Send us a textThe Bums return to the rail yard with S5:Episode 0129 — where NBA/NHL Finals blanked early discussion; OKC seems to be favored in either 5 or 6 games, while Edmonton attempts to topple the Florida Panthers on the frozen water pitch; shockingly and stupidly— Thibs gets the heave ho (run out of NY on a rail for reaching the post-season); the Chicago Fire steals home from the White Sox with their new stadium plan — funded privately by a billionaire who gets it; meanwhile, the Chicago Bears owners are playing footsie with public figures in hopes of squeezing blood from a turnip; in MLB news, the Marlins and Rockies vie for the shittiest start to their season since, well… the Chicago White Sox; meanwhile the Cubbies are flying high while Jerry Reinsdorf announced his plan to sell the under achieving White Sox by 2029 (mercifully); a few sound-bytes from the Bears mandatory mini-camp and close as the beleaguered CHSN sports channel plans it's launch with Comcast cable (good fucking luck w/ that). On the flop, another majestic beer review is executed flawlessly with Begyle Brewing's “Begyle Blonde” (ABV 5.2%), and American Blonde ale brewed with a touch of honey — resulting in a clobber able creation that is ready for summer action; Paddy reviews the upper chunk of a very questionable list of the Top Breweries in Illinois; the Mayor of Clown Town continues his circus show; Eddie reviews a Southside classic with another Chow Report installment; Paddy reviews must-see TV with Netflix' Air Force Elite: Thunderbirds, as well as the real-life Zero Dark Thirty story (Search for OBL); conversely, low-marks were scored on Brett “Slimy Hillbilly” Favre's documentary that chronicles his epic fall from fame; Paddy rants on a few items (not all of the Bums concur, but everyone is entitled to their opinion) before closing with weather report complaints. For nearly as long as we've been waging war, we've sought ways to chronicle it. “Warfare,” a new movie co-directed by the filmmaker Alex Garland and the former Navy SEAL Ray Mendoza, takes an unorthodox approach, recreating a disastrous real-life mission in Iraq according to Mendoza's own memories and those of the soldiers who fought alongside him. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss how “Warfare” 's visceral account brings us closer to a certain kind of truth, while also creating a space into which viewers can project their own ideologies. The hosts consider how artists have historically portrayed conflict and its aftermath—referencing Virginia Woolf's depiction of a shell-shocked soldier in “Mrs. Dalloway” and Vietnam-era classics such as “Apocalypse Now” and “Full Metal Jacket”—and how “Warfare,” with its emphasis on firsthand experience, marks a departure from much of what came before. “That personal tinge to me seems to be characteristic of the age,” Cunningham says. “Part of the emotional appeal is, This happened, and I'm telling you. It's not diaristic—but it is testimonial.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Warfare” (2025)“Apocalypse Now” (1979)“Full Metal Jacket” (1987)“Beau Travail” (1999)“Saving Private Ryan” (1998)“The Hurt Locker” (2008)“Zero Dark Thirty” (2012)“Barry” (2018–23)“Mrs. Dalloway,” by Virginia Woolf“In Flanders Fields,” by John McCraeNew episodes drop every Thursday. Out on her first night on the beat, rookie NYPD cop Megan Turner (Jamie Lee Curtis) comes upon a robbery in a grocery store and takes down the perpetrator. However as soon as she takes him down, things take a strange turn as one witness flees the scene with that perp's weapon. Soon after, Megan meets a mysterious commodies trader named Eugene played by Ron Silver (Timecop, Reversal of Fortune, The West Wing) and....things get even stranger from there. :o These events kick off a slick, violent action thriller directed by Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Point Break, Zero Dark Thirty) relatively earlier in her career. Back in the spring of 1990, this film underperformed but has since garnered a cult following....also included in the cast are Clancy Brown, Elizabeth Pena, Louise Fletcher, and Kevin Dunn. When Al Pacino became obsessed with Oscar Wilde's Salome, he didn't make it easy on himself when trying to put it on camera. Salome is a filmed version of the stage production that featured Pacino as King Herod and Jessica Chastain (Interstellar, Zero Dark Thirty, IT Chapter Two) as Salome. Wilde Salome is a behind the scenes look at trying to stage the production. While also trying to make a feature film, or at least scenes from the play. Directed by Al Pacino, it took years before it appeared on the festival circuit. And then even longer before it was available to watch at home. To try an unravel what Salome & Wilde Salome is all about is entertainment journalist Emily Murray, who is one of the few people that saw the documentary on the big screen when it had a one-night-only showing in the UK back in 2014. Emily explains why she went to see it, how she was hoping for more as to why Al was obsessed with the play and what she thinks to Jessica Chastain's performance. All About Al: The Pacino Podcast is written, presented and produced by Mark Searby. Tracking the CIA's years-long pursuit of Osama Bin Laden, it's part spy procedural, part story of a female outsider in a man's world, and part a complex disquisition on political violence. UNSTOPPABLE director Billy Goldenberg and editor Brett Reed have had a working relationship for over twenty years, going back to their time together on COYOTE UGLY (2000). Since that film, they've logged a lot of hours as "editor and assistant" or "editor and additional editor", but their new film brings about a whole new dynamic, "director and editor". UNSTOPPABLE is the inspiring true story of Anthony Robles (Jharrel Jerome) who was born with one leg but whose indomitable spirit and unbreakable resolve empowered him to defy the odds and pursue his dreams. With the unwavering love and support of his devoted mother Judy (Jennifer Lopez) and the encouragement of his coaches, Anthony fights through adversity to earn a spot on the Arizona State Wrestling team. But it will demand everything he has, physically and mentally, to achieve his ultimate quest to become an NCAA Champion. WILLIAM GOLDENBERG, ACE While UNSTOPPABLE is Billy's first shot at directing, he is one of the most well-respected and sought-after film editors working today. He won an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, and the American Cinema Editors' (ACE) Eddie Award for his outstanding work on the 2013 Best Picture winner, Argo, directed by Ben Affleck. His recent editing credits include Air, 22 July, Unbroken, and Concussion. Goldenberg received dual Oscar nominations in 2013, also being nominated, along with editor Dylan Tichenor, for his work on Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty. In 2015, Billy was again nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA Award, and an Eddie Award for the historical thriller The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. He was previously Oscar-nominated for his editing work on Seabiscuit, and on Michael Mann's controversial film The Insider (with Paul Rubell and David Rosenbloom). Goldenberg was also part of the editing team on Mann's Heat, Ali, and Miami Vice BRETT M. REED Prior to cutting UNSTOPPABLE for Billy, Brett also collaborated with Artists Equity on Doug Liman's film THE INSTIGATORS, starring Matt Damon, Casey Affleck and Hong Chau. Additionally, he edited OLD, directed by M. Night Shyamalan for Universal Pictures, as well as several episodes of Shyamalan's television show THE SERVANT for Apple TV+. Previously Reed cut CLOUDS directed by Justin Baldoni for Disney+; Christoph Waltz' GEORGETOWN; Automatik's DREAMLAND directed by Miles Joris-Peyrafitte and starring Margot Robbie; and Nick Hamm's bio-thriller DRIVEN, starring Erin Moriarty and Lee Pace. Brett's earlier work with Billy Goldenberg included supporting him as an Additional Editor on TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS, LIVE BY NIGHT, CONCUSSION, UNBROKEN and ARGO. Reed was also a First Assistant Editor on THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, ZERO DARK THIRTY, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, NATIONAL TREASURE, amongst others. Free preview of the Bang-Bang Podcast. “We tortured some folks.” Katherine Bigelow and Mark Boal's cinematic blockbuster about the Bin Laden assassination was alternately ballyhooed and panned upon its release. Fans praised its purported cinematic achievements while critics lamented its alleged militarism or pro-torture sympathies. What's remarkable today is the attention it received in all directions, perhaps a universal attention no longer possible in a society so fragmented and lost. Van and Lyle try to make sense of the movie as a contested event, and what its ambiguous ending might tell us about what came next. They also recall where they were when Obama ordered Seal Team Six to pull that trigger.Get the full episode--and all episodes--at: https://www.bangbangpod.com

In the latest Talking Strange, host Aaron Sagers (28 Days Haunted, Paranormal Caught on Camera) talks with executive producers Mark Duplass and Joshua Rofé about their new true crime/paranormal series Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal, debuting on Hulu with eight episodes on Sept. 24, 2024. More About Out There: Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal takes you inside eight true crime cases with shocking encounters with the paranormal world - through eyewitness accounts, expert interviews, and all-new investigations. In each case, amidst an agonizing search for answers, one rumor emerges from the pack: something inhuman is afoot. These in-depth investigations transport us to towns and cities across North America where we speak to individuals with eyewitness accounts and first-person details about the extraordinary, supernatural events that changed their lives forever. A six-year-old boy in the Smoky Mountains disappears forever after being snatched by a mysterious ape-like beast. A UFO crash in Long Island sparks an assassination attempt and illuminates a massive political conspiracy. An occult coven of Satanic witches is implicated in a decades-old New Jersey murder. Lonely ghosts in San Francisco's Chinatown threaten to steal the lives of the unmarried. In these stories and more, “Out There” tracks down fresh leads and uncovers new evidence amid a labyrinth of twists and turns. At the end of the road, the investigations unearth new truths – about the power of mythology, the allure of the paranormal, and the monsters among us. About the Guests: Joshua Rofé directed and executive produced the acclaimed Hulu series SASQUATCH, which premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival. Previously, he directed and executive produced the four-part Amazon Prime documentary series LORENA, which premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, and the Netflix Original Documentary BOB ROSS: Happy Accidents, Betrayal, and Greed. On the latest episode of The Tactical Leader Podcast, Jack Carr, former Navy SEAL, best-selling author, and host of the Danger Close podcast, shared his incredible journey from military service to becoming a top-tier author in the world of thrillers. Carr's reflections highlight the value of building upon a foundation established by previous generations of authors while adapting to today's constantly evolving media landscape.Jack Carr is a former Navy SEAL who served for 20 years, transitioning from military operations to becoming a successful author and podcast host. His military experience, particularly in tactical operations and leadership, deeply informs his writing, lending authenticity to his thrillers. Carr's time in the Navy SEALs laid the foundation for his post-service career, where he draws on his battlefield experiences to create compelling, action-packed stories. His journey from elite military service to top-tier author showcases his adaptability and commitment to excellence across different fields.Building on the Legacy of Great AuthorsCarr emphasized how crucial it has been for him to recognize and build upon the literary foundations laid by iconic thriller authors. "I'm not just regurgitating things—I'm building off the foundation that's been built by all these other authors," he explained. He cited classic stories like *The Most Dangerous Game* and *Rogue Male* as significant inspirations, but it didn't stop there. Carr outlined a timeline of influences, including legendary figures like Ian Fleming, John le Carré, Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy, David Morrell, and Nelson DeMille.Carr acknowledges that the works of these authors have allowed him to forge his own path. "These guys gave me this foundation by writing such amazing books, and I build on that," he said, adding that he's taken lessons from the past and applied them to modern-day storytelling in a way that honors those who came before him.The Importance of Adapting to the Battlefield of MediaOne of Carr's unique insights in the podcast was how the modern publishing environment requires authors to adapt to new challenges, much like a battlefield. "You couldn't have done what I'm doing now back in 1985," he said, reflecting on how digital platforms, podcasts, and social media have revolutionized the way creators can engage with their audience. In Carr's early career, traditional book tours and limited media appearances were the main avenues for engaging with readers. Today, authors like Carr have an abundance of ways to connect with fans, express gratitude, and contribute value, whether through social media interactions or hosting podcasts. “You might just want to write the book, and that's wonderful. But for me, I need to build a readership,” Carr shared, explaining his motivation to create content beyond just writing novels. This approach is more than just business—it's personal. Carr, who has a middle child with severe special needs, shared that the financial responsibility of caring for his family drives his efforts to engage with his audience consistently. "For me, thanking people, being authentic, and adapting to this new environment is just as important as writing the books."From Page to ScreenA particularly exciting moment of the conversation came when Carr recounted the story of how his book The Terminal List was adapted into a major television series. As he was writing the book, Carr imagined Chris Pratt playing the lead role, even though Pratt was then known primarily for comedic work on *Parks and Recreation*. After Pratt's transformation in Zero Dark Thirty, Carr saw him as the perfect actor to embody the main character. It turns out that Carr's intuition was spot on. Through a fortunate series of connections—thanks to a friend, Jared Shaw—Pratt ended up...

Ho-boy, major TRIGGER WARNING this week, lil onions. A lot of this is far from palatable. This week, we close out our theme of war-adjacent films with the political action thriller, Zero Dark Thirty (2012). Ross has the down low on Osama Bin Laden, his minions, and their tradecraft. Carie constantly vacillates between boredom and horror. Worst of all, the siblings have the unpleasant experience of reflecting on just how terrible the last two decades have been. After last week's controversial discussion (who would have thought Christian would be anti-Point Break?), we step into the most controversial period of Kathryn Bigelow's career. After two critical and commercial flops, Bigelow found redemption and earned success at the highest level, becoming the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director for The Hurt Locker. She followed up the Iraq war thriller with Zero Dark Thirty, a film depicting the United States manhunt for Osama bin Laden. These two films have been both widely acclaimed and derided, and are considered controversial for their content, as well as Bigelow's approach to the material. What will our hosts think? Looking back from 2024? Do you have thoughts on these movies? Let us know at cinemaontappodcast@gmail.com

War stories are often the domain of ‘dick lit' male protagonists, but is this a true representation of history and does the experience of women in war differ? In this episode, I reference historical female warriors and examines how the experiences of Maya, the protagonist in Zero Dark Thirty, compares with her wartime service. Valerie explores what happens when the scope of a story is too wide, and the impact scope has on setups and payoffs. -M"What is interesting to me, is how women are portrayed in war movies, are they portrayed as masculine or weak, are they given due credit for their skill and experience, and how does this compare to my own experience?" - Melanie HillRelated Story Nerd EpisodesRogue One (Season 1, Episode 8)Skyfall (Season 4, Episode 6) REGISTER FOR THE 2024 SPRING WEBINAR SERIESFor access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on X, Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor

On episode 227 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello and AwardsWatch contributor Josh Parham to discuss the latest film from director Alex Garland, Civil War, and discuss their favorite political and journalism thrillers. Before they jumped into the review of Civil War, the 2024 Cannes Film Festival was announced this past week, with dozens of American and European films dominating the lineup. Films from Francis Ford Coppola, Paul Schrader, Andrea Arnold, Yorgos Lanthimos, Sean Baker, Jacques Audiard, Paolo Sorrentino, David Cronenberg and more will be having their world premiere next month at the prestigious festival. Not only is it one of the biggest film festivals in the world, but it has become an important stomping ground for International Features, especially the ones that make it into the Oscar categories later in the season. The gang break down what they can't wait to see since Josh is going to the festival next month while Ryan, Erik, and Sophia will catch a lot of these titles at Telluride later in the year. Moving onto the main event of the podcast, Civil War has become one of the most talked about films of 2024 so far, even before its premiere at SXSW. The trailer alone sparked discussion and anger from many thinking it is not the right time to be releasing a film like this as the United States is ramping up for another Presidential Election. But much to the surprise of all, early reactions indicated a much different movie than the trailer suggested. The gang break down their reaction to it the film, covering everything from the film's political stance, the screenplay, the performances and so much more. After that, they dive into a fascinating, in-depth conversation over their favorite political and journalism thrillers, a topic that all of them love considering some of their favorite films of all time came out of the genres. Some of the films discussed in the extensive conversation include All the President's Men, Nightcrawler, JFK, Zodiac, Munich, The Hunt for Red October, Blow Out, The Ghost Writer, Zero Dark Thirty and so many more. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h17m. On our next episode, we will be doing the 2024 AwardsWatch Summer Movie Draft. You won't want to miss it. Get it now before the episode is inevitably taken down out of cowardice. A movie episode (in name only!) in which we use Kathryn Bigelow's “Zero Dark Thirty” as a springboard to discuss the Bush administration's torture program during the global War on Terror, the attempt to use both girl-bossing and identity politics to whitewash the crimes of empire, and the rise of the contemptible and irritating “bearded operator” subculture. While this movie might not be as popular or well-remembered as some of the other films we have done, it perfectly encapsulates the brain-melting feeling you got when you first saw the woke CIA ad.
Greig Fraser, ACS, ASC, (born 3 October 1975) is an Australian cinematographer who studied at the RMIT University. His most well-known work includes the films Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Lion (2016), Rogue One (2016), Vice (2018), Dune (2021), The Batman (2022) and The Creator (2023). For his short film Cracker Bag he was nominated for Best Cinematography at the 2003 AFI Awards. For his work on Lion, he won the American Society of Cinematographers Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Theatrical Releases and AACTA Award for Best Cinematography and received Academy Award and BAFTA Award nominations. Fraser shot Rogue One on the Arri Alexa 65 large format digital camera and Panavision lenses from the 1970s, making it the first feature film shot entirely with the Alexa 65. Fraser said of working with the Alexa 65, "The images are sharper and have more resolution, and those things are an advantage, but for me it is about the depth of the image -- there is a three-dimensionality to it. Often the beauty came from the texture; we found that the camera excelled when we were filming something with texture; it really enhanced the quality of picture." Fraser returned to the Star Wars franchise with the 2019 television series The Mandalorian. In 2020, for his work on the series, Fraser won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half-Hour). For his work on Dune he won his first Academy Award for Best Cinematography in 2022. Fraser said a feature of his work in that film was intentionally using simple compositions, "We tried to simplify the frames as much as we could. By doing that, we've been able to give the viewers that absorption of story and experience" and colour palette: "We tried quite hard to make sure that it all sat within a certain tone."
AND THE WINNER IS...a let down? We have had so much fun this season with some really great films. Films that we called perfect, modern classics, innovative, surprising; and it all led to one of the most predictable Best Picture Winners. Surprising to no one, this was not on the top of any of our rankings at the end of this season, but we can't say we didn't like it. Colin Firth gives a moving performance because he can do no wrong. Geoffrey Rush was a charming supporting actor that matched Firth toe to toe, and Tom Hooper wasn't as annoying as he could be. If this had been 2012's Best Picture Winner, this conversation might have been completely different. Tell us your thoughts on the 2011 race over on Twitter and Instagram. We're taking a short break before we come back with our Conversations with Oscar series- where we dive into the current Oscar season and as always, give our thoughts! It is a story we have not learned much about….until now. Facing sexism and huge institutional hurdles, the story of the women who helped build the CIA and put their lives on the line in conflicts going back to WWII is an incredible, compelling history. Hello everyone! You should know that I thought this episode was slightly dull. I will say that the podcast is anything but. Some Guy in Austin and I tend to go off-roading with our thoughts when the storylines are a little too predictable, and today's recording showcases how we are masters of tangents. While discussing Brayden's Zero Dark Thirty scarf and Dotun's likeability, we also deep dive into important topics, such as: Did anyone glisten in the sunlight like the Cullens? Would you rather skydive or bungee jump? Is the legend of Bigfoot also a metaphor for marriage? And what do we think about Gerry the Golden Bachelor? I personally think Gerry's season is going to be epic. Bring on the Polygrip and shuffleboard! EPISODE NOTES: Click HERE to read my Bachelorette Charity recap from Episode 4. The Academy loves a good spy flick, and so do we! This week, Shane Harris talks with Washington Post culture critic Alyssa Rosenberg about the enduring power of espionage on the big screen. Movies like Zero Dark Thirty, the Mission: Impossible franchise, and this year's Top Gun: Maverick and All Quiet on the Western Front, which both took home Oscars, help us understand global conflict as they wrestle with questions of personal morality. How do the stories of James Bond and George Smiley help us make sense of the fate of nations? And why is Hollywood finding it nearly impossible to tell stories about great power competition between the U.S. and China? Shane and Alyssa go way back, and this is a fun, lively conversation about spy stories that have resonated through the decades. Alyssa has written for years about popular culture, books, and more recently parenting. Chatter is a production of Lawfare and Goat Rodeo.
