A throwback to the old Comedy Film Nerds days, as Graham Elwood and Chris Mancini do a full spoiler ep on The Batman on Graham's feed. Everything from the story to the ending is discussed. See the movie, then listen!
Hello, kind listener. This IS your every-other-weekly host Marc Hershon here, guiding you through Episode 272 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Before I tell you the treat I have in store for you today, if you missed last week's Epi271, entitled “Birth, Life, and Death”, with my erstwhile co-host Tyson Saner, it's not too late to catch it! He featured clips from Dad Pants, Shenk and The Endless Honeymoon Podcast. And it's available from Apple and Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, YouTube, Audible.com, PodCay, iHeart Radio and, of course, you can find it and every epiode of this unstoppable machine up at our website, http://SuccotashShow.com! Instead of clips for you this week, I sat down on one side of a lively Zoom chat with John Ross Bowie, host of the Household Faces soundcast that I can't seem to get enough of, where he interviews super-familiar journeyman actors who you definitely recognize from their faces in films and TV, if not their names. John is one of those faces himself whom you'd likely know from The Big Bang Theory, Speechless, and literally dozens and dozens of other things. We'll get into his credits, his soundcast, his origin story and a whole lot more coming up in our convo. I recently had another chat but as the guest this time on an upcoming episode of What Are You Watching? with Chris Mancini, best known, perhaps, as the co-host of the Comedy Film Nerds soundcast but who know also hosts The Quiet Journeys of Professor Atwood and Conversations from the Abyss. We talked about various TV shows and movies we've been catching up on, and that episode will be dropping soon – I'll be sure to mention it in our socials so do follow us @SuccotashShow on both Instagram and Twitter. This installment of Succotash is brought to you by Henderson's Pants new HalloPants, just in time for Halloween at the end of next month! Thanks to John for spending some time with me. He tells you where you can find his Household Faces soundcast and his Instagram in there, but feel free to use the handy links I'm sprinkling around in this paragraph you're reading now. If you want in on the blurb-a-thon that is our Tweetsack, where we mention the folks who have mentioned US in their socials, just drop @SuccotashShow into YOUR social media streams at some point in the next couple of weeks and we'll probably find you. That's pretty much what there is for Epi272. If you want ever want to talk about YOUR soundcast, pick up the phone and call the Succotash and Runaway Truck Ramp Status Hotline at 1 (818) 921-7212. And coming up next week in this very same feed is Tyson and Epi273 with a paslle of comedy soundcast clips just for your ears. Until you hear me in a couple of weeks for Episode 274, please treat each other like decent human beings, wash your hands, mask up, vax up, and if anyone asks you if you have been listening to any good soundcasts lately, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon
Original Date: December 20, 2010Chris Mancini is a stand-up comic, filmmaker and author, who was the guest on Chillpak Hollywood Hour #103 when he discussed his just-published book Pacify Me: A Handbook for the Freaked-Out New Dad with Dean Haglund. Now, he's back to discuss how the book was received (both commercially and critically), the state of (and future of) publishing, as well as of stand-up comedy, short filmmaking, and CHH “sister” podcast “Comedy Film Nerds”. This week's installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour will definitely put the “happy” in Happy Holidays!
Hello, chumley (I’m talking to you, dear reader), and I am glad that things here in the good ol' US of A seem to be sort of simmering down. Maybe. Kinda? It, at least, FEELS like it’s getting betterer. Marc Hershon here to usher you through Epi237 of Succotash Shut-In: The Soundcast Stimulus Package. The California shelter in place order just got lifted yesterday for now and, who knows, by the time our office 10th anniversary rolls around this April, we may be able to go back to being just plain ol’ Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast again. We’ve got a special guest sharing the SuccoZoom Studio with me today but before we get to him I wanted to ask if you caught our most recent Episode 236 with our alternating host Tyson Saner. He featured a few marvelous clips last week from the soundcasts Love, Alexi, Strange Times, and In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast. Go scoop up a big earful of soundcast goodness at Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, YouTube, the Laughable app, or from our own homesite, SuccotashShow.com. My guest today is the amazingly hard-working and detail-oriented Chris Mancini! You probably know Chris from his ten-year tenure aboard the Comedy Film Nerds soundcast that he co-hosted with Graham Elwood. We’ve chatted with him a number of times in the past on this show, usually when I was down at the Los Angeles Podcast Festival, which he, Graham, Dave Anthony, and Andy Wood spearheaded for five years. We talk about why that endeavor came to a halt but it sure was fun to be a part of that every year. Chris has a lot going on, from graphic novels and not one, two, but three soundcasts running concurrently. We talk about it all and dig a little bit deeper into the history and the mystery that is Chris Mancini… You can link up to everything Chris has going on at whitecatentertainment.com, including his three soundcasts: What Are You Watching?, The Quiet Journeys of Professor Atwood, and Conversations from the Abyss. You can also follow him on Twitter @ChrisJMancini. I’ll just say thanks for dropping by, please remember to rate and review us where they let you get away with that stuff – it costs nothing for you to do it and it means the world to us. And remember that Tyson will be here before you know it with a lovely packet of soundcast clips just for you. Until we meet again, be good to each other, wear a damn mask, and if anyone asks if you’ve heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

MONSTER PARTY RETURNS TO AN INCREDIBLY FUN TOPIC! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, wipe the dust from an old topic they first tackled during the early days of MONSTER PARTY! Prepare your panicked pulse for... INCREDIBLY STRANGE TITLES VOL. 2!!! We certainly don't want to give anything away in this episode summary, but what we can say is that this current batch of incredibly strange movie titles is even better than the last one! Whether it's a title consisting of a single word, or one that runs the risk of turning into a novella, we've got something strange for every taste. As long as your taste is as strange as ours. Joining us for this macabre multitude of monstrous monikers, is a comedian, a writer, a friend of the show, and a podcast trailblazer! MONSTER PARTY is deliriously proud to welcome back... CHRIS MANCINI! (EAR BUDS:THE PODCASTING DOCUMENTARY, COMEDY FILM NERDS, THE COMEDY FILM NERDS GUIDE TO MOVIES, ASYLUM, LONG AGO & FAR AWAY) Now if you'll excuse us, we need to start compiling the list for INCREDIBLY STRANGE TITLES VOL. 3!
When a filmmaker enjoys a certain amount of success, it most likely means they have some fans that have rallied around their work. In this new age of branding, however, a true fan has become a much bigger part of the filmmaking process. Filmmakers CHRIS MANCINI and GARY DEOCAMPO join us in a discussion about the role of fans in our lives and work. Fans are more than just our audience. They can also finance a project via crowdfunding or promote a movie thanks to word of mouth on social networks. The dark side of fandom is that those same supporters can also be a destructive force. Listen to some of our experiences with fans and ways to build a beautiful friendship. Hey babes! We are back this week with special guest, podcaster, and foreclosure survivor, Graham Elwood. We discuss what it takes to work "clean" as a comedian, being over frivolous entertainment, how he had the "American Dream" and then lost it, and we also discuss our current political climate and if Trump is our rock bottom. Yes, believe it or now, and for the last time – really, this time, it’s me. Marc Hershon. Departing host but still remaining executive producer of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. First of all, I lied to you last episode when I said THAT was the final episode. Because after I dropped that installment I heard from a number of our friends-of-the-show, mainly soundcasters who have been so supportive and helpful over the seven years that the show has been on that I felt I truly hadn’t thanked enough people when last I signed off. Also, between Epi162 and now, we’ve found a way to keep Succotash going! In classic show business fashion, I’m just going to tease you with that for now and it will NOT be revealed in this blog post! You'll just have to listen to the episode to find out, as I do have a lengthy chat with my replacement toward the very end of the episode. The initial impetus to do an UNFINAL episode was that our resident political comedian and social commentator Will Durst had sent me a last Burst O’ Durst installment which arrived after we’d dropped Epi162. And then I discovered we also had a last Boozin’ with Bill segment with our announcer Bill Heywatt that had somehow slipped through the cracks. Based on those things, I figured I would do one last round of soundcast clips just featuring shows from some of our most vocal supporters on social media. Which gives us quite a lineup! Big giant thanks, by the way, to our Associate Producer, Tyson Saner, for helping me to harvest the absolute bumper crop of clips we’re featuring this show. You’re going to hear from The Anti Social Show, Casa Mirth, the Chillpak Hollywood Hour, Comedy Film Nerds, Ear Goggles, Film Threat, Illusionoid, Quick Question, Story Worthy, and Strange Times. And this Unfinal episode is sponsored by our friends at Henderson’s Pants and teir spanking new Down UnderPants. (Including an endorsement from Jason "Jabs" McNamara, all the way from Canberra, Australia.) THE CLIPS Chillpak Hollywood HourFirst out of the barrel are a couple of gents I have referred to often as being members of “podcast royalty” and that is Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness of the Chillpak Hollywood Hour. Early on these guys were very supportive of the show and generous with their time and, over the years, we’ve become good friends. Their show is now in it’s 11th year and these guys not only have careers on their own from each other but they’ve made movies together as well, including a great dark comedy thriller called The Lady Killers. It will be screening in about a week in San Jose, California. One night only, on February 21st, at Club 3B. Strange TimesSuccotash has, on occasion, been a kind of conduit thorugh which people from one show have found out about and, eventually, connected with other shows. A case in point was Jabs, heard this show, making contact with Davian Dent in England who, at the time, had a very unique show called The Bitter Sound. Davian and Jabs put their heads together – a half a world apart from each other, mind you, and created a soundcast mini-series call The Kundalini Files, a kind of detective spoof. They also pulled in some other soundcasters on that one – other fine folks we have featured over the years here on the show. Here's a snippet from a recent episode of Davian’s other long-running show, Strange Times, featuring Davian, Samantha Pett and Kat Sorens. All three have been very friendly to our show and one of these days I’ve got to somehow meet these people and down some brews with them until we all pass out. Story WorthyAnother ardent supporter of this show has been a woman with a terrific show of her own, and that’s Christine Blackburn, co-host of the Story Worthy Podcast, along with Hannis Phinney. I’ve run into her almost every year at the Los Angeles Podcast Festival and she’s always been a great promoter and cheerleader. Some years she’s even dragged various comedians and soundcasters into the Podfest’s Podcast Lab and insisted that they sit down and do an interview with me. Story Worthy is a great storytelling show, with some great guests, and recently they had on comedian Johnno Wilson, who related a harrowing tale. Film ThreatAnother good friend to this show and who I have ended up hanging out with whenever I run into him out in the world is Chris Gore. When Succotash first started he was running PodCRASH, where his gimmick was to appear on other soundcasters shows, then play THOSE episodes as his own. In a way it was the ultimate cross-promotion. Once upon a time he had been the editor and publisher of Film Threat magazine, a great “alt” movie magazine and Chris has returned to that property, only now in website and soundcast form. Here’s a clip from his recent “Time’s Up At Sundance” epi from January with guests Natalia Winkleman and Jon Bernstein… Casa MirthThe Casa Mirth soundcast features the team-up of Dr. Norman Trousers and River Gambezi. Norman’s been a presence around here pretty much since we began Succotash and he’s part of the infamous Podcast Mafia that got started years ago with myself somehow ending up as the titular Podfather. (Although I believe that moniker was started by Eric Furniss of The FOONcast.) Trousers and Gambezi run a very sporadically-appearing show and, for the past four holiday seasons, they have produced these wild mashup Christmas productions. They’re scripted and then the boys draft fellow soundcasters from all over the world to voice the parts. I’m honored to have been included in these crazy shows and this past December Casa Mirth featured their own take on It’s A Wonderful Life, the Jimmy Stewart classic. I was asked to be the Narrator, which I pulled off rather nicely, I think. Illusionoid We head up to Toronto to hear from the cast of Illusionoid. Love these guys, who I got to interview fairly early into when we started. Paul Bates, Lee Smart, and Nug Nahrgang – the best name in soundcasting – were in San Francisco for the annual Improv Festival here and we got a chance to hang out. And being a longtime improvisor, I really took to their style of an improvised sci-fi anthonolgy series, based around the gimmick of mankind’s creation bent on the destruction of humans. We feature a glimpse at a transmission from the last episode of their 9th season last November. Ear GogglesJeremy, Aaron, and Stacy don’t soundcast all that often but they still drop an episode every now and then. I used to run into Jeremy and Stacy at the LA Podfest for the first few years but they stopped coming down from Seattle. We're featuring a ready-made clip I found on their homesite – one of their “bonus clips” from a show last year where Stacy plays with some toys, as she puts it. (If you go to their site, you can browse through their archives all the way back to 2005, which is when they started out as The Sibling Rivalry podcast.) Comedy Film NerdsA couple of other longtime soundcasters who have been very nice to me are Chris Mancini and Graham Elwood, the hosts of the Comedy Film Nerds soundcast. They are also two of the organizers of the Los Angeles Podcast Festival and have never been anything but welcoming, accommodating, and kind to me. It probably helped that I contributed to the Kickstarter campaign that paid for the first LA Podfest but, since then, they have invited me to moderate panels and be a guest on other panels. Here’s a clip from their episode 403 from last month, with guest Jon Reep. Quick QuestionI wanted to be sure to toss in a soundcast farewell to Travis Clark and Jonathan Sadowski, hosts of the Quick Question soundcast. When I first mentioned I was going to step away from Succotash, Travis messaged me to ask if it was his turn to “talk me off the ledge”, as he put it. That’s because a few years ago, he and his wife Brandi were considering hanging up Tiny Odd Conversations, the show they did together and I convinced them to hang in there as they had only hit their Epi50. And they did, for quite awhile. Eventually, Brandi got herself a new job that kept her crazy-busy and TOCpod eventually drained away. But then the Clarks got a new neighbor, Jonathan, and Travis discovered they had a lot in common. Mostly talking, judging from the amount of palavering that goes on during episodes of Quick Question. I had them on a few months ago from a chat we had at the LA Podfest. The Anti Social ShowFor our last clip of this Unfinal Succotash episode, we turn to a couple of the most ardent supporters of the show who started their own soundcast last year. Our very own Tyson Saner teamed up with one of our most supportive listeners, Hunter Block, and created The Anti Social Show. For the first 10 episodes, they were only on SoundCloud but now they’re on iTunes and other fine distribution points around the interwebs. This clip, harvested by Tyson himself, is from their Epi41, one of the first installments of 2018, entitled “Obscured By Sound”. And that is going to do it for Succotash under my command. We’ll be announcing when the first new episode of of the show is dropping, as soon as we figure out what we need to do to put all of the controls into the new host's hands. I will likely drop in from time to time, and I’m in the process of putting a whole new soundcast into production. I want to thank you for listening to this Unfinal episode of the show. For those of you who have been listening for a while, I can’t thank you enough for your support. And whether that describes you or you’re relatively new to the show, please subscribe and keep listening as show continues. I’m excited to see where our new host takes the show. Now, for the last time as your host, it’s my pleasure to ask you to please pass the Succotash. Goodbye. — Marc Hershon
Comedian & Filmmaker Graham Elwood (First Nations Comedy Experience, Comedy Film Nerds, Earbuds, Laffghanistan) talks about his blended life experience as comic and filmmaker, political vigilante and podcaster, revealing levels to an already mulit-layered persona that I did not expect. Between laughs, we engage in a charged discussion of corporate profit motives vs. identity politics, the intentional media distraction, and regular injustices we've grown blind to. But we also talk about 70s cinema, the rigors of making a documentary, his amazing doc Earbuds, the LA Podcast Festival, and infusing creative work with meaning.

Stand up comedian/podcaster/documentarian Graham Elwood joins me for an excellent MBSing exploring one of his favorite film genres, crime and mob movies. Upon moving from Madison, Wisconsin, to Evanston, Illinois when he was 11, Graham garnered a unique perspective on the films as he watched mobsters and crooked cops rule the streets both on his family's newly-acquired color TV and in his new hometown of Chicago. Graham is not just a film enthusiast, he cohosts the Comedy Film Nerds podcast, cowrote The Comedy Film Nerds Guide to Movies, and has directed two documentary films, Laffghanistan about his multiple stand up tours for US troops in the Middle East and Ear Buds: The Podcasting Documentary set to be released in Spring of 2015. He was a total joy to talk films, Chicago, and life with, and he had some wonderful insights on how his life as a kid bouncing between privileged suburban kids and hard knock ruffians isn't all that different from his life as a touring stand up comic who also enjoys surfing and health food. Enjoy, nerds! Notes: LA Podfest Live Streams! [promo code nerd] Vulture article on the effect Thief had on modern crime films
Hi Internet! This is Genevieve, this is the AP Collection, this is a chat with another local blogger and podcaster, Ben Ostroff! He is the Ben part of BenReallyRickWhat, a movie podcast that discusses film pairings. Ben is a cool dude and a real film nerd. We will learning this review that the two of us have opposite opinions but love talking about it! There is a little Oscar talk a (this is being released the Thursday prior to the big award show) I also wanted to watch a movie and talk with Ben about it just for the hell of it which is exactly what we did. I almost never go to the movies and he has practically seen everything so I decided to peruse Netflix for something and we settled on “End of Watch” which I had heard mixed things about. Figuring this would provoke discussion, we dove in! I stand by my statement of not really understanding the timeline of that movie really at all. Otherwise I dig a good action movie and it delivered while brining you face to face with a small part of Los Angeles that I am completely unfamiliar with. Anyway, enjoy! FYI! This is filled with spoilers Ben Ostroff BenReallyRickWhat Podcast website @bensucks on Twitter @Ben_sucks on Instagram Photo credit for all pictures on this page: Jerome Charles

Kira sits down with actor, comedian, and dad, Dave Anthony. Anthony is the creator, producer and editor of Walking the Room, a podcast that he co-hosts with comedian Greg Behrendt. The two became friends over two decades ago during the early days of Anthony's stand-up career. They hosted a show together on the Comedy World Radio Network in 2001 and collaborated again on The Greg Behrendt Show in 2006–2007. Anthony has had numerous roles in television, films and commercials, and has been a guest on various late night shows and podcasts. He was a contributing writer for the SuicideGirls and Comedy Film Nerds websites, and had a blog called Stop All Monsters. He has done stand-up all over the world and frequently performs around Southern California. He is also currently a writer, most recently on AMC's Talking Dead, and now on IFC's Maron (where he also gives the show's star, Marc Maron, rides to work). Be sure to rate and comment on iTunes.
