A little bonus cross-over episode for you Focus listeners. On our The Price of Music Podcast, we had two very special guests talk about how to actually make important change happen in the UK's live industry at grassroots level, and improve the live music fan's experience: Lord Kevin Brennan of Canton, Labour member of the House of Lords – and a recording musician himself. We also speak to Shain Shapiro, who amongst other things is author of This Must Be The Place: How Music Can Make Your City Better. (They are both speaking about this on 10th June at the Music Cities Convention in Hull, FYI.)** As ever, our Patreon Superfans get the full interviews – with 50% extra conversation! Become a Superfan of the podcast for free – and enjoy the exclusive weekly Lock-in bonus section! **We talk about the important stuff that fans care about: surge ticket pricing, local grassroots venues, music fan associations and more – and it's all built on the results of the UK's Fan–led Review of Live and Electronic Music, the House of Commons committee special report that Lord Brennan oversaw. He explains what he learned and what can – and should – be done next. Then Shain explains why live music must be treated as a "vital public good" – i.e. just like libraries or the NHS – and how people like you can build real political heft, in order to save their struggling local spaces. Lord Brennan reflects on his past work with the Music Streaming Inquiry, examining how parliamentary reports can ripple out to create real-world impact for creators, even when they don't instantly become law.Essential learnings from the live fans' report: From transport and safety to fair ticketing, Lord Brennan boils down the core pillars that everyday music lovers actually care about. The surge pricing backlash: The data doesn't lie – fans are united in their hatred of dynamic ticket surging. We discuss the urgent need for primary market transparency and why standard "free-market" arguments don't apply to the emotional experience of a gig.Shain Shapiro breaks down how society has prioritised the passive consumption of music (the noun) while deprioritising community participation (the verb), leading to the isolation of modern music fans. Why you should know your ward councillor. Shain outlines how forming local "Music Fan Associations" can force local councils to unlock underutilised property and rethink how spaces are used. The 24-Hour Dictators: Both guests flex their imaginary emergency powers to fix the ecosystem, including slashing VAT on tickets, restructuring property business rates, and mandating grassroots funding. As ever, we welcome your feedback, emails and – in particular – any questions you might have about how the music biz works!Email us: thepriceofmusicpodcast@gmail.comStuart and Joe======TPOM online: http://tpom.uk/Support The Price of Music on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/ThePriceofMusicFollow Stuart on X - @stuartdredgeFollow The Price of Music on X - @PriceofMusicpodFor sponsorship opportunities, please email - joe@musically.com

Plus, Vic Ferrari shares another Confessions of a Retired Detective story, callers debate car repair ripoffs and bank abuses, and Walter previews another UFO update with Dave Scott as the show continues tracking one of the biggest disclosure stories in modern history. Episode 421: On July 28, 1996, a fisherman hauling nets off the coast of Devon, England pulled up a body. The dead man had no wallet, no identification — nothing but a Rolex watch still ticking on his wrist. When British police traced the watch, it gave them a name: Ronald Joseph Platt, 51, of Essex. When they went looking for him, they found him — apparently alive. The trail led back across the Atlantic to Ayr, a small town in southwestern Ontario, where roughly seventy people had spent years trusting the wrong man with everything they had. By the time anyone understood what he'd done, he was already gone, and Ronald Platt was dead in the English Channel. Gina Carano vs. Ronda Rousey — do people actually care? Joe Pags and the crew have some fun with the matchup before diving into a bigger issue: why everything is suddenly locked behind streaming platforms and how Americans are getting nickel-and-dimed just to watch local sports. Pags asks whether lawmakers may eventually need to step in. He also gives an update on hantavirus concerns making headlines. Then, Rep. Brandon Gill joins to break down his viral committee questioning style, whether he's trying to corner politicians in their lies or simply expose the truth for the American people, and the new House GOP task force investigating alleged Medicaid fraud in Ohio. This episode shifts from investing to the growing threat of scams—especially targeting older adults—breaking down how common fraud tactics work, from fake virus alerts and spoofed calls to AI-driven voice cloning and recovery scams. Don and Tom emphasize a simple but powerful rule: if you didn't initiate the contact, assume it's a scam, and never act under pressure. The conversation then pivots to listener questions, covering how to construct a globally diversified portfolio with proper U.S./international balance, how to structure fixed income for retirement income needs, and why investors should resist the urge to “take winnings” after gains—focusing instead on long-term discipline and occasional rebalancing.0:05 Scams targeting older adults and why susceptibility increases1:21 AARP article and life in The Villages as a scam hotspot backdrop3:05 Fake virus alerts and tech support scams (iPad example, $25K loss)6:10 Scale of scam losses (older Americans, underreporting, $5B+ impact)6:48 Common scam types: fake purchases, investment fraud, and urgency tactics7:23 Caller ID spoofing and law enforcement impersonation scams8:25 AI voice cloning and evolving scam sophistication8:39 Call screening tools and reducing scam exposure9:53 Bank impersonation scams using stolen personal data11:14 IRS scams—what the IRS actually does (mail only)11:57 Key defense rule: urgency = scam12:47 “Recovery scams” targeting prior victims13:27 Core principle: assume unsolicited contact is fraudulent14:44 Transition to listener Q&A intro and contact methods16:07 Portfolio construction: balancing U.S. vs international exposure using ETFs18:00 Fixed income strategy: BND vs CDs, money markets, income buckets19:26 Listener question: should you “take profits” after gains?20:03 Why long-term investing ≠ gambling (stay invested vs timing)21:39 Exception: rebalancing vs profit-taking22:38 Historical perspective on long-term economic growthQuestions? Alright, folks! Buckle up because today we're diving into some serious shenanigans happening in the business world. Eric's shining a spotlight on a certain Chinese company, Vivor, that's been on a mission to swipe American inventors' ideas right out from under their noses—talk about a low blow! We're talking outright patent theft, and it's enough to make any small business owner throw their toolbox across the room. But wait, there's more! We'll also dish out the deets on some critical product recalls you'll want to keep an eye on, so your home improvement projects don't turn into a trip to the ER. So grab your coffee (or whatever helps you cope with this madness), and let's get into it because this midweek update is packed with juicy info that'll have you questioning your next Amazon purchase! In today's midweek update, we dive headfirst into the murky waters of patent theft and the ongoing saga of small businesses battling corporate giants. Eric's taken a magnifying glass to the troublesome practices of Vivor, a Chinese company notorious for its flagrant disregard for intellectual property rights. As he lays out the case, it's not just a few bad apples; it's a whole orchard of innovation being pilfered right under our noses! With examples like the Vivor electric vacuum suction cup that shamelessly mimics the Grabo power tool, Eric passionately argues that these kinds of practices are not just wrong—they're damaging the very fabric of American entrepreneurship. He's got some spicy hot takes on how these companies are undercutting quality and creativity, leaving inventors and small businesses in the dust. So grab a seat and some popcorn as we explore what's happening behind the scenes and why it should matter to you, the consumer. But wait, there's more! Eric also touches on some crucial recalls that you absolutely need to know about. From the Electrolux gas ranges that could pose a burn hazard to those sketchy Amazon Basics knives that might just slice your finger open instead of that camping apple, this segment is all about keeping you safe while you navigate the wild world of home improvement. He emphasizes the importance of staying informed and proactive, inviting listeners to check out the Consumer Product Safety Commission for the latest updates. It's a rollercoaster ride of information that mixes humor with urgency, making sure you don't just laugh but also learn a thing or two about protecting yourself and your wallet. As we wrap things up, Eric reflects on the broader picture of our remodeling and construction economy, which seems to be spiraling downward in his Portland backyard. He shares his frustration as he watches local tradespeople head for greener pastures in other states while commercial properties plummet in value. It's a stark reminder of the challenges facing our economy and the importance of supporting local businesses against the tide of foreign competition. Through witty banter and real talk, we're left pondering what the future holds for American innovation and craftsmanship. So tune in, buckle up, and let's navigate this wild ride together!Takeaways:In this episode, Eric dives into the alarming trend of Chinese companies, like Vivor, blatantly stealing American inventions, highlighting the urgent need for awareness about intellectual property theft. We discuss how small businesses are struggling against these big corporations that rip off their designs, leaving inventors feeling frustrated and powerless in the face of such blatant piracy.Eric shares some shocking examples of cheap knockoffs flooding the market, which may look similar to trusted brands but are often of much lower quality and could cause safety issues.Important recalls are on the table, including Electrolux gas ranges and Amazon Basics knives, reminding listeners to stay alert and check for recalls to ensure their safety. The state of the remodeling industry is rough, especially in places like Portland, where local builders are facing economic challenges and moving elsewhere for work opportunities. Finally, we touch on some oddball legislation in Oregon that's trying to ban animal processing, leaving us scratching our heads and wondering what in the world is going on.Links referenced in this episode:aroundthehouseonline.comaroundthehousehqCompanies mentioned in this episode:VivorGraboElectrolux GroupFrigidaireAmazonAmazon BasicsWagner Spray TechThanks for listening to Around the house if you want to hear more please subscribe so you get notified of the latest episode as it posts at https://around-the-house-with-e.captivate.fm/listenIf you want to join the Around the House Insider for access to the back catalog, Exclusive Content and a direct email to Eric G and access to the show early https://around-the-house-with-e.captivate.fm/support We love comments and we would love reviews on how this information has helped you on your house!
