The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
Greg interviews Clif from BangkokBeerGuide.com about the ever evolving craft beer scene in Thailand. Cliff begins with the basic premise for the website and related social media: to act as a guide for locals and visitors to all the beer drinking opportunities in Bangkok, especially craft beers made by locals. The guys then review the famously restrictive Thai laws governing beer and alcohol in general, such as the prohibition on purchasing alcohol from 2 pm to 5 pm in the afternoon, and high minimum requirement for brewing beer that effectively shuts out all but the largest companies. Clif then digs deep to explain his love of beer as an act of creativity of the brewmaster but at the same time a “common man's” drink. Hence, Cliff's desire to promote local craft beer as a way to connect with small-scale Thai brewers. Unfortunately, Thai laws, supported by powerful forces best not discussed, make it harder for Thai ‘little guys' to get into the business of making beer. Greg and Cliff express hope that beer champion Taophipop wins his epic battle to reform Thai beer laws. The guys continue discussing various venues about town, how the scene has changed over time, and Cliff's philosophy for the website. Listen in for a great overview of the Thai craft beer scene circa 2024. Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. What we thought would be a short hang-out, ended up forming a new friendship solidified by our mutual love of beer that lasted late into the night. Today we taste through some sours we've had laying around and complain about how expensive the craft scene seems to be, especially when it comes to sour ales. But we still had a good time.

Sever your ties in South Dakota, just don't sever them from South Dakota. With 44 craft breweries and counting, and several of them located in the southeast corner of the state, the Sioux Falls craft beer scene may just need to be your next craft beer destination. So, sever your ties with the idea that South Dakota isn't about the beer. With Severance Beer Company on the scene, it's most definitely about the beer. And the people, too.The Sioux Falls craft beer scene changed because of a Xmas gift. When your given a home-brew gift for a Christmas gift, do you take that as a hint to create something bigger, or do you just brew a batch of beer and move on with your life? Scott Heckel, owner and brewer at Severance Brewing Co, took his Christmas gift to heart.Meet Scott and Melissa of Severance Brewing Co.Scott and Melissa Heckel may have never thought they were going to own a brewery, but all it took was a job that had Scott dreading Monday mornings and a Christmas gift of a homebrew kit. When the stars didn't align as originally planned, the brewery idea was put off for the foreseeable future. But Scott was able to see the silver lining and used this time as a chance to build his own severance package. And when the time finally came for him to quit his corporate job, he literally severed his ties, both with his previous career and with scissors to cut his ties. Changing from a suit into shorts and a t-shirt, on April 1, 2019, Scott walked out of his office and went directly into his brewery. And with Melissa on board as his partner and marketing team, the two may be working more now than they ever have - being parents, too - they're working for themselves. And so far, neither of them are dreading Monday mornings.Join us as we chat beer, severing ties, and not waiting for someday. We also talk about sustainability practices in the brewing process, a bit about music, and the South Dakota craft beer scene. Because after everything that these two have going on, Scott is also the current President of the South Dakota State Brewers Guild. When you think of Baja, you probably conjure up images of the mighty Pacific or the serene waters of the Sea of Cortez. Palm trees are abundant. Beach combing and whale watching, Corona in hand, are the only things are on your must-do list. Keep all that, but ditch the Corona. There's a damn good craft beer scene in Baja, and we're here to start you out on your journey to Baja beer with the Ensenada craft beer scene.Ensenada, Baja CaliforniaEnsenada is about a two hour drive South of the San Ysidro Border Crossing in Tijuana and San Diego, along Mexico Highway 1. With around 400,000 people, the location and the size make it the perfect stop for all the necessities before heading further south along the Baja California peninsula. So stock up. Fill the tank, buy the groceries, exchange the money. And don't forget the beer.Ensenada Craft BeerEnsenada has a blossoming craft beer scene, and in truth, they've had a pretty good one for the past few years. Even if you are only planning on heading across the border for a short jaunt into Tijuana, take a bit longer, head a couple more hours south. Ensenada is worth the time. Being a popular cruise ship stop, it has plenty of shopping, restaurants, bars, and nightlife to keep you entertained for days. But you all know our entertainment...breweries. And Ensenada does not disappoint. With brewpubs, beer bars, and craft breweries all over the city, you'll find yourself staying here longer than you thought. There are more to explore, but we've got a few breweries, an Anthony Bourdain recommended eatery, and a book to keep you company along the way to get you started.Agua Mala Cerveza ArtesanalCanneria CervezaCerveceria Transpeninsular Cerveceria WendlandtCerveceria Doble CLucky Irish Pub 4 (beer bar)La Guerrerense (food cart)How to Brew book by John PalmerAnd we talk about all of this, along with conversations with Nathaniel from Agua Mala Cerveza Artesanal and Paco from Canneria Cerveza. Meet Nathanial from Agua MalaLocated just north of Ensenada, both unique in its shipping container home and in its creative brews, will not disappoint. With a name translating to bad water or jellyfish in English, and a marine biologist turned brewery owner, Nathanial will revel you with his tales of stingray stings, baby vomit, his passion for the craft, and love of Ensenada and nature. Meet Paco from Canneria CervezaFrom dreams of wanting to be the King of Mexico when he was little to owning a brewery when he was older, Paco from Canneria Cerveza has created a brewery full of art, community, inspiration, and good beer, one piece of equipment and humor at a time. Catalonia may be known for its cava but it's actually home to over 100 craft beer breweries making over 1000 different craft beers. Guifré Jordan and Cillian Shields join Lorcan Doherty to take a look at the industry, which is going from strength to strength while still keeping its sense of close-knit community. We take a tour of the Cervesa del Montseny brewery – one of Catalonia's leading producers of artisanal beer – and sample the atmosphere at Barcelona Beer Festival, back for the first time since before the pandemic. Instead of a Catalan phrase, we've got a set of words to help you order just the right amount of your favorite craft beer – quinto, canya, canyeta, mitjana and gerra.
Siren Craft Brew was founded by Darren Anley in 2013, and has quickly grown to one of the best craft breweries in the UK and known worldwide for its collaborations. Located just outside of Reading, near in fact to where Adam used to live, Siren is known widely for its innovative and daring beers, and has been recognized as one of the best breweries in the world by Ratebeer.Throughout this conversation we circle around the similarities between our breweries, the stories of how we were founded, and both of our interest in pushing the breadth of our beer lineups. But we also explore the unique role that UK craft beer culture and regulations play in to the beers that Siren brews.

It's NOW's annual beer issue, so staff writer Kelsey Adams assembles Cole Firth of Blood Brothers, Jeff Manol of Muddy York and Jeff Wilson of Wellington for a craft beer panel discussing the merits of experimental versus traditional craft beers. David, Marie and Troy are still at our sponsor, Home Brew Mart. Rumor has it David brought a cot and this is where he lives now. Understandable. The Linda Vista store is where the city's first bootstrap scientists got all the ingredients, materials, recipes, rumors, and know-how to start the craft beer revolution in San Diego. It's also home to Ballast Point—makers of one Sculpin IPA, one of the most famous craft beers in existence—who's celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Colby Chandler—the second-longest serving employee who helped create Sculpin way back when—will share a few pints and some stories of craft beer's days in the manger. This week we talk to the creators and host of a new documentary film, Beer City: San Diego. Host Aubree Miller (who's also the creative director of Amplified Ale Works) and producer Dave Wadsworth spent three years documenting San Diego's craft beer world, talking to the brewers, owners, and personalities who helped build the culture. The film also features and serves as tribute to longtime craft beer supporter and eminently great human being, Nate Soroko, who passed away recently. Some of the proceeds of the film's premiere party (Aug. 5 at The Casbah) will go to Nate's family. In Hot Plates, we cover Pop Pie Co. and Stella Jean's Ice Cream, which is opening a new spot in one of San Diego's original neighborhoods. We discuss the boom of the Mexican stew, birria, now that everyone's going nuts for Mike's Red Tacos, a new birria food truck in Morena. Plus, one San Diego bar made it into Esquire's annual “Best Bars in America.” For Two People, $50, Troy is still knee-deep in donuts and shares his story about sitting down with the owner of the iconic VG Donut (get the apple fritter) in Cardiff. David suggests hitting up Garibaldi, the speakeasy-ish spot inside the InterContinental Hotel downtown. Aubree reluctantly points people to her favorite natural wine bar in South Park, The Rose. Donncha has crammed a wealth of experiences, both good and bad, into his past decade, in and around the Craft Beer Scene. As he moved from Head Brewer roles at Dig Brew, at the ill-fated Evolution Beer Co, and most recently at Tap It, Donncha has built himself a reputation as one of the most talented Craft Brewers in the UK. This has culminated in the launch of his own commercial brewing project Crop Beer in June 2021. At Crop Beer Donnach doesn't plan to brew by the rules, but rather bend them to the limit and make new ones that suit him. https://tapitbrew.co.uk/ https://www.cropbeer.co.uk/ Donncha wholeheartedly recommends the following fine establishments: https://www.facebook.com/TheGateCraftBar/ https://www.fouraletaproom.co.uk/

Oh, and a big thank you to the guys, who years ago, launched the hashtag that named the show... So here it is, Act 5 in the place of Act 3.

On today’s episode, I sit down the folks from The Civil Life Brewing Company in St. Louis, MO. The Civil Life is an awesome brewery that not only has an awesome tap room, but a super good tap list of true-to-style, low ABVs, that are really impressive. Listen to today’s to episode to hear how they grew from homebrewers, to some pioneers in the St. Louis craft beer scene.
On today’s episode, I sit down with the guys from Lauderale, a nano brewery located in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Lauderale is a pioneer in the south east Florida craft beer scene. What started as a homebrew idea has since grown in to a 3,200 sq foot taproom and brewery as well as a few gold and silver medals from different beer events. Lauderale is putting out some awesome beers. Right now they have about 30 rotating drafts, but always have 5 core beer including a tasty Robust Porter made with coconut. Today, I sit down with their head brewers and talk more about their beers.
I discuss the growing craft beer scene in Spain with David Ross and Patrick Tuck at their new Madrid pub La Osita. (The little bear) David and Patrick are craft ale brewers, pub owners, friends and business partners. I head along to meet them at their newly-opened craft beer pub in the heart of Madrid. We talk about about the growing popularity of craft beer in Spain, how the scene compares with the UK and USA and what Spaniards make of this new flavoursome arrival competing with Spain's more traditional beers. I sample a pint (or three) of one of their own house beers, 'Citrus Cream Ale' which the pair brew at their sister brewery 'Oso Brew Co.' and Patrick talks me through the craft brewing process and how they develop their ales. A few years ago, the wife and I took the kids on a family holiday to Vietnam. It was such a great experience for us all, the sights, the sounds the unique food and of course the amazing people. Before taking my trip I did a bit of research and found out that the was a pretty cool little craft beer scene beginning to bubble up to the surface over there, so I decided to do what I could to hijack my family holiday for the sake of craft beer. One of the items on my list was to visit a brewery I had read about called Pasteur St Brewing. Their mantra seemed cool, combine American Brewing techniques with the local produce to make great craft beer. One sip of the Pasteur St Jasmine IPA was all it took for me to fall in love with the Vietnamese craft beer scene…The man behind that beer, Alex Violette, was head brewer at Upslope Brewing in Colorado at the time that John Reid, Pasteur's founder pitched the idea to him. Alex loved it and moved to Saigon to begin a new brewing adventure. Very early on in the piece, Mischa Smith, knew he had to get in on the action of spreading craft beer love in Vietnam. He started as a volunteer behind the bar, being paid in beer and now he is Pasteurs St's Brand Ambassador.5 years and 200+ beers later, Pasteur St Brewing now has 4 tap Rooms and has nationwide distribution. It's been 3 years since I was in Vietnam and I was keen to find out how the scene is going in Vietnam, so I invited the guys on to talk all things Vietnamese Craft Beer.In this interview, Alex, Mischa and I try our best to keep things on track as we discuss such things as:How Pasteur St came to be;Making beers with local ingredients and winning awards for it;The perception that Vietnamese palates would be different to the western world; How the craft beer culture is Vietnam borrows from their well established coffee culture; When we will see their beers in Australia again; andMaking beer that smells like farts!Enjoy!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY 19 “Does Germany Have A Craft Beer Scene?” (feat. Certified Cicerone Linus in Cologne, Germany) Sarah and I are in Cologne, Germany! Our plan was to drink our way through the local specialty, Kölsch, but when we heard that there’s been an emerging craft beer scene, we reached out to a certified cicerone named Linus (@koelschbeertour on instagram) to talk about the hardest part of convincing Germans to open their mind to new things happening in the the beer world. In this Episode, Michael talks with Beer Me!’s Justin Smith “Godfather of National Beer Day”. Justin shares his vast experience with the Craft Beer Scene and the origins of National Beer Day (April 7).National Beer Day is celebrated in the United States every year on April 7, marking the day that the Cullen–Harrison Act was enacted after having been signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on March 22, 1933. This led to the Eighteenth Amendment being repealed on December 5, 1933, with ratification of the Twenty-first Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. April 6, the day prior to National Beer Day, is known as New Beer's EveUpon signing the legislation, Roosevelt made his famous remark, "I think this would be a good time for a beer. The law went into effect on April 7 of that year in states that had enacted their own law allowing such sales. The beer could contain up to 3.2% alcohol by weight (or 4.05% by volume) compared to the 0.5% limit of the Volstead Act, because 3.2% was considered too low to produce intoxication.People across the country responded by gathering outside breweries, some beginning the night before. On that first day, 1.5 million barrels of beer were consumed, inspiring the future holiday. Today, April 7 is recognized as National Beer Day and April 6 is known as New Beer's EveThe Cullen-Harrison Act was not the official end of prohibition in the US (that happened on December 5, 1933 when the 21st Amendment was ratified). What the Cullen-Harrison Act did do was redefine an "intoxicating beverage" under the Volstead Act. As such, April 7 is a beer specific holiday and should not be confused with Repeal Day celebrated on December 5.National Beer Day was first created in 2009 by Justin Smith of Richmond, Virginia.[10] After much prodding from his friend, Mike Connolly, Smith started a Facebook page that was noticed by Colorado Beer Examiner, Eli Shayotovich. Smith's promotion of the new holiday via various social media outlets was rewarded when the beer drinking app, "Untappd", created a badge for National Beer Day that rewarded participants that checked a beer into the app on April 7.[11] National Beer Day has since been trending every year on April 7 using the hashtag #NationalBeerDay.[citation needed]National Beer Day was officially recognized by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe in 2017National Beer Day was officially recognized on the Congressional Record by Congressman Dave Brat in 2017.In 2018, House Joint Resolution 90 was introduced in Virginia General Assembly to officially recognize National Beer Day in the Commonwealth of Virginia.Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel.
