Elementals are a foreign concept in a lot of ways. Creatures made up of water or air that are relatively intelligent, can be summoned or spontaneously created, and aren't just a humanoid in an element suit just seem weird. If you ever wandered where they come from, what they can do and how the fight, give this episode a listen. I want to specifically thank Keith Ammann and his great book The Monsters Know What They're Doing. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It's an amazing read!

19 Hits the Dragon is back to bring you the second part of our two-part combat series! Part one was dedicated to staying organized before combat begins, that you are set up for success once the dice start falling. Part two expands on this, as Mike and Rob delve into what to do once combat begins to make it an interesting and immersive extension of the roleplaying experience, and not a dull exercise in things hitting other things until some of those things are dead. The question of how to do this is examined largely through examining the teachings of tactics guru Keith Ammann, author of the essential blog The Monsters Know What They're Doing (www.themonstersknow.com), which he has spun off into books on the subject. Check his stuff out; Keith is a great writer who knows what he's talking about, and does a great job of breaking his considerations down, so that they make sense to everybody. It's a revelation! Also, Mike and Rob get into a civil, reasonable, and spirited debate about flanking rules. Dissent and discord! Similar premises leading to separate conclusions! All this and more in Episode 5 of 19 Hits the Dragon! Check it out! Tell your friends! And remember to like, comment, and subscribe! Jack Wain and I discuss what "ability" means within the 5e context. We take a look at what makes an effective player and how those skills are transferable to being a successful DM. We discuss ability skills and how some, such as the oft derided Animal Handling, get a bad rap through no fault of their own. This episode's Big Question is ability modifiers: big box or small box? 00:01:41 - How to determine player ability 00:08:58 - Signifiers of a good DM 00:20:40 - Ability scores 00:40:59 - Dissonance between player and character ability 00:50:36 - Improvisation in published adventures 00:55:26 - Impact of score simplification over earlier editions 01:00:30 - Big box or little box?
