It feels like forever! After the Mycelium Martian Dome, prototype 1,0 went up we needed some serious downtime to recoup. We left a panel growing at the Dressler's for over two weeks now so, we thought we better check-in! Out of its growing chamber, it was slowly drying. It felt only a day or two out and hyphae could be seen growing in valleys and crevices. I gently nestled the electrodes down into some hyphae clumps and started recording. About a minute in I gave the mycelium some water in places then we went and kicked back for a bit allowing it to do its thing. After thirty or so minutes we went back in and I made a connection between myself and the Hyphae. Not expecting anything to happen. Then 38 minutes in the Mycelium and I are making a connection. Thanks for listening! Nighty night.

What do Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze and Sam Rockwell have in common? No clue. Minki only spied on one of them. But apparently Minki and Tracy want to talk about all three of them for a while before kicking off the convo about this week’s movie. After some chatter about cut-off shirts, scientology and creepy roles that forever change the way you see actors, the hosts discuss this French Extremity film that came out with a barrage of dark and gruesome horror films in the early 2000’s which took torture porn (the ever popular sub-genre in America at the time) to a whole new level. Turns out, many actresses didn’t want to play the two lead roles in this film and it’s not hard to see why. As the director of this film noted, Martyrs and/or French Extremism is not about torture...it’s about pain. Hopefully it’s not painful for you to listen to these two retell this whole movie because it’s one of Tracy’s favorites. Au revoir!

Minki’s been prepping for his big sketch comedy performance and Tracy has been cleaning up dead bunnies from her backyard, but that doesn’t stop them for doing what they do best...watching horror movies, retelling and assessing them. In this episode, they “cut their teeth” on discussing allegories for rape by diving right into the mouth of this subversive, counter-culture film. With motifs of “the avenging angel,” “rape revenge” and “the special gift” prominently used, this dark comedy horror features a lead character who goes from being an abstinent teen to an empowered woman who uses a certain special power to fight off the numerous hostile males in her life. The hosts discuss how the director wanted to make this film, based quite literally on a ridiculous urban legend, after the New Puritanism trends following 9/11 and while Tracy enjoys this feminist horror, Minki thinks it might’ve been done better if directed by a woman! Sooooo, next week they’ll watch Consommé...a short horror, made by a woman, about a woman who also fights against male antagonists.

If every extra was named in the credits, this movie would include “Blurry Asian Kid #1” because our very own Minki Kim stars in this teenage slasher flick...which means he pops up in the background for a split second during a high school fight scene between a boyfriend and girlfriend. Don’t blink if you watch it to find him! But hey, the actress in the scene was Cybill Shepherd’s daughter and he was on set with the late great Brittany Murphy, and that’s pretty cool. So, this episode begins with a discussion about Minki’s brush with Hollywood and how Tracy “FALLS” all of the time. The two get into how this movie (which seems to be influenced by Psycho, Scream, and Prom Night), takes the typical horror trope of “only the virgins survive” and flips it on its head. The premise is promising but given the handful of ridiculous scenes and poor writing decisions, it’s no wonder why this movie was rejected by the MPAA for theatrical release and forced to go straight to VHS/DVD for distribution. In any case, the hosts enjoy talking about awkward sex-seeking teens who do their best to not get hacked up by a mystery murderer in this made up town in Virginia. Grab a cherry blossom lager and join this cherry poppin’ party. And don’t forget to email us and give us a movie recommendation!

While Tracy was away on travel in South Africa, Minki found a few horror movies either made by a South African, filmed in South Africa or about South Africa to watch upon her return. This movie, co-written and directed by South African Darrell Roodt, might be the worst movie ever to be associated with the country. And despite the fact that it includes Udo Kier, Coolio, Deebo from Friday, Bay Watch babe Erika Eleniak and Casper Van Dien on its roster, it might be the worst movie ever made! But, as we’ve learned, some of the worst movies make for the best conversations between the hosts. So, tune in and hear these two discuss the overt racism, sexism and cheesy-ass lines written into this mind-numbing script. Bram Stoker would smack someone silly over this rip-off which takes place in the future, in space...which provides the opportunity for Tracy to talk about her fear of space which Minki diagnoses as spacephobia. They also discuss her fear of fish and water, her recent trip to the highest bungee jump bridge in the world and Minki apparently has no fears. He only fears that someone else may watch this awful movie. The listener mail is top notch and Tracy pleads for more mail! So, write in.

The Enterprise Movie. Back in the Naughts, word around the Alpha Quadrant was that Archer and the crew of the NX-01 would inherit the Star Trek film franchise once the TNG crew finished their run. Before that could happen, however, events transpired that nixed not only the plans for Enterprise on the big screen, but Star Trek itself. While Enterprise never landed at the cineplex, we can always dream of what form that might have taken. In this episode of Warp Five we're joined by Tyler Johnson and Tommy Kraft to toss around ideas for the mythical Enterprise movie. From mining ENT for that key launching pad à la "Space Seed" or "The Best of Both Worlds" to enrolling Porthos in Section 31, we look all around the galaxy and then decide to go thatta way.
