In this episode, the Brian interviews Neil from the UK about his fascination with Bigfoot and his detailed analysis of the BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization) database. Neil shares his journey from a casual interest in the paranormal, sparked by movies like 'Harry and the Hendersons', to a deep dive into Bigfoot data analytics. Utilizing his extensive experience in HR and data analysis, he examines geographical, seasonal, and environmental trends in Bigfoot sightings, highlighting intriguing patterns such as the higher likelihood of sightings in October and on Saturdays. They discuss the reliability of witness reports and the potential influence of pop culture on people's accounts. Neil emphasizes the need for more comprehensive, categorized data and explores the possibility of applying similar analytical models to other regions like the UK. The discussion also touches upon the potential biases in the BFRO data and the underreporting of sightings in other, less formal platforms. Neil concludes by expressing his ongoing interest in expanding his research and creating a statistical model to support the existence of relic hominids in regions like Wales.Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Book Sasquatch Unleashed The Truth Behind The LegendLeave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsVisit Untold Radio AMVisit HIMS.COMBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

The Beulah Show | Honorary Santa, Pts. 1-2 | December 24, 1953Originally portrayed by a white male actor, Marlin Hurt, Beulah Brown first appeared in 1939 when Hurt introduced and played the character on the Hometown Incorporated radio series and in 1940 on NBC radio's Show Boat series. In 1943, Beulah moved over to That's Life and then became a supporting character on the popular Fibber McGee and Molly radio series in March 1944.On July 2, 1945, Beulah was spun off into her own radio show on CBS, The Marlin Hurt and Beulah Show, sponsored by Tums. Hurt was still in the role of Beulah, and also played the voice of Beulah's boyfriend, Bill Jackson. Beulah was employed as a housekeeper and cook for the Henderson family: father Harry, mother Alice and son Donnie. Rounding out the cast was Oriole Winston, the housekeeper for the family next door to the Hendersons. After Hurt died of a heart attack in 1946, he was replaced by another white actor, Bob Corley, and the series was retitled The Beulah Show, which ran on ABC as a sustaining program from February 24 to August 20, 1947.When African-American actress Hattie McDaniel took over the role on November 24, 1947, with the program returning to CBS. She earned $1,000 a week for the first season, doubled the ratings of the original series and pleased the NAACP which was elated to see a historic first: a black woman as the star of a network radio program.McDaniel continued in the role until she became ill in 1952 and was replaced by Lillian Randolph, who was in turn replaced for the 1953–54 radio season by her sister, Amanda Randolph.: : : : :My other podcast channels include: DRAMA X THEATER -- SCI FI x HORROR -- MYSTERY X SUSPENSE -- VARIETY X ARMED FORCES -- THE COMPLETE ORSON WELLESEnjoy my podcast? Navigating the Age of Conspiracy Theories: Insights from the Nightly RantKey TakeawaysConspiracy Theories in Politics: The podcast dissects how conspiracy theories, such as those surrounding Trump, influence public perception and political discourse.Cultural Obsessions with the Unexplained: Exploration of long-standing conspiracy theories like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster demonstrates society's fascination with the unknown.Everyday Interactions and Theories: Personal anecdotes in the podcast underscore how conspiracy theories permeate everyday life, from wedding dress alterations to mini-golf outings.Conspiracy Theories in Politics: Shaping Public PerceptionIn today's hyper-connected world, conspiracy theories have a way of rapidly gaining traction and influencing public opinion. As discussed in the podcast episode, Mike and Torya delve into the recent assassination attempt on Trump and the ensuing speculation."But it seems like in the last few weeks, the world's gone crazy. You got Trump being an assassination attempt on him, two bullets whizzing within centimeters of his head," Mike comments, highlighting how such events quickly become mired in conspiracy theories.Politicians are frequent targets for these narratives, which can often obscure the truth and sow divisive misinformation. The co-hosts refer to credible sources like the Vegas PD to differentiate verified facts from speculative rumors. Yet, despite substantial evidence, conspiracy theories persist, driven by the complex interplay of media, politics, and human psychology.Torya's insights further muddy the waters:"If it was a setup, the sniper would have been shooting blanks, and Trump would have had a blood packet." This quote emphasizes the penetrative power of conspiracy theories, where even logical scenarios become entangled in elaborate storylines. These discussions illuminate the broader implication that conspiracy theories do not exist in a vacuum. They have tangible effects on political processes and the electorate's mindset. Addressing these theories requires not just debunking myths, but also fostering critical thinking and media literacy among the public.Cultural Obsessions with the Unexplained: Bigfoot and the Loch Ness MonsterBeyond political conspiracies, the podcast also delves into cultural phenomena like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster, demonstrating society's enduring fascination with the mysterious and unexplained."There are a ton of documentaries about Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster. The Loch Ness monster is real, so don't disguise," Mike asserts humorously, blending skepticism with lighthearted belief. These mythical creatures serve as the perfect metaphor for wider societal tendencies to search for meaning or hidden truths in a complex world. The perpetual allure of these stories showcases a collective human drive to explore and understand beyond the visible spectrum of our daily lives. In a lighter vein, Torya recalls:"Harry and the Hendersons is one of the most glorious movies ever." This nostalgia underscores how myths and legends are perpetuated through media, shaping cultural narratives and personal beliefs.Transcending generations, these cultural conspiracies morph into modern-day spectacles, fueled by documentaries, films, and discussions. They highlight how the thirst for the sensational and the unexplained is a fundamental aspect of human nature. The podcast episode underscores how every society has its myths, serving both as entertainment and explorations into the collective psyche.Everyday Interactions and Theories: The Personal Side of ConspiracyWhile political and cultural conspiracy theories attract widespread attention, the podcast brings to light how these theories infiltrate everyday life. Mike and Torya share personal anecdotes that reveal the pervasiveness of conspiracy thinking in common interactions.Torya recounts a particularly vivid example from her own life, involving the individual who altered her wedding dress:"She's a special kind of crazy. On and on about how this Joe Biden isn't the real Joe Biden and that they'd had the real Joe Biden killed like twelve years ago." The surreal nature of this encounter underscores how conspiracy theories can appear in the most personal and unexpected contexts.Mike also reflects on the impact of public discourse through social media, explaining why he avoids comment threads:"I'm at the point now where I'm not commenting on social media anymore. I'm done. Because people drive me nuts. The everyday interactions where these theories emerge demonstrate their impact on personal relationships and social trust.Interestingly, even a simple mini-golf outing can entail a discussion involving conspiracy theories, as the anecdote about the Kiss-themed mini-golf course shows:Torya eagerly notes, "If we're gonna go to a mini-golf video, I want to go to all the mini-golf places," demonstrating an intersection of personal passion and broader cultural engagements. This personal touch serves to humanize conspiracy theories, showing they are not just abstract or grand-scale hypotheses but something that colors the fabric of everyday life.Traditional media and modern-day interactions both require us to critically examine the narratives we encounter regularly. These discussions serve as a reminder that conspiracy theories are both a persistent and pervasive element of modern life, influencing politics, culture, and personal interactions. “It was easy for me to say to people ‘your stories are valuable' but when I would turn that lens on myself, I was tongue-tied and embarrassed.” As the founder of Wonderwell Press, a non-fiction publishing company, Maggie Langrick has been a champion of writers for years; in fact she was a huge influence in the development of Keri and Kelly's upcoming book, Whatever the Hell You Want (coming in October!). But while Maggie was helping everyone else find their voice, she was actively repressing her own, because, as she tells us, she felt like it was “weird…in the wrong way”. So when a cancer diagnosis derailed her ambitious business plans, Maggie was forced to finally slow down. And that's when she realized that she actually had a lot to say, if she would only stop discarding her ideas before she'd even explored them.Today, Maggie is a writer, a podcast host, and a writing coach who helps people dig into their own creativity and discover the incredible power of losing the shame and telling their own stories. In this episode Maggie tells how she confronted her self-judgement and learned to listen to her own voice. She also shares what a “full-body ick” is really telling you.About Maggie LangrickMaggie Langrick is a writer, public speaker, media entrepreneur, and host of The Selfish Gift podcast. This month Lee takes a look at music from films about possibly the world's most famous cryptid, the Sasquatch - or as it/they are better known in pop and general culture: Bigfoot. There are just so many films, especially in the last thirty years or so, that the list is focused on the real peak period of interest, the 1970s and 1980s. Even then this list threatened to be much larger than it ended up being, but a lot of the music was impossible to source. Still, Lee feels this list is large enough to pay proper tribute to that mythical(?) hairy giant in the woods. --Main Theme from "Bigfoot" (1970) --Richard Podolor --The Legend of Boggy Creek from "The Legend of Boggy Creek" (1972) --Chuck Bryant & Earl E. Kenny writes "I had an encounter in 2005 about a week after hurricane Katrina. I'm from a small town about an hour north of New Orleans called Ponchatoula. We didn't get any structural damage but we did get a lot of downed trees. I was about ten years old and living with my grandparents. For the next couple of weeks after the storm me and my grandpa would clear as much of the trees and other crap out of the yard. After a few days we were starting to run out of clean clothes so my grandma had me go out to the pond in our backyard to get some water so that she could boil up and wash some clothes in this big 55 gal pot we had (typically used for crawfish) because we still didn't have any power. I didn't think much of it and went out there with some buckets. For some backstory we only lived about 3 miles aways from Manchac Swamp and were surrounded by pine forest except for the 7 acres of land we lived on which was clear except for about 30 pecan trees. Anyways, when I went down the bank I heard a bunch of noise like trees crashing from the other side of the pond. I started watching over there and then what I thought was a bear came out of the woods and stopped at the opposite side of the bank. I knew we had a few black bears in the swamp but had never seen any so I just stood still to watch it. After what felt like a few minutes I saw it reach into the water and snag up a catfish (cats were the only fish we kept stocked in the pond). Being a 10 y/o who loved nature I thought that was pretty cool until it stood up and stretched. The kind of way someone who just woke up would with its arms reaching up to the sky. I could see that it still had the catfish in its hand. Seeing that thing stand up I froze. I don't think it ever noticed me because as soon as it got done stretching it simply turned around and went right back the way it came. After a few minutes when I couldn't hear it anymore I just ran inside and needless to say we didn't get any laundry washed that night. I never saw or heard anything else after that but yeah that's my story and just thought that I would share.”   Dusty writes "I've been thinking about writing you for a while now but haven't committed to the idea yet; well here goes. I have had many strange encounters with paranormal and supposedly "unknown" or at least "unpublished" entities. I had a sasquatch road crossing encounter when I was a kid. It was pretty basic, it just ran across the road in the middle of the night while I was out with a cousin of mine. I was 12, and my mom had passed away in March of 2000, and this encounter was close to the 4th of July. After my mom died I was kind of on my own most of the time, and would get dumped off with various people from time to time because I wasn't welcome at "home". Life was pretty traumatic at the time looking back, and maybe that's why that encounter didn't really stick with me to be honest. It happens at night, probably around 0100-0300 in the morning, I had been with an older cousin of mine who was more of a child than I ever realized, and he never really grew up. But when you're 12 and life goes tits up you don't think about those things. I would hang out with him and his drunken friends a lot and cruise back roads and things like that. I started learning to drive because they're getting drunk and stupid and I'd drive people home. We were going to his house from a local lake one night, and a sasquatch just crossed the road in front of us, probably in 3 east steps, and walked into a big field headed for a creek. I turned in my seat and watched it for a few seconds. We made it to the highway and turned and headed for town in shock. We made it to his house and I didn't think I slept much, and I was just flabbergasted the next few days. But nobody cared to notice, and my cousin was so drunk and hungover he didn't remember what happened. The creature was massive, bulky, tall, upright Harry and the Hendersons looking critter. It was a breathtaking experience and it happened so quickly that it almost didn't register for a while what we saw. We both just looked at each other, wide eyed and pale as could be. I remember saying we just saw a bigfoot!!! But that was about the end of that encounter. I went into the Marine Corps at 17, and was stationed in Washington DC in late 2006, at a ceremonial unit that marches funerals in Arlington, Presidential ceremonies, among other important ceremonial jobs for the Marone Corps. Our barracks was "out in town" as we didn't have a formal "base" it is just a small post just north of the navy yard. It is the oldest post in the Corps, and has been in place since 1801. During the war of 1812 when the white house was burned by the British, the Marine barracks and Navy Yard were attacked and the Marine barracks supposedly burned down. From the stories I've heard several Marines were killed in the collapsed barracks. One night while on duty I was walking down the lower parking area, an underground secure parking garage under the barracks. I heard screaming and yelling coming from the locked, heavy steel door that closed off the electrical equipment room for the barracks. A secure concrete room with a heavy steel door. It sounds like dozens of people inside screaming and yelling to get out, rifles slamming on the door from the inside, and then it just stopped. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end, the temp dropped and it was so scary down there I just took off running. I hot the stairs well closest to me and ran up several flights of stairs in dress shoes, which isn't easy to do. I made it to my duty post and didn't leave for the rest of the night. Another night I encountered another spirit down there. Another "barracks ghost story" for which there was no shortage. A young girl had been run over one night playing with her ball on the ramp between parking levels. I was on duty walking the lower parking, and as I got closer to the ramp I could hear little feet slapping the concrete, a small girl giggling and a ball bouncing up and down the ramp. She was headed down the ramp to me as I ran past. That was the last time I was ever down there after dark alone."

Billie Henderson, along with her husband Tom Henderson, is part of the cowboy mounted shooting community. Tom achieved the amateur world champion title at the 2017 AQHA Cowboy Mounted Shooting World Championships in Houston. His success is largely attributed to his horse, Rojos Klassy Fox, a 2013 bay roan stallion bred by Sam Schoultz and Ken Matzner of Fort Collins, Colorado. Interestingly, the Hendersons acquired Rojos Klassy Fox after a fortunate turn of events. When they went to look at the colt, they discovered that a vet was sewing up an eye injury the colt had sustained in the stall. Fortunately, the vet believed the injury wouldn't affect the colt's vision, allowing the Hendersons to purchase him within their budget. They affectionately named him “Stitch” to commemorate this unique circumstance. Billie initially gun-broke him as a weanling, and Tom took over the reins for cowboy mounted shooting. Tom's enthusiasm for this sport is evident – he hasn't swung a rope in two years due to the addictive nature of mounted shooting!

Bigfoot is an instantly recognizable figure. Through the decades, this elusive primate has been featured in movies and books, on coffee mugs, beer koozies, car polish, and CBD oil. Which begs the question: what is it about Bigfoot that's caught hold of our imaginations? Journalist and self-diagnosed skeptic John O'Connor is fascinated by Sasquatch. In The Secret History of Bigfoot: Field Notes on a North American Monster (Sourcebooks, 2024), he embarks on a quest through the North American wilds in search of Bigfoot, its myth and meaning. Alongside an eccentric cast of characters, he explores the zany and secretive world of "cryptozoology," tracking Bigfoot through ancient folklore to Harry and the Hendersons, while examining the forces behind our ever-widening belief in the supernatural. As O'Connor treks through the shrouded forests of the Pacific Northwest, listens to firsthand accounts, and attends Bigfoot conventions, he's left wondering―what happens when the lines between myth and reality blur? Perfect for fans of Bill Bryson and Douglas Preston, and with sharp wit and an adventurous spirit, this heartfelt exploration of a cornerstone of American folklore unpacks why we believe in the things that we do, what that says about us, and how it shapes our world. John O'Connor was born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and attended the creative writing program at Columbia University, where he wrote his thesis on competitive eating. His writing has appeared in The Believer, Quarterly West and Gastronomica, among other publications. Daniel Moran earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in History from Drew University. As if the last few years were not strange enough, the United States Congress recently held hearings on the subject of UFOs. As NBC News reported, numerous claims were made by those called before the subcommittee, including by former military or intelligence personnel.  Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this otherwise earth-shattering story was how it has largely been greeted, at least on social media, with a collective “meh.” If so much information was kept hush-hush for so many years, why the sudden transparency now? Isn't this just another chapter in red herrings tossed out to distract us from what's “really” going on?   As tempting as it is to think of these hearings as an unaired episode of The X-Files, the virtue of stories like this, and of the whole genre of sci-fi, is that they bring up questions about the deeper things of life. Who are we? Are we alone in the universe? What would it mean if we weren't? What makes us special as human beings?   Noted sci-fi writer Arthur C. Clarke famously said, “Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.” Religious people are less likely than others to believe that aliens exist. Or, if they think something is “out there,” they are less likely to think of extra terrestrials as E.T. as they are to think of them as demons trying to deceive us for one reason or another. On the other hand, those with a materialist outlook tend to see the world as just a “pale blue dot” in the heavens and humanity as nothing more than the consequence of chance and chaos. In fact, it's become almost an article of materialist faith that if we are here, someone else must be too.  All of which suggests that there's more to how we view these matters than what we have seen or not seen. For instance, despite being supposedly a planet-wide concern, nearly all UFOs sighted tend to show up in the English-speaking world. Or, as someone on Reddit noted, “they sure love the US.”    A similar phenomenon can be seen in the variations of “bigfoot” stories, depending on from what region they are. The stories out of the Pacific Northwest tend to resemble a Harry and the Hendersons vibe. Sure, the creature might seem a bit scary but, in the end, they are one with nature, like a kind of extra furry Bill Walton. The stories out of Texas are all about these super aggressive creatures that are ready to fight and kill and steal your children. Tennessee bigfoots, on the other hand, are just downright neighborly, knocking on doors to ask for some garlic. These together suggest it's clear that, even when it comes to urban legends and outer space, the stories we tell ourselves make a big difference in what we see in the world.  Anyone who has read C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy can tell you that the great apologist used his own imagination to tell wonderful stories where very plausible aliens lived and interacted with his human heroes. The inhabitants of Mars and Venus, or as Lewis named them, “Malacandra” and “Perelandra,” were fellow creatures born of the artistry and care of the same God we encounter in the Bible.  Yet, in one of his last books, he noted the subjective element in people's belief in the extraordinary. Right at the end of his study of the medieval worldview, he wrote:   "Fifty years ago, if you had asked an astronomer about “life on other worlds,” he was apt to be totally agnostic about it or even stress its improbability. We are now told that in so vast a universe stars that have planets and planets that have inhabitants must occur times without number. Yet no compulsive evidence is to hand. But is it irrelevant that in between the old opinion and the new we have had the vast proliferation of “science fiction” and the beginnings of space-travel in real life?"   What we believe about alien life and other mysteries says more about our beliefs, or what Charles Taylor called our “social imaginaries,” than it does about their existence. The culture around us affects our view of the world in profound ways. Our worldview is a pair of belief “glasses” that help us understand the nature of reality, but it can also be a kind of blinder, too.   This doesn't mean we are completely lost in the fog of our own precognitive assumptions, only that we should follow Francis Schaeffer's advice about checking our presuppositions “after a careful consideration of which worldview is true.”  This Breakpoint was co-authored by Dr. Timothy D. Padgett. For more resources to live like a Christian in this cultural moment, go to breakpoint.org.
