School starts for kids in Baltimore and beyond in just a couple of weeks, and when it does, more than 500 school food service workers will tend to the nutritional needs of those kids. School food encompasses much, much more than just lunch. Many kids rely on schools not just for lunch, but for breakfast, supper, and snacks as well. The National School Lunch Program, begun in the 1940s, is the largest food assistance program in the U.S. after SNAP. We begin today on Midday with a celebration of the people who do the important work of feeding our children so they are able to learn and grow. The two school nutrition workers who join Tom in Studio A are also featured in an exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Industry called Food for Thought. Gail Pendelton has been a Food Service Manager with Baltimore City Public Schools for 35 years…Jami Washington is a Traveling Food Services Manager in NE Baltimore, with 24 years of experience. Also joining us is Michael J. Wilson, the director of Maryland Hunger Solutions, a not-for-profit advocacy organization working to end hunger for low-income families in Maryland. Over the past eleven months, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken the lives of more than 353 thousand Americans and upended the economic livelihood of millions more.  The number of Americans who struggle each week to put food on their tables has climbed to nearly one in 8 – an estimated 26 million people, according to the Census Bureau.  Even before the pandemic, more than a quarter of a million people in Maryland faced chronic food insecurity. Tom's first guests today are on the front lines of the battle against hunger in our state.  Michael J. Wilson is the director of Maryland Hunger Solutions, an initiative of the non-profit Food Research and Action Center. (FRAC).  Carmen Del Guercio is president and CEO of the Maryland Food Bank, a non-profit organization that’s been providing food assistance to people in need for the past 40 years.   Carmen Del Guercio and Michael Wilson join Tom on Zoom. Join us for a talk by Michael J. Wilson in honor of National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, September 22. The right to vote has been a continuing journey of expanding civic rights. In the beginning, the only people who could vote were white male land-owners (even in Maryland you had to own at least fifty acres of land). This journey has been led by movements (women’s suffrage, civil rights, labor unions, etc.) by political parties (Democratic, Republican, and independent parties like the Communists, Socialists and Greens) and often by candidates. At times, the government itself has led efforts for enfranchising voters. In Michael J. Wilson's collection, he has focused on the movements, parties, and government--not on candidates. The reasons why people register and vote has been as wide-ranging as anti-smoking to tenants’ rights to marriage equality. It’s about using pop art, fine art, and celebrities. The history of voting rights in United States is also the story of growing diversity, inclusion, and democratizing political power. Join us for a conversation about this history. A member of the American Political Items Collectors, Michael J. Wilson has participated in voter registration campaigns for Planned Parenthood, the NAACP and the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and led registration and get-out-vote campaigns in many states, including Florida, New Hampshire, and Michigan. He is a registered voter in Baltimore City. Recorded On: Monday, September 21, 2020

We begin today with a conversation about hunger in Maryland. Elliot Jaspin is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has written a multipart series for the great website, Maryland Matters, about the scope of the problem, which persists not just in poor neighborhoods in Baltimore City, but in places like Anne Arundel County. Jaspin points out that Anne Arundel is one of the richest counties in our state, which is itself the richest state in the country. Yet the number of children in Anne Arundel County who are eligible for a free school lunch has skyrocketed in the last 10 years, up 81%. Jaspin looked into why that is, and the result is a revelatory and assiduously reported series, which you can read here. Elliot Jaspin joins Tom in Studio A. Also joining us is Michael J. Wilson, the director of Maryland Hunger Solutions, an organization advocating in the General Assembly for a number of bills around the issue of hunger.
