Regardless of whether Israel has the capabilities to decimate Iran's entire nuclear program, or if the United States needs to become further involved in the war and provide Israel with “bunker-buster” bombs, one thing is clear: “If this war should end with the Iranian regime intact and the elements of its nuclear program recoverable, then, in some ways, it will be all for naught,” argues Victor Davis Hanson on today's edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.” “It is surreal. If we had this conversation five years ago and I said to you, ‘the Iranian nation—that is huge compared to Israel, 10 times the population—the Iranian nation has lost all control of the Houthi terrorists and they are themselves neutered. Their surrogates in the West Bank, Gaza are neutered. They're gone, Hamas as a fighting force. The formidable, the terrifying Hezbollah cadres, they're inert. ‘“‘There is no Russian presence. It's not a patron. It is not a protector. It's not a power in the Middle East. It's tied down in Ukraine. And Iran itself, the formidable powerhouse of the Middle East that evoked terror all over, has no defenses. “And we're down to a single critical issue… if this war should end with the Iranian regime intact and the elements of its nuclear program recoverable, then, in some ways, it will be all for naught.'”

SAM Michelle's Sermon from 12/29/24: "Not for Naught'" Scripture Reading: Luke 2:21-38
Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). Legal challenges to Christmas and holiday displays have been going on for decades. In order to combat the anti-Christmas sentiment outside of the courtroom, a nonprofit religious liberty organization is encouraging shoppers to do so with their wallets. Liberty Counsel's Naughty and Nice List classifies retailers according to whether they censor or celebrate Christmas — an allusion, of course, to Santa's list of naughty and nice children from the Christmas standard "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town."Urging Americans "to give the gift of Christmas back to the companies who support it," the group says, "If retailers choose to profit from Christmas while pretending it does not exist, we encourage you to politely explain why and then patronize their competitors." The list forms part of Liberty Counsel's annual "Friend or Foe Christmas Campaign," which the organization launched in 2003 to counter a rising tide of opposition to the public celebration of Christmas."The war against Christmas is nothing new, and it is certainly evident today in the form of religious discrimination and hostility," says Liberty Counsel founder and Chairman Mat Staver. "Repressive forces have always had the same goal — to first secularize and then to eliminate Christmas and Christian symbols, celebrations and speech. In America, the First Amendment is a guard against censorship and religious hostility. In the retail market, the consumer can decide to patronize stores that recognize Christmas and avoid those that profit from Christmas while pretending it does not exist."

Psalm 52 concerns a lying tyrant and God's impending judgment. Mary Sidney, who lived 1561-1621, was an extraordinary writer, editor, and literary patron. Like many talented writers of her time, she translated all the psalms. Here we talk about translation, early modern women's writing, religious engagements with politics, and the power of Psalm 52. For more on Mary Sidney, see The Poetry Foundation page: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/mary-sidney-herbert For the Geneva translation of Psalm 52, which Mary Sidney would have known, see here: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2052&version=GNV For a new collection of English translations of the psalms in the early modern era, see The Psalms in English 1530-1633 (Tudor and Stuart Translations) (https://a.co/d/6lKqKPS), edited by Hannibal Hamlin. Psalm 52 translated by Mary Sidney Tyrant, why swell'st thou thus, Of mischief vaunting? Since help from God to us Is never wanting. Lewd lies thy tongue contrives, Loud lies it soundeth; Sharper than sharpest knives With lies it woundeth. Falsehood thy wit approves, All truth rejected: Thy will all vices loves, Virtue neglected. Not words from cursed thee, But gulfs are poured; Gulfs wherein daily be Good men devoured. Think'st thou to bear it so? God shall displace thee; God shall thee overthrow, Crush thee, deface thee. The just shall fearing see These fearful chances, And laughing shoot at thee With scornful glances. Lo, lo, the wretched wight, Who God disdaining, His mischief made his might, His guard his gaining. I as an olive tree Still green shall flourish: God's house the soil shall be My roots to nourish. My trust in his true love Truly attending, Shall never thence remove, Never see ending. Thee will I honour still, Lord, for this justice; There fix my hopes I will Where thy saints' trust is. Thy saints trust in thy name, Therein they joy them: Protected by the same, Naught can annoy them.

March 7, 2024Today's Reading: Mark 10:13-31Daily Lectionary: Genesis 39:1-23, Mark 10:13-31It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:25-27)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. It is natural that when we find a hard word from Jesus that we try to find the loophole. The saying about the camel and the eye of the needle is an example—people find many creative ways to explain why it doesn't mean what it says. For example I remember hearing that the “eye of a needle” was a special gate into Jerusalem, and camels couldn't go through it while they were piled high with the things they often carried for travelers, so the trick was to take off the camel's saddle and provisions. So what Jesus really means here is that we can have stuff, we just shouldn't be too attached to it. It's a nice story, but it's completely made up, to, again, find us a loophole around the clear saying of Jesus. It's harder for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God than it is for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. Well, maybe the Good News is this doesn't apply to you or me because we aren't rich. It's not as if any of us is Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos building rockets into space for fun with our spare change. Most of us are more in the bracket of people who still watch the fluctuating gas prices and food prices with trepidation. Surely, we're not rich, so we've escaped this word of condemnation. Sorry, but if you had something to eat today, you're richer than vast swathes of the world's population. There aren't many people in the world this warning doesn't apply to. It's okay if that troubles you, it troubled the apostles as well. Do you see how they respond, immediately recognizing the implications of Jesus' statement? They wonder if this is the standard then who could possibly be saved. But Jesus does what Jesus so often does, instead of pointing us to a path to save and sanctify ourselves by keeping the Law, instead He points to the goodness and mercy of God. It is impossible for us to keep the Law, try as we might. But behold, with God the impossible becomes possible. Just as the lame walk, the dead rise, and the sinful are forgiven, you are saved not by your poverty but by the overflowing prosperity of God's exceeding mercy. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Now my conscience is at peace; From the Law I stand acquitted. Christ hath purchased my releaseAnd my ev'ry sin remitted. Naught remains my soul to grieve; Jesus sinners doth receive (LSB 609:6)-Deac. Eleanor Corrow, Higher Things Board Member and coordinator in LCMS Missionary Services. Audio Reflections Speaker: Pastor Jonathan Lackey is the pastor at Grace Lutheran Church, Vine Grove, Ky.Unforgivable? Unforgiveness is a prison—mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. In a world full of turmoil, many use forgiveness as a coping mechanism without understanding what true forgiveness is. Learn what forgiveness from Christ looks like, and how He forgives His people.

So snuggle up to a cozy fire, grab yourself a copy of this story, put the kettle on for a nice cuppa, and follow along with us as we read and discuss the first of three holiday themed tales in this seasonally appropriate 8th series of The Nerd Blitz Book Club!
(21 minutes) Considering the caliber of the opponent, what we witnessed last Saturday may have been the best defensive effort by ASU this century. Yet the consistent struggles on offense took its toll in a 15-7 road loss. Cole Topham analyzes the Sun Devils' performance from that contest and discusses what needs to be remedied ahead of their home game versus Washington State

Please be aware the stories, theories, re-enactments and language in this podcast are of an adult nature and can be considered disturbing, frightening and in some cases even offensive. Listener Discretion is therefore advised. Welcome heathens welcome to the world of the weird and unexplained. I'm your host, Nicole Delacroix and together, we will be investigating stories about the things that go bump in the night, frighteningly imagined creatures, supernatural beings and even some unsolved mysteries but I promise all sorts of weirdness. So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma.... And on today's Dark enigma well, we are diving deep into some more myths and legends! So, with that said, we will still be playing our drinking game and as you know, the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. The choice of libation, as always my darlings, is yours, so choose your poison accordingly… Alright, now for the game part how about every time I say Tiawath that will be a single shot and every time I say Merodach, that will be a double shot. Now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today's dark enigma… so don your best scholarly duds, grab your thinking cap as we dive into today's offering of The Birth Of The Gods And The Battle Against Tiawath As in so many creation myths we find chaotic darkness brooding over a waste of waters; heaven and earth were not yet. Naught existed save the primeval ocean, Mommu Tiawath, from whose fertile depths came every living thing. Not were the waters distributed, as in the days of man, into sea, river or lake, but all were confined together in one vast and bottomless abyss. Neither did god or man exist: their names were unknown and their destinies undetermined. The future was as dark as the gloom which lay over the mighty gulf of chaos. Nothing had been designed or debated concerning it. But there came a stirring in the darkness and the great gods arose. First came Lahmu and Lahame; and many epochs later, Ansar and Kisar, component parts of whose names signify 'Host of Heaven' and 'Host of Earth.' These latter names we may perhaps accept as symbolical of the spirits of heaven and of earth respectively. Many days afterward came forth their son Anu, god of the heavens.

The Dallas Stars are in, and this year, there are expectations. No more lucky-to-be-here vibes – this time, the Victory Green Gang is challenging. You may ask yourself...how did they get here? Wes and Mark took a good look at the Stars' current situation, and dare we say they like where we're at? In this episode: Does it really matter who Dallas plays in the first round – and why not? How did Mason Marchment look in his first game back from injury? How many matchup problems did his return create for the Stars' playoffs opponents? Why will it probably be at least one more season before Miro Heiskanen starts getting the leaguewide recognition he deserves? On that tip, what will it take for Jason Robertson to get a little sugar? And is Jim Nill the real source of the secret sauce? We don't know the question, but the answer is "Naught-inger." This is Stargazing, and for once, we can't wait for Monday. We've said that our best episodes are ones in which we disagree. This is one of those. Today we're looking at the ancient hymn "Be Thou My Vision," which asks God to be many things to the Christian. We make sure to include the oft-dropped "battle shield" verse. Colin emphasizes the necessity to include explicit reference to soteriological themes in music while Tyler investigates the variety offered by grammatical mood. Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art. Thou my best Thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I Thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one/ Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight; Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight; Thou my soul's Shelter, Thou my high Tow'r: Raise Thou me heav'nward, O Pow'r of my pow'r. Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise, Thou mine Inheritance, now and always: Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art. High King of Heaven, my victory won, May I reach Heaven's joys, O bright Heav'n's Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all. New Zealand tried to hide from Covid. But Covid has found it. Mrs. Single Source of Truth looks foolish again… Medical schools have gone woke. New doctors now must learn about “intersectionality” and “privilege” like they learn about anatomy… The enemy of the Left is truth. Are you required to be as faithful to the person with whom you are steadily dating as you would be to a spouse? Kamala Harris, the Vice President of the United States, declares her pronouns at a discussion about abortion “rights”… A Washington Post columnist is distraught that his daughter plays with a white doll. Who are the racists, again?... Another Washington Post writer couldn't wait to vaccinate her nine-month baby. Thanks for listening to the Daily Dennis Prager Podcast.
