bit of a recruiting surprise as Ohio State landed 3-star prospect Kye Stokes from Florida. However, calling Stokes a 3-star recruit is not something that people will be able to do for much longer as his offer list is extremely impressive and it looks like the Buckeyes landed a good one. Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle for today's show to discuss that and look back on the NFL Draft from Ohio State's perspective. And here's a little tease: the reports that tight end Luke Farrell from OSU (who was taken by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the first pick of the fifth round) is a 29-year-old former minor league baseball player are false. And you will get to hear Patrick and Dave figure that out in real time. All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
