Jesus concludes His discourse of parables by asking His disciples about their understanding. Their affirmative answer is true because they do believe in Jesus, even if their knowledge will still falter. Having been trained for the kingdom of heaven, Jesus makes His disciples true scribes who find the treasures of the Scriptures revealed in Him. Tragically, that does not take place when Jesus preaches in His hometown. The residents there falsely assume they know Jesus because they think they know His family. Because of this unbelief, Jesus does not do many mighty works there.  Rev. Mark Squire, pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, IA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Matthew 13:51-58.  To learn more about Immanuel Lutheran, visit immanuelsta.org. “The Reign of Heaven Stands Near” is a series on Sharper Iron that studies the Gospel according to St. Matthew. The first evangelist proclaims that God has fulfilled His Old Testament promises by sending Jesus to bring the reign of the heavens among us. As the Son of David, Jesus is the gracious King we need, and as the Son of Abraham, Jesus is the blessing to all the families of the earth.  Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Jesus again tells two short parables with similar meaning. He compares God's reign to someone who searches to find something very valuable, and when he finds it, he sells everything to buy it. While Christians should value God's kingdom above all else, Jesus tells these two parables to teach us how He has in love given up all that is His to make us His own. This comforts the disciples of Jesus as they live now waiting for the close of the age when believers will be separated from unbelievers and God's vindication of the righteous will be made manifest.  Rev. Jeff Hemmer, pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church in Fairview Heights, IL and Signal Hill Lutheran Church in Belleville, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Matthew 13:44-50.  To learn more about Bethany Lutheran, visit bethanylcms.org. “The Reign of Heaven Stands Near” is a series on Sharper Iron that studies the Gospel according to St. Matthew. Through two short parables that use the images of a mustard seed and leaven, Jesus makes a similar point. Both a mustard seed and leaven are small and seem insignificant, yet over time, both bring substantial growth. In a similar way, God's reign as King may seem insignificant right now in the ministry of Jesus, but the Lord promises that His reign will become a home for many people. Jesus' parables bring about a fulfillment of God's Word from Psalm 78.  Rev. Ned Moerbe, pastor at Memorial Lutheran Church and School in Houston, TX, joins host Rev. Jesus tells the crowds another parable that uses the image of farming. A master sows good seed in his field, but an enemy sows weeds right on top of the good seed. When the servants ask about pulling the weeds, the master commands that both be left to grow until they are separated at the harvest. The disciples receive Jesus' explanation of this parable privately, and He focuses their attention on the harvest, that is, the end of the age. At that time, the angels will separate the unrighteous from the righteous. Until that time, the Church is called to patient endurance and trust in Christ, the King.  Rev. Dr. Kevin Golden, Associate Professor of Exegetical Theology and Dean of Ministerial Formation at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO, joins host Rev. When Jesus' disciples ask Him why He is now speaking in the parables, Jesus explains that His parables both reveal and hide the truth. To the disciples, further revelation is given; to the crowds, the truth is given but remains hidden without faith. Alan Philps tells of Nadia, a translator at the Metropol Hotel who became a "secret dissident" after losing faith in Stalinism during the purges. She trusted Australian journalist Godfrey Blunden, believing him to be more reliable than "snobbish" British or career-driven American reporters. She shared her true, dangerous views with him and even took him to visit private Soviet homes, which was strictly forbidden. However, Blunden betrayed her by publishing a novel that thinly disguised her identity and the locations she had shown him. This led to Nadia's arrest in 1948 and an eight-year sentence in the Gulag, where she faced starvation. Her husband and daughter were also broken by the system. Nadia eventually survived, moving to Israel in the 1970s. Philps notes that her grandson is now a professor in Jerusalem, offering a rare "happy ending" amidst the broader tragedy of Soviet brutality. (3)1906

Those who believe the Word will receive peace from God, but those who do not believe are warned that the Day of Judgment is coming as it once came for notoriously wicked places.  Rev. Tim Sandeno, missionary church planter to Spangdahlem, Germany, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Matthew 10:5-15.  “The Reign of Heaven Stands Near” is a series on Sharper Iron that studies the Gospel according to St. Matthew. Jesus continues to bring God's kingdom by teaching, preaching, and healing. He does not see the crowds with anger, but with compassion, for He has come as the Good Shepherd for sinners. In this episode, Hilmarie sits down with Katie Godfrey to explore the realities of entrepreneurship, leadership, and what it truly takes to transition from being a skilled technician to a successful CEO. From opening her first salon at just 19 years old while carrying £50,000 of debt to building a seven-figure business empire, Katie shares the lessons that shaped her journey and transformed her approach to business.Katie challenges one of the most common beliefs in the beauty and service industries: that being fully booked automatically means success. She explains why busyness can often hide deeper business problems, including poor pricing, low profit margins, and a lack of strategic planning. The conversation highlights the importance of stepping away from daily operations, understanding business numbers, and building a company that supports the lifestyle and goals of its owner rather than trapping them inside it.The discussion also explores leadership, personal branding, team culture, and the power of making difficult decisions. Katie shares why entrepreneurs must learn to overcome comparison, imposter syndrome, and fear of success, while also embracing visibility in an increasingly AI-driven world. Her Green Pill wisdom centers on celebrating progress, recognizing achievements along the journey, and understanding that success is not just about reaching the next goal but appreciating how far you've already come.At its core, this episode is about building a business intentionally. Katie's story is a powerful reminder that true success comes from creating freedom, focusing on what matters most, and having the courage to evolve as both a leader and entrepreneur.About The GuestKatie Godfrey is an award-winning entrepreneur, business strategist, author, and mentor who has become one of the leading voices in the beauty and business coaching industries. Starting her entrepreneurial journey at the age of 19, she built a successful salon business from the ground up while overcoming significant financial challenges, eventually scaling her ventures into a multi-million-pound enterprise.Today, Katie is the founder of KG Business Mentor, where she helps salon owners, beauty professionals, and service-based entrepreneurs transition from working in their businesses to leading them strategically. Her mission is to empower business owners to step into their CEO role, build profitable companies, and create lives that align with their personal and professional ambitions.Quotes1:36 - Take a moment to pause and celebrate yourself at that moment. 5:58 - I think that beauty is so much more than just that treatment. Like, yes, that makes someone feel confident, that makes someone feel pretty, and all of those things, but it's so much more deeper than that. 9:13 - Just listening to the team, making sure that they feel cared for and looked after as well, because ultimately they're the ones that are running our business. 9:37 - When they see that the leader is nurturing, when they see the leader is caring, when they see the leader is putting their team's thoughts and feelings first and their clients, everyone else kind of wants to support that too.  13:33 - We know opening a business needs 100% of your time. So, you really just need to make sure that you're really being aware of each step that you take in business. 19:07 - You have to do what you want to do at the end of the day. And just because of closing something doesn't mean it's a failure. It just means that you're in your next level.20:06 Ending something doesn't mean it's a failure. A ruler comes to Jesus, asking Him to lay His hand on the ruler's dead daughter to give her life again. As Jesus goes, He gives cleansing life to another daughter whose issue of blood has made her unclean. As Jesus' touch brings life to this woman, so His touch brings life to the girl who has died. After leaving the house, two blind men cry out to Jesus for mercy. With faith in Jesus as the Son of David, they receive the gift of sight from the Lord. Soon, people bring a demon-oppressed man to Jesus, and He casts out the demon and makes the man speak once more. While this leads the crowds to astonishment, the Pharisees are convinced that Jesus is working in league with the devil.  Rev. Back in Capernaum, some men bring to Jesus their paralytic friend on his bed. Jesus sees their faith and speaks comforting words of forgiveness to the man. When the scribes consider this blasphemy, Jesus sees their thoughts and corrects them. He uses His authoritative word to make the paralytic walk, and in so doing, He shows that His Word also has authority to forgive sins. The crowds rightly glorify God for bringing this authority over sin among them.  Rev. Jesus has commanded that He will go to the other side of the sea, and so He falls asleep in the boat as the disciples take Him across. The great storm that arises causes the disciples to forget the Lord's promise, so they cry out to Him in fear. Jesus rebukes their fear before rebuking the winds and the sea. By this action, He clearly shows that He is God. On the other side of the sea, two demon-possessed men confront Jesus. Even though the enemy is powerful, the demons are no match for Jesus as He sends them into a herd of pigs that spells the demons' doom. Jesus reminds His disciples that they pray to their heavenly Father who is a generous Giver. They need not be afraid to ask, seek, or knock with confidence and persistence, because their heavenly Father knows even better than earthly fathers how to give good gifts. As God gives good gifts to His children, so Jesus' disciples show love to others as they desire to be loved themselves. Though this way is narrow and difficult from suffering, it is the way by which Jesus leads to life.  Rev. Chris Hull, pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church and Student Center in Macomb, IL, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Matthew 7:7-14.  To learn more about Immanuel Lutheran, visit immanuelmacomb.com. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Pastor Appel serves at Faith Lutheran Church in Godfrey, IL. Although Jesus does authorize His disciples to discern what is good from what is evil, Jesus does not authorize His disciples to bring the judgment of condemnation. That authority belongs to Him alone. Rather, with their eyes made healthy by the judgment of sin in Jesus' cross, the disciples of Jesus can see clearly to help others see the forgiveness of sins found in Christ alone.  Rev. Harrison Goodman, Executive Director of Mission and Theology for Higher Things, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Matthew 7:1-6.  To learn more about Higher Things, visit higherthings.org. “The Reign of Heaven Stands Near” is a series on Sharper Iron that studies the Gospel according to St. Matthew. Jesus teaches His disciples that trust in the true God instead of any idol brings freedom from worry. He invites His disciples to consider the simple examples of the way God cares for birds and flowers. If God loves such trivial things, He will surely love His dear children. Thus, the disciples are free to seek God's kingdom and righteousness first, confident that God will give them all things needed.  Rev. Jeremiah Johnson, pastor at Glory of Christ Lutheran Church in Plymouth, MN, joins host Rev.
