Robert Guarino, the maestro behind the tantalizing creations at 5 Napkin Burger in the concrete jungle of NYC, embarked on his culinary journey as a teenage table-busser. Eventually, he found himself in the hallowed halls of Cornell Hotel School, where he fine-tuned his craft. Destiny led him to cross paths with the enigmatic Simon Oren in 2001, who recognized Robert's prowess and brought him aboard as the GM at the vibrant Marseille. Together, they launched Nizza in 2007, an appetizing prelude to the birth of the legendary 5 Napkin Burger in 2008. The venture expanded to an impressive seven locations, only to later return to its core, with two quintessential establishments nestled in the heart of NYC. Robert's gastronomic footprint extends further, as he's also contributed to other mouthwatering neighborhood concepts like the lively Playa Betty's and the irresistible Schmackary's Cookies. As well as the soon to be open Sempre Oggi, aggressively seasonal, vegetable forward, modern Italian restaurant opening 2023 on Manhattan's Upper West Side. We live in Manhattan's Upper West Side and Rebecca wants her own car. She has wanted a cute little car -- a Fiat -- for since her "Ruby"-- the sporty plum colored Mercury--died of neglect shortly after we met. I oppose raising another car in our car-infested city and GHG choked world -- but I gave in -- she really, really wants a hunk of well-designed metal. My reasoning? -- If she experiences the trials of city-based car ownership, it will not be long before we will be car-free, once again. So this BCR R & A is a debate on whether it is a good idea to own a car in the Big Apple. We sat outside 5 Napkin Burger off Broadway and 84th Street -- under a heat lamp -- surround by well-designed, hunks of metal.Contact Rebecca and Alan at barcrawlradio@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Have you ever wondered how clean your motel room was? You kind of know -- right? Not really that spotless -- but you did not want to think about it because the bed was made and you didn't have to do it. Becky and I recorded a BCR episode on Prohibition in Long Island and NYC at Patchogue Long Island with Chris Kretz of the Long Island History Project and guest Jonathan lly a curator at the Long Island Museum of American Art -- which will post next -- BCR #68. We recorded in a bar formerly called Hoptron but the new owners did not want us to reveal the new name.Anyway -- we stayed at a Ramada Inn which was under construction at the time. I was not happy about the situation and so investigated the general cleanliness of these away from home bedrooms,Between you and me -- do not touch the TV remote -- disgusting!!! So this episode is about mold and hair follicles. Proceed at your own risk.Becky and I recorded at 5 Napkin Burger on Broadway and W. 84th Street. Becky and I had two very different and -- at the same time -- very similar experiences this week -- both involving children with "high" ideals. Young people who are actively involved with doing something about what they know is true and real.During the recording, Becky had an awesome vodka martini with a stick o'olives -- I tried out Flower Power IPA at 5 Napkin Burger on Broadway and W. 84th Street. We are there -- pretty regularly -- set-up at the front corner of the bar. Jaylean [sp?] our barkeep was as cute and helpful as ever -- the tower of onion rings was hot and delicious. So -- join us on our bar crawl through life.If you like what you hear email us at barcrawlradio@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We loved the idea so much -- we stole it. We recently met Alison Burns and Lulu Picart who have a podcast called 10K Dollar Day in which they imagine expensive vacations they wish they could afford. Check them out -- they are funny and cute and so young and go take a listen to their wonderful banter. So, Becky and I were inspired. We wanted to imagine our $10K vacation. Becky played by the rules and I did not. There is much wise advise about traveling in this episode that you do not want to miss.We had our conversation at 5 Napkin Burger on Broadway and W. 84th Street. And we invite our listeners to share your versions of a $10,000 vacation. Email us at barcrawlradio@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Becky and I picked a complicated topic to talk about this week -- What to do with public statues that are seen as representing horrible men - and yes -- it is almost always statues of men. Should Columbus atop that pedestal at the southwest corner of Central Park be toppled? VOX describes this lauded figure as "a homicidal tyrant who initiated the two greatest crimes in the history of the Western Hemisphere, the Atlantic slave trade, and the American Indian genocide." See more. What about statues to the Confederacy of the southern states? What do we do with those? Or with the statue honoring Teddy Roosevelt the bestrides the American Museum of Natural History, with the white man high on a majestic horse, flanked by a native American and a Black man? There's examples of this sort all over our city and country. What do we do? That was the topic and we got into it.We would love to hear your opinions to this question and discussion. Send your ideas to barcrawlradio@gmail.comBTW: We were at 5 Napkin Burger and spoke with Bela (sorry we do not know her last name) who is the lovely bartender and takes such good care of Becky and me. But we did not include our conversation with her. Maybe next time. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This is our "other other" BCR episode -- the one in which Becky and I just talk. We consider it a form of marriage counseling -- you know -- real talk -- mature talk -- deep listening -- about those areas of our relationship that need to be investigated. We talked about television. This BCR episode was recorded at 5 Napkin Burger on Broadway and W. 84th Street. Met the new manager -- Julio -- who treated your BCR hosts very well. We followed the recording by sharing a fat 5N burger - onion rings -- french fries. We recommend -- every so often. And in case you are passing 5 Napkin Burger and see us recording -- drop in and let us know what you think of our programming -- OR -- email us at barcrawlradio@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument -- W. 89th Street in Riverside Park -- has sat majestically overlooking our Upper West Side neighborhood in Manhattan since 1902. The battles of the Civil War and the Northern generals festoon its Greek-styled columns - and it is slowly crumbling under the wear of the elements and time. For this BCR show we talk with officials of New York City Parks, John Herrold and Jonathan Kuhn -- and the president of the Soldiers' and Sailors's Memorial Association, Peter Galasinao -- and historian Cal Snyder about the Monuments history, its importance in Memorial Day commemorations and plans for its restoration. If you want more information about what is being done to restore the Monument you can link to the NYC Parks Department "Conditions Survey and Restoration Treatment Study," and the "Conditions Report by the New York City Landmark Conservancy."Becky and I recorded our conversation at Gebhard's Beer Culture Bar -- and started this show's "crawl" at 5 Napkin Burger where we talked about healthy approaches to senior urinating issues. In a sense -- like the grand Monument on W. 89th Street -- we are in need of restoration. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
What a wonderful opportunity and pleasure to have a conversation with NY State Assembly person Linda Rosenthal. Her Manhattan office is next door to Gebhards Beer Culture Bar and when she knocked on the porch window during a BCR recording -- we knew we had to invite her on the podcast. We talked with the SA person about her success at bringing "Menstrual Equity" to the state and her fight to extend the statute of limitations to prosecute child sex offenders. And we talked politics -- the shift to the left as the Democrats take over both houses of the state legislature. Linda is a life long Upper West Sider; so, we commiserated over the "corporatizing" of our neighborhood -- and much more.BCR #24 starts off at 5 Napkin Burger . Becky and I try to match Ira Glass's exquisite "This American Life" style. Of course we failed, but it was fun trying. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
