There was a time, not so long ago, when the fate of the planet hinged on the stern glare of a Scandinavian teenager.World leaders trembled. Journalists genuflected. Schoolchildren skipped algebra to chant in the streets. And at the center of this eco-theatrical hurricane stood Greta Thunberg, who, despite not yet being old enough to rent a car, was apparently qualified to repossess Western civilization. She was the Left's Joan of Arc, except instead of hearing voices she heard carbon emissions. Every time someone started a lawnmower, somewhere a cable news producer lit a candle in her honor. Politicians who could not balance a municipal budget suddenly discovered they could forecast global temperatures in the year 2087. And corporations, terrified of being labeled climate criminals, lined up to sponsor the apocalypse. And then, almost imperceptibly at first, the roar quieted.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Stephen Shames: A Lifetime in Photography – Lessons on Social Documentary, the Black Panthers, and Child Poverty (Part 1) Introduction In the latest episode of “10 Frames per Second,” host Molly & Joe interview legendary American photojournalist Stephen Shames. Over a 50‑year career, Shames has documented everything from the Black Panther Party to child poverty in America, testifying before the U.S. Senate and publishing twelve monographs. If you're a photographer, journalist, activist, or anyone who cares about visual storytelling, this interview is a goldmine. Below we break down the most actionable takeaways, organize them into easy‑to‑read sections, and show you how to apply Shames's methods to your own work. Who Is Stephen Shames? Fact Detail Profession Photojournalist & documentary photographer Career span 50+ years (1960s‑present) Focus Social issues – child poverty, racism, civil rights Notable achievements Testified before the U.S. Senate (1986), 42 museum collections, 12 monographs (e.g., Power to the People, Outside the Dream), new book Stephen Shames – A Lifetime in Photography – Purchase Directly with Autograph and Print from Stephen via eBay HERE Key collaborations Black Panther leader Bobby Seale, New York Times reporter Earl Caldwell, various grassroots organizations How Stephen Shames Discovered Photography College activism – While studying at UC Berkeley during the 1960s, he witnessed the civil‑rights movement and anti‑Vietnam protests. First camera purchase – After hitch‑hiking to New York's East Village, he bought a camera at a pawn shop. Choosing the “artist of the movement” – Frustrated by student‑government politics, he decided to capture the larger picture rather than be a “politician.” “I just wanted to look at the big picture and try and move people with photography.” Working with the Black Panther Party Why the Panthers Accepted a White Photographer Shared goals – Economic and social justice, not just race. Pragmatism – Panthers needed allies outside the Black community to build coalitions (Peace & Freedom Party, Young Lords, Young Patriots). Personal connection – Bobby Seale liked Shames's images and invited him to use them in the Panther newspaper. Key Facts About the Panthers (From the Interview) Founded: October 1966 (initially ~20 members). National expansion: Post‑1968, 10,000+ members, 50‑60 chapters. Community programs: “Breakfast for School Children,” feeding 10,000+ kids daily. Self‑defense model: Legal gun ownership (California) + law books; later, they shifted to “cameras are better weapons.” Lesson for Photographers Build trust by aligning with a group's mission, not merely your identity. Stephen Shames Research‑First Approach “Journalism is two‑dimensional; you need to experience the culture you want to document.” Steps to Deep‑Dive Research Read nonfiction – History, journalism, policy reports. Read fiction – Novels written by members of the community. Listen to music – Understand emotional tone and cultural references. Watch movies / documentaries – Visual language and storytelling cues. Live the bubble – Immerse yourself in daily life, food, rituals. Why It Matters Breaks the “bubble” of your own biases. Helps anticipate reactions and capture authentic moments. Stephen Shames on Building Trust & Relationships Core Principles Honesty: Be transparent about your intent. Respect: Never mock or look down on subjects (e.g., drug addicts, police). Reciprocity: Offer subjects control—let them tell you when to stop. Presence: Stay physically in the community (sleep on sofas, eat meals together). Practical Tactics Find a community “gatekeeper.” Example: a nun from Catholic Social Services who introduced Shames to Chicago projects. Sit down for a conversation before shooting – explain the project, listen to concerns. Share your work later (photos, stories) to reinforce the relationship. “If you're honest, people will accept you, even if you're a ‘liberal New York Jew.'” Bullet‑Point Checklist Identify and contact a respected local figure or organization. Explain your project in plain language. Offer a clear “opt‑out” for subjects. Spend time off‑camera – meals, conversations, errands. Follow up after the shoot with thank‑you notes or shared images. Cameras vs. Guns: The Evolution of “Weapons” 1960s‑70s: Panthers used firearms legally to patrol police. Today: Shames notes that cameras and smartphones are the most powerful weapons for exposing injustice. Why the shift? Legal restrictions on open carry. Instant global distribution of visual evidence. “The camera is a much better weapon because it puts the story directly in front of the world.” Lessons for Modern Photographers Insight How to Apply Research beyond headlines Read novels, watch local films, listen to playlists from the community. Immerse, don't observe from a distance Stay in the neighborhood for days or weeks, not just a single shoot. Earn trust through honesty Share your intent, give subjects a “stop” word, and be transparent about usage. Leverage community allies Partner with NGOs, churches, or trusted locals to gain entry. Think of yourself as a “doctor,” not a “tourist” Your presence should be accepted as part of the environment, not an intrusion. Use the camera as an activist tool Publish work on platforms that reach decision‑makers, not just art galleries. Document, don't dictate Let subjects tell their own story; avoid imposing your narrative. Why Shames's Story Matters Today Media fragmentation & AI‑generated images: Shames emphasizes that authentic, verified photography is more vital than ever. Social justice resurgence: The same patterns of protest, police scrutiny, and grassroots organizing repeat across generations. Educational relevance: Teachers can use Shames's methods to teach research, empathy, and ethical storytelling. Conclusion Stephen Shames's career shows that powerful photography comes from empathy, rigorous research, and deep community ties. Whether you're documenting the modern Black Lives Matter movement, child poverty, or any social issue, the principles he shares—exit your bubble, build trust, and let the camera speak—remain timeless. Ready to start your own documentary project? Apply the checklist above, stay authentic, and remember: your camera can change policy just as much as any courtroom testimony. The Washington Roundtable is joined by the journalist and historian Garrett Graff to trace how post-9/11 immigration policy, which led to a surge in Border Patrol hiring, set the stage for today's crisis in Minneapolis. The panel examines how ICE and C.B.P., created to protect Americans from outside threats, have been unleashed in America's cities as what Graff calls "a fascist secret police." “The Border Patrol has never been intended to be a force that is routinely interacting with American citizens,” Graff says. “Full stop, period, let alone routinely patrolling American cities.”This week's reading: “Operation Trump Rehab,” by Susan B. GBI arrests Braselton police chief on stalking charge Scarlett Rigsby’s nonprofit quietly battles weekend hunger for Gwinnett schoolchildren Mountain View naming recognition wall for former coach killed in Apalachee shooting All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Kia Mall of GA STORY 1: GBI arrests Braselton police chief on stalking charge Braselton Police Chief Michael Steffman is out of a job—and facing serious charges. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested the 49-year-old on allegations of stalking, harassment, and misconduct, including misuse of license plate readers. According to the GBI, Steffman used the automated systems to stalk and harass multiple people. He’s now charged with stalking, harassing communications, violating his oath, and several counts of misusing the plate recognition system. Steffman resigned and retired after his arrest, though the city called it “personal reasons.” This comes just seven months after he was sworn in as permanent chief, following 20 years with the department. Braselton has named Zack Tiller as interim chief while the case moves forward. The GBI is asking anyone with information to contact their Athens office or submit tips anonymously online. STORY 2: Scarlett Rigsby’s nonprofit quietly battles weekend hunger for Gwinnett schoolchildren After nearly 20 years at the Gwinnett YMCA, Scarlett Rigsby’s job disappeared during the 2008 economic crash. She thought her next step would be another nonprofit—her work felt like a calling, a ministry. But starting her own? That wasn’t on the radar. Yet in 2010, with her Golden Retriever, Truth, by her side, she launched Nothing but the Truth in Lawrenceville. What began with feeding 15 kids at one school has grown into a lifeline for nearly 1,300 students across 50 schools, sending weekend food home in backpacks. “People used to say, ‘There aren’t hungry kids in Gwinnett.’ But there are,” Rigsby said. The nonprofit’s reach has expanded—reading programs, English classes, even “swag bags” for girls without period supplies. “It’s about meeting people where they are,” she said. Fifteen years in, Rigsby dreams of the next generation taking over. STORY 3: Mountain View naming recognition wall for former coach killed in Apalachee shooting One of the four victims of the tragic Apalachee High School shooting will soon be honored with a permanent memorial at the Gwinnett County school where he spent a decade teaching and coaching. The Gwinnett County Board of Education voted to name Mountain View High School’s track recognition wall after Ricky Aspinwall—known to students as “Coach A.” Aspinwall, who taught math and coached football and track, was killed in the September 2024 shooting in Barrow County. “Coach A left a legacy of integrity, service, and compassion,” wrote Mountain View School Council President Gail Devers. “Our community was deeply impacted by his loss.” The wall, which will display track records, will be a visible tribute during school events. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets STORY 4: Man convicted of killing woman on Stone Mountain Highway A Stone Mountain man will spend the rest of his life in prison for the brutal murder of Breana Marie Rogers, a 33-year-old woman who had been living with him at a south Gwinnett hotel. Edward Rodley Smith Jr., 39, was convicted of malice murder and sentenced to life without parole for the October 2022 killing. “Breana tried to escape, and he hunted her down,” said Gwinnett DA Patsy Austin-Gatson. “We hope this verdict brings her family some measure of justice.” Rogers was shot four times—three in the back, once in the head—after fleeing their hotel. Witnesses reported hearing her yell, “I’m tired of this,” before Smith chased her down. Smith claimed self-defense, but the jury didn’t buy it, deliberating just 90 minutes before convicting him. STORY 5: Lawmakers consider ways to reduce chronic absenteeism Georgia students skipping too much school might soon face some tough consequences—like losing their driver’s licenses or getting benched from sports teams. That’s one of several ideas floated by a legislative study committee tackling the state’s growing absenteeism problem, which has only worsened since COVID. “It’s about the kids, but it’s also about Georgia’s economy and workforce,” said Sen. John F. Kennedy, who chaired the committee. The group’s recommendations include harsher penalties for chronic absences, but also more support for struggling families—like providing hygiene products, clothing, and even washing machines. One nonprofit leader shared heartbreaking stories: kids skipping school because they’re embarrassed by dirty clothes or the smell of bed-wetting siblings. Lawmakers also discussed banning cellphones in high schools and expanding mental health services, though the $34 million price tag for elementary school programs left some stunned. Break 3: BUFORD HOLIDAY FESTIVAL STORY 6: 'Merry Mighty Mo and More!' returns to Fox Theatre Few holiday traditions in Atlanta feel as timeless as a Christmas sing-along with the Fox Theatre’s Mighty Mo—the second-largest theater organ in the country and a true piece of history. This year, the free *Merry Mighty Mo and More!* returns on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m., bringing festive cheer while celebrating the Fox’s opening day—Christmas 1929. Want to make it extra special? Snag access to the Marquee Club, where you’ll find pre-show bites, private restrooms, premium drinks, and even a visit from the Coca-Cola Polar Bear. The night includes sing-alongs led by organist Ken Double, photos with Santa, a performance by Like The Dickens, and a screening of *Olaf’s Frozen Adventure.* Guests are encouraged to “Bring Your Socks to the Fox” to support City of Refuge, an organization helping Atlanta families with housing, job training, and more. For details, visit foxtheatre.org. STORY 7: Legislation would expedite building approvals amid soaring home costs As housing costs keep climbing, builders are fed up with delays and red tape. Their solution? A push for stricter limits on how local governments handle construction permits. House Bill 812 would set hard deadlines for issuing permits—no more clock resets during plan reviews—and give the state power to block local building rules that go beyond Georgia’s minimum standards. But local officials aren’t buying it. They argue the real problem is sloppy, incomplete plans from developers. Environmentalists also raised alarms, warning that rushed approvals could lead to more pollution and poorly regulated construction. One called the proposed deadlines “crazy low.” Meanwhile, builders say the current system is broken, with one even complaining about mosquito prevention reviews. It’s a messy debate, and the stakes are high. Trump revives the Presidential Fitness Test, a rite of passage for schoolchildren for decades

President Donald Trump reestablished the Presidential Fitness Test for American children, a fixture of public schools for decades that gauged young people's health and athleticism with 1-mile runs, sit-ups and stretching exercises. “This is a wonderful tradition, and we're bringing it back,” Trump said of the fitness test that began in 1966 but was phased out during the Obama administration. An executive order he signed in August also reinvigorates a national sports council that the president stocked with former and current athletes and other figures from the sports world. Several prominent athletes joined Trump and top administration officials. In the test, children had to run and perform sit-ups, pull-ups or push-ups, and a sit-and-reach test, but the program changed in 2012. It evolved into the Youth Fitness Program, which the government said “moved away from recognizing athletic performance to providing a barometer on students' health.” The then-first lady Michelle Obama also promoted her “Let's Move” initiative, focused on reducing childhood obesity through diet and exercise. The Youth Fitness Test, according to a Health and Human Services Department website last updated in 2023, “minimizes comparisons between children and instead supports students as they pursue personal fitness goals for lifelong health.” The return of the exam brought mixed reactions from some who study exercise. Trump is putting a welcome focus on physical activity, but a test alone won't make America's children healthier, said Laura Richardson, a kinesiology professor at the University of Michigan. The exam is only a starting point that should be paired with lessons to help all students improve, she said. “It's not just, you get a score and you're doomed,” said Richardson, whose teaching focuses on obesity. “But you get a score, and we can figure out a program that really helps the improvement.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

They highlight the wave of firings at the CDC, HHS, and FDA, calling it long-overdue house cleaning as pharma shills lose their grip on public health. The hosts then turn to the growing battle over school vaccine mandates, with Democrat-led states like California, Oregon, and Washington forming alliances to push their own requirements while Florida leads red states in banning them outright. They also connect RFK's history fighting Monsanto to today's GMO seed monopolies and nutrient-depleted food, tying it all back to America's chronic disease crisis. With humor, sharp commentary, and sponsor shoutouts, this episode captures the seismic shifts in health, politics, and personal freedom.

As the primary school year drew to a close, Equinix, the world's digital infrastructure company, hosted 4th class students from Scoil Ghráinne CNS in Phibblestown for a behind-the-scenes tour of Equinix's DB3 data centre in Dublin. Seventeen students, along with their teachers, met senior Equinix leaders to learn how data centres work and the impact that they have on the students' daily lives. The education day gave the children the opportunity to walk inside the 'physical internet' and discover its far-reaching impact on their own lives, businesses, healthcare and more. The class also learned about Equinix's commitment to net zero and biodiversity. Among the initiatives discussed was Equinix's participation in Digital Infrastructure Ireland's Orchards in the Community project, which plants orchards for schools and other community organisations to encourage pollination. The children also learned about Equinix's onsite beehives and bee habitats. During the visit, the class worked in teams to design collages based on what they imagined the physical internet looks like. Later, Equinix team members took the schoolchildren and their teachers into the heart of the DB3 data centre for an exclusive tour. Warren Delaney, Ireland Operations Director, Equinix, said: "At Equinix, we are committed to educating the communities around us about our role. For these young people, it is eye-opening to walk inside a data centre and imagine the parts of their daily lives that our industry makes possible. For some, it may even spark an interest in a career in technology. Having started my own career as an apprentice electrician, I know that there are many options and pathways into this industry via our apprenticeship and internship programmes in Ireland. It was fantastic to observe the students so engaged and eager to learn." See more stories here. In this case, the court considered this issue: Do the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Rehabilitation Act of 1973 require children with disabilities to satisfy a “bad faith or gross misjudgment” standard when seeking relief for discrimination relating to their education? The case was decided on June 12, 2025.The Supreme Court held that Schoolchildren bringing claims related to their education under either Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act are not required to make a heightened showing of “bad faith or gross misjudgment” but instead are subject to the same standards that apply in other disability discrimination contexts. Chief Justice John Roberts authored the unanimous opinion of the Court. When the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was amended in 1986, Congress explicitly declared that nothing in the IDEA “shall be construed to restrict or limit the rights, procedures, and remedies available under” the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Rehabilitation Act, or other federal laws protecting disabled children's rights. This provision directly repudiates judicial attempts to create special barriers for educational discrimination claims. The Eighth Circuit's rule requiring schoolchildren to prove “bad faith or gross misjudgment”—rather than the standard deliberate indifference required in other disability contexts—artificially limits disabled students' ability to vindicate their rights under the ADA and Rehabilitation Act. Neither statute's text suggests that educational services claims deserve different treatment than other disability discrimination claims. Both laws use expansive language applying protections to “any person” alleging discrimination, without distinction based on the type of claim. The heightened standard originated in 1982 when the Eighth Circuit attempted to “harmonize” the IDEA with the Rehabilitation Act, reasoning that courts should defer to educators unless they departed grossly from professional standards. This Court made a similar harmonization attempt in 1984, holding the IDEA was the exclusive remedy for educational claims, but Congress swiftly overturned that decision. The Eighth Circuit's continued application of its heightened standard conflicts with Congress's clear directive that the IDEA does not limit other federal antidiscrimination laws. By imposing a higher burden of proof for educational claims compared to other disability discrimination contexts, courts effectively read the IDEA as restricting the independent rights and remedies that Title II and Section 504 provide to disabled children.Justice Clarence Thomas authored a concurring opinion, joined by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, suggesting the Court should consider in a future case whether intent to discriminate must be proven for all ADA and Rehabilitation Act claims, not just educational ones.Justice Sonia Sotomayor authored a concurring opinion, joined by Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, emphasizing that the ADA and Rehabilitation Act require no showing of improper purpose or animus because discrimination against people with disabilities often results from thoughtlessness rather than malice. The opinion is presented here in its entirety, but with citations omitted. These things are becoming ten-a-penny now, so joining David Mooney to review the latest one is Adam Carter, from StatCity.co.uk, and Paul Hirst, from The Times. There were some positives from the performance against Real Madrid on Tuesday, but were they all undone by the nature of the ending? Plus, it's not all bad as a favourable FA Cup draw followed a solid win at Leyton Orient... It's probably best to take the victories where you can this season. With Newcastle up next in the league and the race to make the top four getting tighter, we take a look at that game and how much Pep Guardiola has to balance with the second leg in the Bernabeu also in the next midweek. Where should the focus lie and how much energy needs to go into each match? After seven fan groups wrote an open letter to the club about ticket prices and ticket policy, we also look at that situation - and hear from representatives from some of the groups to hear their concerns. And... on top of all of that... what did you make of the 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out' tifo...? ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. A school sleepover should be a night filled with laughter, games, and unforgettable memories. For one group of kids, it certainly was—but not in the way they hoped. As the night wore on, the spirits of children long gone from both the school and the world returned, transforming their innocent fun into a terrifying ordeal. Screams replaced laughter as these young souls faced a nightmare they'd never forget.   If you have a real ghost story or supernatural event to report, please write into our show or call 1-855-853-4802!
