In this episode of Rock is Lit, Richard Fulco, author of the new novel ‘We Are All Together', is here to take us on a rockin' jaunt through the late 1960s, where we'll encounter several iconic players on the music and literature scene from that era. If you're a fan of the Summer of Love and all the trimmings that go with it, you'll love his novel and this episode. Later, Elliott Landy drops by to talk even more about the 1960s music scene, a period he should know a lot about since he's been photographing rock stars since the mid-60s. Best known for his classic rock photographs, Elliott Landy was one of the first music photographers to be recognized as an “artist.” His celebrated works include album cover photographs for Bob Dylan's ‘Nashville Skyline', The Band's ‘Music From Big Pink' and ‘The Band' album, and Van Morrison's ‘Moondance'. He's also taken portraits of such rock icons as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, etc. He was the official photographer of the 1969 Woodstock Festival. And . . . Elliott has a new book out, entitled ‘Photographs of Janis Joplin On the Road & On Stage', featuring 129 photos, including 100 unpublished, accompanied by Janis's own words from recorded interviews by David Dalton of ‘Rolling Stone' magazine. HIGHLIGHTS:Richard Fulco and I talk about Syd Barrett's descent into mental illness and his exit from Pink Floyd1967: The Summer of Love—music, culture, vibe—but for African Americans, 1967 was known as The Long Hot SummerRichard's music career when he was in his twentiesThe story and characters in ‘We Are All Together'—Syd Barrett as inspiration behind the character DylanThe Beatles' performance on the ‘Ed Sullivan Show' in 1964The quest for fame and having “IT”The American Dream and racism and toxic ChristianityCharles MansonThe Merry PrankstersThe significance of the title of the novel and its connection to The BeatlesAndy Warhol, The Factory, The Velvet Underground with Nico, Lou Reed and their role in the novelThe depiction of the Monterey Pop Festival in the story, especially the performance of Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding CompanySome of the other icons who make cameos in the novel: Pete Townshend, Eric Burdon, Jann Wenner, Neal Cassady, William S. Episode 74: Countdown With Keith Olbermann A-Block (1:45) Let me tell you what is to come: Trump and DeSantis will both run for the '24 Republican Nomination. When DeSantis wins, Trump will run anyway as an independent, cinching the White House for Biden (or any Democrat) (2:05) The Republican establishment has, overnight, turned on Trump and burned the bridges to him. The front page of Murdoch's New York Post has an illustration of Trump as an egg, atop a wall, and in big block letters: "TRUMPTY DUMPTY" and a column inside nicknames him "Toxic Trump." (7:00) Let's review your doubts: Do you doubt DeSantis will run? You think he made that two-minute miniature Bible Epic movie just to run up the score in Florida? Do you doubt the GOP has bailed? Peter King has just said Trump "should no longer be the face of the Republican Party." (12:10) Now Kevin McCarthy gets to lead an impotent, fractured Republican party in the House with not enough power to crush the crazies but not enough power to impeach Biden, either (11:50) And Trump got them a runoff in Georgia where the 203,000 Georgians who voted for Brian Kemp but did not vote for Herschel Walker are really expected to vote for Walker in the runoff?  B-Block (17:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Spaghetti in Staten Island (18:22) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Glenn Youngkin apologizes to the Pelosis but only after the election is over, and competes with Chris Cillizza and Elon Musk screwing twitter into the ground and threatening to turn your non-blue-checked tweets into junk mail, for the honors. ( 23:14) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The story of the anniversary of my late beloved puppy Mishu. C-Block (37:02) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL, CONTINUED: The passing of Mishu. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I don't think Mondo has faced much rejection in it's storied history. Everything they do from posters, to wax, to what is possibly the best Battle Cat ever made seems to sell out. Well, except for their puzzles and tikis. Beyond product drops, I think the most immediate response you can garner is after a con. While at the con, people are all excited, but let the dust settle and you get some real reactions. Even after a second look, Star Wars killed it at MCM. While the announcements were light for Joe, Femtroopers and Shadow Tracker were crowd pleasers. I love Christmas and I love Optimus Prime, but who is buying a candy cane Prime, even if it is a new mold? Rejected!

Experts are predicting an economic downturn in the coming months. Tech companies across the US have already implemented hiring freezes and are trimming up to 20% of their workforce. Unfortunately, this means that corporate sustainability initiatives will also likely fall by the wayside to save cash. In the wake of the recession and the new wave of globalization, Jag Lamba, founder of Certa, discusses specific practices that businesses can implement to prioritize ESG, mitigate risk, and maintain visibility into their supply chain, where 70% of all risk lies. Jag also shares the story behind Certa's no-code platform and how it was designed to make it easy to digitize and manage the lifecycle of all suppliers, partners, and customers. With automated onboarding, contract lifecycle management, and ESG management, Certa eliminates the procurement bottleneck and allows companies to onboard third-parties 3x faster.

Compliance Perspectives

By Adam Turteltaub Third-party risk is the risk that keeps expanding. Data security and anticorruption risk have long been the focus. Now, though, the risks are broadening to include issues such as where materials are sourced and the labor that produces it. Shu Min Ho, Partner in the Singapore office of the law firm Sidley and Sam Johnson, Senior Managing Associate there explain in this podcast that with the rapid adoption of ESG programs, the scope of risks is dramatically increasing, especially considering how much ESG encompasses. To be effective, compliance teams need to focus their ESG third party risk efforts on those areas of the supply chain that are most likely to harm the business beyond the traditional legal framework. That means understanding your business and where the risks are. For example, in the technology hardware business that likely includes labor standards, worker protections and mineral sourcing. Increasingly it also means looking beyond your suppliers to their major suppliers as well. That effort requires tremendous cooperation from the business unit, procurement and, of course, the suppliers themselves. When looking at suppliers, take time to understand their business model to determine how they make money. Then watch out for signs that something may not be right. For example, if a product is suspiciously inexpensive, it may be the result of workers forced to labor long hours or outsourcing to companies with limited or no safeguards in place. Be aware, too, that expectations are different. An environmental review in the past may have looked at how toxic waste is handled. Now, sustainability is likely much more of a consideration. Finally, be especially sensitive to human trafficking and modern slavery. They are ESG issues increasingly subject to regulatory expectations. In fact, a separate due diligence effort may be necessary in this area. Listen in to learn more about how ESG is calling for a second look at third party due diligence.

Union County Public Schools could soon outsource substitute teachers.  School board members will vote on allowing a staff management group to hire substitutes during the next meeting on Monday, Oct. 10. It's a possible action the district could take as school districts across the nation scramble to find substitute teachers. “We're all hands-on deck and trying to be creative this year,” district superintendent Andrew Houlihan said. UCPS leaders said over the last year, they've been meeting with potential staffing and management groups to address the need for substitutes. The board of education could vote to approve a substitute staffing company called ESS to fill positions they haven't been able to. Biden's move also covers thousands convicted of the crime in the District of Columbia. He is also calling on governors to issue similar pardons for those convicted of state marijuana offenses, which reflect the vast majority of marijuana possession cases. For years, hopeful reformers have touted the promise of third parties as an antidote to our political polarization. But when so many of the issues that voters care about most — like abortion, or climate change, or guns — are also the most divisive, can any third party actually bring voters together under a big tent? Or will it just fracture the electorate further?Today's guests say it's worth it to try. Andrew Yang and David Jolly are two of the co-founders of the Forward Party, a new political party focused on advancing election reform measures, including open primaries, independent redistricting commissions in every state and the widespread adoption of ranked choice voting. Yang is a former Democratic candidate for president and a former Democratic candidate for mayor of New York City. Jolly is a former Republican congressman and executive chairman of the Serve America Movement. Together, they joined Jane Coaston live onstage at the Texas Tribune Festival to discuss why they've built a party and not a nonprofit, what kinds of candidates they want to see run under their banner and what Democrats are getting wrong in their midterm strategy right now.(A full transcript of the episode will be available midday on the Times website.)

Cole South is the Co-founder of SDDC Goods, an e-commerce business that focuses on building profitable and marketable brands from the ground up. As part of two brands — BirdRock Baby and Gold BJJ — Cole has gained valuable experience, from maintaining multiple inventories to the market of cryptocurrencies. His passion for innovation allowed him to create Synchronize, a software tool designed for e-commerce businesses that helps streamline catalog management and sales predictions. In this episode… Successfully managing a product inventory is all about having a stable process in place and a reliable framework that could maintain the momentum of a business. But what happens when the inventory runs out? According to Cole South, mismanaging inventory could be costly for a business, however, completely running out could be catastrophic. Fixing such an issue would not only cost substantially more, but it often takes time, which, for an online business, is of the utmost importance. Cole, however, has developed a system for success that integrates e-commerce and inventory data across multiple platforms to help you keep track of your available catalog. That way, your e-commerce business is free to focus more on profitability and growth. In this episode of the Quiet Light Podcast, Joe Valley welcomes Cole South, a professional poker player turned successful entrepreneur. They talk about overcoming the different challenges of keeping a stable product inventory, maintaining shipment timeframes, understanding in-house and third-party warehouse costs, and how to tie all that up into e-commerce profitability.
