Today on the 5: In memory of the magnificent actor Udo Kier, Lando selected 1973's Flesh For Frankenstein as one of our commentary films. The film is a well known trash classic, but the elements that created that notoriety were not enough to sustain the movie for me.

On this episode of the Anthony On Air Podcast, we're tearing into the week's headlines like a pack of ravenous raccoons — so buckle up.First, the royal drama nobody asked for: Meghan Markle allegedly “caught stealing” (yes, really) — we dig into what this means, why it's resurfacing now, and what it says about celebrity, entitlement, and the 24/7 media garbage grinder. Then we shift gears to a darker corner: the Department of Justice reportedly trying to convene a grand jury over the Jeffrey Epstein case (again) — we break down what's new, what's repeating, and why it still matters.Next up: the laugh riot you didn't know you needed — the ranking (and controversy) of the Top 500 comedians. Who cracked the list, who got snubbed, and which jokes aged like milk. And because the world refuses to stop spinning: we're tracking a roster of bizarre, sad, and downright surreal side stories — from the legendary actor Udo Kier passing at 81, to Jimmy Cliff's death, to Usha Vance offering the “my-ring-was-in-the-dishwasher” excuse, to the mysterious cruise-ship death of Anna Kepner. All this while the oddly-named Department of Government Efficiency (yes, DOGE) quietly disappears/pulverizes itself. If you like your news with a little irreverence, a lot of skepticism, and zero sugar-coating — you're in the right place.Get more AoA and become a member to get exclusive access to perks:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOfx0OFE-uMTmJXGPpP7elQ/joinGet Erin C's book here: https://amzn.to/3ITDoO7Get Merch here - https://bit.ly/AnthonyMerchSubscribe to the Anthony On Air Podcast here:Facebook - https://bit.ly/AntOnAirFBYouTube - https://bit.ly/AntOnAirYTApple Podcast - https://bit.ly/AntOnAirAppleSpotify - https://bit.ly/AntOnAirSpotTwitter - https://bit.ly/AntOnAirTwitterInstagram - https://bit.ly/AntOnAirInstaTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@anthonyonairpodDiscord - https://discord.gg/78V469aV22Get more at https://www.AnthonyOnAir.com

E. Elias Merhige's Shadow of the Vampire Sometimes it's simply a thrill to watch one your favorite actors let loose and have a great time. F.W. Murnau's 1922 Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is widely - and deservedly - considered one of the greatest films of all time. A mythology has formed around the making of the film including the idea that its star, Max Shreck, was an actual vampire. With this springboard, writer Steven Katz and director E. Elias Merhige's fashion an exciting, inventive, and thrilling historical re-telling of the making of Murnau's film. With a great supporting cast including Cary Elwes, Eddie Izzard, Udo Kier, and Catherine McCormack as actors and crew of Nosferatu. However the film belongs solely to a pair of unhinged and clearly fun performances from John Malkovich as Murnau, and (in an Academy Award nominated performance) Willem Dafoe as Schreck. For fans of Murnau's classic, silent films, and vampire stories, Shadow of the Vampire is a real treasure. Take a listen to see if you agree. Welcome back to Not A Bomb! —the podcast where we resurrect cinema's most infamous box office disasters and ask the burning question: was it really that bad? We're celebrating five years of cinematic redemption, and our Spooktacular series continues with a deep dive into one of the internet's earliest horror nightmares. This week, Troy and Brad boot up their dial-up modems and log into Feardotcom, the 2002 techno-horror thriller that tried to make the web scary before social media did. Feardotcom spins a tale of cursed clicks, haunted bandwidth, and a website that kills its visitors within 48 hours. That's right—before The Ring made VHS tapes deadly, Feardotcom asked what happens when your browser history becomes your obituary. Troy and Brad explore the film's troubled production, its critical drubbing, and why it earned the dreaded “F” CinemaScore. But is there something worth salvaging in this digital disaster? Could Feardotcom be a misunderstood relic of early internet anxiety? Or is it just a glitch in the horror matrix?Feardotcom is directed by William Malone and stars Stephen Dorff, Natascha McElhone, Stephen Rea, Udo Kier, and Amelia Curtis. To celebrate the last 25 years of film, the Not A Bomb podcast is compiling a Top 25 list from the Not A Bomb community. Pamela Anderson starring films. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss The Last Showgirl (2024) and Barb Wire (1996). We begin by discussing Barb Wire and showering it with praise (excuse the pun). We celebrate the 90s-ness of the film. We talk about all the homages and connections we noticed in Barb Wire, including Casablanca (1942), Batman Forever (1995), Alien 3 (1992), Mad Max (1979), Romeo + Juliet (1996), Candyman (1992), Strange Days (1995), and Total Recall (1990). We praise the cast, including Xander Berkeley, Udo Kier and Temuera Morrison. We discuss the production values of Barb Wire, including the visual effects, action, cinematography and other production values. Our conversation explores the criticism of Barb Wire and how the tastes of audiences shifted over the 90s, making connections to Waterworld (1995), Cutthroat Island (1995), Hook (1991) and Charlie's Angels (2000). We move our discussion to The Last Showgirl, directed by Gia Coppola. We talk about the strength of the performances from Pamela Anderson, Brenda Song, Dave Bautista, Billie Lourd and Jamie Lee Curtis. We unpack the script, the tone, the direction and the ultimate aim of the film, with differing reactions from Sarah, William and Jeremy.
Welcome back to Not A Bomb podcast, the show where we tackle cinema's biggest box office failures and decide if they deserve a second chance. This week, Brad and Troy dive into one of the biggest box office flops of 1996, Barb Wire. In the '90s, Pamela Anderson was riding high on her success with Baywatch and grabbing headlines due to her high-profile marriage to Tommy Lee. She also took on a role in a film based on a Dark Horse Comics character, which ended up being an unofficial remake of Casablanca. The experiment didn't go over well. Critics slammed the movie, and audiences stayed away from Pamela's action-packed, face-kicking, gun-slinging performance. But is the film really as bad as the critics say? Does Barbara "Barb Wire" Kopetski deserve a second chance with today's audiences? Download the latest episode and find out!Special thanks to Jose from Watch Skip Plus for joing the conversation. As usual, Jose brings his unique take on this box office bomb. Cooper and Nolan are hoping for a miracle this week, when they cover SURVIVING CHRISTMAS! Holiday cheer is in short supply in this early 2000s comedy, which came at a low point in star Ben Affleck's career. But maybe - just maybe - an implausible romantic subplot, jokes about masturbation, and a cameo appearance from Udo Kier can help this thing be seen in a new light. Sound crazy? That might be the alcohol talking, as the guys continue their annual tradition of sampling MANY beers, this time from the Oranje Son Brewing advent case. Make sure there's room at the table either way; this very special CHRISTMAS EPISODE is definitely one you'll want to bring home for the holidays!
This week, Hesse ( @ZeroSuitCamus ) from Seeking Derangements and Movie Mindset returns to the clip to talk about Abel Gance's 7 hour silent epic, La Roue. Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em! The boys are lighting up and taking a drag on the latest episode as they discuss John Carpenter's first contribution to Masters of Horror. If you've seen one episode of Masters of Horror, it's probably this entry from the master himself, John Carpenter. It's often regarded as the best and the presence of Udo Kier in the cast goes a long way in helping establish its atmosphere. Otherwise, it's a pretty standard episode of the show. Your hosts discuss the dangers of depicting “art that kills you” and the highs and lows of its masterful director's career, and the strange angel in Udo Kier's house. Give it a listen, if you dare. Created by Mick Garris, Masters of Horror was a two-season series on Showtime that challenged genre legends to create an hour-long horror film. Follow along as Bennett and Jim are forced to spend no more than 20 minutes discussing each episode from the first season of the series or face a room full of poisonous gas.

In the accompanying podcast we discuss the film's historical significance. Was it a 'film that (made) history? We discuss it relationship to New Queer Cinema. We speculate on whether the film queers Shakespeare and discuss the film in relation to Welles' Chimes at Midnight. We comment on the significance of the casting, the contributions of River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, Udo Kier and others and what their contributions to the film might be. We also discuss in detail particular scenes, the one where the magazine covers come to life; the rhyming musical/ hustler interludes, the great campfire scene. ...and much more.

Journalist and writer Séamus Malekafzali returns to the program to discuss Johnny Mnemonic. Directed by artist Robert Longo and adapted by William Gibson from his own short story, the film was met with lukewarm box office reception and critical derision upon initial release, but has since endured as a classic of 90s cyberpunk aesthetics and startling prescience in its depiction of a 21st century dystopia overrun with corporate malfeasance, an increasingly atomized technological existence, and a global pandemic overwhelming the world's healthcare systems. We discuss the work of William Gibson, pioneer and godfather of cyberpunk; how the film functions as an extension of the worlds he created with his landmark debut novel Neuromancer, and how the film honors both his vision and distinctive style. Then, we praise the incredible cast of characters, led by a deliberately mannered Keanu Reeves performance, with support from Dina Meyer, a crazed Dolph Lundgren, resistance leader Ice-T, and the great Udo Kier. Finally, we discuss the film's breathtaking production design and worldbuiliding, the merits of art that swings for the fences, and the exceptional experience of viewing the film in its Black & White version (as originally intended by Longo, if he had been granted full control of the film). Watch Robert Longo, Keanu Reeves, and William Gibson in conversation for the Black & White release of the film. As the boys venture off the list, we present to you a new sub-series: THE DOGS OF WAR... for... you know... bad war movies. This week on Dogs of War: the kitchen is heating up as Jason and Brendan go to pawn their DVD player for a copy of 2012's Iron Sky on DVD. The problem becomes obvious when they get home and Brendan's VHS player won't accept the disc; this means war. Jason has dug a trench and erected many machine guns around Brendan's home as Brendan prepares to send his tiny doggy, Max, to the moon in a homemade rocket to establish a beachhead for his family's new life. Eventually they watch the movie on the internet and talk about it on Skype. Next week: back to one of the worst German dudes. Questions? Comments? Suggestions? 1974 was a landmark year for film, a convergence of exciting international cinema and the original voices of New Hollywood that still resonates 50 years later. In our new series we invite a different guest for each episode to choose a 1974 movie to talk about, ranging from giant blockbusters to minor cult curios and everything else in between. For William Mendoza of the Men on Film Podcast, 1974 is marked by the rise of Paul Morrissey from Warhol Factory's house filmmaker to international sexploitation auteur. Filmed in unison with his FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN, Morrissey's broad Stoker adaptation BLOOD FOR DRACULA casts Udo Kier as the sulky, shirtless count lurking around an Italian estate, hoping to seduce "wirgins" and consume their pure fluid in order to revitalize his strength. He's impeded by Joe Dallsandro playing a Marxist handyman and famed Italian Neorealist filmmaker Vittorio de Sica who's doing...something. Mendoza loves this movie even though he admits it's a "failure of Italian exploitation," "too artsy to be a horror movie, too stupid to be an art movie." Fascinatingly the whole thing plays out like a classic dirty joke or an 80's sex comedy. There's still plenty to love, and we have a great time breaking down the Morrissey magic which stems from good filmmaking collaborators and a plentiful cast of weirdos to exploit. It's a goofball discussion, with more than a little off-roading. In this episode of Overlapping Dialogue, we take a look at two well-crafted antiques of cinematic yesteryear, one being a genuine article of the past and another as a vibrant reinvention of a dead artform, with 1939's The Four Feathers and 2015's The Forbidden Room. But before we dig into our double feature, we recognize there's no time like the present to indulge in a Blue Plate Special slate that celebrates the life and legacy of Donald Sutherland, speculates on what exactly the prospects of the "experiential attractions" Netflix House intends to offer, catches up on X and Pearl ahead of the trilogy-capping MaXXXine's release, warms up the half-baked yet edible tastes of Unfrosted, and takes comfort in the subtle pleasures of the newly released The Bikeriders. After ascending to hog heaven, we delight in our retro double feature: listen as we place Zoltan Korda's film into the larger canon of British adventure stories and marvel at Guy Maddin and Evan Johnson's truly transformational experiment in the lost craft, beauty, and perversity of silent cinema.
