In this episode, I'm joined by one of my favourite Australian actors, Natalie Abbott, who gives an inspiring performance in The Deb. I think everyone will find something they can relate to with her character Tayla considering the depth and complexities of the character. Also, anyone who's a fan of musicals in general are going to adore this film. There's so much to love about The Deb, and Natalie's performance here really brings the film to life. The Deb is a larger-than-life musical comedy directed by Rebel Wilson. The film follows Natalie Abbott's Taylah, a high school outcast in a rural town who sees the local debutante ball as her chance to shine. When her cynical, inner-city cousin Maeve (played by Charlotte MacInnes) is sent to live with her, the two clash but eventually unite, searching for self-acceptance, popularity, and a date to the ball Natalie is a performer who made her professional debut playing Muriel Heslop in Muriel's Wedding The Musical in 2019. The role saw Natalie nominated for a Helpmann Award and a Green Room Award. In 2020, Natalie made her television debut staring in the ABC series Aftertaste, playing opposite Erik Thomson and Rachel Griffiths, reprising her role in 2021 for season 2. Stick around at the end of this interview to find out about the future of Aftertaste if you're keen. Natalie can be seen most recently in the ABC' hit series, Austin S2. This is a much shorter episode than usual. As regular listeners know, I like to go much deeper with my Podcast interviews, but this one was recorded as part of a press junket for the film, and time is always limited with these things. Anyway... enjoy.
I can remember a number of truly incredible meals in my life, whether cooked for me at home or in restaurants locally or while traveling. Some of the food stands out in my mind: a perfectly-cooked piece of meat, a well-crafted cocktail, a side dish that pairs perfectly with the entree, a dessert that caps off the wonderful meal. But in all those epicurean events, what I recall most are the people with me around the table, loved ones sharing a gustatory experience always seems more important than the food itself.

Our guest this week, Daria Lavelle, has written a novel titled Aftertaste that asks what would happen if you could summon ghosts with food. This isn't a horror novel, so these ghosts aren't here to haunt us in the traditional sense. But the main character, Kostya, is a chef who helps his clients find closure from their loss and grief through food memories. Lavelle's novel is super unique, and she talks to us about her own Ukrainian-American family's passion for food, how Covid and Russia's war on Ukraine heavily affected its writing, and how love becomes the crux of all the book's momentum. Our book rec segment of the show features women in STEM doing all kinds of cool sciency, techny, engineery, and mathy things. We've got women doing research in the Amazon and under the sea, women physicists, young girls learning botany, Regency period women studying fossils, and female scientists who bring back a woolly mammoth. Tap here to send us a message! Following God does not exempt us from hardship, for even as He led Israel, He brought them to the bitter waters of Marah with divine purpose. We must choose to leave sin behind and apply the power of the blood to our lives, understanding that bitterness can become a place of transformation rather than defeat. The Sweet Aftertaste of Bitter Waters reminds us that though the journey may bring trials, God is working all things together for good and will bring sweetness out of what once seemed bitter.03/22/2026 - Sunday Afternoon Scriptures:Exodus 15:22-27Ruth 1:19-20I Corinthians 10:1-2Exodus 15:26I Corinthians 10:13Exodus 15:27Ruth 1:20

We're back from a November–December hiatus and kicking off the new year with a cozy (and slightly chaotic) reading reset. In this episode of Reeding Between the Lines, we look back on their 2025 reading, compare notes on buzzy picks vs. surprise favorites, and do the most 2026 thing imaginable: ask ChatGPT what our book choices say about us.Nicole shares her 2025 highlights, including three widely-loved “BookTok/BookTube” titles—The Correspondent (Virginia Evans), Broken Country (Claire Leslie Hall), and What Kind of Paradise (Janelle Brown)—plus three lesser-known 5-star backlist gems: Someone at a Distance (Dorothy Whipple), The Caretaker (Ron Rash), and Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont (Elizabeth Taylor). She also reveals her stats (a casual 136 books in 2025), how she uses “palate cleanser” romances, and what she's aiming for in 2026 (more audiobooks, more intentional TBR reading, and donating/unhauling over 100 books).Sara shares her own 2025 buzzy reads (including a couple hard “no's”), highlights a standout cozy fantasy—A Teller of Small Fortunes (Julie Leong). Nicole also convinces Sara to preorder a March release on the spot: Lady Tremaine, a Cinderella retelling from the stepmother's POV.Plus: a full-on book journaling segment, including Nicole's Archer & Olive journal setup, seasonal TBRs, monthly favorites, a “DNF graveyard,” sticker systems, and why journaling counts as reading-adjacent joy (because we support hobbies that require glue).Books mentioned for winter reading include The Ghostwriter (Julie Clark), The Frozen People (Elly Griffiths), and The Land in Winter (Andrew Miller), plus a food-and-memory pairing featuring The Kamogawa Food Detectives and a similar-premise pick, Aftertaste. If you've ever wondered what your reading habits say about you—or you just want permission to be both “deep” and “trash goblin” in the same month—this episode is for you.Question for you: If you asked ChatGPT to analyze your reading taste, what do you hope it would say?

In Aftertaste (Simon & Schuster, 2025) Konstantin Duhovny's father died when he was young, and his mother is too anguished to raise him, so he raises himself, but not very well. After a sad breakup, he advertises for a roommate and finds a chef who becomes his best friend. Kostya starts to realize that although he doesn't see ghosts, he can taste the food they once loved. He figures out how to prepare special dishes that unite people with their dead loved ones, and in hopes of helping people, decides to really learn how to cook. But he falls in love with someone who has an inkling about the afterlife and she wants to stop him from feeding ghosts. This is a beautiful but crazy novel about New York's food scene, the most esoteric and expensive foods, ghosts, finding a soulmate, and losing one's soul. Daria Lavelle is a speculative fiction writer. Her short stories have appeared in The Deadlands, Dread Machine, Dark Matters, and elsewhere, and her debut novel, Aftertaste, was published by Simon & Schuster (US) and Bloomsbury (UK) in 2025, and is currently being translated into thirteen languages. Born in Kyiv, Ukraine, and raised in the New York metro area, she holds degrees in writing from Princeton University and Sarah Lawrence College. She lives in New Jersey with her family, and can often be found in a coffee shop, inventing new worlds or distorting this one. When she's not writing, she enjoys opera, One Night Ultimate Werewolf, and Escape Rooms. Learn more about your ad choices. Karim Ellis is the keynote speaker at the AICPA Governmental and Not-for-Profit Conference in October in Las Vegas. The early-bird registration deadline for the event is Friday. For Ellis, the qualities of a strong speaker are similar to the ones needed in a strong leader: empathy, preparedness, adaptability, and excellent storytelling skills. In this conversation, Ellis shares how he prepares for speaking, some of the rookie mistakes he made decades ago, and why the experience of taking some foul-tasting cough syrup has stuck with him. What you'll learn from this episode: · The meaning for Ellis of the phrase “iron sharpens iron; rust sharpens rust.” · Why a speaker's preparation is like baking a cake. · How Ellis adapts if he senses his message is failing to resonate with an audience. · An example from his childhood that illustrates the power of good storytelling. · His advice for conference attendees' choice of seats for his session.
In her dazzling debut novel Aftertaste, Daria Lavelle takes us on a sensory journey where food, grief, & romance intertwine in this inventive ghost story. What if you could taste the ghosts of the people you've lost? In this intimate conversation, Daria shares how her Ukrainian heritage, her childhood food memories, and her love of genre-bending storytelling all shaped one of the most unique novels of the year. You'll love the reveals of how this story took on surprising symbolism, the genre challenges of marketing such a unique book, and the reader stories that have stayed with her long after her tour ended.
Clairgustance is the psychic ability to perceive tastes or flavours through extrasensory perception, rather than mere eating. It's at the core of Ukraine-born, American author Daria Lavelle's Aftertaste, part ghost story, part gastro romance, it's an investigation of food: what we like to eat, who it reminds us of and who it connects us to. Daria speaks to Susie about her odyssey through food and love, life and death.
Ari Fliakos's exceptional performance of haunted Kostya Duhovny is among the many pleasures of this immersive debut, says AudioFile's Alan Minskoff. In discussion with Host Jo Reed, they delve into Kostya's supernatural ability to bring back the dead through food. Fliakos is ably aided by Tessa Albertson, André Santana, and Kristen Sieh, who all do fine work. But it's Fliakos's tour-de-force narration that elevates this listening experience. Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris try their darndest to recap the over 12 hours of trailers presented in the various summer showcases that hit this past week, from the Horror Game Awards Summer Showcase to a surprisingly outstanding State of Play, Summer Games Fest, and more. Did they lose their minds wading through these things? Were the likes of Scott Pilgrim, Ninja Gaiden Ragebound, Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection, and Metal Gear Solid Delta enough to drive them truly mad? Then, in Week Old News, well, there was no Week Old Mews. It was just all these showcases! Finally, in The Checkpoint, Kris got the Switch 2! He recaps his experience getting it at the midnight launch, how the setup went, and how late he was up messing around with it on Day 1. Plus, Welcome Tour and Mario Kart World impressions, the joys of backward compatibility, Link's Awakening at a steady framerate, and more! Enjoy! Daria Lavelle discusses with Ivan six things which should be better known. Daria Lavelle was born in Kyiv, immigrated to the US with her family as a child and now lives in New Jersey with her husband and their three children. She holds a BA from Princeton University and an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College. She writes fiction, with short stories published in a variety of US outlets. Aftertaste is her debut novel. It's already sold into 13 territories with a major motion picture in development. It is available at https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/aftertaste-daria-lavelle/7752339 Putting Salt on Fruit - the easiest way to elevate and bring out the deepest flavors of your food (even out of season)! But one that most people don't think of combining with their fruit dishes. Opera for Fantasy Lovers - Opera is woefully unfashionable among younger people, and most high-fantasy and speculative fiction lovers I know have no interest in this stuffy art form, and yet, some of the most formative and epic and compelling narratives ever presented are operatic in form. The Hoboken, NJ food scene - New York (and Brooklyn, and Queens) get most of the love and accolades for their restaurant offerings, but Hoboken, NJ, is like the best kept secret of Italian-American cuisine and fabulous cocktails. The film What Dreams May Come - this 1998 film is largely forgotten / unknown among anyone under the age of 30, but it's worth revisiting as one of the most interesting and beautiful explorations of death, grief, love, and the Afterlife. Family Recipes - this is perhaps an imperative to listeners to take the time to learn their family recipes from their older generations. Finding Your Tribe - I'd love to talk about several ways this has been true in my life, from writing cohorts to mom groups with my kids, to the debut groups I'm part of this year as I move toward publication. Dive into Jennifer Nerio's latest work, Aftertaste, where she masterfully blends humor and introspection to explore the impermanence of memory and life itself. Through playful imagery like melting popsicles and vanitas-inspired portraits, Nerio invites us to reflect on fleeting moments and familial legacy with a mix of levity and depth. Her participation in The Bureau of Queer Art's residency has pushed her work into more personal and existential territory, making Aftertaste one of her most intimate and thought-provoking pieces yet. We are building for an amazing 2025 with: • Foto(grafia) 2025 in CDMX and San Diego, CA. with Studio Door - sponsored by Secretary of Culture CDMX/Benito Juarez • Art Week CDMX, February 5-9, at the Centro Cultural Juan Rulfo & Clavo Movimiento. • World Pride in Washington, D.C.Maryland Art Place in Baltimore, MD, this September. • Closing the year in November with a special exhibition from our online residency program, THE INCUBATOR. Let your art speak the truth that history may overlook. Let it be our declaration, our resilience, our reclamation. Reduced App fees to $12.50 USD!
