Four years ago, right before the world stopped, Matt and Garrett spoke about the Bad Boys franchise with the returning Michael Guarnieri. After at least one of the podcasters got a surprising amount of enjoyment out of Bad Boys For Life, they were all under the impression that the franchise was done, deciding to go out on a high note. But money talks, and Will Smith slaps. After slugging Chris Rock at the Oscar ceremony a couple years later, he found himself with a little PR problem. What better way to fix it than bringing the band back together for a fifth Bad Boys movie. Join Garrett, Matt, and Mike as they look at Bad Boys Ride or Die and decide if they were to stop now, would it once again be on a high note. After going through the entire Batman retrospective, the boys were looking for a different kind of retro for a follow-up. With no Scorsese and only a few DiCaprio films in their resume from the Aftertaste years, it was decided that their next venture would be the film team-ups of Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. Much like the boys were at the end of last year, the careers of Scorsese and DiCaprio were at a crossroads in the early 2000s. The veteran director was in dire need of a hit, and the superstar actor was trying hard to shed the sheen of Titanic and move on with his career. So, Scorsese dusted off a script he had been working on called Gangs of New York, and the Weinsteins were happy to finance it, as long as DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz were cast. But were those the only compromises the director needed to make? Join Garrett, Matt, and the returning (Jeopardy contestant) Michael Guarnieri as they start their look at the five films in this retrospective, and answer the question of whether Gangs of New York was worth Scorsese's nearly 30 year wait to get it made.

Manoj Nelliyattu, "M. Night" Shyamalan has had one of Hollywood's most interesting stories that could well have come from one of his scripts. After two independent movies which amounted to little success, Shyamalan set the world afire with 1999's The Sixth Sense, which took critics off guard, gathering six Academy Award nominations and rolling to an almost $700 million box office take, making it the most successful horror film all the way until 2017, when It finally knocked it off. But after a financial and critical success such as that, where do you go from there? Join myself, Matt, and the returning Michael Guarnieri as we take the journey to answering that question, which we begin with The Sixth Sense and will eventually lead to Shyamalan's new film Old, scheduled for release this July. It's finally here. After seven months of build up, Old, the cultivation of the Binge Movie Aftertaste M Night Shyamalan Retrospective, has hit theaters. But it almost didn't. After reading the graphic novel Sand Castle, which was given to him by his daughter, Shyamalan saw a story both in the book and out of it that he wanted to tell. But road blocks, which came in the form of everything from Covid to hurricanes, were in his way. But M Night persevered. And the question is, is the result of all that work made by the M Night who had an ego the size of the ocean in this movie? Or is this humbled M Night, a man who is still trying to prove himself after being beaten down by both audiences and critics alike? And how much will Matt hate it? After all, we know what resulted the last time M Night adapted someone else's work. Listen below as our Old review is finally here. And be sure to keep listening to the end as we reveal some things that are coming up on this show later on in the year (yes that was a hint). Old (2021) (?/10, ?/10, ?/10) CLICK ABOVE TO LISTEN NOW! Armed with a 'best of' the M Night Eastrail 777 Trilogy' cast at his disposal (as well as the eager to work with M Night Sarah Paulson) Shyamalan set forth on ending the journey these characters had taken to finally meet. So where does one go when their one attempt at franchising a property completely bombs? Why, work with one of the most ego driven father/son duos of the 2000s of course. It would seem odd that M Night Shyamalan, the man who was well renown for his original stories, would take a project after being hand picked by Will Smith to take it on. With Smith coming up with the story and then eventually taking it into Tom Cruise's Oblivion territory by having it take place 1000 years in the future. In 2006, M Night Shyamalan's career was at a crossroads. The days of him being proclaimed the 'New Spielberg' were far behind him. Yet that didn't keep him from attempting a modern retelling of E.T. Beginning as a bedtime story he wrote for his children, Shyamalan wrote a script based on his own story convinced that Disney would put it in lights and proclaim him a genius. Yet, that didn't happen. Executives at the Mouse House rejected it in droves. So Night took his ball to Warner Bros, convinced that he would be able to stuff his talent in Disney's faces. It was a script that before being made, cost a high ranking Disney official his job because of his confidence in it. The Sixth Sense, credited with jump starting the career of M Night Shyamalan, as well as reigniting the career of Bruce Willis, wasn't given a chance of being much more than a blip on the Hollywood radar screen. So much so that Entertainment Weekly, a magazine that previews each and every summer movie, didn't even include it in its 300 plus movie preview. What was it about the movie that made it such a success, does it hold up, and what will Mike think as he watches it for the very first time? Join myself, Matt, and Mike as we begin a series that has been over five years in the making. How? Listen below to find out. The Sixth Sense (1999) (?/10, ?/10, ?/10) CLICK ABOVE TO LISTEN NOW! In 1995, Will Smith and Michael Bay were names known for things that were well outside the realm of blockbuster filmmaking. Oh sure, Bay had done quite a few well received music videos, and Smith was in millions of homes and stereos as The Fresh Prince. But once Bad Boys was released, everything changed. Smith became a huge box office draw and Bay would go on to make five films that contained robots fighting which we covered on this podcast last year. So what happened to the once top billed Martin Lawrence? And why are we getting Bad Boys For Life a mere 17 years following the second installment? Those are among the many things this retrospective featuring myself, Matt, and Michael Guarnieri, will explore. It had no reason to be a box office success. It had no reason to be well reviewed. Yet, despite being in development for 17 years, a January release date, and original director Michael Bay being replaced by two unproven directors from Belgium, Bad Boys For Life has outgrossed its $90 million budget and has already been greenlit for a sequel. But is it as good as its critical success would suggest? Join Matt, Mike, and myself as we go down the road that is Bad Boys For Life and do everything from compare it to Gemini Man to wondering what the future holds for Sony's surprisingly successful Bad Boys franchise. Oh, not to mention give ratings out of ten. How will we feel about it? Special thanks to Matt, and especially Mike, who took this journey through the Bad Boys franchise without having seen a bit of it beforehand. Did he have a good time? Listen below to find out! So what happened to the once top billed Martin Lawrence? And why are we getting Bad Boys For Life a mere 17 years following the second installment? Those are among the many things this retrospective featuring myself, Matt, and Michael Guarnieri, will explore. In 2003, two out of the three principle stars of the Bad Boys franchise needed a hit. Director Michael Bay was two years removed from a strike out at an attempt at credibility with 2001's Pearl Harbor, and Martin Lawrence was doing, well, Martin Lawrence things. Will Smith, on the other hand, was newly minted as an Oscar nominee for Ali. But he also was coming off a pretty bad one two punch, this one containing Legend of Bagger Vance and Wild Wild West. So eight years after the first Bad Boys was released, all three stars finally came together for its sequel. Which is what we are here to discuss. Bad Boys II. A film both reviled and loved by many. What else is new with Michael Bay? Yet, how will we feel about it? Listen to Matt, Mike, and myself dissect the, uhhh, plot to the film, and try to determine if Joey Pants had a career immediately following its release. Be sure to check back next week as all three of us will return for a full review of Bad Boys For Life! Bad Boys II (2003) (?/10, ?/10, ?/10) CLICK ABOVE TO LISTEN NOW! Those are among the many things this retrospective featuring myself, Matt, and Michael Guarnieri, will explore. Bad Boys is known as the movie which launched the careers of Michael Bay and Will Smith. But what many don't realize is the skepticism that met the two Hollywood powerhouses when they stepped on that initial set. Bay still has negative things to say about how the studio treated him on his first feature, and Smith has had to be convinced both times to come back with checks that made his accountant very proud. But what about the quality of the movie? And does the $9 million film hold up today. Join myself, Matt, and special guest Michael Guarnieri as we move from last year's Michael Mann retrospective right to two films directed by the one and only Michael Bay. The conversation covers everything from how much credit does Bay's cinematographer deserve all the way to if this was indeed the movie which inspired the much forgotten Cuba Gooding Jr/Skeet Ulrich starring Chill Factor, among many more topics. For the first retrospective of 2019, I wanted to take the Aftertaste into realms it hadn’t been in. Yes we have covered a variety of franchises and film series. But one thing we haven’t done is focus on the resume of one filmmaker and one filmmaker only. Who better to do this with than the master of the ‘ultimate man film’, Michael Mann. With a wide variety of films and a meticulous style that has attempted to be replicated but has never been duplicated, Mann presents quite a set of films to look at. In order to do so, we once again brought in Michael Guarnieri from the Hannibal Lecter Retrospective to do what he had originally contacted me to do to begin with. A Michael Mann Retrospective. It's here. After almost three months of build-up, we have finally reached the end of our Michael Mann Retrospective with 2015's Black Hat. No, not a movie based the Edgar Allan Poe story. This one is about Thor Chris Hemswoth playing a brilliant hacker. In other words, a movie just as believable. Join myself, Matt, and Mike as we review the movie that didn't have many good reviews when it came out but amazingly ended up on some Best of 2015 lists. We also rate each movie we have reviewed in order of our least to most favorite, as well as finally answer the question of why Mike hates Chris Hemsworth so much. Thanks again to my podcast partners for the amazing ride this retrospective was, as well as you all for listening. Stay tuned, more retros are right around the corner! In order to do so, we once again brought in Michael Guarnieri from the Hannibal Lecter Retrospective to do what he had originally contacted me to do to begin with. A Michael Mann Retrospective. Leaving the ego of Jamie Foxx far behind, Michael Mann returned to the big screen in 2009 with a film detailing the bank robberies of John Dillinger called Public Enemies. Now, he had the star power of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, along with Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, at his side, and as a result gathered a $200 million hit. But is it any good? Listen as myself, Mike, and Matt go down the final home stretch of Michael Mann's career with the first of two podcasts this week. And be sure to sit through the bloopers as well, as Matt makes a dare that all Bingers should ensure he follows up on.
