Send us a textWhat can a Star Wars show teach us about organizing, resistance, and healing? In this episode of the Amplify RJ Podcast, I sit down with strategist, therapist, and writer Gabes Torres to talk about Andor—yes, that Star Wars show—and what it reveals about real-life revolution. We dive into how Andor de-romanticizes rebellion and reflects the complex realities of movement work: the banality of evil, conflict in organizing, disposability culture, and the painful but necessary tension between rest and resistance. Gabes shares insights from their piece on the show, their organizing and healing work in the Global South, and the ways marine mammals and myth can inform our strategy.Whether or not you've seen the show, this conversation is about so much more than the galaxy far, far away—it's about our world and how we build toward collective liberation with nuance, integrity, and care.0:00 – Intro: What is Andor + Character Breakdown 5:20 – Meet Gabes Torres: Healer, Strategist, Rebel 9:42 – How Andor De-Romanticizes Revolution 14:20 – Disney, Propaganda & Revolutionary Storytelling 19:35 – The Banality of Evil in a Boardroom 25:00 – Real-World Parallels: Propaganda, Gaza, Gorman & Genocide 26:45 – Parenting, Powerlessness & Purpose 29:21 – Consciousness Building as Resistance 32:20 – Gabes on Luthen, Clea & Strategy in Movement 36:42 – Bix, Trauma & Knowing When to Step Back 40:28 – Organizing Through Burnout & Wavering Commitment 44:30 – Humananizing vs. Ruthless Sacrifice47:40 – Disposability Culture in Movements 49:10 – Disagreeing Is Not a Failure of Solidarity 52:00 – Addressing Conflict & Building in Organizing 56:20 – Is there Shared Vision for Our Resistance? 1:00:23 – Activist Ecosystems, Movement Mentorship from Marine Mammals 1:07:30 – Upside Down Triangle: Rethinking Power 1:08:50 – Support Gabes & Psychosocial Care for Organizers Connect with Gabes:https://gabestorres.com/https://www.instagram.com/gabestorres/Read her article: https://gabestorres.substack.com/p/andorSupport mental health care for organizers in the Global South https://gabestorres.com/support/Rep Amplify RJ Merch Connect with us on:Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Threads, YouTube, and TikTok!SUPPORT by sharing this podcast and leaving a rating or review

A quiet afternoon. Two young girls. And something that defied all logic. Stacy and her cousin Diane were simply playing with dolls when they saw it—long, dark hair floating in the doorway… with no body attached. No breeze, no tricks of light—just hair, hovering unnaturally and deliberately. The terrifying image has stayed with them for decades, and what makes it even more chilling? They both remember it exactly the same way. Was it a ghost? A warning? Or something far stranger? In a phone call on Tuesday afternoon, President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the need for a peace agreement in the ongoing Ukraine conflict. The leaders agreed that the war must end with a lasting ceasefire, emphasizing the human cost of the conflict. Trump and Putin also highlighted the potential for improved U.S.-Russia relations, suggesting that a successful resolution could lead to significant economic deals. However, the conversation also touched on broader regional issues like the Middle East and the threat of nuclear proliferation. While these discussions may seem promising, the long-standing tensions between Washington and Moscow tell a different story. Trump's past ties with Putin have raised concerns about the sincerity of this peace talk. Putin's rhetoric is often seen as a strategy to improve Russia's global standing while continuing aggressive actions against Ukraine. The question remains: Are these peace talks a genuine effort to resolve conflict or another tactical move by both leaders to shift the geopolitical landscape in their favor? I'm back with Lesson 5 in my Coming Home to Yourself series, sharing what I've found to be the seven essential foundations for building a healthy, lasting, and loving relationship. I also talk about how some of these foundations have helped shape my relationship with my new partner, Dr. Fox (not his real name…more on that later)! As I get ready to celebrate my 50th birthday in April, I've been reflecting on the biggest life lessons I've learned about love, partnership, and personal growth. The health of our relationships has a huge impact on our overall well-being, which is why choosing the right partner, whether you decide to get married or not, is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make. A thriving relationship isn't just about chemistry; it takes emotional maturity, communication, self-trust, resilience, and daily effort. In fact, love isn't just about finding the right person, it's about being the right person. Download this episode's worksheet at http://andreaowen.com/664 What you'll hear about in this episode: Emotional Maturity and How to Own Your Sh*t: Self-awareness, self-regulation, and recognizing when you're projecting past wounds. Radical Honesty and Authentic Communication: Honesty fuels connection, even when it's hard or messy. Self-Trust & Independence: Keep your passions, friendships, and personal growth alive. Conflict Resilience: You Two vs. The Problem: Ditch shame, defensiveness, and the need to “win.” Letting Go of Control and Holding Boundaries: Trust your partner while standing firm in your needs. Deep Respect and Mutual Appreciation: Love is a daily choice, not just a feeling. Shared Vision and Growth: Use the “Relationship Check-In” to assess what's working, what's not, and what you both need. Resources from this episode:
Jason talks with Chris Gade, VP for communications for the University of Minnesota, about ongoing discussions between the U of M and Fairview Health System about the U's recent proposal.

I'm excited to share this conversation with Will McCollum and Matthew Marshall, the passionate minds behind Citymakers Collective. This summer, they're hosting a transformative two-week program in Charleston, featuring some of the top practitioners in the New Urbanism and human-centered design movements. Their approach is holistic, hands-on, and experiential, with a mission to equip the next generation of city makers to design and build places that are resilient, beautiful, and centered on people. In this episode, we delve into the challenges of traditional education, what's missing, and why they felt compelled to create this innovative summer program. If you're a young professional or student working in the built environment—whether you're an architect, planner, builder, developer, engineer or something else—I highly encourage you to check it out and consider applying. Learn more at: citymakerscollective.org TAKEAWAYS The City Makers Collective program teaches principles that make cities more livable, sustainable, and people-focused. Participants engage with Charleston's urban fabric through walking tours, real-world case studies, and collaborative studio projects. The program blends timeless design principles with modern needs to create places that work for today's challenges. Architects, planners, developers, and more come together to foster holistic learning and solutions. Students learn how to navigate market realities, collaborate effectively, and implement sustainable practices in urban design. Instructors include top practitioners like Lou Oliver and Maria Sanchez (Estudio Urbano), offering a wealth of knowledge and diverse perspectives. The program addresses the lack of foundational training in urbanism and traditional design in most architecture schools. Participants gain access to a powerful network of professionals, creating lasting connections for their careers. The program offers scholarships and affordable housing options to ensure a wide range of students can participate. The City Makers Collective aims to grow beyond this summer, offering ongoing programs to shape the future of urbanism and architecture. My wife often jokes that I read 4-5 books simultaneously. It's true! If you own a digital book reader or use an audiobook app like Audible to consume books, then you've probably jumped between a title or two as well, depending on your mood. By Editor, Concierge Medicine Today I personally love bouncing between a few titles and topics. I think the secret is listening or reading one chapter at a time once or twice a week! Then, I jump onto a podcast path, perhaps with a similar author I find interesting in the car or during a workout. But finding the right balance between learning and pleasure is important, especially FOR Doctors! Reading a few books simultaneously helps me avoid getting stuck or bored. If a book or a chapter is too slow, allow yourself to skip a track or jump a few pages. Life is too short, and there are too many great books to push through painfully. Throughout nearly the past two decades here at Concierge Medicine Today, we compiled a list of books that either I've read and found helpful or your peers and those we've interviewed over the years here at Concierge Medicine Today, our conference, the Concierge Medicine Forum, or our podcast, The DocPreneur Leadership Podcast, have been recommended to us on this topic. Note: If you're specifically only looking for books about Concierge Medicine, we included a few recommendations at the end of the article we would offer for your consideration as well. Hey Family Brand! It's Melissa here, and today, I'm beyond excited to introduce you to Brad Nelson, also known as the Debt Free Dad. Brad has an incredible story about going from the weight of debt to a life of financial freedom, and he's here to share how he did it and how you can too. If you've ever felt alone in your financial struggles, this episode is for you! Brad breaks down simple, practical steps to help families like ours get out of debt and start building the future we want. Brad opens up about his early financial journey and the challenges he faced, from living paycheck-to-paycheck to ultimately losing his home. He shares how this wake-up call led him to completely transform his mindset and make debt freedom a reality. Brad's story is one so many of us can relate to—thinking we'll manage “someday” while trying to keep up with life's demands. But he shows us that, with the right mindset and some determination, financial freedom is possible. One thing Brad emphasizes is the importance of mindset. Getting out of debt isn't easy, but it starts with a vision and a commitment to change. He talks about how having a clear vision for his future helped him make tough choices, like cutting back on unnecessary spending. This vision was a game-changer, motivating him to stay on track when things got hard. Brad encourages all of us to sit down and get honest about what we want our financial lives to look like—and to start taking small steps to get there. We also dive into the topic of family finances and how to involve our kids in positive, age-appropriate ways. Brad suggests bringing children into simple budgeting conversations, teaching them that “no” doesn't mean “never,” and that financial responsibility is about intentional choices. It's about giving them the tools to build a healthy relationship with money that will last a lifetime. Lastly, Brad shares how he's now helping others on their financial journeys through his Debt Free Dad podcast and membership community, Roots of Personal Finance. By providing accountability and support, Brad has created a space where people don't have to feel alone in their financial struggles. This community is all about giving families the tools and support to reach their goals, one step at a time. P.S. Registration is now open for our couples retreat in Hawaii! In this episode of The Tech Leader's Playbook, Chad L Brown shares his journey from being a struggling media production company owner to becoming a leadership engagement expert. He discusses the importance of taking responsibility as a leader, embracing discomfort for growth, and the significance of having difficult conversations. Chad introduces the 'Shit Hors D'oeuvre Principle' to illustrate how avoiding small issues can lead to larger problems. He emphasizes the need for leaders to enroll their teams in a shared vision to drive success and fulfillment in the workplace. In this conversation, Avetis discusses the importance of hiring for alignment and growth, emphasizing that not all employees seek rapid advancement. He highlights the need for companies to engage with their employees meaningfully and address issues proactively to avoid passive-aggressive exits. The discussion transitions into work-life balance, where Antaplyan challenges traditional notions of balance, advocating for a vision-driven approach that prioritizes both family and work commitments. Takeaways Leadership is about the results you create with others. Taking responsibility for outcomes is crucial for effective leadership. Embracing discomfort can lead to significant personal and professional growth. Avoiding difficult conversations can lead to larger issues down the line. The 'Shit Hors D'oeuvre Principle' illustrates the importance of addressing small problems early. Leaders must project future outcomes to guide their teams effectively. Short-term comfort can lead to long-term pain in leadership. Effective communication is key to maintaining team dynamics. Addressing red flags early is crucial. Using employees as tools can lead to burnout. Work-life balance should be redefined as a vision-driven approach. Effective systems should not overshadow the purpose of work. Entrepreneurs should focus on scaling themselves. In episode 2, of Season 5, after the Living Leadership segment, I provide a brief lecture on Kouzes and Posner's "The Leadership Challenge," during which I describe the fundamentals of leadership, the characteristics of admired leaders, and highlight the Five Practices (or behaviors) of Exemplary Leaders. In the Living Leadership Interview segment, I discuss leadership philosophy and Transformational Leadership with Dr. Sheldon Tate, the Executive Director of Recreation at George Mason University. Dr. Tate describes his life journey from being an African-American student at a Predominately White Institution (PWI) to completing his dissertation research study in a compelling, deliberative, and thoughtful way. And he details how mentors, listening to his inner voice, and being reflective and intentional were foundational to his development. He emphasizes that leadership is earned, not given - which is accomplished by building relationships, developing trust, and being values-driven. He cares deeply about the Five Leadership Practices and provides great examples for why titled leaders must Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. Dr. Tate also describes how his experience as an athlete and high level basketball referee allowed him to see what he is capable of and significantly impacted his perspective as a leader, a mentee, a husband, and a father. The conversation is high energy and lively; I hope you enjoy it! Send me your thoughts and let's keep the conversation going on Twitter (@TingleJK) or on LinkedIn.
Music Studio Startup: Helping music teachers thrive as entrepreneurs
Today's conversation is one about being a lifelong learner, managing competing priorities and finite time, and aligning a team to work towards a shared vision. Most of us can probably relate to at least some of these things from our roles as teachers and studio owners, but my guest today is neither a music teacher nor a studio owner. Today I'm talking to Bradley Kunda, a musician and Product Owner for the popular music notation app, MuseScore. Being on a software team, Bradley brings a really different perspective to these topics that I think you're going to enjoy and learn a lot from. Here's my conversation with Bradley: A full transcript and resources from this episode can be found at MusicStudioStartup.com/episode152. Sixty percent of the global population handwashes their clothing in rivers, streams, and buckets. While living and volunteering in a remote village in India, Nav Sawhney witnessed firsthand the immense burden this chore placed on women like his neighbor Divya. Determined to find a solution, Nav returned to the UK, founded The Washing Machine Project (TWMP), and created the manual "Divya" washing machine. However, TWMP faced challenges scaling its impact to reach more people who desperately needed it.Meanwhile, in the United States, the Whirlpool Foundation had developed a similar off-grid manual washing machine, recognizing that this same laborious task deepens social inequities and stunts personal advancement. With the vast resources of Whirlpool engineers, the Foundation was well-equipped to produce these machines yet struggled to find an effective distribution method. The subsequent, serendipitous collaboration between TWMP and the Whirlpool Foundation is yielding incredible impact at scale. We invited Nav Sawhney, Founder of TWMP, and Deb O'Connor, Managing Director of the Whirlpool Foundation, to speak about the origin of their "one plus one equals three" relationship, their human-centric approach to Whirlpool employee engagement, and the significant “unlock” their work together will have on women and girls worldwide, including Nav's friend Divya and her family.Listen for insights on:The “Washing Divide” and its impact on inhibiting economic growth and social inequalityIntroducing employees to a social issue and inviting them to be part of the solutionBalancing empathy and action when working directly with beneficiariesResources + Links:Deb O'Connor's LinkedInNav Sawhney's LinkedInSustainable Brands: How Whirlpool, Washing Machine Project Are Bridging ‘the Global Washing Divide'Meet the Divya Washing Machine (00:00) - Welcome to Purpose 360 (00:13) - Whirlpool (02:02) - Meet Deb and Nav (04:51) - Washing Machine Project (05:48) - First Reaction (08:11) - Global Washing Divide (09:29) - Design (11:44) - The Name (15:44) - Kolams (16:46) - Insights to These Relationships (17:51) - Employee Involvement (19:00) - Committment (20:20) - Reception (22:34) - Number of Machines (23:42) - Purpose in an AI-Driven World (25:03) - Final Thoughts (26:49) - Wrap Up
Dr. Stan Tatkin, co-founder of the PACT Institute, discusses the importance of secure functioning in relationships and the principles of mutual care and the couple bubble. He emphasizes the need for couples to create a shared vision and set of social contracts to protect and support each other. What's this? A bonus Opinionpalooza episode for one and all? That's right! The hits just keep coming from SCOTUS this week, and two big decisions landed Thursday that might easily get lost in the mix: Ohio v EPA and SEC v Jarkesy. Both cases shine a light on the conservative legal movement (and their billionaire funders') long game against administrative agencies. In Ohio v EPA, the Court struck down the EPA's Good Neighbor Rule, making it harder for the agency to regulate interstate ozone pollution. This decision split along ideological lines, and is part of a stealthy dismantling of the administrative state. SEC v Jarkesy severely hinders the agency's ability to enforce actions against securities fraud without federal court involvement, and the decision will affect many other agencies. In her dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor pointed out how this power grab by the court disrupts Congress's ability to delegate authority effectively. Project 2025 just got a jump start at SCOTUS, and we have two more big administrative cases yet to come, the so-called Chevron cases: Loper Bright v Raimondo and Relentless, Inc. v Department of Commerce. This is shaping up to be a good term for billionaires and a court apparently hungry to expand its power. Dahlia Lithwick is joined by Slate's own Mark Joseph Stern (of course) and they are saved from any regulatory confusion by environmental and administrative law all-star, Lisa Heinzerling, the Justice William J. Brennan, Jr., Professor of Law at the Georgetown University Law Center, who served in the EPA under President Obama. This is part of Opinionpalooza, Slate's coverage of the major decisions from the Supreme Court this June. We kicked things off this year by explaining How Originalism Ate the Law.
