Magic formats are the sum of all their pieces, or so we would think. But as we get further and further away from the start of Magic the Gathering, the impact is felt much less. With Pioneer it's different. We get a little bit from every new set and plane we visit. While not one set has a stranglehold on the format, the loss of one would affect Pioneer considerably. That's why we enjoy doing these episodes where we explore Pioneer and find out where each plane fits in to the format. As we near the end of this journey of exploration, only a few planes remain. Today it's the plane of Dominaria and the planes of Magic Origins. To understand the planes of Magic Origins, Kevin gives us a short lesson on all 10 planes involved and we talk about the background story for each. We also discuss what archetypes the planes enable, what mechanics they introduce, and also go over what cards we think will have a big impact on Pioneer and ones that have already made quite the splash. After getting a GP and a bunch of drafts under their belts, the guys break down what strategies are working and which aren't.  Luis's Cooking Level Up Info: Brine - 1/2 cup salt per 2 quarts water plus 2 bay leaves - use this before roasting anything (chicken, beef, pork) and it will be much better. The crew discusses Week One tournament results for Magic Origins and the new Play Points changes for MTGO.

This episode begins with a brief recap of the Magic Origins Prerelease that Mike and Chewie went to. Then we head over to the San Diego Comic-Con Magic panel, which was really just about story and flavor. Fun stuff. After that we go into Brian's topic idea, and boy is it a good one. Since Magic Origins seems to be so universally lauded, we figure it won't be too long until WotC decides to do Magic Origins 2. So we're checking out the remaining planeswalkers and trying to figure out whose origin should be spotlighted! PREVIEWS! Magic Origins is right around the corner, so we've got a lot of cards to hit! Since the new preview method makes hitting every card virtually impossible, we're just hitting up the mythics and then whatever else catches our eye. There are a lot of awesome cards in the new set, so we're pretty excited! There's also some discussion at the beginning about the upcoming rules changes. We're joined by another Kickstarter backer this week! Aaron comes on to talk about being That Guy. No no, not THAT That Guy. Not one of the bad ones. But the guy that's been playing forever and has lots of cards and lots of decks and actually has some money to spend on the game. Some casual players frown on That Guy, which gives That Guy some kind of stigma. Aaron wants to address that stigma and help change the opinion of That Guy. That Guy might not be all bad. After taking an unintentional week off, we're back with another of our Kickstarter backers! This week Elliot Hunter (@erjhunter) joins us, and he's awesome! We know this is a really long episode, just think of it as a bonus since you didn't get a new episode last week. First off there is a tiny bit of news involving the planeswalkers in Magic Origins! The ten planes that comprise their original planes and the destination of their first planejump! Then there's the little matter of the draft pick heard 'round the world, Pascal Maynard's pseudo-controversial GP Vegas Top 8 draft pick of a foil Tarmogoyf. In Dirk's Creature Corner, we like to point out how the various creatures (zombies/merfolk thus far) differ from plane to plane. But what if we did that for creatures that don't really merit a Creature Corner? BRILLIANT! For the first edition of this segment Elliot wanted to cover one of the most iconic creatures that are found across most of the planes - GOBLINS!
