Kyla Cobbler is not her real name, but what is real are the laughs we had with her in this episode. She told us how lying to Italian men on dating apps led to her new name and how she went from hating school to getting head hunted by Dolce & Gabbana and is now living the dream now working as a comedian. It's a chaotic episode that goes from Azealia Banks to Coolio's demands for sparkling water to colourful farts all before we could get the introduction done.Kyla's a fan of swimming in the nip and almost has Calvin convinced until she admits she'd never do it at home in Ireland. We spoke about emigrating and how living as an Irish person abroad changes your perspective. And Kyla opened up on her realisation that she was drinking too much and how she's changed her relationship with alcohol.Sponsored by FBT Gyms.
This week I am joined by comedian Parker Tighe. Parker tells us about growing up in Las Vegas, being a tour guide at the Grand Canyon, using a fake ID to start doing stand up comedy, and moving to New York.Great EX Drinking Buddy stories this week: Parker has a story about doing WAY too much acid during an earthquake, tunnel parties in Vegas, smoking weed with Coolio, and so much more.Find everything for Parker on his LINKTREEFind everything for me through the LINKTREE
Weird Al Yankovic emerged from the wild and wacky underground music scene of the 1970s and 1980s to become one of the world's most successful musical-comedy artists. Initially breaking into the mainstream with his parodies of mega-hit pop songs by Michael Jackson, Madonna, Nirvana, Coolio, and more, Yankovic has had astonishing pop-culture staying power. His lane may be comedy, but the facts are no joke: five Grammy Awards, eight Top 20 albums, and Top 40 singles in four consecutive decades. And the story isn't over yet; in 2025, Weird Al will head back on the road for his Bigger & Weirder Tour. So join us for this April Fool's Day Special as the Great Pop Culture Debate considers the Best Weird Al Song. Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Jim Czadzeck, Jonny Minogue, and Karissa Kloss as they discuss 16 of Weird Al's most notable tracks. Batman Forever, Sidste Time, Heat, Tank Girl, Desperado, Se7en, Friday og Waiting To Exhale. Playliste: Björk – Army of me Diana King – Shy guy Bryan Adams – Have you ever really loved a woman PJ Harvey – Down by the water Dr. Dre – Keep their heads ringin' U2 – Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me Seal – Kiss from a rose Vanessa Williams – Colors of the wind Søs Fenger – Sidste time Jill Sobule – Supermodel Coolio feat. L.V. – Gangsta's paradise Los Lobos & Antonio Banderas – Canción del Mariachi (Morena de Mi Corazón) David Bowie – The hearts filthy lesson No Doubt – You can do it Tina Turner – Goldeneye Randy Newman – You've got a friend in me Moby – God moving over the face of the waters Whitney Houston – Exhale (Shoop shoop)

On this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're jumping in our musical memory machine and going back 30 years to 1995. Rock and roll still ruled the charts and alternative music was still a thing. We got great albums from Alice in Chains, No Doubt, Mad Season, Oasis, Ozzy, and White Zombie. SIlverchair, the Foo Fighters, the Deftones, Jewel, Radiohead, Alanis Morissette, and Garbage all released their debut albums. TLC warned us against chasing Waterfalls. Coolio was living in a gangsta's paradise, and groups also released a handful of songs that we still hear today: Hey Man Nice Shot, Peaches, and those songs by Spacehog, Better Than Ezra, Elastica. Several members of the Wu Tang Clan released solo albums. R&B kinda sucked with a few exceptions. And there was weird stuff like the Macarena, Scatman John, and Cotton Eye Joe were on the radio. We're going cover as much of it as we can in this throwback episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, so let's hit it. Episode Playlist & Other Stuff Check out our episode playlist here. Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise is a socially conscious track from his critically acclaimed 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life. Produced by Wonder himself, the song features a unique orchestration with a choir and a haunting melody driven by synthesizers. It tackles themes of social injustice and fleeting dreams, making it one of Wonder's most politically charged songs. The track gained further recognition when Coolio famously interpolated it for his 1995 hit Gangsta's Paradise, earning Grammy success. Bow Wow's Like You, featuring Ciara, was released in 2005 as part of his fourth studio album Wanted. Produced by Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox, the song is a smooth R&B/hip-hop ballad detailing a deep romantic connection. It became a major hit, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. The track helped cement Bow Wow's transition from a child star to a serious artist in the industry. The story of Coolio is... a lot. But you know what isn't a lot? The variety in his discography once the 00s came around! Tracks appearing in more than one body of work and derivative tropes plaguing that weird decade would severely taint his first three albums that were bursting with personality and obviously "Gangster's Paradise". Lucky for him, it didn't.TIMESTAMPS:Weekly Music Roundup - (2:02)Ben:Charlie:Diani - DeionVic Spencer - Being The Bigger Person Sucks Iman Europe - MoneymorphosisBarney Artist & Miles Singleton - Strangers All AroundAlici - SouvenirTopic Intro/Ben's Research House - (7:38)It Takes a Thief - (13:43)Gangsta's Paradise - (21:58)My Soul - (31:22)Coolio.com - (38:32)El Cool Magnifico - (42:23)The Return of the Gangsta - (45:35)Steal Hear - (50:12)Lighter Note - (1:00:42)Thanks for listening. Programleder: Sivert MoeSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/anger. "There are no victims in this classroom!" Michelle Pfieffer is a whitefish out of water in the 1995 hit, Dangerous Minds. Pfieffer plays Louanne Johnson, an ex-marine divorcee down on her luck. Her only prospect, it seems, is to attempt to teach a gaggle of "passionate" high school kids, most of whom happen to be (gasp!) teenagers of color. Cue "Gangsta's Paradise"! Yes, back in the 90s, mainstream films were fairly black-and-white. But now, decades later, does this white savior storyline get a pass because it's based on a true story? Is Michelle the mousiest of ex-Marines ever? And why do some of these kids look 30? The Old Roommates head to the principal's office and give all the drama a rewatch through their middle-aged lens. We discuss the new characters, setting the film in New York, pizza as character motivation, Joseph Quinn looking like RDJ, the cat's lack of hissing in the film, murky water, and the potential benefits of having the AQP aliens around! All this, plus: The response to PotatoGate, teaching someone how to whistle, high-speed car chases, the age-related lie Coolio told in 'Gangsta's Paradise' & a disturbing fact about hedgehogs. ———————————————————— To see images of the stuff discussed, look at your device's screen while listening! In this episode of Seeing Them Live, hosts Charles and Doug welcome Jim, known as the Podcast Sherpa and host of Too Many Podcasts, a podcast dedicated to exploring other podcasts. Jim shares his unique experiences attending various concerts, beginning with his first concert in 1980, where he saw The Police at Madison Square Garden during their Zenyatta Mondatta tour. He reminisces about the electrifying atmosphere and how the concert left a lasting impression on him as a high school student. The discussion also touches on other memorable shows, including Tina Turner's powerful performance as the opening act for Lionel Richie in 1984, where her high-energy stage presence captivated the audience. Jim also recalls seeing Elton John at Madison Square Garden during the Leather Jackets tour in 1986 and dispels a rumor about the singer allegedly assaulting a fan. He goes on to describe the experience of attending Billy Joel's record-setting 12 Gardens residency at Madison Square Garden, which also happened to be his wife's first concert, highlighting the shared joy of live music. The conversation takes a humorous turn as Jim recounts some lighter concert memories, including a prank involving "pre-concert mooing" at a Joan Jett concert in 1983 and a surprising encounter at a Samantha Fox show in 1989. Charles and Doug also share their own concert anecdotes, with Doug emphasizing the consistent quality of Billy Joel's performances and Charles recalling a chaotic food fight during a Joan Jett set at a Police concert. The episode is filled with entertaining stories and insights, reflecting the hosts' and guest's deep appreciation for live music and the unforgettable moments that concerts create.BANDS: Bare Naked Ladies, Billy Joel, Clint Black, Coolio, Elton John, Joan Jett, Lionel Richie, Prince, Samantha Fox, Sheila E, The Police, Tina Turner, Wynonna Judd.VENUES: Jones Beach, Madison Square Garden, Manchester Apollo, Orpheum Capitol Theater, The Marquee Club. Deesha and Kiese welcome acclaimed writer, poet, and cultural critic Hanif Abdurraqib, author of There's Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension. They talk about music—the significance of music to their youth and their lives now, their listening practices, and Abdurraqib's process of creating playlists. They also discuss basketball and what is so special, so singular, about Columbus in terms of high school basketball. Deesha admits how she's had to challenge her own notions of Ohio in regards to sports and to politics, and Abdurraqib talks about the joys and the frustrations of place, of community, and of notions of home.
