Debates around equity and equality, especially concerning men and women and female representation, can become heated and divisive quickly. For a long time, female bodies have been perceived merely as male bodies with different reproductive organs. However, the differences go beyond that: 80% of people with autoimmune conditions are women, 66% of Alzheimer's disease patients are women, and symptoms of cardiovascular diseases present differently in women and men, among other disparities. These health issues significantly impact women's productivity. In today's episode, you will hear a recording from the Healthcare Business Women Ljubljana meetup focused on women's health. Joy Rios, founder of HIT Like a Girl Media joined the discussion on women's health and how the unique aspects of women's health are impacting digital health companies and businesses. While less than a quarter of CEOs in digital health companies are women, in femtech companies, 76% of founders, co-founders, and CEOs are women. Summary In this episode, Chelsea and Megan discuss their experiences of going back to work after having their babies. They share their challenges and tips for pumping at work, choosing the right breast pump and balancing work and family priorities. Key Things Discussed: Why "the system" sets moms up for struggle and how to combat it Willow vs. Elvie - pros and cons depending on your job Balancing work as a new mom if you're an independent contractor or self-employed Managing big emotions when you're separated from your kid Pressures and guilt surrounding breastfeeding and returning to work Reasonable accommodations in the workplace and tips on how to navigate The importance of finding supportive childcare and the benefits of shared parenting roles are also highlighted A funny story about Megan not being allowed to go into Disneyland How advocating for yourself in the workplace helps the mothers ahead of you Not feeling guilty about using formula and how it improves mental health Takeaways Pumping at work can be a major challenge for working moms, and finding the right breast pump is crucial. Balancing work and family priorities requires making accommodations and setting boundaries. Mothers should not feel guilty about their choices regarding breastfeeding and should do what works best for them and their babies. Finding supportive childcare is essential for working moms, and the quality of childcare can greatly impact a mother's peace of mind. The lack of support for mothers in the workplace is a systemic issue that needs to be addressed. Traveling with kids can be challenging due to the lack of support and accommodations in public spaces. Going back to work as a mother can be difficult, but advocating for oneself and suggesting accommodations can help create a more supportive environment. Prioritizing mental health and not feeling guilty about using formula can make the transition back to work easier. It is important to remind yourself that you are a good mom and to seek support from your community. On today's podcast, we're going to talk with Certified Nurse Midwife and Founder of The Vagina Chronicles, Aiyana Davison (She/Her), about her transition from hospital midwifery to a home birth practice. Aiyana is a Certified Nurse Midwife and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner currently practicing in Southern California. While she has worked for the past six years at a large hospital-based teaching facility, she recently started her own home birth practice and has plans to open a birth center. Aiyana has been featured on a wide variety of platforms including ESSENCE, Peanut, Elvie, Ovia Health, and Mama Glow. Aiyana uses her social media platforms and website, The Vagina Chronicles, to help bridge the knowledge gap in people understanding their bodies as well as taking charge of their health care. Aiyana focuses her work on healing long-standing historical trauma within the Black community by sharing and vocalizing stories and supporting Black people as they traverse the healthcare system. In this episode, we talk about the midwifery model of care in the United States and Aiyana's experiences working in a hospital-based setting, her home birth practice and her associations with a free standing birth center. Additionally, we talk about the excitement of new Black midwives entering the field, and, conversely, the associated apprehensions of Black midwives due to professional burnout and lack of interprofessional collaboration and community support.
