Host Jason Blitman sits down with author Daria Lavelle (Aftertaste) to explore the sensory phenomenon of clairgustance, how words possess distinct textures that can be experienced beyond their meanings, and the fascinating etymology of the word "taste." Daria reflects on the delicate balance between happiness and grief and shares her journey discovering the many dimensions of hunger. Jason is then joined by Guest Gay Reader, acclaimed pastry chef Kareem "Mr. Bake" Queeman, who shares what he's been reading as well as what his book would be about should he write one. Daria Lavelle discusses with Ivan six things which should be better known. Daria Lavelle was born in Kyiv, immigrated to the US with her family as a child and now lives in New Jersey with her husband and their three children. She holds a BA from Princeton University and an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College. She writes fiction, with short stories published in a variety of US outlets. Aftertaste is her debut novel. It's already sold into 13 territories with a major motion picture in development. It is available at https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/aftertaste-daria-lavelle/7752339 Putting Salt on Fruit - the easiest way to elevate and bring out the deepest flavors of your food (even out of season)! But one that most people don't think of combining with their fruit dishes. Opera for Fantasy Lovers - Opera is woefully unfashionable among younger people, and most high-fantasy and speculative fiction lovers I know have no interest in this stuffy art form, and yet, some of the most formative and epic and compelling narratives ever presented are operatic in form. The Hoboken, NJ food scene - New York (and Brooklyn, and Queens) get most of the love and accolades for their restaurant offerings, but Hoboken, NJ, is like the best kept secret of Italian-American cuisine and fabulous cocktails. The film What Dreams May Come - this 1998 film is largely forgotten / unknown among anyone under the age of 30, but it's worth revisiting as one of the most interesting and beautiful explorations of death, grief, love, and the Afterlife. Family Recipes - this is perhaps an imperative to listeners to take the time to learn their family recipes from their older generations. Finding Your Tribe - I'd love to talk about several ways this has been true in my life, from writing cohorts to mom groups with my kids, to the debut groups I'm part of this year as I move toward publication. If you could have one last meal with someone you lost, what would it be? Michaela talks with Daria Lavelle, author of Aftertaste, about her debut novel. They discuss closure, the psychic ability of clairgustance or “clear tasting”, and how food is a conduit for connection both in the physical world and beyond. Sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn , Reynolds Landscaping & Lawncare, Everest Counseling (Farmington, Mo)Helmet, the iconic alternative metal band that emerged from New York City in the late 1980s, stands as a testament to the power of artistic innovation within the realm of heavy music. Founded by frontman and guitarist Page Hamilton, Helmet has left an indelible mark on the landscape of rock and metal with their unique blend of raw aggression, intricate songwriting, and thought-provoking lyrics. The band's journey began in 1989 when they released their debut album, "Strap It On," on the independent label Amphetamine Reptile Records. This album, marked by its deceptively simple yet highly effective riffing, immediately caught the attention of fans and critics alike. Page Hamilton's fractured soloing style and distinct vocal delivery set Helmet apart from the burgeoning alternative music scene, where they stood as a harbinger of a new era in heavy music.Helmet's breakthrough came with their second album, "Meantime," released in 1992 on Interscope Records. This album showcased Hamilton's songwriting prowess and cemented the band's status as a heavy-hitting force in the industry. Tracks like "Unsung" and "In the Meantime" became anthems for a generation, and the album itself achieved Gold certification, signifying its enduring impact. What sets Helmet apart from many of their peers is their dedication to musical intricacy and innovation. Page Hamilton, a trained jazz guitarist with a background in avant-garde music, brought a level of sophistication to their heavy sound that was unparalleled. The band's use of drop-D tuning, unconventional time signatures, and dissonant chords created a sonic landscape that challenged the conventions of heavy music. Songs like "Wilma's Rainbow" and "Rollo" exemplify this complexity, offering listeners a glimpse into the band's commitment to pushing the boundaries of their genre. After releasing two more albums, "Betty" in 1994 and "Aftertaste" in 1997, the original lineup of Helmet disbanded in 1998. However, Page Hamilton's artistic journey was far from over. He continued to explore various musical avenues, collaborating with artists like David Bowie, Caspar Brötzmann, and Wire, among others. This period of exploration allowed him to expand his sonic palette and further solidify his status as a musical innovator. In 2004, Hamilton reformed Helmet with an all-new lineup, releasing several albums, including "Size Matters" (2004), "Monochrome" (2006), "Seeing Eye Dog" (2010), and "Dead To The World" (2016). These albums demonstrated that Helmet's spirit of innovation and uncompromising intensity remained intact, even with a new lineup. In 2023, Helmet announced the release of their ninth studio album, "Left," set to be released on November 10th on earMUSIC. This announcement was accompanied by the "Look Left Tour," taking the band through various regions of North America. It marked their first tour since the pandemic, and fans eagerly anticipated hearing new material from this legendary band.Helmet's journey through the realms of heavy music and artistic innovation has been nothing short of remarkable. Page Hamilton's unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging conventions has led to the creation of music that transcends genres and continues to captivate audiences. Helmet's legacy as pioneers of alternative metal is secure, and their enduring influence on heavy music is a testament to the enduring power of artistic innovation. All equipment used in the making of this video:Shure Sm7b https://amzn.to/3uAMzMAShure Sm58 https://amzn.to/3xlAj4pBoom Arm Desktop Mic Stand https://amzn.to/3rlZtvGMixcast 4 Audio Mixer https:/This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

After going through the entire Batman retrospective, the boys were looking for a different kind of retro for a follow-up. With no Scorsese and only a few DiCaprio films in their resume from the Aftertaste years, it was decided that their next venture would be the film team-ups of Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. Much like the boys were at the end of last year, the careers of Scorsese and DiCaprio were at a crossroads in the early 2000s. The veteran director was in dire need of a hit, and the superstar actor was trying hard to shed the sheen of Titanic and move on with his career. So, Scorsese dusted off a script he had been working on called Gangs of New York, and the Weinsteins were happy to finance it, as long as DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz were cast. But were those the only compromises the director needed to make? Join Garrett, Matt, and the returning (Jeopardy contestant) Michael Guarnieri as they start their look at the five films in this retrospective, and answer the question of whether Gangs of New York was worth Scorsese's nearly 30 year wait to get it made.
“First I drink, then I smoke…” Everyone already knows that when you mix heavy blues, rock, and jazz, the result is Black Sabbath. Now, if you mix some Sabbath with a hardcore foundation, a liberal splash of misanthropic loathing for fake people, and a generous portion of brutal grooves seasoned with discordant jazz noises, the result is HELMET. HELMET'S fourth outing, AFTERTASTE, is a sonic collection of laser focused apathy seething out of every track due to the manufactured “swath” of counterfeit people on this planet that are ultimately responsible for inspiring the bristling lyrical & musical ire of Page Hamilton. Get your “sandwich boards” ready and learn how to “maximize your workout routine” to eliminate any surrounding “butthole smoke” that may linger before the commencement of any overly whispery ASMR Battles. Gear up for the “boycott “and JOIN US as we go back to The Days of Yore from 1997 and consume the sublime venom of HELMET's AFTERTASTE. Myf and Zan are back and absolutely champing at the bit to bang on this week. Which is a perfect horse reference for Beyoncé's Renaissance album (see: cover art). We go in deep on all facets of this instant club classic, and some of the backlash it's received. We also dip into a larger discussion around releasing, then changing an album. Is an album, as a “finished” piece of art, much more malleable in the digital age? The finale of Neighbours had us in absolute tears, and we debrief on all our favourite moments and just why Kylie and Jason had so few lines. And a fascinating piece on the “ick” and how it can end a relationship has us in stitches. Meanwhile it's a big foodie bang on, with Myf watching Aftertaste and Zan reading Jess Ho's memoir Raised By Wolves.
