One Final Scare was lucky enough to be invited back for their second year, this time to open for Minki's sketch comedy team. Hear them try to be as funny as possible to make their audience feel like they got their money's worth since only half of them said they were into horror when Tracy polled them with a show of hands :) They discuss the Australian short horror film, Cargo, which went viral after it's premiere at the international film festival, Tropfest, propelling the story into a full feature film format (which you can find on Netflix). And given Father's Day just passed, it's quite a timely moment to cover this touching story of a dad who is determined to get his baby daughter to safety, no matter what...like Zombie mama drama!

    EP 33: A Quiet Place (2018)

Play Episode Listen Later May 30, 2018 120:38

The OFS hosts have talked about it before: women are usually portrayed as lesser individuals in film than their male counter parts. They're usually crazy and often victims, particularly in the horror genre. And with more recent conversations being had regarding white washing and the need for Hollywood to cast more minorities in leading roles, the hope is that films become more diverse, both in terms of the stories being told and talent being cast. However, another group that sees even more disparity in terms of the number of characters written into stories representing them and the number of actors cast into these roles that can best portray them are people with disabilities. The first 30 minutes of this episode recognizes the very few horror movies through the decades which portray individuals with disabilities in lead roles including, deafness, blindness, paraplegia, tetraplegia and quadriplegia. The even more sobering part is how almost none have featured individuals that can best act in these films: actual disabled talent. In comes the discussion of this episode's film!!! A Quiet Place's John Krasinski pushed for casting an actual deaf actress to play the part of the daughter in this surprisingly awesome apocalyptic, alien horror, family drama. And Minki and Tracy are happy to give credit to this film for the mindful and appropriate casting as well as for writing in a brave and self-sufficient character that just-so-happens to be deaf. Kudos, John and team! Also, while there are some silly and annoying things about this film, which the hosts like to point out (ahem...that whiteboard tho), for the most part, it's a solid flick, sure to draw even more viewers and positive ratings, making this a horror film that extends itself well to the masses. So, go see it if you haven't! Oh, and don't ever say these two words to Tracy or to any woman on earth: "Quiet, woman!!"

    EP 32: Downrange (2017)

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2018 77:38

What is transportation horror, you ask? Well, it's a subgenre of horror that Tracy and Minki give a proper name to in order to best describe movies that don't end well for people traveling by planes, trains or automobiles. And funny enough, it seems Ryuhei Kitamura, the director of this episode's film, just looooooves creating films which put unsuspecting victims on a road to their certain demise. This particular movie will take you back to your college days, where you hitch a ride with 5 other college students who you don't know at all but who all happen to live near your hometown for break... Oh, you never did that? Yeah, nobody does that. But, this movie paints a picture of what it would be like to be stuck on a desolate road with "stranger friends" as a sniper begins picking them off, one by one. Why is he doing this? Who is this human hunter? What does he have against these millennials? Maybe it's that he hates how they carry selfie sticks in their back pocket. Who knows? One thing is for sure: you will never get the answers to these questions. So, don't look for them on your ride through this semi-gory, thin-on-story, action horror. Just put it in neutral and prepare to coast through this implausible, yet somewhat satisfying, road trip of death. Oh, and Tracy knows what she's talking about, because she just made another short film this past weekend. Total expert ;)

Yep, it's a long episode, but this story is just 'oh so good!' The hosts have so much to discuss with this mysterious, twist-turning, deeply sad family melodrama turned ghost story. Podcast fans gave a slew of great film recommendations, but Tracy and Minki chose one fan's wish for them to review this 2003 Korean horror film. It was a perfect pick since it features females as the main characters during this special month...that's right, it's Women in Horror Month! The two young actresses in this tragic horror really crank out the anguish and tears in both the creepy and the gut-wrenching scenes. So, join the hosts in saluting females in genre films that keep audiences coming back for more. Sure, this is another film that features females struggling with psychosis — which is ironically the basis of one of Tracy's favorite birthday gifts: House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films — but hey, it's a good story, and thankfully, it's not as heavy as a rape revenge film. Celebrate all the bad ass females in horror films this month and send recommendations for your favorite film de femme!

Sick of the daily grind? Over office politics? Tired of climbing the corporate ladder? Wish you could stop pretending to be so polite and lay the smack down on a coworker? If so, this movie is for you. More of a violent comedy full of satire rather than a traditional horror film, Tracy, and Minki both appreciate the dog eat dog plot, having both worked in the corporate world, though, they both also agree on the lame moments and ridiculousness of it all. Starring the Walking Dead's, Steven Yeun, and the Aussie actress, Samara Weaving, this movie is pretty thin on character development and good writing but the leads' on-screen dynamic is at least entertaining in the best way: a very bloody one. Take a trip back into horror film history as the hosts talk about how the French were a little behind other countries' horror output up until French film director, actor, novelist and pornography filmmaker Jean Rollin released a plethora of exploitation vampire-based films in the 70's and early 80's. This poetic film about the love between two females — one alive and one living dead, recently brought back to life by chemical waste spilling near her tomb — is probably his most notable and as Minki and Tracy agree: a decently entertaining film, if you're not put off by the obligatory nudity.
