Happy Wednesday Beer Friends! Full disclosure- last Thursday was ROUGH - and Jessie goes a little hard on the 4 letter swear words. If anything, she's proud of that sailor mouth she adopted from her NAVY sister. Patrick patiently sits through the exasperation as we unwind by drinking a tried and true classic in the New Orleans area- the NOLA Brewery IPA Hoptitoulas. We are going out of Jessie's comfort zone on this one since West Coast Style IPAs are not her jam, but Patrick's explanation of style and development provides excellent backstory to this classic style that people either love or hate. At the end of the day, NOLA Brewing Company is one of the OGs for Louisiana and really does handle up on their classic styles- always worth a revisit!
If I told you that on this edition of Out to Lunch we're talking about two types of alcohol – one that you can make at home, and one that's made by professionals, and that one of them is wine and the other is beer - you'd naturally assume we're talking about a winery on the one hand, and home-brew beer on the other. Well, you're 180 degrees off. We're talking about New Orleans first craft beer brewery. And home-made wine. Yes, home-made wine. Wine, Cider If you didn't know there was such a thing as home-made wine, well, apparently there is, and -here's a shocker - most of it reportedly tastes pretty bad. That's why Liam Meier and Neal Shulman spent a good deal of 2020 – which you might recall was the year bars were closed – holed up at home perfecting their DIY wine product, Brewsy. Brewsy is a wine and cider-making kit that the company says, “takes 15 minutes to start and 5 days to finish.” A single Brewsy kit will run you $45. You choose which juice to add. And you make 12-18 bottles of wine. That comes to about $2.12 a bottle. If you're thinking this is a crazy idea that's never going to take off, Brewsy already has 5 full time employees - and they've sold over 20,000 kits. Beer, Pizza This episode of Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at NOLA Pizza. It's the pizza restaurant in the taproom at New Orleans longest running craft brewery, NOLA Brewing. Given our long history and love of alcohol in this city, you might expect that NOLA Brewing was founded in 1808. Actually, it was founded in 2008. Although in the past, New Orleans has been home to breweries like Jax, Falstaff, Regal and Dixie, by the time Hurricane Katrina blew through here in 2005, there was no beer at all being brewed in New Orleans. Then, in 2008, a retired US Navy Surface Warfare Officer by the name of Kirk Coco built and opened NOLA Brewing. In the beginning, Kirk Coco's landlord was Doug Walner. Doug was also an investor in NOLA Brewing. Ten years later, in 2018, Kirk moved on to other interests. Doug Walner became the major shareholder in NOLA Brewing, and built a pizzeria, NOLA Pizza, into the business. Today NOLA Brewing produces around 10,000 barrels of beer a year, which puts it in the top 20% of breweries nationwide. And NOLA Pizza is winning food critic awards for best tasting pizza in the city. You can see photos from this show by Jill Lafleur at our website. And go back to 2015 with this very candid conversation with NOLA Brewing founder Kirk Coco. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this week's show, Louisiana Eats looks at the place where the law intersects with food and drink. The topic's not as dry as you might expect—especially when it comes to liquor and law! We begin with attorney Philip Greene. By day, he serves as Trademark and Internet Counsel for the U.S. Marine Corps, based in the Pentagon. Philip's probably better known, however, as a cocktail enthusiast and historian. He’s a founding member of the Museum of the American Cocktail and has written several books on the the high-proof drink. We discuss intellectual property with Philip, and the different forms that businesses have used to protect their brands. Dylan Lintern, President and COO of NOLA Brewing, joins us next. He tells us a harrowing tale of legal troubles so big that Godzilla himself played a major role. The litigious experience was the inspiration behind the name of the brewery's award-winning Hoppyright Infringement IIPA. Then, we hear from our resident food lawyer, founder of the Southern Food and Beverage Museum, Liz Williams. Liz demystifies just what life as a food lawyer might entail and discusses her personal experience with this growing legal specialty. Finally, we speak with environmental chemist turned absinthe distiller from New Orleans, Ted Breaux, who explains his pivotal role in the legalization of absinthe in the United States by challenging misconceptions with scientific evidence and a dogged perseverance. Another Carnival season is behind us, and for many, it's a time for fasting and abstinence. In 2016, registered dietitian Molly Kimball wrote an article challenging New Orleanians to give up all alcohol from Ash Wednesday until Easter as a way to reboot and learn how alcohol affects our bodies. In the years since, the #AlcoholFreeFor40 Challenge has grown, with Ochsner Eat Fit programs across the state hosting this community initiative. Molly visits our studio to talk about how the challenge has evolved and the impact it has had on the lives of some participants. Then, we speak with Dylan Lintern, President of NOLA Brewing Company. On Ash Wednesday, NOLA Brewing released their first canned non-alcoholic beverage, Hop’d Tea. Poppy and Dylan sample both sparkling tea flavors—Oolong and Rose-Hip Hibiscus—healthy alternatives for fans of the company's brews. Finally, how can you have a cocktail lounge when there's not a drop of alcohol involved? To answer that question, we meet Lorelei Bandrovschi, founder and owner of Listen Bar in New York City. Listen Bar is one of a growing number of a booze-free bars popping up across the country that's mixing up the way people are thinking about drinking. 94: Kirk Coco is a native of New Orleans, who spent 11 years in the United States Navy serving as a Surface Warfare Officer. During his commission he served as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer of the USS CHOSIN, Chief Engineer of the USS PELICAN, Operations Officer of the USS CAMDEN and served onboard the USS RONALD REAGAN as Tactical Action Officer/Readiness Officer for Destroyer Squadron Seven. Kirk chose to leave the Navy in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to return to New Orleans and help in the rebuilding and renewal of the city. After a short career with Capital One Bank, Kirk began his initial dream of bringing production and manufacturing back to New Orleans, founding NOLA Brewing Company in 2008. Since Dixie's departure from the city in 2005, NOLA Brewing is the only operating production brewery in Orleans Parish. In May 2015 Kirk began work on NOLA Distilling Company, a craft distillery located just 8 blocks from NOLA Brewery which will produce Vodka, Gin and Whiskeys for the New Orleans cocktail scene. Kirk is a founding member of the Louisiana Beer Board, a group whose mission is to bring the best craft brewed beers into Louisiana and increase the knowledge and availability of craft brewed beers to New Orleans, as well as the State of Louisiana. He is also a founding member of the LA Brewer’s Guild, organizing brewers in the state for the first time, and ensuring a strong commitment from government for the burgeoning craft beer movement. Trust your crazy ideas and don't quit until it is absolutely over!

Kirk Coco s inspiration for opening NOLA Brewing is inextricably entwined with the US Navy, Hurricane Katrina, Dixie Beer, and the clap. In a city of colorful characters, Kirk Coco is a colorful character. A wonderful combination of impetuousness, frank honesty, and business acumen, Kirk s venture into brewing is from his telling something akin to a blind man wandering drunk along the edge of a cliff. But in this case the blind man s sense of direction is impeccable. What could a guy who was a lawyer, a US Naval officer, and now a successful entrepreneur, regret How about being 8 years old and not making out with Maria Bertucci
