In science it's completely normal to wonder what would happen if you altered one variable or another – that's what you do when you test a hypothesis – but when it comes to the choices we make in our lives, there will always be unanswered questions. In this week's episode, both our storytellers share stories about their lives' fork-in-the-road moments. Part 1: As a child who loves biology and has Caribbean immigrant parents, Calvin Cato feels pressure to become a doctor. Part 2: Shane Hanlon can't help but compare his life choices to those of his hometown best friend. Calvin S. Cato got his comedic start with the Wesleyan University stand-up comedy troupe Punchline and then transferred his unique brand of humor to New York City in 2006. He has performed all across the United States and has even crossed the border into Canada. His television appearances include the Game Show Network, Oxygen's My Crazy Love, National Geographic's Brain Games, and an unaired pilot for Vice Media called Emergency Black Meeting. In 2017, Calvin was named one of Time Out New York's Queer Comics of Color to Watch Out For. His comedy has been featured in numerous festivals including San Francisco Sketchfest, Austin's Out of Bounds Comedy Festival, Brooklyn Pride, Gotham Storytelling Festival, FlameCon, and the Women in Comedy Festival. In addition, you may have heard him overshare on popular podcasts including Keith and The Girl, The Beige Philip Show, RISK!, Guys We F*cked, Las Culturistas, Tinder Tales or the video game themed podcast he co-produced called the Playable Characters Podcast (featured in AV Club and Splitsider). Most recently, Calvin was published in Kweendom, an anthology of essays by queer comedians and entertainers. Published in early 2021, the book is available on Amazon and other online book retailers. There you are! Right on time. I just got here myself, actually. Yes, it's me, Marc Hershon, creator, executive producer, and your host for this Episode 322 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. And what does that mean? Our main focus is to shine a favorable light on the world of comedy soundcast – or podcasts, if you insist – usually by playing clips of a variety of shows but sometimes by chatting with fellow soundcasters or other people in the business of show. When I say “we”, that's not the royal “we”, I'm referring to myself and my kindly, well-versed co-host Tyson Saner. Unlike traditional co-hosts, Tyson and I don't often appear together on our episodes. Instead, we've found that we can crank out these shows every week if we divide and conquer the task of listening to soundcasts and clipping out bite-sized segments to share with you. Last week, for example, Tyson was hosting Epi321, entitled “Summer Close-Out Clips” and dealt out a trio of clips from Last Week on Earth with Ben Gleib, Best Friends Back, Alright!, and The Fckry with Leslie Jones and Lenny Marcus. In case you were somewhere last week where soundcasts aren't available, you can still get Episode 321 at a wide array of soundcast distribution points – including Apple & Google Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Amazon Music, Audible, iHeart Radio, PodBay, Podchaser and, of course, always on our homesite at SuccotashShow.com, where you'll find our entire archive of 11 and a half years of shows. As for this week's show, which I'm calling “Interesting Behaviors”, I've got clips from My Neighbors Are Dead, The Doug Stanhope Podcast, Sarah Halstead's Drinking During Business Hours, and Were You Raised By Wolves? This episode is brought to you by our fictitious, non-paying sponsor Henderson's Pants and their seasonally appropriate Leaf Behind Pants. I've also got the TweetSack, where we acknowledge folks that has used our @Succotashshow handle in their socials – during which, by the way, I'll be reading an actual email which we just go in. And there's even a call into our Succotash & Runaway Truck Hotline we'll get to today. CLIPS My Neighbors Are DeadThe last time we checked in with the soundcast called My Neighbors Are Dead was a little over a hundred episodes ago, when Tyson clipped it in Epi219. I actually reviewed the show back in 2017 for the then-Splitsider.com and a quote from my review is STILL up on their homesite at MyNeighborsAreDead.com, where I wrote, “I wish I'd thought of that!” And I do. The brainfever of Adam Peacock, MNAD chats up the lesser known characters from scary movies. He's had a lot of comics and others pop in to voice the horror movie side characters, but recently Patton Oswalt (who I SWEAR I will get in front of the Succotash mics one of these days) was on as truck dispatcher Frank Ludd and his take on one of his company's hapless drivers, Ed, who made the mistake of stopping to pick up a “hippie chick” as he put it, and barely escaped with his life. Our clip covers how part of it went down… Sarah Halstead's Drinking During Business Hours Normally Tyson and I come across the soundcasts we clip pretty much the same way you and people you know might: We scan the scads and scads of shows that are out there and we see what captures our fancy about one show or another. Sometimes it's a familiar name or face, occasionally it's shows that share a similar theme, and often it's a bit of a crap shoot. There are plenty that I've listened to that I just end up not finding a viable clip. Or the sound quality's off. Or whatever. In the case of this next clip, however, it was a comedian buddy of mine, Rich Chassler, and the surprise announcement via his socials that he had proposed to comedian Sarah Halstead. That's when I learned that in addition to soon becoming the future Mrs. Chassler – I don't know if she's actually changing her name – that she's also the host of Sarah Halstead's Drinking During Business Hours. Her usual M.O. on the show is to crack open a bottle of vino and kick back with what she called a ‘diverse line of creatives about their fife's journey, passions, and what might lead them to drink during business hours.” In this case, after having taken a couple week off from dropping new episodes, Sarah is back this week for Episode 47 and her guest is the future Mister Halstead…Rich Chassler. The Doug Stanhope PodcastWe're going to revisit another show and this one we haven't clipped since 2013. It's The Doug Stanhope Show with the titular Doug Stanhope. Truly an original comedy voice, Doug also take a great interest in the folks he talks to and recently for his 499th episode back in August he invited comedian Kristine Levine into his studio, affectionately called the The Funhouse, in Bisbee, Arizona. Entitled “Kristine's Wad of Gum is Cancer”, they get into her bout with and upcoming operation for stomach cancer. Our clip is from early in the show, when Kristine talks about her wait problem and other issues. (There's a GoFundMe for Kristine. And Doug Stanhope has a new audio book out on Audible.com called “No Encore For The Donkey”.) Were You Raised By Wolves? Our last clip this week deals with the idea of etiquette and how to handle yourself mixed company. Hosts Nick Leighton and Leah Bonnema have a virtual grab bag of sticky social situations and they break out some usually pretty practical advice how to deal with stuff. Their episode from last week was called “High Tea, Overcoming Terrible Handwriting, Tipping for Gas in new Jersey, and More”, and the clip I've snipped deals with a few of the finer points of auto etiquette. If you'd like to write to me or my co-host Tyson Saner, it's SO easy! Just email me at m-a-r-c@SuccotashShow.com or Tyson at t-y-s-o-n@SuccotashShow.com and who knows? We may read YOUR email on the show! Remember to catch my partner in soundcasting, Tyson Saner, in this same feed next week for episode 323. Oh, and I almost forgot! I'm appearing on an episode of the Legal Geeks soundcast this week. Not sure when it drops but that's show show with real lawyers, headed up by friend-of-the-Succotash and past guest Josh Gilliland and Jessica Mederson, talking about legal issues that crop up in comic books, movies, and other not-real-world situations. They did an episode about last week's fifth episode of She-Hulk on the Disney Channel when the main character gets sued by her nemesis, Titania, for infringing on the She-Hulk trademark. Since I actually work in the branding business when I'm not clipping soundcasts, I got called in as a kind of “expert witness” as the legal eagles batted that case around. Okay, last thing: The next time you're at the grocery store and you find yourself reaching for the last bottle of Clamato juice at the same time as someone, look ‘em square in the eye and ask: “Have you heard anything good lately?” If their answer is “No”, `won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon Other than that, if you find yourself pushing a cart down the aisle in your neighborhood grocery store and a kindly senior citizen is heading your way from the other end of the aisle and stops you to ask, “Have you heard anything good lately?”, won't you please pass the Succotash? Marc Hershon

Enjoy Jon Reep's full interview with comedian Sean Conroy! They talk comedy inspirations, standup versus improv comedy, and how comedians are dealing with the current world situation.Acerbic comedian Sean Conroy is self-lacerating and constantly annoyed- at himself and everybody else- but always manages to sneak in a healthy dose of silliness and joyful charm. Splitsider.com describes him as “intimidatingly smart, intimidatingly funny, and just plain intimidating.”He’s a multi-disciplined comedy tour-de-force. As a stand-up, Sean’s performed on Conan and Comedy Central. As an improviser, he was a founding member of the first ever house team at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, legendary improv group The Swarm, and has been a regular in the UCB’s flagship show ASSSSCAT for almost twenty years (in fact they asked him to perform with them when they recorded their live show for Shout Factory, still available on DVD). He’s been a television writer for over a decade (Key & Peele, Crossballs, Dog Bites Man, Gentlemen Lobsters, Players, Love Inc.), most recently finishing up his third season as head writer of Adult Swim’s cult favorite Mr. Pickles, about a dog who’s sort of like Lassie (except he worships Satan, and is a serial killer). He’s hosted over 325 episodes of his podcast, The Long Shot (which the AV Club calls “rollicking” and “a consistent delight”). He enjoys good coffee, mediocre whiskey, and ship novels. Check out his website at seanconroy.com, follow his 2017 tour at worldssmallestgiant.com, and follow him on IG and Twitter at @seanconroy.

Would you ever wear boots on the first date? In this episode, Kerry Coddett and I talk about our high school and college lives. Plus, Kerry reveals her first date ever and her worst date ever. Kerry Coddett [Cah-dit] is a New York-based stand-up comedian, actress, and writer. Touted as “inimitable” by The Huffington Post and as “a rising star” by The Interrobang, she has also been featured in numerous publications, including Entertainment Weekly, Mic.com, Elite Daily, Splitsider, Elle.com, Buzzfeed, and Salon. Growing up, Kerry was never shy – she always wanted to be an actress and performer. In school, she was outstanding and even got to skip two grades. At first, Kerry got into the gifted school for nerds. However, she physically fought every single day in high school and ended up going to four different schools. Kerry fought for her respect – she didn’t want anyone to feel like they could get away with saying negative things about her. She only fought girls for the record, and doesn’t hit people as an adult. Adults handle shit differently, people will call the cops now – high school kids don’t call the police. Kerry speaks about briefly joining a gang - she wasn’t in super deep. Kerry just stopped getting off the subway at that stop and took her ass home. Some people have trouble getting out of a gang, but Kerry didn’t have any issues. She didn’t bang super hard; she only dabbled in gang life. When you get deeper into gang activity, it’s because of your neighborhood. The people in her gang weren’t in Kerry’s neighborhood, so it had nothing to do with her. At the time, Kerry couldn’t even tell you why she joined a gang. Most likely, it was because of her high school boyfriend. In college, Kerry had two boyfriends – those were the only two people she was having sex with. Kerry has never killed it and hasn’t had sex for ten months; she wrote that joke two years ago. Online dating isn’t right for Kerry; she doesn’t like texting, so she can’t get to know someone that way. She asked one guy to call her, and it just fell apart. Kerry thinks that people shouldn’t waste time with online messaging. Then, Kerry explains why she doesn’t want to date a comic. Stay tuned as Kerry speaks about her fashion career, her first date ever, and her worst date ever. In this Episode: [ 2:30 ] About Kerry Codett [ 8:20 ] About beating kids up in high school [ 26:10 ] How Kerry got out of her gang life [ 29:50 ] Kerry’s college experience as a responsible teen [ 36:45 ] Why Kerry hates online dating [ 40:50 ] About Kerry’s fashion career [ 45:00 ] Kerry’s first date ever and her worst date ever Quotes: “I did two and a half years of high school in two semesters.” “I have never killed it.” “I have never dated a comic.” “You don’t have to love everybody you’re with.” “I’m glad I wore boots on a first date.” Links Mentioned: Kerry’s Website: http://www.kerrycoddett.com/ Kerry’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/Overfab/ Kerry’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/Overfab Kerry’s Podcast: http://www.kerrycoddett.com/podcast Email me: emmasbunker@gmail.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/emmawillmannshow/support

Jessica Pilot has one of the best jobs in the business. She finds stand-up comedians for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and helps them perfect their set for television. That means watching as much stand-up comedy as she possibly can, at festivals, in clubs, or, every once in a while, in a pizza shop. As I am recording this voiceover now, she is out scouting at the Just For Laughs Festival. It's a dream job in a lot of ways, but it is still a job. There is a lot of work involved in getting a five or six-minute set together, and it can take months before a comic gets on the show. Pilot is also a writer, who has been published in Splitsider, Esquire, Vanity Fair, and other publications, and she did a video series for the Village Voice called This Is Stand-Up, which caught the eye of her eventual boss at The Late Show. We talk about a couple of things she's got coming up – an essay for Splitsider and a new project on dangerous comedy with frequent Sacha Baron Cohen collaborator Larry Charles which should be out on Netflix next year. Plus you can catch her on the second season of the CNN documentary series The History of Comedy on August 19. We also got into details about how she works with comedians, what might make a comic right for the Late Show, and how much comedy means to Pilot. It's a barometer for mental health – if her sense of humor fails her, that's when she knows something's wrong. Luckily, that is not often the case. We start off talking about how not being a performer herself helps her do her job better. Find out more about Pilot on her Web site or follow her on Twitter. This week's featured track is “El Camino De Oro” from Walter Salas-Humara's upcoming solo album, Walterio, out August 10 on Rhyme & Reason Records. Salas-Humara leads the pioneering Americana band The Silos. If you know the band, then you likely have a long history with Salas-Humara's mix of roots and punk, dating back to the mid-to-late 80s when the band first surfaced. If you don't know them, then you're in for a treat. Go back and pick up any album in their catalogue, really, but especially Cuba or the self-titled album. If you can find it, give a listen to The Setters, his collaboration with Alejandro Escovedo and Michael Hall. In those early days, the genre went by a bunch of different names – alt.country or cowpunk. The magazine that best covered the music, No Depression, used to change its tagline every issue. What a lot of those bands, including the Silos, found was the common ground between punk and country. The immediacy of a small group of people playing their hearts out. It helps if you're a fantastic songwriter, and Salas-Humara certainly is that. He has constantly pushed forward in his abilities with melody and arrangement, but he has never lost touch with raw rock and roll or the sense of romance that has made that early work endure throughout the decades. You can hear that in this track, “El Camino De Oro,” which translates into “The Golden Path.” I haven't heard the full album yet, but this is an extremely good omen.
Every so often I do these "bonus episodes" where I talk to a showbiz professional about the actual nuts and bolts of different topics in the Entertainment Industry in an attempt to demystify these things. And on today's episode, I have a wide-ranging and frank talk about comedy journalism with Vulture.com Senior Editor and host of the new Good One Podcast Jesse David Fox. The conversation starts out with how his new podcast is really about the phenomenology of stand-up, and from there we get into the tangled friend/business relationships that make up showbiz, how they're difficult to navigate for neurotics like us, and how comedy journalism fits in to the "business" part of showbiz. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
