For this month's theme of AWKWARD LAUGHTER 2: THE FLOP we're discussing some comedies that didn't quite hit at the box office and it's no surprise that some of our selections have tumultuous histories during production and post-production. Today's discussion involves a bit of ego swinging in the editing room that left the creators involved with a bitter aftertaste. On top of that, studio executive shuffling led to this movie not even getting a theatrical release. Our “straight to VHS/DVD” discussion this month is a 2002 Troy Miller directed comedy that spun out of David Cross and Bob Odenkirk's influential HBO sketch show “Mr. Show”. Bob and David don't hold it in high regard in light of the fact that they were shut out of final edit. By some accounts they were relieved that “RUN RONNIE RUN!” didn't lose more money in the theaters with a proper marketing budget. The rest of America got what they got and they probably got it out of a bargain bin at a Hollywood Video in 2004. It was right up the alley of our younger, drunker, stoner selves but could this “cult classic” have been something more? Pretty easy to find. Here's a good link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v03ldhD7k-c and here's a little backstory on the fallout of the project from Bob Odenkirk in 2004: https://web.archive.org/web/20070607210342/http://www.bobanddavid.com/interviews.asp?artID=116 Subscribe to us on YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuJf3lkRI-BLUTsLI_ehOsg Contact us here: MOVIEHUMPERS@gmail.com Check our past & current film ratings here: https://moviehumpers.wordpress.com Hear us on podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6o6PSNJFGXJeENgqtPY4h7 Our OG podcast “Documenteers”: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/documenteers-the-documentary-podcast/id1321652249 Soundcloud feed: https://soundcloud.com/documenteers Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/culturewrought

"My face like a Mannequin" - Britney SpearsJoin BP, Coop and Justin as we discuss House of Wax, the 2005 slasher film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, in his feature directorial debut, and written by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes. The film stars Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray, Brian Van Holt in a dual role, Paris Hilton, Jared Padalecki, Jon Abrahams, and Robert Ri'chard. It is a loose remake of the 1953 film of the same name, itself a remake of the 1933 film Mystery of the Wax Museum, based on the story "The Wax Works" by Charles S. Belden. The film soundtrack features music by Deftones, My Chemical Romance, and Interpol.House of Wax premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released in United States theaters on May 6, 2005, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film grossed over $70 million worldwide and received mixed or average reviews from critics, who criticized its lack of originality, screenplay, and characters, but praised the performances and atmosphere.Follow the Complete Guide to Horror Movies podcast on our social channels below.↪ Facebook↪ TikTok↪ Twitter↪ Instagram↪ Subscribe to our YouTube channel↪ Tip us $5↪ Linktree↪ Website↪ Shop our Store!House of Wax was filmed at Warner Bros. Movie World, Australia. The Town set was constructed a few miles down the road, off Hollindale Road, in the Guanaba area.LawsuitIn January 2006, Village Roadshow Studios owners Village Theme Park Management and Warner Brothers Movie World Australia announced they were suing special effects expert David Fletcher and Wax Productions because of a fire on the set during production. The $7 million lawsuit alleges that Mr. Fletcher and Wax Productions were grossly negligent over the fire, which destroyed part of the Gold Coast's Warner Bros. Movie World studios. The alleged grounds of negligence included not having firefighters on stand-by and using timber props near a naked flame. The set where the fire broke out has now been demolished and is a field kept for Movie World for future projects.ReleaseOpening in 3,111 theaters, the film grossed $12 million in its opening weekend. House of Wax earned $70 million worldwide, $32 million of which came from North American receipts. House of Wax also earned $42 million in VHS/DVD rentals. A marketing campaign was launched to promote the film entitled "See Paris Die", to capitalize on the appearance of Paris Hilton in the film, as her casting had been met with disapproval by some horror fans. The campaign promised that viewers would "See Paris Die" in the film in a gruesome fashion and Hilton created shirts featuring the slogan. On July 13, 2021 a collector's edition Blu-Ray of House of Wax was released by Scream Factory in the US & Canada.Critical ReceptionOn Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 27% based on 160 reviews and the average rating is 4.29/10. The site's consensus reads, "Bearing little resemblance to the 1953 original, House of Wax is a formulaic but better-than-average teen slasher flick." On Metacritic, which uses an average of critics' reviews, the film has a weighted average score of 41 out of 100 based on 36 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "C+" on an A+ to F scale.#houseofwax #slasher #parishilton #horror #movie #death #horrorfilm #splatter #deathscene #blood #gore #scarymovie #horror #completeguidetohorror #horrormovie #scary #creepy #graphic #movieworld #australia #elishacuthbert #chadmichaelmurray #onetreehill #theoc #riverdale #britneyspears #mannequin

Recorded January 21, 2022 It's a lecture capture spectacular! The AV SuperFriends are joined by two guests, Michael Quinones and Raul Burriel, and with our powers combined… we are still unable to identify the perfect lecture capture system. Heck, we can't even really define lecture capture. But that doesn't stop us from walking through the earliest days of ITV systems, camcorders, VHS & DVD recording, and even famously abandoned systems like iTunes University (remember that?). We also review hardware encoders, capture software, local recordings, cloud delivery, and LMS integration. And, at the end, we all just use Zoom because that's what instructors know. Finally, Jamie shares a clever method for bootstrapping light video production switchers into his classroom systems. Despite everyone else's reservations, it is something worth considering. There's lots of important news in the film world this week that the gang is going to tackle and break down for you, many of which have implications for the future of the art of filmmaking.  In this episode, we talk about... How Paramount is restructuring - the Chairman and CEO is being replaced. The new CEO has an interesting story, having ascended from being a child actor in the 90s to a director, to this current position. How Paramount has joined “The Streaming Wars” and is trying to create more content for their digital platform to get more viewers subscribed. Why we might see a lot of reboots of older Paramount movies. Whether the Streaming Wars are the death of art or a great way to get more movies and shows produced. Disney has announced they're going back to theaters! This is following them releasing full-length movies on Disney+ for an upcharge during the pandemic. How long you used to have to wait for a new movie to come out on VHS/DVD versus the new model, where Disney can release a movie in the theater and then on their streaming service about 45 days later. Canon has rolled out a new camera called the R3 which is mostly a stills camera and, while it may not be the highest resolution camera on the market, it's great for filmmakers. This camera's amazing technology of scanning your retina in the viewfinder to try to keep in focus whatever you're looking at and how this feature has upsides and downsides. And, though the R-rating may've kept some away, the buddy comedy's life on VHS/DVD gained it a ton of new fans, birthed a top-selling soundtrack, and inspired many Halloween costumes. Avi Wachtfogel, Engineering Fellow and Senior Director of Security Strategy at Synamedia, is just the person to cover the evolution of media content security and share the latest threats and best strategies for keeping content secure.    The conversation covers: •  Macrovision •  VHS + DVD •  Torrenting and peer-to-peer sharing •  BitTorrent •  VOD •  Over-the-top (OTT) •  Hulu, YouTube, HBO Max, Netflix, etc. •  Credential fraud •  Deep fakes •  Content protection and service protection •  Watermarking •  Take down notices ... and more  Don’t miss it!   Here are some key take-aways: •  With video being distributed more broadly and going straight to streaming, protecting and securing media content has become even more challenging.  •  Hardware and software technologies have been used on the service protection side to solve the problem of bootleg cable and other content security concerns of the 90s and 2000s.  •  Over the top (OTT) refers to the distribution of video content over a high-speed Internet connection. This covers streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, etc.  •  It’s relatively simple to start an OTT service, so it’s more important than ever to keep media content protected against piracy. If pirates get access to the content, they can re-stream/distribute it.  •  Pirates also create distribution chains, selling to other pirates who then sell to consumers. You see this often with live events. There are even salesmen who go door-to-door selling these IPTV services. Content consumers are often confused about whether the content they’re getting is legal or not.  •  Licensing agreements that limit when and where content can be consumed can actually drive consumers to seek out pirate streaming sites. •  Credential fraud allows people to access content without legally subscribing to a streaming service. This is another way service providers lose money. •  Using encryption to keep OTT video content secure is a tricky thing. You need to allow those with the device to access the content, but pirates may also be accessing the content legitimately. Protecting that content using encryption is not as straightforward as it is with protecting personal info against external attacks. •  The line between content protection and service protection blurs once the content is distributed.  •  The phases of protection are Protect, Detect, and Disrupt. Protecting won’t always be possible, Detecting involves figuring out who’s distributing the content and where and how they’re distributing it, and Disrupting is taking action and putting a stop to that distribution.   •  A major challenge with the streaming industry is that everything is so fragmented, and this fragmentation actually encourages piracy. After all, if we’re already subscribed to dozens of services and then a new service creates content we want, where do we draw the line? When do we start seeking that content elsewhere? At some point, these services will have to work together. •  If you find that your own content is being distributed on YouTube, Facebook, or on search engines illegally, you can approach the platform. They’re required to take down those illegal links.  •  The challenge of countering piracy requires technological means (like watermarking and tracking pirate services), as well as legal means (like Take Down notices), and a group effort to make it easier for legal content to be consumed than it is for illegal content to be consumed.    Some interesting quotes from today’s episode: “Because the technologies are out there that make it easy to start a [OTT] service, pirates can do the same. And it's just a matter of having access to the content… If you have any device that outputs content -- that can be a set-top box, that can be a PC -- and that content is being output, it can be captured, whether through the HTMI port, or using the screen grabbing software, or even, an extreme case of just taking a camera and having it opposite the monitor. You can capture that content. And once you can capture that content, you can re-stream it.”   “One pirate will take a stream, a live stream, say of a sports event, and then they will sell that on to other pirates. So, you have a whole distribution chain and then those pirates will sell it on directly to consumers. And there’ll be resellers who are taking that content and selling it further and further along. There’s a lot of confusion very often among customers actually, as to what they're actually getting -- whether it's legal or not.”   “A lot of these services, they call them IPTV services. We've seen in some countries, there will actually be a salesman going door to door. They'll knock on the door and I'll say, you know, ‘For $10 a month, would you like access to these 200 channels? We’ll set it up for you.’ They'll come in, they'll take a box of some sort and go plug it into your TV, and they'll set you up and set up the billing. Some of these guys have got 24/7 support -- pick up the phone and you have support -- and they look really legitimate. And then very often the customers themselves can't tell whether they're signing up for legitimate service or not.”    “Very often these kinds of [licensing] arrangements actually drive consumers to use pirate services… We're actually seeing that kind of tendency. People are looking for content. There's actually a rise in the amount of content that's being viewed over Torrents these days because of these kinds of limitations.”   “You can go on the dark web -- you can buy a set of credentials for a variety of streaming services and pay a lot less for those than you would if you were subscribing legally. And that’s also a major problem for the service providers today. There's a lot of money that they're losing to those kinds of attacks.”   “In the case of video, it's a much more difficult problem because you're trying to protect the content on the device from the person who's holding the device. The pirate actually has a legitimate device with the content on it. And obviously you want a legitimate user to be able to view the content.”   “There are different ways of capturing that content and then re-encoding. Today, just encrypting the content is really not enough.”   “Whether it's Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix -- these new services are appearing every other day. And we all talk about the ‘streaming wars,’ but at some point they're going to have to recognize that they need to sort of get together and solve, what is really going to be a piracy problem. Because people are going looking for the content. People aren't going to sign up for ten different services. And if they don't happen to be subscribed to the particular service where there's content that they want, they're going to go look for it on Torrents. And so, they're going to have to find some way to work together after this fragmentation happens to sort of re-aggregate the content.”   “Today, if you sign up for Spotify or Apple Music or Amazon, you're paying one monthly fee… You don't care what the label is behind the music. You’ve got access to all the music you could want. And when the video industry reaches a point where they make it easier to access content legally than it is to access it illegally, they will have largely solved a lot of the problems that they're seeing today.”

And here's where it gets really interesting. In each episode, a soothing voice will dare you to complete small, collaborative acts… in the real world. Trippy, right? And super interesting. Visit SYGNYL.com, S-Y-G-N-Y-L dot com to check it out, and like I said, I'll play a clip for you at the end of this show. Let's get into it: 1994's R-rated Gothic romance slash revenge flick, The Crow.   The Crow came out in 1994, was very Goth, very Occult, and had a super 90s soundtrack—The Cure, Stone Temple Pilots, RATM, Violent Femmes, NIN—but in many ways, it was far ahead of its time. It made use of face-replacement technology that, prior to The Crow's release, had only been used in Jurassic Park. It was a box office success, taking the #1 spot opening weekend. But it gained even more success once it went to VHS/DVD. And, of course, comic book films were a rarity in that time. Do you think The Crow still stands the test of time? What hasn't aged well with The Crow?   There were a ton of accidents and incidents that happened behind the scenes in The Crow, so much so many say the film was cursed. Various cast and crew members suffered a variety of injuries and of course there was Brandon Lee's tragic on-set death by a faulty prop gun. Do you think the behind-the-scenes tragedies led to The Crow's success or would it have stood on its own?   The Crow is rated R. And it truly lived up to that rating—with graphic content. Today we wonder if comic book movies should be rated R, or if they should be made with a broader and younger audience in mind. But The Crow gave no Fs about its R rating. What has changed in the comic book world and society?   We often talk about the “why” of a character. The catalyst that starts the protagonist on the hero's journey. For The Crow, this catalyst is built off “fridging,” which is a term for a comic book trope where the death of a female character serves as a catalyst for the hero's journey. Does it work in The Crow? Why or why not? (Before we dive in, I think it's important to point out that James O'Barr, author and artist of The Crow comic book series, lost his fiancé in a car accident with a drunk driver.)   Is The Crow (Eric Draven) a hero, a villain, an antihero, or something else entirely? Does it work? What makes it work?   The Crow centers on bringing a soul back to “make things right.” There's a whole genre of films dedicated to revenge fantasies—John Wick, The Crow, a bunch of B-movie Bruce Willis movies. These are essentially a blend of grief fulfillment and the quest for justice. What makes this a compelling concept? And, for The Crow, what would justice actually look like? Does revenge play a role in justice at all?   The Crow is a Goth movie. What does it mean to be Goth and what attracts people to Goth culture? What do Goth fans crave that society isn't giving them?   The Crow reboot has been put on hold indefinitely. Is it worth remaking considering how underwhelming the sequels have been? And who would you cast in The Crow?   That's it for today's show! Don't forget to subscribe to The Story Geeks podcast on YouTube or your preferred podcast provider. And make sure you check out Death of a Bounty Hunter, the book I co-wrote, AND the new participatory-arts podcast, SYGNYL. The 5 Most Common Mistakes You're Making With Your Cold Emails (and How to Fix Them)

Optimize Yourself

[Authors note: The following is Part 2 of my “Writing Great Outreach Emails” series. If you’d like to master the art of email outreach and download all 3 parts (including a BONUS checklist to help you craft your next message), Click here to download ‘The Insider’s Guide to Writing Great Outreach Emails’.] I get it. Who’s not busy? I’m busy. We’re all busy. Everybody’s busy. But other people being busy isn’t a valid excuse for you not getting any responses to your cold outreach messages. Most likely the lack of response has nothing to do with the recipient being busy and everything to do with making one (or more) of the most common mistakes I see people making when sending cold outreach emails. Having both sent and received thousands of outreach emails in my career, I have a good sense of what works and what doesn’t. Early in my career as a trailer editor I was tasked with reviewing hundreds of cold submissions from other trailer editors so we could build our roster of freelancers (which included sifting through hundreds of résumés and multiple boxes of VHS & DVD demo reels...yes I just aged myself there). Later in my career I started a boutique post-production marketing agency and hired multiple employees via cold job listings (after sifting through thousands of emails for each one). And now having put myself out there very publicly with my website and podcast, I receive between 5-10 solicitation PER DAY from people who want to sell me their products, get on my podcast, put links on my website, have me pass along their résumé, or have coffee and “pick my brain.” Needless to say, I know what outreach messages look like from the perspective of the person receiving them. And the vast majority are just plain bad. Before identifying the most common mistakes and breaking down why most outreach emails fail to receive a response, however, it’s imperative that you put yourself in the seat of the person whos’ about to receive your message. This is a process I like to call: Crawling Into the Brain of Your Recipient Picture in your mind right now a person you reached out to recently. Maybe it’s a famous editor, director, producer, bestselling author, or even a studio executive. Imagine them in their daily work environment. Imagine the amount of requests put upon them for their time, their opinions, and their expertise. Imagine them being so busy they have to frantically eat lunch every day at their workstation. Now imagine their email inbox. While it may seem nearly impossible to compete for a busy person’s valuable attention given how little they have available, it is possible to stand out amongst the noise if you construct your outreach message correctly and you go out of your way to provide value to this person (more on providing value in my ‘Insider’s Guide to Writing Great Outreach Emails’). But because “providing value” is an elusive concept, and because outreach can be a tedious, time-consuming, and slow process, most people opt for the easy route instead as you’ll see below. Here are the five most common mistakes I see people making with their cold outreach messages. Mistake #1: Making it all about YOU It’s common to think that the best way to get the attention of an expert, a potential mentor, or someone who can open that oh-so-elusive door to the next major stage of your career is to sell yourself and include every relevant piece of information that will set you apart from your competitors (and of course don’t forget to attach your resume and a link to your website!). But you’ve lost the game immediately if you are making the message all about you and your own needs. From your perspective you might be thinking “This is my one shot!” so you must share all of your credits, your experience, your education, and it’s imperative that you impress them with your uncanny ability to interpret the deeper meaning of their creative choices such that it reads like a graduate film school thesis. But from their perspective? A busy person will be just fine ignoring your email. It is not their responsibility to respond to your message. It is your responsibility to earn their response. The fix: Stop thinking that this email is your only shot to sell yourself. The purpose of your first outreach message is not to land a job, or an interview, or a lunch meeting, or a phone call, or a shadowing opportunity. The purpose of your first outreach email is simply to get a response and start the conversation. Mistake #2: Your message isn’t personal and reads like a template (or even worse is a group message) I know how tempting it is to be as efficient as possible with the limited amount of time you have to network. We all love our Macro keyboard commands that get us from 8 keystrokes to 2 keystrokes...but outreach messages are NOT the place to focus on efficiency. Sending 500 generic messages with a 1% response rate gets you 5 responses...and they’ll be tepid at best. Sending 10 highly personalized, thoughtful, and hand-crafted messages to the right people with a 70% response rate gets you 7 responses...all of which have the potential to lead to a genuine relationship. Stop hunting with a shotgun and start hunting with a sniper rifle. Here’s an example of a common template message I’ll receive from acquaintances or former colleagues: First of all...how do I know this is a template email? Because they used the wrong name! Yes they took the time to personalize the first sentence, but anyone with Google or IMDb can find out in 2 minutes or less what I’ve been working on. For context, this is an acquaintance I know personally whom I’ve met at several past networking events, and he’s a great guy. I truly want him to succeed. But we’ve never worked together, so I don’t feel comfortable blankly forwarding his résumé for a job without knowing more about his job performance firsthand. And furthermore I only hear from him when he’s unemployed. Had he instead watched an episode or two of Cobra Kai or listened to a recent episode of my podcast and commented on something that inspired him, I absolutely 100% would respond. But in this case it’s tough to make the time for coffee or lunch when this technically was written for someone else and not me. Here’s an example of the type of group emails I get ALL. THE. TIME. If I don’t know this person, or even if I’ve met them casually but not worked with them before, once again why would I refer them? Vouching for someone puts my reputation on the line. And if I do know this person or I’ve worked with them in the past...why haven’t they made the effort to reach out to me directly?!?!?! The fix: When you reach out to people, ditch the templates, stop worrying about the quantity of messages you can get out into the world and instead focus on the quality of your messages. Demonstrate that you have clearly done your homework. Identify something unique about their work, quote something they said in an interview or panel, mention an obscure reference to a project they worked on twenty years ago that you love. Send them a link to an article that they’d find helpful and valuable. Make it clear that you’ve invested considerable time and energy into drafting a one-of-a-kind outreach message meant just for them. This will make them think, “This was nice of them. At the very least I should probably read the rest of their message.” Mistake #3: You get too personal (and send your life story) Yes yes, I realize I just told you NOT to send a template and instead take the time to craft a personal message. But please don’t send your life story. At best you have two minutes (or less) to get this person’s attention AND have them respond before they are onto other messages and urgent matters in their life. Your life story will have to wait for another conversation. Here’s the perfect example of a very personal, heartfelt message that is clearly not a template composed just for me (that is still sitting in my inbox 3 months later). I still have every intention of responding to this person...eventually. Their heart is in the right place and they’ve clearly done their homework on me, but alas because the email is incredibly long, detailed, and personal, and because crafting an equally thoughtful response will most likely take me 30 minutes or more, this will continue to sit on my pile of messages that deserve a response but just don’t fit on my calendar. The fix: Be brief, but also be specific. In no more than two quick paragraphs you need to make the following two things clear: Who are you? And what do you want from this person? Connect the dots for them so they understand where you are on your career path and what you have in common with this person. Share a few relevant details...then get to your ‘ask.’ If done right, you’ll have all the time in the world to share your life story when you meet for lunch. Mistake #4: You haven’t made it abundantly clear how this person can help you (or why they should at all) I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told by someone desperately struggling in Hollywood, “Nobody in this business wants to help me.” Think for a second about where you are right now in your career (I don’t care if you’re the head of Amazon post-production or an intern). Now imagine someone reaching out to you with a similar backstory, similar challenges, and facing the same obstacles that you perhaps overcame just a few years ago to get where you are today. If this person seems genuine and hard working with good intentions, wouldn’t you want to help them succeed? I’ll bet you’d go out of your way to help them! Why? Because they remind you of yourself at that point in your life. Now imagine receiving a message like this instead: No doubt this person has good intentions, but there’s only one way I can help them: Giving them a job (or referring them). Except I don’t know anything about this person. At all. Why in the world would I consider them for an upcoming job opportunity or refer them if I know NOTHING about them or their past experience? I want to help people, but sorry. This is an instant ‘Delete.’ Had this person instead introduced themselves, briefly illustrated where they are now in their career journey and where they hope to be someday, and then made it clear where specifically they require assistance to take the next small step, I’d bend over backwards to help them. It’s not that people don’t want to help you. It’s that you haven’t made it clear enough how they can help you. The fix: Make it clear how you are similar to the person you’re reaching out to. Demonstrate you’ve done your homework so this person immediately understands why they are the right fit to receive your message and provide you some assistance. Find common ground. Increase familiarity so you don’t come off as another generic person hungry for a job. Then illustrate very specifically how this person can help you with a clear ‘ask.’ (more on that next) Mistake #5: Your questions requires a lengthy response (or you’re asking too many) At this point you’ve stopped selling yourself, you’ve ditched the templates, and your message is short and concise. And you’ve also made it clear who you are, what you want, and where you need help. Now it’s time for the ‘ask.’ This is where most people blow it. Once again, crawl into the brain of the recipient and review your questions: Are they easy to respond to? Can they respond quickly? Have you asked too many questions? Here’s a message that’s easy to respond to, doesn’t ask too many questions, and one can certainly respond to quickly, no? If your first cold  ‘ask’ forces someone to open their calendar, you’ve already lost. Yes this message is easy to respond to...but unfortunately the answer will probably be no - especially if it requires scheduling time in someone’s day they don’t even have for themselves. And instead of asking someone if you can “pick their brain” (i.e. extract years of their time and expertise for free) what if instead you simply “asked for their advice” to a very specific challenge? Furthermore, no matter how brilliant your questions are (or how smart you think they make you look), if they aren’t easy to answer in 2 minutes or less, you’ll once again be filed to the “Someday” pile at best. Here’s an example of how NOT to ask questions in your cold outreach: Every single one of these is a great question...and each is a wonderful topic of conversation over lunch or a meet-and-greet phone call. And doing a good job of answering every single one of these questions would take FOR. EV. ER. The fix: Make your ‘ask’ as simple as possible. Don’t ask more than one or two simple questions (you can always follow up and go into more detail later). Once again, the objective of your first cold outreach message is not to land a job or mentorship or lunch meeting. Your objective is to begin the conversation and earn a response. It really is that simple. Step Outside Your Networking Comfort Zone I say this with zero hyperbole: Your career depends on your ability to write compelling and engaging cold emails. I get that as an introvert putting yourself out there to people you admire and want to work with is terrifying. But if you’re tired of showing up to networking events and walking away empty-handed because you didn’t meet anyone new, or the people you did meet frankly can’t help you, then cold outreach is the most important soft skill you must master if you’re seeking advice about the next steps in your career, you’re looking for mentorship, or you’ve identified a potential dream project you’d love to be a part of. Plus you can do it from home in your pajamas.

Zach & Brandon take a look back at the racing flick that started it all! They discuss the franchise roots as well as how the series evolved since its simple inception. What began as some street racers stealing VHS/ DVD combo players would eventually spiral out of control and into superhero/ super-spy territory. But they're taking it back to the sweaty, Limp Bizkit filled year of 2001 to get into the Diesel/ Walker bromance, Vince's toxic masculinity and of course that sweet NOS CGI!

If every extra was named in the credits, this movie would include “Blurry Asian Kid #1” because our very own Minki Kim stars in this teenage slasher flick...which means he pops up in the background for a split second during a high school fight scene between a boyfriend and girlfriend. Don’t blink if you watch it to find him! But hey, the actress in the scene was Cybill Shepherd’s daughter and he was on set with the late great Brittany Murphy, and that’s pretty cool. So, this episode begins with a discussion about Minki’s brush with Hollywood and how Tracy “FALLS” all of the time. The two get into how this movie (which seems to be influenced by Psycho, Scream, and Prom Night), takes the typical horror trope of “only the virgins survive” and flips it on its head. The premise is promising but given the handful of ridiculous scenes and poor writing decisions, it’s no wonder why this movie was rejected by the MPAA for theatrical release and forced to go straight to VHS/DVD for distribution. In any case, the hosts enjoy talking about awkward sex-seeking teens who do their best to not get hacked up by a mystery murderer in this made up town in Virginia. Grab a cherry blossom lager and join this cherry poppin’ party. And don’t forget to email us and give us a movie recommendation!
