Episode Summary In this episode, I sit down with Celia to explore something we don't often stop to think about: how much of our identity is actually shaped by choice. From design in our everyday lives to the deeper layers of heritage and archaeology, we unpack how identity isn't fixed — it's constructed through our environment, our experiences, and the decisions we make along the way. Celia shares her personal journey through major life transitions, including parenthood and relocation, and how archaeology and heritage can meaningfully support well-being during times of change. We also dive headfirst into one of today's biggest conversations: AI and its impact on jobs, society, and the future of work. Is AI replacing us — or redefining us? We talk about transferable skills, ethical regulation, social prescribing, and why AI might reflect existing systemic problems rather than create new ones. This conversation is thoughtful, honest, and future-focused — and it might just change how you see both your identity and your role in an AI-driven world.
Tonight, we open the forbidden folder and dive into The Apocalypse of Adam, an ancient Gnostic text from the Nag Hammadi Library. From Adam as a cosmic whistleblower to hidden knowledge, false rulers, the Orsini family, the Grey Pope, and Antichrist conspiracy lore, this episode traces how ancient apocalypse becomes modern conspiracy mythology.
», peut-on lire. John and Jim welcome back special guest Felicity Kusinitz to discuss the Colin Baker era finale - a story that generates surprising ratings diversity and sparks debate about Eric Saward's best (or most problematic) work. Production Background: Director Graham Harper returns after "Caves of Androzani" to helm this two-part adventure, the last to be shot using film for location work. John shares fascinating details about Eric Saward writing the script while vacationing in Rhodes, drawing inspiration from Evelyn Waugh's satirical novel The Loved One, and Greek locations providing character names. The story features newly constructed Daleks for the first time since "Planet of the Daleks," plus some surprising casting stories - including Sir Laurence Olivier being approached to play... the mutant. Best and Worst Guest Stars: Jim declares this story contains both the best and worst guest stars ever - a proclamation that generates immediate discussion. Eleanor Bron's appearance delights Jim (who knew her from "Help!" and "Bedazzled"), while the DJ character sparks the episode's most heated debate. The hosts and Felicity find themselves split on whether this comedic character works or derails the story's tone. The Duo Dynamic: The hosts examine Eric Saward's interesting structural choice of populating the story with paired characters - from Orsini and Bostock (the assassin and his squire) to Jobel and Tasambeker, Kara and Vogel, and more. Discussion explores whether this represents a Robert Holmes homage and how these relationships drive the narrative. Davros as Emperor Palpatine: Jim presents his case for Davros completing his transformation into Emperor Palpatine, complete with blue lightning and manipulation tactics. The hosts debate the character's evolution, Terry Molloy's performance, and the story's handling of Davros versus the "real" Daleks. The Mortuary Planet Concept: Jim shares his fascination with funeral home settings in science fiction, praising the story's dark humor and satire. Discussion covers the story's Soylent Green elements, the disturbing glass Daleks, and whether the various subplots serve or detract from the core narrative. Perry's Accent Meta-Moment: The hosts discuss the scene where DJ asks "Is that your real accent?" - exploring what the production team knew about Nicola Bryant's secret by this point. Listener Perspectives: Jameson and Jamie Girl weigh in with contrasting views on the DJ character, Herbert from "Timelash," and the season's violence levels. Final Ratings: The three hosts land across the spectrum - demonstrating this story's divisive nature even among those who generally enjoy it. Felicity's Colin Baker Era Assessment: The returning guest shares her overall thoughts on Season 22, Colin Baker's Doctor, and her relationship with Perry as a companion. Coming Up Next: Special Hiatus Content: Patreon Exclusive (Next Week): John and Jim cover "Slipback" - the BBC Radio 4 audio drama featuring Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant that aired during the 18-month hiatus. Patreon Exclusive (Week After): A deep dive into the missing Season 23 - examining what stories were planned, what could have worked, and where to find them in expanded media through Big Finish and Target novels. Main Feed: Classic Patreon episodes will be released for non-subscribers during the two-week break. Regular Patreon Episode (Monday): Episode 159 concludes the Steve Parkhouse comic run with his final story "Once Upon a Time Lord." In this episode of Vertical Playpen, Phil Brown and Celia Orsini delve into the intersection of archaeology and identity, exploring how understanding our past can enhance our sense of belonging and well-being. Celia shares her personal journey with archaeology, emphasizing the importance of landscape and community in shaping identity. The conversation highlights the role of empathy and communication in teams, the shift in community needs towards connection, and practical exercises for understanding identity through objects. Celia's insights provide valuable tools for fostering a sense of belonging in a world increasingly marked by loneliness. Archaeology is fundamentally about identity processes. Understanding our past helps us build community and belonging. Experiencing landscapes can create emotional connections. Identity is a fluid process influenced by our choices. Empathy is essential for effective communication in teams. Shared experiences build trust and foster collaboration. The need for community has shifted from political tensions to addressing loneliness. Practical exercises can help individuals explore their identity. Objects on our desks can reflect our personal stories and connections. Identity construction is an ongoing process that can be improved.

Now with up to 16 hours of Category 1 AMA CME Credits! https://www.doctorsandlitigation.com/LEAP/signup Our first conversation in Season 3 is with Dr. Anthony Orsini of The Orsini Way. Communication with patients or families after unexpected medical events is crucial, but most of us have no formal training in how to do it well. Compassionate and skilled conversations can pave the way for understanding and closure for families. However, when handled poorly or defensively, these conversations can create resentment, distrust, and anger, which can also make litigation more likely. What do patients and families want from us in these moments? What do we do with our body language? What happens if we cry? Can we show compassion by touch, on the hand or the shoulder? Why is this so difficult? Have we lost our humanity in the name of professionalism? Dr. Orsini has spent the last 25 years developing proven communication techniques that help doctors build rapport and quickly form trusting relationships with their patients. Come along as we discuss evidence based strategies to handling these conversations better.

Economy Energy Costs Now ‘Main Issue' For US Ally That Barred Nuclear Power Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said high energy costs are the most critical economic issue for her country Italy has embraced green energy and enacted a ban on nuclear power that has lasted nearly 40 years, though the nation's Council of Ministers and Meloni have recently moved to reintroduce the technology, joining other European countries like Belgium, Denmark and Germany that are also reconsidering their turns away from nuclear power. Emanuele Orsini — the head of Italy's largest business lobby — called for Meloni to cut energy costs and pave the way for a return to nuclear energy at the annual assembly for Confindustria, where Meloni again acknowledged her country's energy problems, Reuters reported. “Our companies continue to suffer from an energy (price) surcharge of more than 35% over the European average, even reaching peaks of 80% when compared to the largest European countries,” Orsini said at the assembly, according to Reuters.
Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss this audiobook's stellar cast as they conjure the American Dust Bowl. Sophie Amoss's narration shimmers as the Antidote, a "prairie witch" who takes verbal deposits; Asphodel Oletsky, a teen recently orphaned when her mom was murdered, is vividly portrayed by Elena Rey; and the masterful Mark Bramhall inhabits the sane, sensitive, long-suffering wheat farmer, Harp Oletsky. Highlights include dramatic dust and wind descriptions, a talking scarecrow, and a camera that makes its own photos of the past, the present, and a possible future. I have been reminded over and over again in recent weeks of the preciousness of life as numerous dear friends and family members face loss of loved ones and their own life-altering health crises. This got me to thinking about how much my mentors have shaped my life. So with this latest episode I inaugurate a new Countermelody series entitled “Honor Your Mentors.” I have already posted numerous times on the podcast about my beloved teacher John Wustman. This coming July my friend and colleague Chanda VanderHart's monumental book Accompaniment in America: Contextualizing Collaborative Piano, co-authored with Kathleen Kelly and Elvia Puccinelli, will be published by Routledge. Chanda has put together an astonishing digital archive featuring a wealth of material related to the book: https://accompanimentinamerica.website/index.html Included in this material is an interview I did with Chanda about Mr. Wustman. Chanda has given me permission to include that interview on my podcast. This is supplemented by a sampling of (mostly) studio recordings of John featuring, among others, Régine Crespin, Carlo Bergonzi, Brigitte Fassbaender, Luciano Pavarotti, and Irina Arkhipova: truly an astonishing feast for the ears! Additionally, I was enormously saddened last week to read of the death of Joan Caplan, my first serious voice teacher in New York, and a phenomenal singer in her own right. Joan also remained a close friend through the years. In recent years she had been living at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey. I was able to visit her there last summer and had intended to go see her again later this month. Alas, that can no longer happen, but I will also be featuring Joan in an upcoming episode in the “Honor Your Mentors” series. In her memory today, I present her in a scintillating recording of Orsini's Brindisi from Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia. Finally, though I'm sure no one needs to be reminded of this, please, my dears, tell all those you love how much they mean to you; don't wait until their funerals to give them their flowers! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.
In this episode, John Orsini, Executive VP and CFO of Northwestern Medicine, shares insights into managing financial sustainability amid federal reimbursement challenges, the health system's strategic focus on service line growth, and how innovations like AI and hospital-at-home programs are shaping the future of care.

Difficult Conversations -Lessons I learned as an ICU Physician
In this podcast episode, Dr. Anthony Orsini discusses the value of difficult conversations in the medical field, reflecting on how his podcast has allowed him to connect with incredible people over the years. He reintroduces Dr. Robert Pearl, a former CEO of Kaiser Permanente, who first appeared on the podcast in 2021. Dr. Orsini highlights Dr. Pearl's work and his new book, "ChatGPTMD: How AI-Empowered Patients & Doctors Can Take Back Control of American Medicine," which explores the role of AI in healthcare. Dr. Pearl emphasizes the broken state of the healthcare system, particularly the inefficiencies and challenges surrounding chronic disease management. He advocates for the integration of AI in medicine, arguing that it can enhance patient care, reduce costs, and ultimately save lives if clinicians are willing to embrace the technology.Dr. Pearl discusses how generative AI, like ChatGPT, can revolutionize the way healthcare is delivered by providing tools that make the practice more efficient and effective. However, both he and Dr. Orsini acknowledge the importance of maintaining the human element in medicine. They stress that while AI can assist with diagnoses and administrative tasks, the physician's role in building relationships and providing compassionate care remains irreplaceable. The conversation ends with a call for healthcare professionals to actively engage with AI to harness its potential while preserving the critical human touch that defines quality patient care.
