This week Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods give a detailed recap of the final two Pac-12 spring games in the conference, California and Washington. Cal is looking at Purdue transfer Jack Plummer to potentially replace POC favorite Chase Garbers while Washington has a three-way QB battle going on to ring in the new Kalen DeBoer era. The guys also breakdown how the conference did in the NFL Draft (not well) with the fewest picks since the conference expanded to 12 teams. UCLA led the way with six players selected and even though Oregon sent the most players to the NFL Combine, the Ducks had just one player selected (though he did go No. 5 overall). Unfortunately there is more turmoil to talk about at Arizona State with freshman All-American linebacker Eric Gentry leaving for division rival USC and potential All-American defensive tackle Jermayne Lole also hitting the NCAA Transfer Portal. ASU AD Ray Anderson also had some hypocritical things to say about cracking down on cheaters in the conference at the Pac-12 spring meetings according to a report by friend of the pod Bruce Feldman. There is also discussion about Biletnikoff Awarding winning wide receiver Jordan Addison entering the transfer portal and USC's involvement in trying to get him to relocate to Los Angeles. As always Dave and Ryan spend the last part of the show answering your voicemails, texts and emails with questions about Pac-12 football plus lots of other topics. In this episode of the Tape Heads: Draft Season podcast, hosts Bob Wischusen and Greg Cosell welcome former Alabama/NFL QB Greg McElroy to the show.  We discuss the 'traits' that teams look for in a QB and how those look in college football.  Greg explains how most successful guys he's seen start with a mental makeup to navigate the process and gameday execution.  NFL Prospect Matt Corral is the QB that Greg has really been impressed with through his play and preparation.  A few guys in the Draft have the good traits, but almost all of them have faults as well.  A player like Malik Willis needs time and reps as he's a great athlete who needs to learn how to set his feet and not always be on the move.  Greg sees plenty of WR talent in this Draft and tells us why he wouldn't be spending any higher picks when there is value deep in the position. We wrap up with the different evaluations that some players get from different sources. The Tape Heads Podcast is part of the NFL Podcast Network. The NFL and NASCAR combine as a pair of well-known 88's, three-time Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen joins two-time Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. at the table of truth. Olsen opens up to Dale Jr. and co-host Mike Davis about his journey from a local New Jersey football family to playing in the National Football League. The two athletes met years ago, and forged a solid friendship through shared charitable endeavors.. Thanks our new sponsor Ally, Olsen walked into the Bojangles studio ready to hit the ground running. He detailed the ups and downs of his football life and the values instilled in him by his father that he took along with him every step of the way. Dale Jr. and Greg share their thoughts on the psychology of raising children in a sport and that there is more valuable lessons to be learned by a young mind than just winning a game. Pro football player Olsen is now coach-dad on the baseball field for his children's teams..  Olsen talks about the process of being recruited by colleges during his high school football career and the realities involved in the process. We learn that his father made Greg do something very difficult to let down the coaches from the schools that he wasn't choosing. In doing so he taught some valuable lessons. He also reveals his tenure with Notre Dame and the tough decision to vacate the famed Indiana-based academy for the palm trees of Miami beach and the University of Miami Hurricanes. Curiosity over the combine events that scout college players before they are drafter in the NFL, Dale Jr. gets Greg Olsen to open up about his experience at the event. It's a rare peek into what really happens between player reps, scouts and teams during the NFL Combine. It also lets us in the killer-instinct and mental game that Olsen used throughout much of his football career. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound tight end offers his memories of getting drafted by the Chicago Bears in the first round. Then a few years later, one of the worst trades in Bears history sent Olsen to the North Carolina to play for the Carolina Panthers. Olsen saw the majority of his success in Carolina, and gives us a look behind the curtain of NFL locker room life. What was it like playing with star quarterback Cam Newton? Was the polarizing figure a distraction? Olsen also details getting released by the Panthers and the many difficulties he faced in his year with the Seattle Seahawks, from the CoVid-19 pandemic to coaching, that helped lead to his decision to retire from the game. The biggest fight Olsen faced didn't come from a linebacker or a free-safety. It came from within his family. In 2012, he and wife Kara gave birth to twins T.J. and Talbot. T.J. was born with a congenital heart defect that required multiple surgeries, including three open-heart procedures. In 2021, his heart started to fail. T.J. received a heart transplant and is now an active nine-year-old boy. Olsen opens up about the decisions to share the incredibly tough journey with the public. OPEN SEGMENT Before Greg Olsen came into the Dirty Mo Media Bojangles studio, Dale Jr., Mike and the gang unpacked some feelings about the recent news of North Wilkesboro Speedway coming off the Lost Speedways list to host racing again. They explain how it's now up to the fans to prove that North Wilkesboro, and other small market tracks like it, are viable racing facilities, by showing up to the races. Dale's ready to tailgate, are you? The revival has Dale Jr. so excited, that he is even thinking about hopping in a racecar himself at the historic North Carolina track. Wait, what? It's a revelation that had us all floored. New Orleans Saints second-year breakout candidate Pete Werner may be in for an expanded role in 2022. With Kwon Alexander visiting the New York Jets, the path may become more clear in the coming days.  Werner may not have piled on the stat sheet, but what he did well, he did at an impressive level. Despite being thrown into action against the Miami Dolphins with little prep, he played the defensive quarterback role extremely well and has earned a bigger role next season. Which NFL Draft wide receivers, offensive linemen, and linebackers fit the Saints draft prototypes and could be selected if the Saints invest at their positions? Why Treylon Burks, Drake London, and Christian Watson are the most comfortable fits, but Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson's sub 4.4 40 times at the NFL Combine could put them in conversation despite size thresholds. 299: Tony Villani on NFL Combine Speed, Game Speed, and Focusing Where it Counts

Just Fly Performance Podcast

Today's show welcomes Tony Villlani, sports performance coach and owner of XPE sports in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.  Tony has coached over twenty #1 finishes in the NFL combine and is the creator of the Game Speed and Separation Movement Web.  Tony has worked with many of the top NFL players in the league, but will tell you that his learning from those athletes was a much bigger deal in Tony's development than the fact that he “trained them”. Clearly you have to have a level of speed that's well above average to be successful at many high level sports.  At the same time, the fastest athletes in sports where having a level of speed is important, such as at the NFL combine, are not the successful ones in pro-football. Interestingly, the fastest receivers in the history of the combine have never had truly successful careers.  This brings up the question, not only why this is, but also, how can we distribute our training efforts over time to optimize the way that athletes actually move on the field?  Clearly, we need to work to get athletes fast in a linear sense, but how much are we helping if we overly focus on linear speed (and spend lots of time hair splitting linear speed in twitter arguments) and don't address the types of speed utilized in sport. Tony deeply understands the nuances and categories of direction change in sport, and actively trains these components in his sessions.  This isn't to say that Tony doesn't love traditional speed training (just look at his combine success) but he also loves building speed that gives athletes the highest chance of success in their sport. On the show today, Tony talks about how he “ratios” linear speed training to game-speed training, as well as how he frames NFL combine style training in light of game speed to those trainees.  He'll get into why he feels that the fastest athletes in the history of the combine have never been the best actual football players, and then gets into a substantial layout of his key points in change of direction training.  Tony also lists some key aspects of offensive and defensive agility, as well as how agility can differ between sports.  This was a podcast that you'll never forget if you train any type of athlete for speed in their sport. (though this podcast have been more on the side of CLA approach etc. but no matter where you are on the drill to CLA spectrum, you can learn a ton from tony's work. ) Today's episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster and Lost Empire Herbs. Timestamps and Main Points: 6:15 – How having young children has taught Tony about the process of athletic development 7:50 – Tony's take on the balance of how linear and game-speed training should progress as an athlete develops 21:20 – Tony's thoughts on why the very fastest NFL receivers in the combine actually never had a good playing career 30:35 – Approaching linear speed development when an athlete is truly not as fast as they need to be from that perspective 37:35 – Tony's take on the inverse relationship between the 40 yard dash times and 3-cone/shuttle events in the NFL combine 43:05 – How Tony feels the NFL combine agility tests transfer to performance, and what he does for agility instead 56:05 – Comparing types of game speed between athletes, and the general zones of speed pro football athletes will use in competitions 1:03:35 – Tony's finer-point breakdown of change of direction technique 1:09:50 – How Tony views “first chance” opportunity in change of direction (one point of attack opportunity) in football vs. basketball or soccer “Everyone should get as fast as they can possibly get with their own genetics, but after that, I turn off the (linear) speed switch”
