Thank you, dear listener, for listening. This is your every-other-weekly-host Marc Hershon and, frankly, I wasn’t sure I was going to get in here this week with our milestone TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTIETH EPISODE, mainly because I had a full-on computer meltdown halfway through cutting clips for this installment. I literally had to cobble all the pieces together on another computer that didn’t have all the usual software I use to do it but, somehow, it all miraculously came together. If you’re just finding us here at Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, we passed our 10-year mark in soundcasting a couple of weeks ago and now we’re clocking in at 250 shows. If you happened to have missed last week, hosted by my alternating guest host Tyson Saner, he featured clips from a trio of comedy soundcasts, including The Blood Buddies: Horror Podcast, Wack Brackets, and Daydrinking with Gary & Ellio‪t. You can grab an earful at either Apple or Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, YouTube, Soundcloud, or a kazillion other places that stream and/or download soundcasts. The one place you CAN’T get new installments of Succotash is, apparently, the Laughable app any longer. Say what? Yes, it’s apparently true. We got a tweet from @CirclinCLE last week informing us that their service hasn’t been updating for a while now. I checked the Laughable website and it’s just…gone. I tried reaching out to Ned Kenney, the founder of the app and a friend of Succotash for years starting when Laughable kicked off, but he seems to have vanished. Ned, if you’re out there, send us a note and let us know you’re okay! I’ve got a quartet of clips for you this week — three new-to-us shows: Bummer Boys, The Celebrity Memoir Book Club, and Odd Dad Out. And we have an old friend and supporter of the Succ, the gang over at The Salty Language Podcast. I also have a pair of belated (but always welcome) congratulatory 10th Anniversary messages that we’ll be hearing from along the way – one from Chris Gore of Film Threat and the departed PodCRASH soundcast, the other from Chris Mancini, a recent guest and host of not one, not two, but THREE soundcasts. Finally, later on in the show, we’re going to resurrect the TweetSack, that portion of the show where we would have read from our mailbag IF we had a mailbag and IF anyone sent us cards and letters. But now, it’s onto the clips… CLIPS Bummer BoysThe Bummer Boys are hosts Alex Kolanko and Mike Carrozza, who are improvisational comedians that host a show about songs that made them sad each week. But they’ve changed their tune for their recent Epi53, along with guest comedian and writer Josh Gondleman. They’ve even entitled the episode “Bouncy Boys”. In our clip, they are talking about the art of writing the consummate Jeopardy! question. Celebrity Memoir Book ClubFrom two male hosts in the last show to a pair of female hosts, we jump over to the Celebrity Memoir Book Club. New York comedians Claire Parker and Ashley Hamilton don’t suffer fools or celebs who pen books about their rarefied lives. Not so, however, when it comes to Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and his autobiographical 2016 memoir Can I Say: Living Large, Cheating Death, and Drums, Drums, Drums. The ladies seem a little gaga for this unapologetic ladies’ man, and this clip touches on that a bit about his wife or wives or maybe wife? Odd Dad OutNext up is a solo-hosted soundcast, Odd Dad Out, with stay-at-home-dad Adam Higgins doing his thing: talking about wrangling his kids, stoking the fires of his marriage, and lots of pretty much whatever jumps into his head. (To be fair, I THINK Adam staked out his home-dad status before the COVID lockdown when almost every dad because a stay-at-home version.) In our clip, which hails from his recent Epi201, he castigates that gender-reveal party run amok in the state of Maine just a few weeks ago that resulted in an actual earthquake. (This entire episode, available wherever fine comedy soundcasts hang out, is an interesting listen as Adam takes us through the gradual re-immersion of his three sons in the back-on-campus school experience, which happened for him in stages because of the different ages of his kids.) Salty Language PodcastTony and Bryan, hosts of the Salty Language Podcast, have been bros and buds since the 1980s. And their shows rambles around through pop culture dating from then ‘til now, what their lives are like, and all sorts of goofy stuff that tickles their brains. In a recent episode entitled “Boot Knife”, they meander through a lot of topics, so I shaved off a few minutes where they talk about what disease Salma Hayek struggles to overcome, the weird retinue of Allan Quartermain movies, and other associated twaddle. Done That, then, will do it for this rather inauspicious, run-of-the-mill epi250 of Succotash. Happy to have you with us, just doing you while we do us. THE CLIPS Live From The Poundstone InstituteWe start with a bit of a brand new soundcast from an old friend of mine. This comes from Epi1 of Live from the Poundstone Institute, hosted by comedian Paula Poundstone. She’s appeared a lot on A Prairie Home Companion and NPR’s Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me, but now she’s got her own show for NPR. I recently reviewed it for Splitsider.com and it’s a pretty entertaining romp in front of a live studio audience. It’s pretty short – the debut episode runs just a smidge over a half hour – and she crams in a bunch of short visits from smart people like scientists and professors as well as celebrities. In this clip, she’s going deep on the sexual proclivities of the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Juice In The MorningOur next offering is from our Associate Producer Tyson Saner’s fresh crop of soundcast clips. It’s from Juice in the Morning. The host is Justin “Juice” Kelly and on the homesite for this show he says, “I do this show as a hobby but maybe one day it will be more than that!” He’s got more than 60 episodes under his belt at this point, so he’s well on his way. This clip is from Episode 65 and Juice is talking to frequent guest Thomas Smith, who may also be the show’s producer from what Tyson could find out. Podcast for LaundryThere’s another brand newish soundcast – just a few episodes in – called Podcast for Laundry — I am beginning to think my campaign to change the term podcast to soundcast is maybe not catching on as fast as I was hoping but I’m going to keep on it mainly because I think it annoys people — but Podcast for Laundry is a show hosted by comedian Brett Davis on the Forever Dog Network. Brett is a winner of the Andy Kaufman Award and, like Andy, Brett often performs as one of a number of characters he’s created. This podcast is a great example. It is recorded in a laundromat and the guests don’t seem to be very happy to be there. His first guest is Tom Sharpling, host of The Best Show, and he’s got some unpleasant feedback for Brett. And God Created PodcastSoundcasting continues to get more and more “niche-y”. Not Nietzsche, although that may be true as well. And it’s making for really interesting content, which is good. The medium can probably only sustain so many pop culture-oriented shows with a bunch of dudes shouting at each other. Tyson scooped up a clip’s worth of a new entry called And God Created Podcast. So new that there’s only one episode up on SoundCloud so far. It features Stephen Peltier, Cassandra Cardenes, Erika Curry and Mickey Broussard, and although the hosts seem to have religion in their childhoods, they’re not really into it as adults. They’ve decided to revisit the stories in the Bible without religious bashing but really just checking out the stories as stories. In Poor TasteWe got a clip submission from Eric Driscoll and Sean Kendle, hosts of the In Poor Taste soundcast, who used our direct upload link through Hightail.com. Full disclosure, I had a DM interchange with Sean on Twitter last week about a bunch of stuff and one thing was this clip. Even though we ask that the clips run 3 to 5 minutes – and believe me, five minutes can be a LONG time in Soundcastland – he said the best they could do was 6 minutes. Well, gents, after listening to it I thought of a couple of cuts to make everything flow a little smoother. Apologies to your comedy timing sensibilities if this cut pisses you off, but know that I did it with the best of intentions. Total running time: 3 minutes and 52 seconds. Your Mom's HouseWe have a clip from a show that been around for awhile, over 400 episodes to be exact. And although we clipped the solo soundcast from one of the co-hosts back in Succotash Epi149 (the That’s Deep Bro show hosted by comic Christina Pazsitzky), this is the first chance we’ve had to clip Your Mom’s House with Christina and her husband, comedian Tom Segura. (Tom also host HIS own soundcast, called Charge It To The Game.) Now we finally get to play a snippet from Your Mom’s House, from recent Epi403 with no guest, just Tom and Christina, talking about being sick and the danger of golf carts. Gone Riffin'We wrap up the clip portion of this epi with one that Tyson grabbed us from another newbiecast called Gone Riffin’ on the Feral Audio Network. Hosted by Rich Fulcher and Abed Geith, they’re about seven 'sodes in and the clip we have is from Epi2. You may recognize Abed as “The Real Abed” from the Harmontown soundcast and Rich is a comedian, writer, and improvisor, whose been on Snuff Box, Drunk History, and The Mighty Boosh. I’ve kind of fallen in love with this app and how easy it is to find and download comedy podcasts, which is my stock in trade. Ned talks about why he came up with the idea and what he’s been through to get the thing up and launched. THE SHOWS Bad Cop, Bad CopThe first clip for this episode is from Bad Cop, Bad Cop, a show I’ve not heard of before — which is becoming the rule rather than the exception it seems, there are SO many comedy podcasts out there — and was uploaded directly to us by a listener. An unidentified listener. He or she says about Bad Cop, Bad Cop: “One of my favorite shows. It’s hard to pin down a small segment of this show but here it is. These two guys have an infectious giggle and have me PMSL each week.” (I suspect the listener is British, as PMSL stands for “piss myself laughing”, which is the English version of ROFL – Rolling On The Floor Laughing.) The co-hosts of the show are named Jerry and Dave — no last names — who, according to the About blurb on their homesite, are “two guys with pretty bad attitudes." Horribly AwkwardNormally I have more information about the podcasts that we get the clips from, but sometimes the podcasters are pretty stingy with putting the facts out on their homesites. Take Horribly Awkward, for instance. It took several links to find out that the name of the host is Shaun Fuller. And I didn’t get the last name until I hopped onto the Laughable app and found that he was a guest on the Three Is Comedy podcast. Here’s his description of Horribly Awkward as it appears on Stitcher: “This is my horribly awkward, guest-driven, improvised, comedy and fun filled podcast. Take a ride with me on this journey with a new guest every week!” Tyson pulled this clip from Shaun’s Epi42 when his guests included Brink and Jesus, the co-hosts of the Horrible Gamerz podcast, Brink’s wife Becca, and Rob from Random Ramblings with Rob. I don’t want to say that parts of Podcastland are getting a little incestuous but…ewww.  The Naked Porch PodcastI could have sworn we featured The Naked Porch podcast before but I’ve just been to the Succotash Archives and I just find mentions I made of the show, not any clips at all. So it’s high time, thanks to Tyson, that we rectify that situation. This podcast falls into the “Sittin’ Around And Chewing The Fat” category of podcasts and these three — Chris, Ray, and Danielle — are clearly having a great time without anyone else’s help. The Irresponsible MentorsTyson clipped this next entry from The Irresponsible Mentors podcast – a title I love - but he didn‘t include a lot of intel. And I have to say, after tracking the hosts back through a few sites, there’s not much out there. Here’s what we know: This is from a “minisode” at the end of May called “Comeback Warriors & Unarmed Gorilla Get’s Shot”. By their cartoon logo, one host is Chip T, the other is SQ BZ. Guess you're meant to discover the rest for yourself. Tall Tales & Shaggy DogsRather than my usual wrapup, I wanted to feature a recent episode of Abner Serd’s shortform podcast, Tall Tales & Shaggy Dogs. In an episode entitled, "Faraway places (or, What's it like in Lower Shmorgestan?)". which is a story rather than a song, he ends up giving my wrap-up line himself. Podcast GraveyardThere are SO many podcasts floating around out that, unless you listen to particular ones all the time, you might not even notice when one goes off the radar. Such is the case with The Tobolosky Files. I really enjoyed this show, featuring actor Stephen Tobolosky who, with the help of critic and filmmaker David Chen, would tell stories from his interesting life and unique position of being one of the most legendary modern-day character actors working in film and television. Stephen’s podcast went dark about a year ago,with Epi71 dropping on August 13th, 2015. Yeah, it’s me. Marc Hershon, your host and HO-scale Lionel train for Epi134 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. This is an installment of Succotash Chats, with almost 100% yakity yak and almost 0% clippety clips.  Our special guest this episode is none other than our very own raging moderate, political comedian and social commentator Will Durst! Yes! Unbelieveable — after his priceless contributions for the past FOUR years of our Burst O’ Durst segment, I finally managed to wrangle the great man himself into a sit-down. It really shouldn’t have been that hard to get together with him – we live in the same goddamn city. And we’ve both been appearing periodically together on the same stage the past few years during screening of the 3 Still Standing documentary. It’s about the early days of San Francisco stand-up comedy starting back in the early 1980s boom times, and featuring Will, Larry “Bubbles” Brown and Johnny Steele. Anyway, it’s a good time to get Will in front of the mic. Every four years we have the Presidential election and Durst blooms like one of those crocus plants, except his comedy is being liberally – or, rather, conservatively — fertilized by Donald Trump’s bullshit. So he’s in rare form. BACK FROM L.A. I just got back from LA this past weekend, where I was hosting the kickoff episode of The Carvey Podcast, a new show featuring Dana Carvey and his two sons, Dex and Tom. Their roommate Rickie was also onboard for this inaurgural event, and veteran comedian Barry Sobel jumped in for the last few minutes as well. Things got a little dicey about a half hour into the proceedings. Dana and I kicked things off and he was really funny. The audience – which wasn’t huge – maybe 20 people in the Improv Lab — was enjoying it. And why not? A lot of them were friends of mine! So Dana had gotten up to make room for the boys at the table on stage. He was moving around to the other side of this standup piano on the side of the stage and… well, to find out what happened next, you're going to have to LISTEN to this episode!  A NEW WAY TO LISTEN I’ve been using a brand new app that just launched last week in my effort to make listening to comedy podcast episodes easier and easier.
