Although Barry Morphew has not been named a suspect or person of interest, Nancy Grace explains why the evidence points towards him. The autopsy results revealed that Suzanne had been shot with animal tranquilizers, and a tranquilizer cap was found in the Morphew's dryer. Barry had initially suggested that Suzanne went out for a bike ride and was possibly eaten by a mountain lion, but this theory is highly unlikely. The investigation and legal proceedings are ongoing. An autopsy report released Monday by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has finally shed light on the mysterious death of Suzanne Morphew, a Colorado mom who vanished in May 2020. According to the autopsy conducted by the El Paso County coroner, Suzanne Morphew's death was classified as homicide caused by intoxication from drugs commonly used to sedate wildlife, with no physical trauma observed on her body. Suzanne Morphew, 49, disappeared while on a bike ride near her home in Chaffee County. Her case remained cold until her remains were unexpectedly discovered last September in Moffat, Colorado, approximately 90 minutes south of her last known location. The remains were found during an unrelated investigation. The autopsy identified the substances leading to her death as butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine—drugs typically marketed as a compounded injectable chemical immobilizer for wildlife. "These findings suggest a deeply troubling scenario behind Suzanne's disappearance and death," stated the autopsy report. Her husband, Barry Morphew, who was previously charged with her murder in 2021, had those charges dropped just before his trial in April 2022 due to insufficient evidence. Since then, no new arrests have been made in connection with Suzanne's death. "The investigative team assembled to work this case continues to follow the evidence and only the evidence as we seek justice for Suzanne's death," said CBI Director Chris Schaefer. In a statement issued through their attorney, the Morphew family described the profound impact of the case on their lives, emphasizing the distress caused by the false accusations against Barry Morphew and the lack of closure. "The Morphews are left with more questions than answers and a lack of justice for Suzanne, the family, and the community," the statement read. Adding to the complexity of the case, Suzanne Morphew's clothes and a weathered bullet were found alongside her remains. Barry Morphew and his daughters Macy and Mallory have publicly criticized the investigation's narrow focus and claimed that authorities have not provided information about whether the bullet or the clothing was tested for DNA evidence. In May 2023, Barry Morphew and his daughters spoke out in an ABC News interview after filing a lawsuit against the prosecutors, accusing them of wrongful charges. "They've got tunnel vision and they looked at one person and they've got too much pride to say they're wrong and look somewhere else," Barry Morphew said. "I don't have anything to worry about. I've done nothing wrong." The case continues to attract significant public interest, with many hoping that the new autopsy findings will lead to a breakthrough in the investigation. Meanwhile, the community and the Morphew family await justice for Suzanne, whose life was tragically cut short under mysterious and alarming circumstances. Suzanne Morphew was reported missing from Maysville, Colorado, on May 10, 2020, Mother's Day. Her bicycle was found at the bottom of a ravine that evening.   As friends came forward and investigators learned more about Suzanne, the investigation pointed in one direction— to Suzanne's husband Barry Morphew, who claims the two had a “perfect” marriage. Meanwhile, Suzanne was secretly documenting abuse and, by her friend's accounts, preparing to leave him and start a new life.   In a case that appeared to be open and shut, a DNA sample found in Suzanne's car put the prosecution's entire case in jeopardy, and some suspect that those involved with the prosecution were corrupt from the start.   After three long years, Suzanne's body was found on September 22, 2023, in a location that wasn't even on detectives' radar, leaving them to reinvestigate Suzanne's entire case. In a shocking twist in the longstanding case of Suzanne Morphew's disappearance, authorities have finally located the remains of the Colorado mother of two. The discovery was made in Saguache County during an unrelated investigation, three years after Suzanne mysteriously vanished during a bike ride near her Maysville, Colorado home on Mother's Day, May 10, 2020.    The case had gained significant media attention since the day the 49-year-old mother vanished. "The heart-wrenching tale of Suzanne, who was last seen on that fateful Mother's Day bike ride, has haunted our community. The recovery of her remains is a significant breakthrough," said a source close to the case.    The story takes several twists and turns. Following Suzanne's initial disappearance, search teams located her bike and helmet, but the whereabouts of her body remained a mystery until the recent discovery.    Her husband, Barry Morphew, during an interview with FOX 21 in August 2020, expressed profound distress regarding her disappearance, saying it was "the most devastating thing that has ever happened to me." It's noteworthy that nearly a year after she went missing, Barry was indicted on charges of first-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence, and attempting to influence a public servant. He later entered a plea of not guilty.    However, the court saga took another twist when Assistant District Attorney Linda Stanley opted to drop the charges "without prejudice." This legal maneuver means that the charges against Barry can be reinstated in the future. Prosecutors, at the time, noted they believed they were on the verge of locating Suzanne's body and needed more time for thorough investigations.    One of the crucial pieces of evidence against Barry was a 129-page affidavit, which PEOPLE had previously reviewed. In it, investigators shared a January 2021 conversation where they informed Barry about an extramarital affair Suzanne had for almost two years before her disappearance. Barry's reaction was both contemplative and cryptic. He stated, "maybe in God's eyes this was his way of resolving something." He further grappled with the divine implications of the tragedy, expressing confusion over why such an event would happen.    Subsequent sections of the affidavit paint a disturbing image, suggesting that Barry may have treated Suzanne like prey, allegedly trying to "hunt and control Suzanne like he had hunted and controlled animals."    The Morphew family, reeling from the allegations and subsequent release, made their emotions public in a conversation with ABC News. Barry expressed frustration at the prosecutors, believing they had wrongly accused him. His words conveyed deep frustration: "They've [prosecutors] got tunnel vision and they looked at one person and they've got too much pride to say they're wrong and look somewhere else." His daughter Mallory echoed this sentiment, pleading for justice for her mother and criticizing the perceived missteps in the prosecution.    Barry's attorney, Iris Eytan, in a candid conversation with PEOPLE in 2022, articulated her belief that even if Suzanne's remains were found, there would be no link to her client.    Following the recent discovery of Suzanne's remains, Eytan issued a heart-wrenching statement on behalf of the Morphew family. The statement read, “Barry is with his daughters, and they are all struggling with immense shock and grief after learning today that their mother and wife whom they deeply love was found deceased."    Suzanne's story had reverberated within the community, especially after her sister shared on a local radio show that the missing mother had once voiced "concerns about her safety" before she vanished.    As of now, the question on everyone's mind is whether Barry Morphew will face a renewed round of charges in light of this discovery. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation, responsible for the announcement regarding Suzanne's body identification, remains tight-lipped on the subject. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
