He was fired from 39% of his entertainment industry jobs. Then he turned serial failure into a superpower.John Tarnoff spent decades as a Hollywood studio executive and film producer, getting hired, getting fired, and reinventing himself over and over again. After surviving the dot-com crash, a string of layoffs, and an identity crisis in his 40s, John made a radical move: he went back to school at 50, landed his dream job at DreamWorks Animation, and eventually built a thriving coaching practice helping mid-career professionals take control of their careers. In this episode, John joins Carly and Joe to break down exactly how solopreneurs can apply the same reinvention framework he used, even if they're starting from scratch, feeling unconfident, or struggling with the identity shift from corporate employee to business owner. What you'll learn in this episode:→ Why your 40s and 50s are actually the ideal time to take big career risks → How to turn a messy career history into a compelling narrative that attracts clients → The three pillars every solopreneur needs: superpower clarity, a personal board of directors, and thought leadership → Why "if your market is everybody, your market is nobody," and how to find your niche → How to network authentically when you hate networking → Why confidence comes last (not first) and what to rely on instead → The one daily habit John recommends before anything else, and it's not what you'd expect → Why your identity is never your job title, and how to liberate yourself from that trapWhether you're mid-career and thinking about going solo, already running a one-person business, or stuck in the messy middle of a transition, this conversation will give you permission to stop waiting and start building.Find John: LinkedIn (search John Tarnoff Career Coach)Life First. Welcome to I Like Movies, this episode we discuss the 2010 Dreamworks Animation classic How To Train Your Dragon - the classic reverse Billy Elliot, followed by a pivot to a straightforward Billy Elliot.
After a brief, unexpected hiatus, we're back and diving into the swamp! In this episode, we explore the history and surprising rise of Shrek, the animated hit that changed the game for studios like DreamWorks Animation. From its unconventional production journey to its massive cultural impact, we discuss how Shrek became an unlikely success story—and why its humor, heart, and fairy tale twists still resonate with audiences today. Plus we tackle the pile up of fandom news and feedback that may have sent us on a few tangents and rabbit trails. .In this episode, I'm joined by Lindsey Caplan — organizational psychologist, former Hollywood screenwriter, and upcoming author — for a conversation about creativity, communication, and how people and groups are actually moved. Lindsey's path is anything but linear. She started her career on TV and film sets in Los Angeles, working on shows like Malcolm in the Middle, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and The Amazing Race. From there, she transitioned into learning and development at companies like DreamWorks Animation, Zendesk, and Credit Karma, eventually stepping fully into organizational design and change work at The Gathering Effect. Her new book, Moved — coming March 2027 — explores the forces that shape human behavior: what moves us, how we can move others, and why pull, not push, is the most sustainable path to influence. We talk about why the book took nine years to write, what she learned about the psychology of groups, and why "being seen and heard" is at the heart of all meaningful change. We dig into the creative process, including the messy parts: identity shifts, losing and regaining a creative voice, and what it takes to translate an idea that lives in your head into something that lands with other people. Lindsey shares how her storytelling roots shape her work today — from understanding stakes and motivation to designing experiences that create real engagement, not just compliance. We also explore the gap between knowing and doing, why so many best-practice books fail to stick inside organizations, and how leaders can communicate in ways that create ownership instead of resistance. If you're curious about influence, the craft of writing, or how to move people without pressure, this conversation is for you.

Hobson is the co-CEO of Ariel Investments, a board director of several Fortune 500 companies and nonprofit organizations, and a nationally recognized advocate for financial literacy and economic inclusion. We begin with a discussion of the formative childhood experiences that would shape Hobson's personal and professional trajectory. Hobson recalls how, as a young girl on the South Side of Chicago who regularly experienced economic insecurity, she was driven to work very hard and "to understand money" as a path to economic security for herself and for others. "My purpose was sealed very early," she says. After graduating from Princeton in 1991, Hobson joined the Chicago-based Ariel Investments. In the thirty-five years since, she has traveled from intern to co-CEO, building a $14 billion asset management firm with a mission to "transform the lives of everyone who entrusts us with their financial futures." Hobson walks us through her evolution as a leader, and describes Ariel's signature approach to long-term investing in companies and sectors that are "misunderstood, ignored and underfollowed," where vigorous and original research allows the team to identify mispriced securities and the opportunity to outperform. According to Hobson, Ariel's success has derived from the principles and practices of active patience ("being patient is really hard, it requires great restraint, great study, great discipline"), bold teamwork, and independent thinking – the focused expertise that supports the "conviction to have a different opinion." This approach made Ariel a pioneer, first in small cap stocks, where the firm's founder John Rogers tested the long-term value investment thesis, and later in mid cap and international markets. In 2021, Hobson launched Ariel Alternatives, which included its inaugural private equity fund, Project Black, focused on building to scale minority businesses that will be tier one suppliers to Fortune 500 companies, and Project Level, a new vehicle focused on "changing the game" in women's sports. Given the seismic and secular shifts in the industry, Hobson believes women's sports are "the next big growth opportunity… the small cap of sports." Hobson speaks passionately about all she has learned as a corporate director. Today, she serves on the board of JP Morgan Chase, and was a director of Estée Lauder Companies, DreamWorks Animation, and Starbucks, which she led as chair. She is equally animated by her civic commitments, learning early on it was "part of your job to be of service to others… it was sewn into my DNA." We discuss the inspiration she finds in her work with a number of nonprofit organizations, including After School Matters, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a new cultural institution she has created with her husband and filmmaker George Lucas. Hobson is fervent about the power of storytelling, and her and Lucas's belief that "everyone's story matters." Hobson has captured part of her own story in the New York bestselling Priceless Facts about Money, an immaculately researched and illustrated children's book that makes learning about money and finance accessible — and fun. And it is in young people that Hobson sees hope, even in challenging times, as they affirm her faith in the wonder and promise of human potential. "If you believe that is true," she says, "then everything is possible. Not anything — everything." Mentioned in this episode John W. Rogers, Jr., Ariel Founder, Chairman, and Co-CEO A Random Walk Down Wall Street (Burton Malkiel, 2024) Ariel Alternatives: Project Black, Project Level After School Matters Bloomberg Philanthropies Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Priceless Facts about Money (Mellody Hobson, 2024)

Roxy Striar, John Humphrey, & Jon Maturan react to Monsters vs. Aliens (2009), DreamWorks Animation's colorful, fast-paced sci-fi comedy that pays loving tribute to classic monster movies while delivering big laughs and surprising heart. Directed by Rob Letterman and Conrad Vernon, the film blends B-movie spectacle with family-friendly humor and blockbuster action. The story follows Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon – Legally Blonde, Big Little Lies), who is struck by a meteor on her wedding day and grows to 49 feet tall—earning the government-assigned name Ginormica. She's quickly recruited into a secret military team of monsters that includes Dr. Cockroach Ph.D. (Hugh Laurie – House, Veep), B.O.B. (Seth Rogen – Superbad, Pineapple Express), The Missing Link (Will Arnett – Arrested Development, The Lego Movie), and Insectosaurus (Kiefer Sutherland – 24, The Lost Boys). Together, they're tasked by General W.R. Monger (Kelsey Grammer – Frasier, X-Men: The Last Stand) with stopping the alien invader Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson – The Office, Super). Packed with standout moments like Ginormica's San Francisco rampage, B.O.B.'s indestructible antics, the monster team's Tokyo showdown, and the climactic battle against Gallaxhar's robot drone, Monsters vs. Aliens balances spectacle with themes of self-worth, independence, and embracing what makes you different. We break down the animation, performances, sci-fi references, and why this film remains a fun, underrated entry in DreamWorks' animated lineup. In this episode of The Girl Dad Show, Young Han sits down with Brian Schwartz — founder of SIZE, an advisory group of former C-suite operators supporting 60+ late-stage technology and consumer companies. Brian shares his global career journey across Expedia Group, DreamWorks Animation, and international markets, and opens up about how becoming a father reshaped his priorities, routines, and long-term plans. Brian reflects on raising a young daughter while building a high-performance career, the role of travel in expanding his children's worldview, and why financial readiness, stability, and aligned values mattered deeply in his family-planning decisions. He also explores the realities of modern parenting: evolving schedules, increasing responsibilities, and the need for a supportive partner, strong self-awareness, and intentional balance. ✨ All episodes of The Girl Dad Show are proudly sponsored by Thesis — helping founders go further, together. Thanks for watching! Takeaways Brian created a Madagascar-inspired New Year's countdown for kids and spent years living abroad while building a global marketing career. Remote work allowed him to form a strong bond with his daughter as a present and engaged girl dad. Travel is a core family value — exposure to new cultures is a priority for his children. Family planning was rooted in financial readiness and modeled after his entrepreneurial parents. He values siblings close in age to build companionship and shared experiences. Parenting requires deep self-reflection and balancing joy with challenge. Brian questions the ROI of traditional education and prioritizes happiness and opportunity over financial success. A supportive partner, financial planning, and maintaining personal interests create healthier family dynamics. Children's activities increasingly shape family schedules, requiring constant adaptation. Success is defined by fulfillment and presence — not just financial outcomes.

October 13, 2025 marked the 75th anniversary of the premiere of the Oscar-winning classic All About Eve, which the Alternate Ending crew decided made for a perfect excuse to revisit one of the most remarkable face-offs between two evenly-matched masterpieces in cinema history. In this corner: Eve, the caustically witty dark comedy about backstabbing and ageism in the world of legitimate theater. In the far corner: Sunset Blvd., the lacerating film noir about madness and ageism in the world of motion pictures. Two of the medium's most iconic female lead performances, top-tier screenplays by two of Hollywood's most celebrated writers... even if the team can't pick a favorite, it's a pleasure just to get to luxuriate in the presence of these two icons. To discuss the highs and... higher highs of these two classics, Tim is joined by Cameron, and Brian, and not least Zev, whose idea this was in the first place. Before getting to the main showdown, Cameron shares her thoughts on the new must-see cinephile bait, Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, Zev catches up with the must-see-somewhat-less DreamWorks Animation comedy Dog Man, and courtesy of Patreon supporter and regular podcast guest Andrew Milne, Tim gets a third perfect 10/10 masterwork to talk about, in the form of John Woo's 1989 action epic The Killer. Brian unfortunately wasn't able to catch up with a movie, as he's just out a stay at the hospital that's put him out of work for a few weeks. Help him out during this difficult time by visiting his GoFundMe page!
