Jesus again tells two short parables with similar meaning. He compares God's reign to someone who searches to find something very valuable, and when he finds it, he sells everything to buy it. While Christians should value God's kingdom above all else, Jesus tells these two parables to teach us how He has in love given up all that is His to make us His own. Through two short parables that use the images of a mustard seed and leaven, Jesus makes a similar point. Both a mustard seed and leaven are small and seem insignificant, yet over time, both bring substantial growth. In a similar way, God's reign as King may seem insignificant right now in the ministry of Jesus, but the Lord promises that His reign will become a home for many people. Jesus tells the crowds another parable that uses the image of farming. A master sows good seed in his field, but an enemy sows weeds right on top of the good seed. When the servants ask about pulling the weeds, the master commands that both be left to grow until they are separated at the harvest. The disciples receive Jesus' explanation of this parable privately, and He focuses their attention on the harvest, that is, the end of the age. At that time, the angels will separate the unrighteous from the righteous. Until that time, the Church is called to patient endurance and trust in Christ, the King.  Rev. Although Jesus has just healed a demon-possessed man, some scribes and Pharisees ask Jesus for another sign. Jesus refuses to give any sign except the sign of Jonah— that is, Jesus' own death and resurrection. He warns His opponents of further rejection of His work. To do so is to invite further demonic oppression. When some of Jesus' family come looking for Him, He reminds those listening that His family is first and foremost defined by faith in Him.  Rev. Alan Philps tells of Nadia, a translator at the Metropol Hotel who became a "secret dissident" after losing faith in Stalinism during the purges. She trusted Australian journalist Godfrey Blunden, believing him to be more reliable than "snobbish" British or career-driven American reporters. She shared her true, dangerous views with him and even took him to visit private Soviet homes, which was strictly forbidden. However, Blunden betrayed her by publishing a novel that thinly disguised her identity and the locations she had shown him. This led to Nadia's arrest in 1948 and an eight-year sentence in the Gulag, where she faced starvation. Her husband and daughter were also broken by the system. Nadia eventually survived, moving to Israel in the 1970s. Philps notes that her grandson is now a professor in Jerusalem, offering a rare "happy ending" amidst the broader tragedy of Soviet brutality. (3)1906

Jesus withdraws from those who are ready to destroy Him because the hour of His death has not yet come. After He heals a demon-oppressed man, the Pharisees renew their claim that Jesus casts out demons by the prince of demons. Jesus points out the error of their logic and proclaims that He has come as the One who binds Satan and rescues people from the devil's deadly domain. Those who persistently reject this Gospel reject the Holy Spirit's work of salvation for them; their words are the fruit that give evidence of what is in their hearts.  Rev. The Pharisees question Jesus for allowing His disciples to pluck heads of grain on the Sabbath, accusing Him of allowing work on the day of rest. Jesus makes it plain from the Scriptures that He is the Lord of the Sabbath, and His disciples are keeping the commandment by being with Him. As Jesus enters a synagogue, His enemies challenge Him concerning healing on the Sabbath. Jesus does the proper work by restoring His creation from the effects of sin.  Rev. As Jesus is speaking about John, He begins to describe the generation that has heard them both preach. The unbelieving hearers were not satisfied, no matter what was preached, yet the truth of God's Word will be vindicated. Judgment, however, awaits those places that refused to believe Jesus' mighty words and works. The Father reveals Himself not to the wise and understanding, but to little children, that is, those who come to Jesus entirely dependent on Him. While Jesus' ministry of preaching and teaching in Israel continues, John remains in Herod's prison. From that cell, John sends two of His disciples to ask Jesus if He really is the Coming Christ. Jesus' response uses Old Testament promises to answer, “Yes! I am the Christ!” As John's disciples return to John with the answer, Jesus tells the crowds the importance of John's ministry. Jesus promises His disciples that as they confess Him before the world, He will confess them before His Father in heaven. The disciples must know that this will bring division even within their own families, and they must bear this division as carrying a cross while following Jesus. Back in Capernaum, some men bring to Jesus their paralytic friend on his bed. Jesus sees their faith and speaks comforting words of forgiveness to the man. When the scribes consider this blasphemy, Jesus sees their thoughts and corrects them. He uses His authoritative word to make the paralytic walk, and in so doing, He shows that His Word also has authority to forgive sins. Jesus has commanded that He will go to the other side of the sea, and so He falls asleep in the boat as the disciples take Him across. The great storm that arises causes the disciples to forget the Lord's promise, so they cry out to Him in fear. Jesus rebukes their fear before rebuking the winds and the sea. By this action, He clearly shows that He is God. On the other side of the sea, two demon-possessed men confront Jesus. Even though the enemy is powerful, the demons are no match for Jesus as He sends them into a herd of pigs that spells the demons' doom. When Jesus enters Peter's house in Capernaum, He heals Peter's mother-in-law, and she begins to serve Him. As Jesus continues His ministry of healing, He fulfills the promise of the Lord from Isaiah 53, bearing our sicknesses. When Jesus commands that He will be going to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, a scribe declares that he will follow Jesus wherever He goes. Having finished His teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus descends as crowds follow Him. A leper emerges and cries out for cleansing, which Jesus gives in His good will. In touching the leper, Jesus does not become unclean; instead, His cleansing flows to the leper. After Jesus enters Capernaum, a centurion approaches Jesus for healing for his servant. The centurion knows the authority of Jesus' Word and so does not even ask Jesus to enter his house. False teaching would lead people off the narrow path to life. That's why Jesus warns His disciples against the deception of false teachers. Although they may look good on the outside, their evil on the inside can be seen in the fruit of what they say. The Lord will not be fooled on the Last Day, however. Jesus reminds His disciples that they pray to their heavenly Father who is a generous Giver. They need not be afraid to ask, seek, or knock with confidence and persistence, because their heavenly Father knows even better than earthly fathers how to give good gifts. As God gives good gifts to His children, so Jesus' disciples show love to others as they desire to be loved themselves.
