Hello, gentle listener! Welcome to Episode 320 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. I'm Marc Hershon, your host for this latest stroll through Soundcastland. If you happened to somehow miss last week's Episode #319, entitled “Title Resonance” and masterfully curated by my counterpart and co-host, Tyson Saner, during which he played snippets for a trio of soundcast treats including Not Today, Thank You, Strong Songs, and Trashy Trashy, fear not! It is still within earshot for you through any one of a number of online distribution points, including (but not limited to) Apple & Google Podcasts, Soundcloud, Spotify, Amazon Music, Audible.com, iHeart Radio, Podbay, Podchaser, Stitcher and, of course, our very own Island of Misfit Toys here on the Soundcast Sea at SuccotashShow.com. For this week's episode, I have no such bouquet of clippage to share with you because I am very happy to welcome a special guest in for a chat! This is Christine Blackburn's first actual interview here, even though I've talked to her numerous times in the past as a friend of Succotash. Our first run-in was during the very first Los Angeles Podcast Festival – an event which lasted 5 years and then was eclipsed by some giant corporate entities' moves to squelch the li'l guy. We kept running into each other at subsequent Podcast Fests, and Christine was instrumental in helping to round up various and sundry soundcasters to come join me at the Succotash microphones we had set up. Her first soundcast is just slightly longer running than this one, called Story Worthy, and features guests telling stories in front of a live audience. She has also been running Story Smash, the story-telling game show soundcast. (My most recent guest, Blaine Capatch, is a frequent judge on that show.) And now she's has just launched her newest soundcast called My Life in 3 Songs, featuring comedians talking about a trio of songs that heavily influenced their life and, often, careers. Our chat took place a couple weeks ago, just before My Life in 3 Songs debuted on Spotify, so you'll hear us talking about the fact the show is about to drop when, in fact, it is now available! Our Succotash chat with Christine Blackburn is brought to you by out completely fake sponsor Henderson's Pants, and the latest word on their new Summer Stock Slacks! Thanks again to our guest, Christine Blackburn. Please check out ALL her soundcasts, won't you? Don't forget to grab Succotash Epi321 next time around in this very same feed with Tyson Saner bringing the soundcastic magic to you. And remember: If you happen to be out on the open plains, running some cattle from Texas to Wyoming, and Cookie, the grizzled cook in the chuckwagon happens to ask if you've heard anything good lately, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon
If this is your first time dropping in to listen to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, welcome. If you've been this way before, welcome back! This is Episode, or “Epi” number 318 and I'm Marc Hershon, your guide for this week's tour of comedy soundcast clips. Not to be confused with your host for last week's installment, Epi317. That would be Mr. Tyson Saner, a grand fellow in his own right. He presented a trio of soundcast clippage under the title “Reach Out and Clip Someone”. Those shows included The Greatest Song Ever Sung (Poorly), Mom Can't Cook!, and The Co-Founder. If you somehow missed the show last week, it's still hanging around wherever you get your soundcasts. Places like Apple and/or Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Amazon Music, iHeart Radio, Audible and, after a long break while we were boycotting them for their programming decisions, Succotash is back on Spotify, baby! Plus, as always, you can grab any of this show's past 11 and a half years'-worth of episodes at our homesite, SuccotashShow.com. But that was then, this is now, so let me tell you what I have in store for you. Of all the comedy sub-genres – crime, movie reviews, TV show rewatches, the paranormal, etc. – one that has gotten very little play on this show over the years has been sports/comedy or comedy/sports. Not for a lack of content – there are thousands of soundcasts with a sports bent to them. The truth is that I'm just not much of a sports fan. Any sports. And although some of my favorite funny people host or are featured guests on these shows, when I've tried to listen I pretty much don't know the details that they get into around whatever the sport happens to be. To be totally transparent, no one has ever written in or called the Succotash and Runaway Truck Ramp Hotline at 1-818-921-7212 to request clips from sports-based soundcasts. Nor have any of those shows sent in their own clips to our direct Hightail upload site, at hightail.com/u/Succotash. So have I been remiss? Sure. I'll take the hit on that but Succotash is a two-way street – or soundcasts, rather – and if you let us know what you like to hear, don't hesitate to reach out! No matter! Today's the day we make it all up with a quartet of sport-oriented soundcast clips! You'll be hearing from the likes of Hotboxin' with Mike Tyson, Sportsfeld, The Grade Cricketer, and The View from the Cheap Seats. I will confess right now that I won't pretend to know the intricacies of what's being bandied about in these clips but for you sports fans out there, you won't need my help. And, if like me, YOU'RE not a big sports fan, just sit back and relax. This won't take long. PLUS we have a commercial from our favorite and only long-running sponsor, Henderson' Pants new Drifter Chinos. If you love the romance of the open road, look out: Henderson't rag pickers are out there, looking to get into your pants! CLIPS Hotboxin' with Mike TysonWho would have figured soundcasting would be the next best stop for heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson? Who in their right mind would tell the champ “no”? Not me! No, sir, no way! I understand from some friends of Succotash who have been guests on both our shows that the title isn't so much about boxing as it is about being enclosed in a studio with a former pro boxer and a lot of herb being partaken of with very little ventilation. Back in July Mike had Bill Maher as his guest and they tore it up about religion, Black Lives Matter, police brutality, and Marilyn Monroe. (Who's coming at poor Marilyn Monroe after all these years? That would be Bill, of course…) SportsfeldHere's a clip where I am totally out of my depth. This is from Sportsfeld – “a sports podcast about nothing”, according to the show's description on Apple Podcasts – and I think the hosts, Andrew Zuber and Jake Goldsbie are talking about soccer. Pretty sure. But the series in Canada they're talking about was happening concurrently with a baseball series AND a hockey series. For this clip I purposefully left off whatever set-up there was, just to see if you're as lost as I am… The Grade CricketerThis next clip may be a bit out of reach for listeners who are even die hard sports fans in North America. The show The Grade Cricketer and it's about – you guessed it – cricket. To start with, I'd never heard of the term “grade cricket” and had to look it up. Here's the definition on Wikipedia: “Grade cricket, also known as Premier Cricket is the name of the senior inter-club or district cricket competitions in each of the Australian states and territories.” There were originally three hosts of the show, all cricket writers in Australia: Sam Perry, Dave Edwards, and Ian Higgins. These lads have even written books about the topic, although I was sad to hear that Dave went his own way in 2020 to focus on other things. Anyway, I could barely understand what they're saying, let alone what their cricket references are about. So I reached out to an one of our oldest friends of the soundcasts: Jabs (Jason McNamara) of the old DHead Factor soundcast down in Canberra, Australia to give me his thoughts on The Grade Cricketer. Thanks, Jabs! View from The Cheap SeatsOur final clip is from a show by a couple of guys I've met peripherally, years ago, at the Los Angeles Podcast Festival. We've featured them before from the great soundcast they do along with Daniel Van Kirk called Dumb People Town. I'm talking about the Sklar Brothers, Randy and Jason. These guys are totally into sports and they get to let it shine nowadays in their other soundcast called View from the Cheap Seats. In this clip they're talking about MVPs and champinoships and other things I don't get, along with their guest – another friend of Succotash – the great Wayne Federman. That's going to do it for our sports clip-related show. If you're a sports fan I hope I didn't ruin it for you, but I just don't get it. Or them. I'm a nerd, and a dweeb, and I prefer a good game of Dungeons & Dragons to watching the Super Bowl. But I recognize the importance of sports in our international zeitgeist so please enjoy. Listener, you are always welcome to send email into either me, at m-a-r-c@SuccotashShow.com OR Tyson Saner at t-y-s-o-n@SuccotashShow.com Jump into this feed next week for Epi319 when Tyson returns with more soundcastic wonderfulness. If you're looking for more entertainments, I do an editorial cartoon for the Half Moon Bay Review weekly newspaper which you can find online at http://hmbreview.com and just click on the Opinion section in the pulldown menu. Other than that, if you find yourself pushing a cart down the aisle in your neighborhood grocery store and a kindly senior citizen is heading your way from the other end of the aisle and stops you to ask, “Have you heard anything good lately?”, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon
Welcome back if you're a return listener to this soundcast. If this is your first time in, welcome as well to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, where we offer you a weekly tasting platter of comedy soundcasts from around the internet for your ears. Bite-sized little clips that will, hopefully, tempt you to seek out the shows we're featuring in their entirety. I'm your host for Episode 274, Marc Hershon, but to keep up the frenetic pace of putting out a weekly show, I split the hosting duties by switching off weeks with Mr. Tyson Saner. And if you didn't catch last week's entry, Epi273, in which Tyson featured clips from Amazing Pop Culture Podcast, Life is Short with Justin Long, and WTF with Marc Maron. Don't despair, as you can still catch the episode on Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Audible, iHeart Radio, Soundcloud, and wherever fine soundcasts are streamed and/or downloaded. You can also grab it from our homesite, SuccotashShow.com, where we have stockpiled our past 10+ years of comedy soundcast clippery and also interviews we have done over the past decade. Just a quick reminder that Tyson and I are currently (and always have been) clipping and presenting this array of soundcast snacks out of the goodness of our hearts. We so far have failed to lure any sponsors to this show, other than our freeloading fake advertiser Henderson's Pants, and it actually costs money to put this sucker out every week. We're not complaining – we love doing this – but what would be so super nice of you would be if you could show your appreciation for our efforts by rating and reviewing Succotash Show wherever you happen to be getting it from. A quick five stars, a couple of lines about how enchanting the show is – you're in, you're out, no one gets hurt. Thanks in advance – we really do appreciate your listenership and we hate to beg, but hey… I've got a full rack of clips to share with you this week, from comedy soundcasts For What It's Worth, Storytime with Seth Rogen, How to Survive! with Danielle & Kristine, and Movies to Be Buried With with Brett Goldstein. In addition, this episode is brought to you by Henderson's Pants new Beavertail Pants! CLIPS What Are You Watching?I'm going to kick things off with a special bonus clip! What makes it special? Well, I'm in it. That's right. It's me being featured as a guest on another soundcast. Hosted by past Succotash guest and friend of the show Chris Mancini, What Are You Watching? is Chris and a guest talking about what they're watching, mostly on TV but sometimes movies, too. So we've had Chris on, we've featured his soundcast, so all it took was a little begging and pleading to be invited to be the guest for his recent Episode 50. It was a nice change of pace to be the interviewee, and we had a great time talking about a bunch of shows. The clip is from our discussion of the Hulu/FX streaming show Y: The Last Man. Movies to be Buried With with Brett GoldsteinIf you're a fan of Ted Lasso, the big breakout hit on Apple TV last year starring Jason Sudekis – as I am, regardless of the pounding it's been taking from people this season – then you probably also love the character of Roy Kent. Portrayed by Brett Goldstein, Roy's a foul-mouthed contentious veteran footballer who becomes a foul-mouthed, slightly less contentious coach in Season 2. Brett started out as a staff writer on the show who lobbied Sudekis and the producers to let him play Roy and wouldn't you know? The guy's perfect. What I didn't know of, I'm ashamed to say, is that Brett is also a comedian and, what's more, has been hosting more than 160 of episodes of his own comedy soundcast called Movies To Be Buried With, with Brett Goldstein. He brings in a guest, explains that they've been killed in some manner, but the good news is that they go onto an afterlife where they get to explain their life through their favorite movies. Episode 121 featured guest Patton Oswalt and, as you can imagine, hilarity ensued. We have an ear peek for you… How To Survive! with Danielle & KristineNext up is a clip from the debut episode of a brand new comedy soundcast: How To Survive! with Danielle & Kristine. Every episode features hosts Danielle Koenig & Kristine Kimmel doing their best to help you figure out how to “survive the things that could kill you and the stuff that just makes you wish you were dead.” In their kickoff installment, it's how to both survive a wildfire and also, with the help of their comedic actress friend and guest, Alex Alexander, how to survive being fired. Our clip is from the first part, and jumps into what you should do if you're at home and can see a fire coming… Storytime with Seth RogenWe've clipped another soundcast that just kicked off in recent weeks: Storytime with Seth Rogen. Seth has a very funny and creative mind, and this is a pretty inventive show, with guests popping in an out as he unfolds someone's story that intersects with other people and becomes their story along the way. In his first episode, the story belongs to Quinta Brunson, a writer, producer, comedian, and actress. You may know her from her self-produced Instagram series Girl Who Has Never Been on a Nice Date. But before she got into showbiz, she was a Jehovah's Witness, living a pretty buttoned up lifestyle. Until she was on a date in Phildelphia and happened to meet Paul Rudd, yes, that Paul Rudd, at the movie theater she was in. The impact of that encounter changed the course of her life. Our clip is from Seth's chat with Paul Rudd, who doesn't recall his encounter with Quinta, but does explain why he's so damn nice to people. For What It's WorthMurray Valeriano is a comedian and longtime soundcaster – you maybe heard his show Road Stories, where he chatted with fellow comics about mostly hell gigs – and we've met repeatedly during the five-year-run of the Los Angeles Podcast Festival. He has a new-ish soundcast up and running, which I reviewed last week for This Week in Comedy Podcasts for Vulture.com called For What It's Worth and, as Murray calls it, “the only music and comedy game show … that matters!” It's a fast-paced game show with a lot of opportunities for the comedian contestant to bust each other's (and Muraay's) chops while trying desperately to correctly answer music trivia questions. This clip is from a recent episode featuring Jimmy Pardo, Gary Brightwell, and Geoff Tate, and the opening round, called “The Rock Wall”. That's what you're going to hear, and a few other little odds and ends, on Succotash Epi274. Here's hoping you enjoy our clip harvest for this week, and that you are inspired to go listen to one or all of the shows we're featuring this week. If you're having trouble remembering the show titles or where you can find them, I invite you to slide over to our blog page for this episode at our homesite, SuccotashShow.com, where you'll find lovely little clickable titles for the show AND clickable Twitter or Instagram links for the folks involved in the soundcasts. Tyson Saner will be right in this same feed next week with Episode 275 which will likely have a new crop o' clips for you. In the meantime, try to treat everyone you meet decently, wear a mask if you're supposed to, vax if you haven't, and if anyone asks if you've heard anything good lately, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

Hello, dear listener. I’m Marc Hershon, your every-other-weekly host of this show. Happy to be back. Last week co-host Tyson Saner was in the hot seat with Succotash Shut-In Epi240, favoring your pearly shell-like ears with clips from such audio wonderments as What Had Happened Was, Oprah's Master Class, and The Al Franken Podcast. You can still catch that installment at our homesite, http://SuccotashShow.com, as well as from Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, the Laughable app and wherever diner soundcasts are streamed and/or downloaded. Just last week - the past two weeks, actually - I was a guest on the Chillpak Hollywood Hour, with Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness, where, along with comedian and writer Suli McCullough, I participated in a comedy roundtable discussion. We talked about our comedy influences, the effect of the pandemic on live performance and the creative process, and more. Check it out when you can at their homesite: ChillpakHollywood.com, or wherever you grab your favorite soundcasts. Back in July I did an episode focusing on some soundcasts that I called Doin’ It Down Under with Jason McNamara, and I tapped our old friend Jabs to find me a quartet of soundcasts from Australia and New Zealand. For this installment, Epi241, entitled Crossin’ The Pond, I leaned on another friend of the show, George Grimwood, to load us up with a four-pack of shows from England and he came through with flying colors. It’s not like we don’t occasionally feature British comedy soundcasts. We recently clipped From the Oasthouse with Alan Partridge, and Strange Times with our friend Davian Dent. But on tap today we’ve got four shows we’ve not featured before, including Looks Familiar, The CheapShow, Rule of Three, and The Adam Buxton Podcast. This episode is sponsored by Henderson’s Pants new Camo Cut-Offs. Let me wax on about George Grimwood for a moment. We met via the socials back in the early 20-teens and then crossed paths in real life at, I believe, the third Los Angeles Podcast Festival. You can hear a short chat I had with him while we were hovering in the lobby area back exactly a hundred episodes ago, in Succotash Episode 141. George runs the Podnose Network that carries a number of soundcast over in England which he points out is “the UK’s leading independent entertainment podcast network,” with thousands of hours of content and more on the way. He himself is rebooting the show he hosts, called The Talk Show Talk Show (no relation to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast…), in which he analyses classic (and not-so-classic) episodes of Late Night talk shows, including Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, and more. So George not only suggested the shows we’re clipping today (I actually harvest them myself), but gave me little blurbs about each show which is a tremendous help. Thanks, George! Without further ado, let’s get into this collection of English clips. (Do you think they call snippets crisps over there?) Looks Unfamiliar Our first show, Looks Unfamiliar, features journalist and writer Tim Worthington speaking with a guest about lost nostalgia - aspects of pop culture that have been discarded and forgotten in time, but often remembered fondly or with fear by the guest. Our clip is from recent episode 73 with director Matt Lee, and they’re talking about this service that used to exist called Dial-A-Song, where you could call a number on your phone and hear music played on your phone. CheapShow The CheapShow is a soundcast featuring Paul Gannon and Eli Silverman searching for bizarre treasures one may find in the Poundlands – which is a chain of British variety stores – I think it must be like our Dollar Stores here in the US, as well as bargain bins and charity shops, often culminating in some very unusual discoveries and hilarious segments. Our clip has the two lads reading a submission from a listener about a very strange find. Spoiler alert: It’s a turd. Rule Of Three This next soundcast, Rule of Three, was the winner of the best Arts and Culture division at last year’s British Podcasts Awards…and then promptly went on hiatus. But comedy writers Jason Hazeley and Joel Morris are coming back for more, according to our man George. And good thing, too – this is a super show! The hosts talk to comedians about something funny that they love. Guests pick whatever it is that makes them laugh — a book, a film, a tv show, a comic, a radio show, anything — and then the hosts and guest dig in. Our clip features a guest that I wish was a friend of Succotash, Eddie Izzard. He’s funny, and smart, and the thing he picked to highlight on the show was John Lithgow, specifically from his appearance on TV’s 3rd Rock from The Sun. The Adam Buxton Show The Adam Buxton Show is an interview show, or a “chat show” as they say across the Atlantic. Adam was originally part of Adam & Joe, a thoroughly enjoyable cult television series he did with Joe Cornish. They then became radio personas and, while Joe has been busy directing films, Adam has been podcasting. And writing, too — he recently released a memoir entitled Ramble Book. Our final clip of this episode features Adam’s “Ramble” with Canadian comedian Tony Law, where they share their experiences of being a stranger in a strange land – Disneyland. That’s a wrap on our listen to a few shows from Across the Pond. I realize that some of those accents from the British Isles might be a bit think for some of our US listeners, so I’ll advise you do what I do – listen again. It’s the King’s English, people! You’re bound to pick it up. Thanks once again to George Grimwood of the Podnose Network. If you want to reach out to him, you can email him at podnose@gmail.com. He tells me that they are looking to expand beyond the UK content next year. Who knows? Maybe Succotash can finally get our network stripes! I would love to authentically be able to say, “We’re getting the sign from the network to wrap it up…” Until then, we’re just going to have to wrap it up ourselves. Remember that Tyson will be here next week with another bouquet of soundcasts clips for you. And I’ll be back the week after with something nice for your ears. Until that time, stay safe, keep warm, wear a mask, wash your hands and if anyone asks if you’ve heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon
Hello, chumley (I’m talking to you, dear reader), and I am glad that things here in the good ol' US of A seem to be sort of simmering down. Maybe. Kinda? It, at least, FEELS like it’s getting betterer. Marc Hershon here to usher you through Epi237 of Succotash Shut-In: The Soundcast Stimulus Package. The California shelter in place order just got lifted yesterday for now and, who knows, by the time our office 10th anniversary rolls around this April, we may be able to go back to being just plain ol’ Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast again. We’ve got a special guest sharing the SuccoZoom Studio with me today but before we get to him I wanted to ask if you caught our most recent Episode 236 with our alternating host Tyson Saner. He featured a few marvelous clips last week from the soundcasts Love, Alexi, Strange Times, and In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast. Go scoop up a big earful of soundcast goodness at Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, YouTube, the Laughable app, or from our own homesite, SuccotashShow.com. My guest today is the amazingly hard-working and detail-oriented Chris Mancini! You probably know Chris from his ten-year tenure aboard the Comedy Film Nerds soundcast that he co-hosted with Graham Elwood. We’ve chatted with him a number of times in the past on this show, usually when I was down at the Los Angeles Podcast Festival, which he, Graham, Dave Anthony, and Andy Wood spearheaded for five years. We talk about why that endeavor came to a halt but it sure was fun to be a part of that every year. Chris has a lot going on, from graphic novels and not one, two, but three soundcasts running concurrently. We talk about it all and dig a little bit deeper into the history and the mystery that is Chris Mancini… You can link up to everything Chris has going on at whitecatentertainment.com, including his three soundcasts: What Are You Watching?, The Quiet Journeys of Professor Atwood, and Conversations from the Abyss. You can also follow him on Twitter @ChrisJMancini. I’ll just say thanks for dropping by, please remember to rate and review us where they let you get away with that stuff – it costs nothing for you to do it and it means the world to us. And remember that Tyson will be here before you know it with a lovely packet of soundcast clips just for you. Until we meet again, be good to each other, wear a damn mask, and if anyone asks if you’ve heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

"It was like walking onto the surface of the moon," Graham Elwood says of his first experience walking off of a C-17 in Afghanistan. His experience was not unlike many of our own first times deploying to a far-off edge of the world. We take a long, long C-17 (or god help you, C-130) ride for seemingly endless hours. There are no windows. The plane is packed. Forget about an in-flight movie or looking out the window. And when you walk off, it's invariably the middle of the night and you and the hundred or so people you're with walk off the flightline in a single file. From there, who knows? There's a good chance the "hurry up and wait" has just begun. For civilians visiting war zones for the first time, it's no different – except they have no idea how to speak the acronym language. "They said 'When your bird hits the LZ, find your POC, they'll take you to the MWR tent then you can go to the DFAC,'" he jokes. "It's like... what are you saying to me right now, man?" Elwood is a Los Angeles-based comedian with appearances in comedy clubs across America, on college campuses, and even CBS' Late Late Show. He's also a veteran podcaster with shows like Comedy Film Nerds, and The Political Vigilante, and he's a co-creator of the Los Angeles Podcast Festival. None of that prepared him for performing for U.S. troops deployed in combat zones. His first documentary, Laffghanistan: Comedy Down Range, is about his first time volunteering to go do just that. It's amazing how fast you can go from playing the Hollywood Improv to playing Bagram Air Base. For someone who admits he's pretty far removed from the Global War on Terror, it all came home to him when went around the small firebases of Afghanistan. It was his first time in helicopters, driving in unarmored vehicles on the ground in Afghanistan, and seeing minefields. It got real for him for him real fast. "What was said to me and what I've said to other comedians," he says. "Well don't go over there if you don't want to be changed. It will change you. You have no idea. This is no joke." Now that Elwood has done a number of these shows and tours around deployed military bases, he looks back at his first experience in this episode of Mandatory Fun. Nothing could adequately prepare him for performing a comedy act in Afghanistan. All the dive bars and sh*t holes he played as a young comedian is the best thing he could do to prepare. He was still freaking out but couldn't help but put himself in the shoes of young troops. "I'm here for two weeks," Elwood says. "and MY family is freaking out. Imagine them and their families and how much they're freaking out." But they quickly realized that they need to be the comics. They were there for a reason: to give American troops fighting overseas a few laughs, a taste of a normal night, and a show to help ease their tension, even if it was only for a short time. Mandatory Fun is hosted By: Blake Stilwell: Air Force veteran and Managing Editor Tim Kirkpatrick: Navy veteran and Editorial Coordinator Orvelin Valle (aka O.V.): Navy veteran and Podcast Producer Catch the show on Twitter at: @MandoFun and on our Facebook group.
Yes, believe it or now, and for the last time – really, this time, it’s me. Marc Hershon. Departing host but still remaining executive producer of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. First of all, I lied to you last episode when I said THAT was the final episode. Because after I dropped that installment I heard from a number of our friends-of-the-show, mainly soundcasters who have been so supportive and helpful over the seven years that the show has been on that I felt I truly hadn’t thanked enough people when last I signed off. Also, between Epi162 and now, we’ve found a way to keep Succotash going! In classic show business fashion, I’m just going to tease you with that for now and it will NOT be revealed in this blog post! You'll just have to listen to the episode to find out, as I do have a lengthy chat with my replacement toward the very end of the episode. The initial impetus to do an UNFINAL episode was that our resident political comedian and social commentator Will Durst had sent me a last Burst O’ Durst installment which arrived after we’d dropped Epi162. And then I discovered we also had a last Boozin’ with Bill segment with our announcer Bill Heywatt that had somehow slipped through the cracks. Based on those things, I figured I would do one last round of soundcast clips just featuring shows from some of our most vocal supporters on social media. Which gives us quite a lineup! Big giant thanks, by the way, to our Associate Producer, Tyson Saner, for helping me to harvest the absolute bumper crop of clips we’re featuring this show. You’re going to hear from The Anti Social Show, Casa Mirth, the Chillpak Hollywood Hour, Comedy Film Nerds, Ear Goggles, Film Threat, Illusionoid, Quick Question, Story Worthy, and Strange Times. And this Unfinal episode is sponsored by our friends at Henderson’s Pants and teir spanking new Down UnderPants. (Including an endorsement from Jason "Jabs" McNamara, all the way from Canberra, Australia.) THE CLIPS Chillpak Hollywood HourFirst out of the barrel are a couple of gents I have referred to often as being members of “podcast royalty” and that is Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness of the Chillpak Hollywood Hour. Early on these guys were very supportive of the show and generous with their time and, over the years, we’ve become good friends. Their show is now in it’s 11th year and these guys not only have careers on their own from each other but they’ve made movies together as well, including a great dark comedy thriller called The Lady Killers. It will be screening in about a week in San Jose, California. One night only, on February 21st, at Club 3B. Strange TimesSuccotash has, on occasion, been a kind of conduit thorugh which people from one show have found out about and, eventually, connected with other shows. A case in point was Jabs, heard this show, making contact with Davian Dent in England who, at the time, had a very unique show called The Bitter Sound. Davian and Jabs put their heads together – a half a world apart from each other, mind you, and created a soundcast mini-series call The Kundalini Files, a kind of detective spoof. They also pulled in some other soundcasters on that one – other fine folks we have featured over the years here on the show. Here's a snippet from a recent episode of Davian’s other long-running show, Strange Times, featuring Davian, Samantha Pett and Kat Sorens. All three have been very friendly to our show and one of these days I’ve got to somehow meet these people and down some brews with them until we all pass out. Story WorthyAnother ardent supporter of this show has been a woman with a terrific show of her own, and that’s Christine Blackburn, co-host of the Story Worthy Podcast, along with Hannis Phinney. I’ve run into her almost every year at the Los Angeles Podcast Festival and she’s always been a great promoter and cheerleader. Some years she’s even dragged various comedians and soundcasters into the Podfest’s Podcast Lab and insisted that they sit down and do an interview with me. Story Worthy is a great storytelling show, with some great guests, and recently they had on comedian Johnno Wilson, who related a harrowing tale. Film ThreatAnother good friend to this show and who I have ended up hanging out with whenever I run into him out in the world is Chris Gore. When Succotash first started he was running PodCRASH, where his gimmick was to appear on other soundcasters shows, then play THOSE episodes as his own. In a way it was the ultimate cross-promotion. Once upon a time he had been the editor and publisher of Film Threat magazine, a great “alt” movie magazine and Chris has returned to that property, only now in website and soundcast form. Here’s a clip from his recent “Time’s Up At Sundance” epi from January with guests Natalia Winkleman and Jon Bernstein… Casa MirthThe Casa Mirth soundcast features the team-up of Dr. Norman Trousers and River Gambezi. Norman’s been a presence around here pretty much since we began Succotash and he’s part of the infamous Podcast Mafia that got started years ago with myself somehow ending up as the titular Podfather. (Although I believe that moniker was started by Eric Furniss of The FOONcast.) Trousers and Gambezi run a very sporadically-appearing show and, for the past four holiday seasons, they have produced these wild mashup Christmas productions. They’re scripted and then the boys draft fellow soundcasters from all over the world to voice the parts. I’m honored to have been included in these crazy shows and this past December Casa Mirth featured their own take on It’s A Wonderful Life, the Jimmy Stewart classic. I was asked to be the Narrator, which I pulled off rather nicely, I think. Illusionoid We head up to Toronto to hear from the cast of Illusionoid. Love these guys, who I got to interview fairly early into when we started. Paul Bates, Lee Smart, and Nug Nahrgang – the best name in soundcasting – were in San Francisco for the annual Improv Festival here and we got a chance to hang out. And being a longtime improvisor, I really took to their style of an improvised sci-fi anthonolgy series, based around the gimmick of mankind’s creation bent on the destruction of humans. We feature a glimpse at a transmission from the last episode of their 9th season last November. Ear GogglesJeremy, Aaron, and Stacy don’t soundcast all that often but they still drop an episode every now and then. I used to run into Jeremy and Stacy at the LA Podfest for the first few years but they stopped coming down from Seattle. We're featuring a ready-made clip I found on their homesite – one of their “bonus clips” from a show last year where Stacy plays with some toys, as she puts it. (If you go to their site, you can browse through their archives all the way back to 2005, which is when they started out as The Sibling Rivalry podcast.) Comedy Film NerdsA couple of other longtime soundcasters who have been very nice to me are Chris Mancini and Graham Elwood, the hosts of the Comedy Film Nerds soundcast. They are also two of the organizers of the Los Angeles Podcast Festival and have never been anything but welcoming, accommodating, and kind to me. It probably helped that I contributed to the Kickstarter campaign that paid for the first LA Podfest but, since then, they have invited me to moderate panels and be a guest on other panels. Here’s a clip from their episode 403 from last month, with guest Jon Reep. Quick QuestionI wanted to be sure to toss in a soundcast farewell to Travis Clark and Jonathan Sadowski, hosts of the Quick Question soundcast. When I first mentioned I was going to step away from Succotash, Travis messaged me to ask if it was his turn to “talk me off the ledge”, as he put it. That’s because a few years ago, he and his wife Brandi were considering hanging up Tiny Odd Conversations, the show they did together and I convinced them to hang in there as they had only hit their Epi50. And they did, for quite awhile. Eventually, Brandi got herself a new job that kept her crazy-busy and TOCpod eventually drained away. But then the Clarks got a new neighbor, Jonathan, and Travis discovered they had a lot in common. Mostly talking, judging from the amount of palavering that goes on during episodes of Quick Question. I had them on a few months ago from a chat we had at the LA Podfest. The Anti Social ShowFor our last clip of this Unfinal Succotash episode, we turn to a couple of the most ardent supporters of the show who started their own soundcast last year. Our very own Tyson Saner teamed up with one of our most supportive listeners, Hunter Block, and created The Anti Social Show. For the first 10 episodes, they were only on SoundCloud but now they’re on iTunes and other fine distribution points around the interwebs. This clip, harvested by Tyson himself, is from their Epi41, one of the first installments of 2018, entitled “Obscured By Sound”. And that is going to do it for Succotash under my command. We’ll be announcing when the first new episode of of the show is dropping, as soon as we figure out what we need to do to put all of the controls into the new host's hands. I will likely drop in from time to time, and I’m in the process of putting a whole new soundcast into production. I want to thank you for listening to this Unfinal episode of the show. For those of you who have been listening for a while, I can’t thank you enough for your support. And whether that describes you or you’re relatively new to the show, please subscribe and keep listening as show continues. I’m excited to see where our new host takes the show. Now, for the last time as your host, it’s my pleasure to ask you to please pass the Succotash. Goodbye. — Marc Hershon

On the final episode of the year—dropping a day early for Christmas!—it's the gang's live appearance at the 2017 Los Angeles Podcast Festival talking Constantine! Recorded at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel's Biltmore Bowl, this movie had the gang asking questions like: How can a person live above a bowling alley comfortably? Why not have an English actor play Constantine? And why didn't anyone tell poor Gavin Rossdale what "finger lickin' good" means? PLUS: Shia LaBeouf plays a role written for the legendary Ernest Borgnine (or David Johansen)!Constantine stars Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Djimon Hounsou, Peter Stormare, Gavin Rossdale, and Tilda Swinton—for some reason; directed by Francis Lawrence.

Ho ho ho, yes it’s me, Marc Hershon. Host and nerf herder for Epi161 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. This is a full-on Succotash Clips episode, with a couple of extra treats in store, as befits the holiday season. First up, gotta couple of like dates coming up. This very show has been invited to get onstage in the upcoming 17th Annual San Francisco Sketchfest once again. We’ll be at Piano Fight in the Tenderloin on Sunday, January 14th, at 5:30 PM. Our announcer, Bill Heywatt, will once again be live for this show and we’ll have some special guests. So special I don’t even know who they will be yet – gotta wait to see who’s hanging around from the Sketchfest as we get closer to the date. Admission is FREE but space is limited, so you can click here for your free tickets! Then a week later, at that same SF Sketchfest but at a different venue – the historic, magnificent Castro Theater - they will be doing a tribute screening of The Foot Fist Way, starring Danny McBride and directed by Jody Hill. It’s a hilarious low budget movie if you haven’t seen it, McBride’s first starring role – since he and Hill co-produced it, he had an in, you see. And both of those guys will be on hand and onstage for a live chat which I am honored to have been asked to moderate. That's on Sunday, January 21st, at 8 PM. So get over to SFSketchfest.com or, again, I’ve got the direct link to tickets right here. Also don’t forget that I’m working with Phil Leirness as the announcer on his less-than-a-year-old soundcast Los Angeles Breakfasts Club ON THE AIR. The December edition is up now and you can download ‘er from iTunes or from the homesite: http://LABreakfastClub.com. But now onto THIS show. Here’s the deal with this installment – the clips we’re playing were all pretty much harvested by our Associate Producer Tyson Saner for a show I was GOING to do back in October as a crossover episode with the guys from the Monster Party soundcast — Matt Weinhold, Larry Strothe, Shawn Sheridan and James Gonis. But Matt ended up having back surgery the week I was going to be in LA and we couldn’t pull the thing together. So before these clips start growing mold on them – or the digital equivalent – I figured we’d just do a Succotash Clips where we just play snippets from comedy soundcasts that are horror and sci-fi movie oriented. We’ve got The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, CadaverCast, Comedy Film Nerds, the Universal Monster Cast and The Star Wars Minute. Plus I’ll throw in a clip from Monster Party just give my pals over there some guilt feelings. In addition there's a Burst O’ Durst segment with political comedian and social commentator Will Durst. PLUS a visit to the Studio P wet bar in a new Boozin’ with Bill where Mr. Heywatt is going to mix up an unsavory tribute to Washington D.C. called the Swamp Drainer! And, of course, this whole magilla is brought to you Henderson’s new Holiday Pants. THE CLIPS Monster PartyHere’s a clip from the show responsible for this particular clip collection, Monster Party, and it's actually one of my favorite soundcasts. (You can tell because even with all the shows I have to listen to for THIS show AND my Splitsider.com reviews, I actually subscribe to this one!) This is from their latest drop, featuring a past guest to this show as their guest, and real life friend Rick Overton. The episode is entitled “Future Past” and looks at the future as depicted in films from the past. In this clip, the guys are going off about the way Star Trek thinks we might be going. Comedy Film NerdsWe love Comedy Film Nerds with Chris Mancini and Graham Elwood. In fact I just featured my chat with Chris from the recent Los Angeles Podcast Festival on our last episode. And while they don’t feature strictly sci-fi, monster, and horror movies on their show, they ARE pretty heavily into those genres. Back in their episode 384, the guys – along with guest Kevin Avery - get into a low budget crazy little movie called Dave Made A Maze, where they get into a little aside about none other than Rick Overton, who was just heard on the previous clip. Man, this show is getting’ meta! The Sci-Fi Movie PodcastThe next clip is from a very specific genre soundcast. The show is called The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast (although at their homesite their logo says it’s The Sci-Fi Movie AND TV Podcast…), hosted by Remi Lavictoire and Jonathan Colbon, a couple of film geeks from Canada. This clip is from a recent episode where they were getting into War for The Planet of the Apes. They’ve been around for a few years, so you will no doubt find their show propagated throughout Soundcast Land. Cadavercast Next up is a clip from a show that Tyson says is “delightful” called Cadavercast, a Father-Son Monster Movie Podcast. The hosts are a Dad, Jef Burnham, and his 5-year-old son Alistair. And with a 5-year-old behind the mic, trust me when I saw a horror movie soundcast has never been more adorable. This clip is from their Epi30 where they get into one on of my all time faves, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. Their homesite is actually just up on Soundcloud, and you can find the show on iTunes and other places you might expect to find soundcasts. Universal Monsters Cast There’s soundcast for specific movie genres, like monster movies, say. But then there are shows that get into sub-genres, too – such as the Universal Monsters Cast. First of all, I like that they just call it a “cast” instead of using the “P” word. Our associate producer really likes this show – says the hosts — Gillman Joel, Dr. Shock and Wolfman Josh — really stay on track with the discussion which, in this case, is all about The Mummy. In this clip, its about how Hammer Films treated the character, which came from the Universal corral of monsters. The Star Wars MinuteOne of the best-known and longest-running sci-fi soundcasts around has got to be The Star Wars Minute. It set the bar for micro-genre casts, in that Pete the Retailer (aka Peter Bonavita) and Alex Robinson decided to break down Star Wars in the geekiest way imaginable – devoting each episode to ONE MINUTE of the movie, from beginning to end, including the closing credits. And they’re been working their way through the entire franchise. Currently blazing their way through Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, they are up to minute 18 with guest commentator Chrysanthe Tan, a very talented musician/composer with, clearly, a streak of geek. BOOZIN' WITH BILL Here's Bill's latest recipe, Swamp Drainer, and after you try it you'll be asking yourself the same question I asked myself: Why? That's going to do it for Epi161 but before this clog ends, I have a question for you and, please, answer honestly: Have you been up to the podcast section of iTunes – that’s what they call soundcasts, of course — have you been up there to rate and review the Succotash Show? Of course you haven’t. I don’t blame you. No, wait. Yes, I do. But you can correct that easily enough by jumping up there right now to give us 5 stars and a short, pithy review. It really helps to get the word out there because our listing pops up higher in the pages and pages of soundcasts. If you’re in San Francisco during January don’t forget about our dates at SF Sketchfest and you can grab FREE tickets for the Sunday January 14th LIVE Succotash Show at 5:30 PM by clicking on the link up above. Hope to see you around. And, as always, thanks for passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
Welcome to the first of four special episodes recorded in the Podcast Lab during the 6th annual Los Angeles Podcast Festival at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles, CA, October 6-8, 2017. Rumors abounded this year that it might be the final LA Podcast Festival, but we're keeping our fingers crossed for another one next year, so we can again bring you our annual compilation episodes from the event. Yes, it’s me, Marc Hershon. Host and haberdasher for Epi160 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. It’s been a couple of weeks since we last dropped a ‘sode. Apologies, but life gets busy. Suffice to say we’re back. And we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag so it’s kind of half Succotash Clips and half Succotash Chats this time around. On the Clips side we have a couple of snippets uploaded to us by soundcasters themselves. A bit of a show called Nothing's Good and another from a soundcast called Pretty Gross. Over in the Chats department, I’ve got some interviews leftover from the 6th Los Angeles Podcast Festival that took place I nearly October. Chris Mancini, one of the co-founders of the Podfest, Jonathan Sadowski and Travis Clark from the Quick Question soundcast, Murray Valeriano from the Road Stories soundcast, and Chris Gore, who stopped by and we did kind of a simulcast – the interview has already been heard on his Film Threat soundcast. In addition, we have a double dose of our Burst O’ Durst segment with political comedian and social commentator Will Durst. Get over to http://WillDurst.com to get a line on Durst Case Scenario, his one man show that’s been extended, playing every Tuesday night at the Marsh Theater in San Francisco. And also where he’s headlining with his comedy stylings. Plus the Big Fat Year End Kiss Off Show he does every year will be falling into place about now, and you can get times and places where that will be up on his homesite. You can also follow Will on Twitter @WillDurst and on Facebook, too! The whole shootin’ match is brought to you by the good folks at Henderson’s Pants, featuring their Turkey Trousers just in time for Thanksgiving. Gobble 'em up! SUCCOTASH LIVE AT LAST Before we get further into this episode, I wanted to let you know that Succotash will be having the first LIVE episode we’ve done since this year’s San Francisco Sketchfest. It’s going to be at next year’s Sketchfest, on Sunday, January 14th, 5:30 PM at Piano Fight in downtown San Francisco. I’m not sure which guests we’ll have yet. Waiting to see whose in town that weekend. But I will tell you this – it may be the LAST episode of Succotash, at least in it’s current form. CLIPS Nothing's GoodWe heard from the Nothing’s Good soundcast when a guy named Adam direct-uploaded their premiere episode to our Hightail link with this note: “Here's the first episode of my podcast. It's a story telling podcast about messed up things that have happened to you. Use whatever you'd like from it.” There’s been about half dozen episodes since the one this clip came from, entitled “Slimy Peaches”. And so far there’s not a lot of information on their homesite. The About link reads: “Stories of failure and regret, by the worlds foremost regrettable failures. A storytelling podcast of things gone awry.” Pretty GrossGrabbing another clip out of the Hightail direct upload bucket. This time we have a chunk of a relatively new show, call Pretty Gross, hosted by Alyssa and Kayla. Here’s the note they included: “Hey there! Here's a clip from Pretty Gross, episode 2, "Google It!: A Pretty Gross Halloween Special." In it, Alyssa & Kayla talk about their recollections of learning about womanhood, and how they don't want any of those questions answered by their moms. Enjoy!” That’s going to do it for epi160 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. The next installment is going to feature a bunch of clip from horror and sci-fi movie soundcasts. Associate Producer Tyson Saner and I had harvested like 10 clips which I was going to use for aspecial show with the Monster Party soundcast guys, but that never happened So before these clips pass their expiration dates, I figured we better make use of them. Until next time, thanks for passing the Succotash. — Marc Hershon

Brandi and Joe couldn't get together to record an episode this week, so Joe met up with Janelle, the Middle Sis from the Sippin' Sisters podcast at the Los Angeles Podcast Festival and discuss... well Feminism sort of. Yes, it's me - Marc Hershon - your host and executive producer for Epi 159 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Usually we'd either be presenting a Succotash Clips or a Succotash Chats installment and, while I guess this is more Chats than Clips, it's a lot more informal than usual. That's because I recorded it from Studio F (my Fiat 500C) as I was trundling down Interstate 5 from San Francisco to Los Angeles to this year's Los Angeles Podcast Festival. The quality is about as good as you might expect, considering I'm in a tiny convertible car speaking into a digital recorder. But, as our friend in soundcasting Phil Leirness from Chillpak Hollywood Hour says, how much are you paying for this? We're featuring an interview I did with a writer and entrepreneur, RIck Karlsruher, who self-published a very funny novel, Standoff: How the Cold War Really Ended. We talk about the book, his attempts turn it into a movie, and some other adventures as well. This installment features a double dose of our Burst O' Durst with political comedian and social commentator Will Durst. And in lieu of having access to our TweetSack, I play a brief message that came into our Succotash Hotline from listener and soundcaster Hunter Block, who co-hosts The Anti Social Show with our own Associate Producer Tyson Saner. I also have a in-transit speakerphone chat with longtime friend-of-Succotash (and friend in real life) Travis Clark. We talk about his new soundcast, Quick Question, that he co-hosts with Jonathan Sadowski. We also talk about his old soundcast, Tiny Odd Conversations, that he used to do with his wife Brandi Clark. And we stir the pot about a couple of other things before I hang up and get back to the business of driving south. This episode of Succotash is brought to you by Henderson's Pet Pants, BTW — your pet may not be embarrassed running around with their butt hanging out but, really, come on. And that's it. I'm actually posting this episode from the Podcast Lab at the Los Angeles Podcast Festival so disregard any of the events that I'm talking about that will have passed by the time this show reaches your ears. But feel free to enjoy the rest of it! And I hereby promise that the next 'sode of this soundcast, Epi160, will be dropping WAY sooner than this one did. — Marc Hershon
