M.Night Shyamalan's career was in the dumpster after the release of 2010's The Last Airbender, so hitching his spaceship to superstar Will Smith seemed a smart move for his next project, 2013's After Earth. Unfortunately the film proved more an excuse for nepotism as Smith was sidelined for his son Jayden, and rumors of Scientology's alleged involvement didn't help its prospects with audiences and critics. Join Sebastian and Rodney as they argue the merits of flying squirrel suits, cgi monkeys and this mess of a post apocalyptic father son adventure.

Clint and Austin wake up in a pool in the Midwest with no memory of how they got there or why they're both wearing heavy ponchos. After Clint's partner, Lindsey, helps them escape, Austin receives a call from a director whose name rhymes with N. Kite Babylon - he shares a prophecy (aka a veiled threat): "High on Hollywood WILL return or the world must forever watch After Earth." Hearing that, Clint and Austin get to work immediately. N. Fight Shabbython's call sparks the idea to discuss Unbreakable (2000). Hilarity ensues.

Can we experience our experiences without taking photographs of them? This is one of the many questions asked in Jett and Gareth's look at the brilliant, picaresque horror film from Alex Garland: Civil War. Along the way they relate the movie to such work as Andor, Cold Mountain, Salvador and even After Earth, and decide we all need an avalanche of kindness in the world. French philosopher René Girard is in the mix as well, along with thoughts on the career of Anthony Perkins. Also we spoil the end of The Godfather Part III. #GentleJesse Apple - The Film Talk Spotify - The Film Talk Facebook.com/TheFilmTalk To contact Jett and Gareth go to: info@thefilmtalk.com Or leave a voicemail message at: Speakpipe.com/TheFilmTalk To see on Threads what Jett is getting up to: Threads.net/@jett_loe
Ah geeze. Ahhhh geeze. Listen. Okay. You didn't see this one. No one did. BUT YA KNOW MAYBE YOU SHOULD HAVE. MAYBE IT'S GREAT. Maybe, if we put aside our bad judgements and leave our cynicism at the door, maybe we found ourselves a little hidden gem here.......... ya know? Maybe? Ah geeze.Set a thousand years after humanity abandoned Earth due to a cataclysmic event, After Earth follows the story of legendary Ranger Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and his eager but inexperienced son Kitai (Jaden Smith). When their spacecraft crashes on the now-dangerous Earth, Cypher is critically injured. Kitai must embark on a perilous journey across the hostile planet to locate a beacon and signal for help, all while learning to trust his instincts and overcome his fears.
Today we are joined by Will Smith expert Davis Wallace to review After Earth (2013). This film lacked charisma, direction, and entertainment, but if you can look past all of the flaws you get a movie about family, resilience and overcoming adversity. In this episode we discuss the ridiculous tech used in the movie, the laughable dialogue and accents, and a surprising bond formed by our hero and a bird. Plus, prepare to have your mind blown for what could have been next if this movie wasn't a box office blunder.
Jay Anthony has been singing and training as a singer since he was a toddler in church and now, having worked as a model, acted in commercials and as a movie extra, and after a couple of false starts, he is launching a career as a recording artist. His first song, dropping on February 9, is a beautiful, old-school R&B love song, “It's U 4 Me.”“Really, I'm walking into my destiny, which is music,” he said. “I thought I had lost the passion for it, because of life experiences, but it's still there. It's still in me.”Jay's passion, skill and talent shine in his debut song. His baritone voice flows like a river over the lyrics. He takes the ends of his lines up and down the notes like water running over rocks.I don't know what It is that makes me love you girl. I don't know what is, but you are my world. Might be the crazy things you do.Mmm mmm Baby it's you for me.“It's a fun song, basically about the characteristics in a relationship, about a man liking a woman, you know? He can't wait to get home to her — she is his world. It's a really feel-good song.”Jay has been singing since he was 3 or 4 years old, writing since about age 12. His first solo performance, in church, also came at 12. Professional vocal and musical training and work in the studio began at 14.Early attempts to begin a musical career — including contract demos and an audition for American Idol — did not pan out.“So, I'm like, ‘You know what, I'm done,' and then I started modeling.”His other work included the commercials and a part as an extra in a Will Smith movie (After Earth).“Other doors opened for me, and I took advantage of those doors. It was an honor working with Will Smith and meeting him, one of the coolest people ever. He was humble, the way he treated me,” he said. But the heart for music was always there. “It was always the music that I had a passion for.”The desire to be a professional singer came from Michael Jackson, “the first time I heard his voice,” he said. “He's my reason for singing.” The song was “I'll Be There.”He had other influences as well: Whitney Houston, Kem, John P. Kee, Frank Sinatra, Usher, Tank, Sam Cooke, John Legend, Patti Labelle. And Luther Vandross, who has special significance.“My voice changed,” he said. “Going through puberty, Luther really helped me to fall in love with my voice, with the change from being a little boy soprano to going deep. He kept me singing, and my mother and I got me a vocal coach and I worked through it.”His music began in gospel, and it remains as one of his musical staples. “I am a believer, and God is my first love.” His music will have gospel, soul, country, pop and a lot of R&B.“You're gonna get a mix of everything in my music,” he said. His dream and goal — he also calls it his mission — is to be a full-time recording and performing artist, “to inspire and nurture the human spirit through music.” “I want to release my music to the world. Tour. Put out an album. Get a band, go full time. That's the goal, because it's time. It's time.”In his early 30s, it's time. He is working on an EP to come out later this year. In addition to records, albums and shows, he wants to write some jingles, do some television, some film. “I'm turning back to my love of music,” he said. “The modeling and stuff, I did that, but it was always music for me. Like, the ‘you' for me is the music.”Connect to Jay Anthony on all platforms for new music, videos, and social posts, and follow him as he builds his career and catalogue. After The Happening came The Last Airbender, and after The Last Airbender came... After Earth. Will Smith teamed up with M Night Shyamalan to bring his epic father and son tale of survival to life, and the result was career lows for both of their careers. But we're just here to take a second look and determine what the movie did well! The visuals often impress, the set pieces are fun, and that bird is a real bro.Join the Best of the Rest discord: https://discord.gg/86P7jJXNPb Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/user/botrcast Email: bestoftherestpod@gmail.com Social Media @BotRCast on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook Bonus content: Youtube Theme song (vocals) by Mark Benavides: Instagram Music by Mitch: Twitter, SoundCloud Logo by Alex Brinegar: https://beardodoesdesign.com/ Additional artwork by Phillip Chacon, C7Productions: Instagram

More than ten years after its release, Steve and Andre decided to tackle After Earth, taking us back to the time Will Smith and Jaden Smith tried to make a summer blockerbuster helmed by M. Night Shyamalan. Was it unfairly malinged at the time? As it turns out, no, it wasn't! Our disbelief is palpable in this episode, so we hope you enjoy the carnage. The Oscar Grouches are taking a step back from Best Original Screenplay as they celebrate their favorite holiday by watching "After Earth"
We're continuing our run through the films of M. Night Shyamalan (SHYAMALAMARAMA!) with one of "his" worst reviewed films: AFTER EARTH. Originally envisioned by its star Will Smith as a multi-platform, mega franchise launchpad, After Earth strangely failed at nearly every one of its aims, including on set reports that M. Night Shyamalan didn't actually perform most of the director duties. We dissect the film's many missteps and try to engage with what it seemed to be trying to do while having quite a bit of fun in the process. Also featuring a Patron segment discussing episodes 4-6 of the TV show SERVANT, this episode is both briefer and (possibly) way more fun than actually watching After Earth and we hope you enjoy it.5:12 - Business TimePatron Only Segment: SERVANT, Season 2, Episodes 4 - 67:31 - AFTER EARTHSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

After Earth had been mostly laid to waste, major corporations took charge and colonized much of the solar system. Interplanetary trade was the only source of money and therefore power. Earth's few remaining societies still held a fair amount of political influence, but controlling as many of the independent planetary parliaments as possible was probably even more important. If you timed it right and invested your money wisely, you could gain power in the solar system's ultimate authority, the Plutocratic Council. After all, Earth's political systems had been replaced by a Plutocracy by Claudio Bierig from Doppeldenkspiele. Take a trip back to 2012 with us as we talk about Will and Jaden Smith in After Earth a sci-fi adventure that takes us forward into the future of 3071 when the earth is no longer inhabitable. We're not strangers to a film that has been notoriously panned in pop culture, but maybe they got it wrong once again? We're talking about this movie but also, how did this box office 'bomb' affect Will and Jaden's relationship and Will himself? This movie was conceived by Will and brought to life with help from director M. Night Shyamalan. Will this be a true movie theatre regret or a blockbuster fave? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loyaloats/message
Will Smith used to be considered the most charming guy in Hollywood. He launched Blockbuster movies but also did ones where he played the common man. Then he made this piece garbage. He wrote the story and brought this film into the world and it is a giant mess of nutty attitudes and senseless uninspired action scenes. But the most amazing thing he did was maybe give us a peek into who he thinks he is. He plays a charmless monster of a father who forces his kid to overcome obstacles to save his character's life. Never once caring about the kid. And by the end of the movie he has not changed, he still thinks he did this right. It is a terrifying look at how he thinks a family should work. And he also found a way to make this movie phenomenally boring. Good job Will.Hate Watching is the show that opens the wounds and pours in the salt.#WillSmith #freshprinceofbelair #afterEarth #mnightshyamalan What is an artists duty? Probably nothing for the most of us that exist on the outskirts of fame. What is the duty of the artist with Fame? There is no duty but it is a platform that affords the artist a chance to do something good. It is lens that can reveal the good and bad of the world. It is a chance to talk about the human experience to large audience. But in a lot of cases, it is a chance to speak your truth. And in some cases, that truth is terrifying built on aberrant beliefs. Most of us spend our lives carefully curating what we say. But a few people with artistic voices go off and speak their darkest secrets not realizing that the world is happy to tear them down from their throne of fame and throw them in the gutter. What the world gives, it can just as easily take away...

Sean and Bill are back! Like a never-ending game of limbo-how low can they go? Three words: Independence Day Resurgence. Including a brand new segment! What is the name of the new segment? Do you know... because the host doesn't. Discussion Points: -Will Smith didn't return... what a slap in the face for Director Roland Emmerich. -Bill and Sean discuss a film 'that's on a hiding to nothing'. -Sean trots out Bad Reviews (in front of Bill, he's shameless, he really is). -Sean gets surprisingly creative when he can't read out swear words in front of Bill. Random questions: -How many of Bill 'trademark quotes' does Sean rip off? -What the hell is with Sean's three-film Blu-Ray collection? -Where on Earth did the 'Presidential Line of Succession' people come from? Quotes of the episode: "A whole lot of ballooney!" "The logical part of your brain goes oh Jesus no, but the excited part of your brain goes- that would make a great episode!". "Do you want the old characters in it or do you not want them in it? You can't mix and match, this isn't 3 for 2 at Boots, just make your decision and do what you want" "If you take anything away from this review, please do not watch The Mummy (2017), no-one deserves that" "I'm not one for being structured, you might have noticed" I can't watch that film again recommendation: After Earth (2013). M. Night Shyamalan and Will Smith went through a rough patch at one point, this film is a convergence of that. However, many people have overlooked the trends that After Earth may have jump-started.
