Another Paternity Leave Installment, and this time we're going with a pretty famous double-ripped-from-the-headlines episode. Patreon payments are frozen for the time being. A few resourceful new Munchies have figured out a work-around where you can join as a free member and upgrade from there to a paid account which charges you for one month and unlocks the back catalog behind the respective tier of the paywall. After that first payment, you won't be charged again until we're dropping new content (which we'll warn everyone is coming), so if you want more of this it can be had, along with access to the fully uncut episodes from 100 to present and Movie Club episodes. We at Munch My Benson like to go off on tangents, and the intellectual fuel provided by "American Tragedy" (S15E3) propelled us pretty far out there. We learn about old New York when it was still basically New Amsterdam; we break down Cybill Shepherd's accent as it wavers in and out of caricature; we delve into the Trayvon Martin and Paula Deen cases from whose headlines this episode was ripped; we learn about John Cougar Mellencamp's extended family; and, we definitely talk about whether or not it's socially acceptable to deck a bald man in the middle of the night on a lonely street corner. EPISODE 76 - “MEMORABLE OSCAR SPEECHES OF THE GOLDEN ERA OF HOLLYWOOD” - 2/24/2025 Winning an Oscar is a dream for most people who work in Hollywood. But you can't just win the Oscar, you have to have a good speech once your name is called and you head to the podium. There have been some great ones — OLIVIA COLEMAN's funny and cheeky speech hit the right tone and who can forget JACK PALANCE's one-arm push-ups or CUBA GOODING's exuberance? There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? As we prepare to celebrate the 97th annual Academy Award ceremony, Steve and Nan look back on some of their favorite Oscar speeches and why they resonate. So put on your tux, don the gown and jewels, pop the champagne, and join us for a fun talk about … well, people talking. EPISODE 71 - “STEVE & NAN's FAVORITE CLASSIC FILMS OF THE 1970s” - 1/20/2024 The 1970s was a decade that saw the rise of the auteur. Filmmakers like Scorsese, Coppola, Cassavetes, Altman, Lumet, and DePalma hit their stride and brought to the screen their specific vision and stylized films. This week, Steve And Nan take look at some of their favorite films of the 1970s. Merry Christmas/Kwanzaa/Hanukkah/Pancha Ganapati/Festivus/Yule/Saturnalia, one and all! To try to drag themselves into the holiday spirit, the manatees are staying in 1988 for another month to check out one of the most hotly debated is-it-a-Christmas-movie classics of all time, Die Hard! Directed by John McTiernan and starring Matinee Manatee alums Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman, Die Hard is the story of a rogue super cop with nothing to lose named Carl Winslow before he started his family, singlehandedly saving a building full of hostages using only a walkie talkie and a hapless civilian on the inside named John. The manatees dive right in to get at the important unanswered questions surrounding this classic, such as: does fear of flying usually strike after you land? Is it possible that Cybill Shepherd has a manatee child? And of course, what's the best way to consume the writing of Karl Marx? As a bonus, you'll get a free pitch for a Hallmark movie and AND advice on proper cocaine party etiquette absolutely free. Why? Because we love you. In 1973, auteur Martin Scorsese pulled together an all-star cast to make the mafia drama, GONCHAROV. However, thanks to a troubled production the movie remained unreleased, with only a rough cut floating around. In 2024, the cast and crew of the hit podcast Dungeon Punks found a print of the film. Along with special guest Joe MacLeod, they will re-enact the entire movie scene by scene in a special presentation of...GONCHAROV MUST DIE. A special guest is on to talk about a special movie, as degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay are joined by rapper Mage of Freewill — who had a lot of bad ideas in his head to talk about Martin Scorsese's masterpiece 'Taxi Driver.' While discussing the brilliance of the filmmaking, Mage tells a story about the time he almost got arrested for guerilla-filmmaking a music video in Atlanta. On this ep, the boys get heavy into the machinations of a movie they regard as a degen tentpole. Of course they go over Robert De Niro's iconic performance, which may be his career-best, and is bolstered by wonderful supporting turns from a pimped-out Harvey Keitel, a manic Scorsese, a teenage Jodie Foster, and a grimey role from the dad from 'Everybody Loves Raymond' (Peter Boyle). Not to mention an enchanting performance from Cybill Shepherd whose beauty jumps off the screen even while going on what is possibly the worst first date. All those talents are able to come together in one of the scuzziest New York films that beautifully captures the filth of the era. Check out more from Freewill and Pre-Save their new album, Influencer Dead, out November 22, 2024 on all streaming platforms: https://freewillcult.com/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/7lHvYUBoCmwCGQmR9akFLy

Oh yes it's ladies' night on the second episode of Pop Goes The Actor...but IS the feeling right? Sometimes! We wend our way through copyright-compliant bugle boys of Company Wonder Woman, the adorkable Zooey Deschanel, Shelley Fabares's evident terror, Marla Gibbs's appealing blood-thinner ad, and a track from Cybill Shepherd that puts the "no" back in "bossa nova." Throw that sax in a dumpster and join us for legitimate fun vs. snarky fun, the sexual politics of Camelot-era pop, and the timeline where Rosemary Clooney is good. No, NostalgiaCast is talking to you about Martin Scorsese's TAXI DRIVER, one of the most controversial films of the 1970s and still one of the most divisive films of its esteemed director's career. Who loves ya, baby? That's right, the Munchie Boys do. This month we did an entire bonus Movie Club entry for all of our audience, not just the Munchies on Patreon who get one of these a month. And we didn't do just any old movie. We did the anti-rom-com that might just have been the origin of cringe comedy, Elaine May's 1972 masterpiece The Heartbreak Kid, starring Munch alums Charles Grodin and Cybill Shepherd, along with two different Academy Award nominees for their work in this film, Eddie Albert and Jeannie Berlin. Did those two ever earn their nominations here. Wow. Great film. Come along for a blast. You can watch this film (which has otherwise evaporated into the ether on account of its distributor shuttering more than two decades ago) on: Archive.org or YouTube.Music:Divorcio Suave - "Munchy Business"Thanks to our gracious Munchies on Patreon: Jeremy S, Jaclyn O, Amy Z, Nikki B, Diana R, Tony B, Zak B, Barry W, Sara L, Drew D, Nicky R, Stuart, Jacqi B, Natalie T, Robyn S, Isabel P, Christine L, Amy A, Sean M, Jay S, Briley O, Asteria K, Suzanne B, Tim Y, Douglas P, John P, John W, Elia S, Rebecca B, Kevin, Lily, Lucy, Sarah L, Melsa A, Alyssa C, and Johnathon M - y'all are the best!Be a Munchie, too! Send us a Text Message.Episode 256: Great news, everyone! The dust has settled on last week's tiff. Joe and Kari (and their agents) have worked out an agreement to get the two back in the studio. It's time to get back into the music of Moonlighting. How accurate is Showrunner Glenn Gordon's Caron claim that they were able to retain the vast majority of the music used in the show's original run? One thing is certain, they songs performed by Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis on the show remain intact. Some other songs that were kept include hits from Pet Shop Boys and Alisha. Come walk by night!
