Episode OverviewIn this episode of The Articulate Fly, host Marvin Cash sits down with Jason Taylor — a Philadelphia-area fly tier, Tier's Row fixture at the Edison show and regular contributor to Masters of the Fly — for a wide-ranging conversation about fly tying philosophy, natural materials and the tradition of innovation rooted in Bob Popovics' work. On this fly fishing podcast episode, Taylor traces his journey from a 2008 Belize honeymoon that ignited his passion for the sport, to the early-2010s online forums — particularly Stripers Online — that connected him with a formative community of Northeast saltwater tiers including Popovics and David Nelson. Taylor shares the philosophy that drives every session at the vise: every feature in a fly must serve a purpose, and materials should be used as sparingly as possible to achieve it. The conversation digs into the enduring versatility of the hollow fleye platform — what Taylor calls "the Christmas tree" — its adaptability across materials and applications, and his own innovations including an ostrich herl hollow fleye variant and a Surf Candy adaptation with embedded foam for neutral buoyancy when targeting false albacore in calm, glassy conditions. Taylor also offers detailed guidance on selecting and handling bucktail and ostrich herl, shares tying tips rarely covered elsewhere, and takes listeners through the exotic and vintage natural materials currently occupying his tying bench.Key TakeawaysHow to apply Bob Popovics' "Christmas tree" principle to hollow fleye design — preserving the core profile shape while freely adapting materials, proportions and techniques. Why using less material than you think you need almost always produces a more castable, livelier fly.How to select bucktail for hollow fleyes by identifying soft, kinky fiber pulled from the middle half to two-thirds of the tail for the most predictable flare under thread pressure. Why a neutrally buoyant fly presentation — using embedded foam under a hard body paired with an intermediate line — consistently outperforms standard Surf Candy patterns when false albacore become selective in calm, flat-water conditions. How to stabilize thread wraps using brushable cyanoacrylate applied directly to the thread before making final wraps rather than to the hook or materials. Why grading ostrich herl by length, taper and barb density — rather than just overall plume size — is critical to achieving consistent movement in large saltwater patterns.Techniques & Gear CoveredThe episode centers on hollow fleye construction — specifically the bucktail collar technique Bob Popovics developed and Taylor has refined over more than a decade, including his personal adaptation of palmering ostrich herl down a mono or shank base to create a mobile, feather-forward variant. Taylor details his Surf Candy–based neutral buoyancy modification, incorporating foam beneath the hard body to maintain a suspending presentation throughout the retrieve — not just the first few strips — which he argues better matches the behavior of bait sitting still in calm, low-turbulence water when paired with an intermediate fly line. He also covers his evolution of the Semper Fli, replacing time-consuming palmered feather fronts with commercially available fly tying brushes for consistent, production-speed results without sacrificing profile. On the tools and materials side, Taylor explains his preference for monofilament thread for virtually all saltwater work (with gel-spun for mounting eyes), walks through his grading process for both bucktail and ostrich herl, and advocates for brushable cyanoacrylate applied to the thread to more durably secure the final wraps. He references Regal as his favored vise, Tuffleye (a blue-light–cured resin with origins in dental applications) as his preferred coating for albie and Surf Candy patterns, and monofilament as the default thread for nearly all non-dry fly work.Locations & SpeciesTaylor's saltwater fishing world centers on the Northeast coast — New Jersey beaches and jetty structure where he targets false albacore (albies) and striped bass. The neutral-buoyancy Surf Candy modification he developed addresses a specific condition: calm, glassy water where bait is suspended neutrally in the water column rather than being pushed and darting erratically, a situation that allows albies to scrutinize flies far more critically than in ripping current. The foam-infused body paired with an intermediate line creates the illusion of naturally suspended bait being dragged just below the surface — a presentation Taylor describes as reliably effective when albies appear finicky. Jetty fishing accounts for heavy fly loss in his program, which directly influences his bench work: efficient, repeatable tying at high quality is not just an aesthetic goal but a practical one.FAQ / Key Questions AnsweredWhat is the "Christmas tree" principle and why has the hollow fleye remained relevant for decades?Taylor borrows this framing directly from Bob Popovics: the hollow fleye's core construction — bucktail tied in parallel to the shank and then pushed back on itself in a reverse tie to form an umbrella shape — creates a foundational profile that can be dressed up or stripped down infinitely. In its simplest form it ties in under five minutes and catches fish for anything; at the other extreme it accommodates exotic feather work, articulations and brush-based enhancements while retaining the original profile logic. Taylor's own ostrich herl variant illustrates how elastic the platform is: by palmering ostrich around a mono or shank base — orienting the material perpendicular to the base rather than parallel — he achieved a different movement profile while staying true enough to the Christmas tree shape that Popovics immediately recognized the technique as sound. That openness to adaptation was always the point: a baseline any tier could take and make their own.How do you select bucktail for hollow fleyes?Look for fibers that are soft, slightly kinky or wavy rather than pin-straight, and of medium hollowness. Taylor recommends pulling material from the middle half to two-thirds of the tail, where hair has enough hollow structure to flare predictably but enough density to stay controlled. He warns that the softest, most hollow base fibers can be too erratic for general hollow collar work and are better reserved for specific profile applications near the front of a fly.Why do false albacore seem to go finicky in calm, flat water?Taylor's answer is that this behavior isn't true selectivity — it's a physics mismatch. In ripping current or choppy conditions, bait is pushed around and moves erratically; a fly stripped through that same water fits right in. In flat, glassy conditions, suspended bait is genuinely neutrally buoyant and barely moving, and albies can see that a standard fly doesn't replicate that suspension. His foam-infused body maintains the neutrally buoyant presentation throughout the retrieve rather than sinking progressively as trapped air escapes, which he argues is the key to the pattern's effectiveness in those conditions. How should brushable cyanoacrylate be used correctly at the vise? The standard approach — applying glue directly to the hook shank or finished materials — can stiffen fibers and make delicate collars unpredictable. Taylor applies brushable super glue to the thread itself, just before making final securing wraps, which locks the thread without affecting material movement or positioning. This is especially useful when controlling sparse bucktail or fine feathers where a traditional coat would ruin the texture and action of a finished collar. Why does kinky or wavy bucktail produce a better hollow fleye than straight bucktail?Taylor explains that kinky, wavy bucktail creates an illusion of greater bulk and size than the amount of material actually on the hook warrants. Just as straightening curly hair reveals how much longer it truly is, the kinks and curves in wavy bucktail compress into a shorter measured length — meaning the fibers occupy more visual space on the hook than pin-straight hair of the same count would. For hollow fleyes, where the goal is achieving profile and the illusion of size with the least possible material, that optical magnification effect is a direct advantage. Straight bucktail, by contrast, gives you exactly what it is and nothing more.SponsorsThanks to TroutRoutes for sponsoring this episode. This week's episode is a full buffet of chaos, delusion, and questionable taste. Jeff and Sam kick things off by absolutely not agreeing on Devil Wears Prada 2, Sam fell asleep mid‑plot, Jeff is ready to nominate Meryl for sainthood, and both of them are convinced the other has the cinematic taste of a damp sock. From there, Jeff recounts his luxury‑priced mocktail, a steak that needed 24 hours to develop a personality, and a Leslie Odom Jr. concert so hot it nearly turned him into a Victorian fainting maiden.Jeff, meanwhile, is out here defending AMC like it's a religion, dragging Regal's “shitass seats,” and reminding Sam that TikTok agreeing with him doesn't mean she's right, it just means the algorithm thinks she's dramatic. We also get brunch noise complaints, golf‑related joint pain, dog‑sitting adventures, and a brief but passionate rant about millennials ruining art with unnecessary sequels. If you like unfiltered opinions, petty arguments, and two best friends who love each other but also low‑key want to strangle each other, this episode is your Roman Empire.

Hour 3, Segment 2 features Missouri Hemp Board member Brian Regal discussing proposed legislation HB 2641 that he says could severely restrict hemp production in Missouri by forcing manufacturing operations out of state while limiting in-state sales. Regal, who operates UR Lit Drinks under his South Point Hemp business in Union, argues the bill would benefit licensed marijuana operators while harming independent hemp producers and reducing economic opportunity in Missouri's agricultural sector. He explains that hemp-derived products, including THC-infused beverages, are primarily used by adult consumers seeking alternatives to alcohol or for wellness purposes, and says proper regulation should mirror alcohol-style oversight rather than outright restriction. The segment also highlights tensions between hemp and marijuana industries over market control, packaging rules, and retail access, with Regal urging Governor Mike Parson to veto the legislation after thousands of public comments were delivered in opposition. Don't Kill the Messenger with movie research expert Kevin Goetz
Send Kevin a Text MessageAnn Sarnoff, the first woman to serve as Chair and CEO of a major Hollywood studio and named one of Forbes' World's Most Powerful Women, joins host Kevin Goetz for a conversation about her path from a working-class upbringing in Massachusetts to the top of the entertainment industry. From her early days at Nickelodeon pioneering audience research, to guiding Warner Bros. through one of the most turbulent periods in Hollywood history, to her current role on the boards of major entertainment companies, Sarnoff shares insights on leadership, the power of knowing your audience, and what theaters must do to survive. From Wilbraham to Warner Bros. (03:11): Sarnoff discusses her roots in a blue-collar, Polish-Catholic family in Massachusetts, where she played three varsity sports, instilling competitive instincts and teamwork skills that would define her leadership style.Georgetown, Harvard, and the Road to Media (04:06): With no family connections to the industry and student loans to repay, Sarnoff built her foundation in strategy consulting before finally making her move into media.Nickelodeon and MTV (22:23): As head of strategy and research at Nickelodeon, Sarnoff championed deep audience research, running 200 focus groups a year. That rigor produced breakout hits like Rugrats and Blue's Clues.Audience as North Star (21:21): Sarnoff explains how cable television changed the broadcast model by starting with the customer, building channels around specific passions rather than the broadest possible reach. That philosophy of programming for real audiences became the throughline of her entire career.Breaking the Barrier at Warner Bros. (28:03): Ann shares her experience of becoming the first female CEO of Warner Bros. in 2019 and occupying Jack Warner's office, her picture joining a wall of men dating back to 1923. Sarnoff reflects on the women who came before her, and guiding the iconic studio through a pandemic, a streaming revolution, and a corporate merger. What Comes Next (36:00): Sarnoff breaks down how the combination of streaming, COVID-era demand, and supply-side surplus led to a wave of content the industry is only now working through. She's cautiously optimistic that a leaner, more creatively diverse slate is emerging on the other side.Theaters as Third Spaces (47:04): Drawing on her board role at Regal Cineworld, Sarnoff argues that the future of theatrical exhibition lies in becoming a communal “third space, and that the only real limit is imagination.”Host: Kevin GoetzGuest: Ann SarnoffProducer: Kari CampanoWriters: Kevin Goetz, Darlene Hayman, and Kari CampanoAudio Engineer: Gary Forbes (DG Entertainment)For more information about Ann Sarnoff:Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ann_SarnoffIMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2115707/Forbes: https://www.forbes.com/profiFor more information about Kevin Goetz:- Website: www.KevinGoetz360.com- Audienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678- How to Score in Hollywood: https://www.amazon.com/How-Score-Hollywood-Secrets-Business/dp/198218986X/- Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Substack: @KevinGoetz360- LinkedIn @Kevin Goetz- Screen Engine/ASI Website: www.
To the outside world, Ted Ammon had built the kind of life most people only dream about — a self-made Wall Street titan worth nearly $100 million, a Hamptons beach mansion, and twin children he adored. But behind the facade, his marriage to the brilliant, volatile Generosa had curdled into something dangerous. A bitter divorce, a secret affair, and a brash Long Island electrician with a criminal record had pushed an already unstable situation to the breaking point. When Ted's business partner flew out to the East Hampton beach house one October morning, what he found inside would haunt him forever. Thirty or more blows to the head. Stun gun burns. And not a single witness in sight. No murder weapon. No DNA. No fingerprints. Just a dead man in a mansion.Today's snack: H‑E‑B Blanched Almonds - Sweet Chile and H‑E‑B Twisters Sandwich Cookies - Mexican Hot Chocolate (thanks Carla!)Listen to part 2 today on PatreonSources:Crowley, Kieran. Last year on the SCTM, Greg and Dane covered WCW Uncensored 1995; now, a year later, they watch the 1996 edition. This year, we get Konnan and Eddie in a banger opener, Regal and Finlay brawling, The Giant going up against ..... The Lochness Monster? Plus, we also have BOOTYBOOTYBOOTYBOOTYMAN! Part 2, covering the Doomsday Cage Match between The Mega Powers and The Alliance to end Hulkamania, will come out sometime within the next seven days.
We have made it to WrestleMania X-Seven. Cindy and Ryan look at one of the most highly-regarded WrestleMania's ever, WrestleMania X-Seven from the Astrodome in Houston. Taking place just a week after the sale of WCW, the pinnacle of the Attitude Era, does this show stand the test of time? We'll discuss this and so much more! Quick run down of the sale of WCW and how Vince McMahon reigns supreme. The Chris Jericho/William Regal feud centering on Jericho besmirching Regal's tea. Some of the lower matches on the card stalling a bit, but at least being quick energetic matches. The goofiness of the Hardcore title match, including golf carts. Test's foot getting stuck in the rope. Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle having a well put together if not hastily built match. The show going on quite the hot streak of 5 matches to end it. The culmination (at least for 2 hours) of all of Mr. McMahon's asshole-ness. TLC II being an instant classic with everyone involved going all out, including each team's second. WWF embracing nostalgia and having the Gimmick Battle Royal, including the return of Mean Gene and Bobby Heenan. Undertaker and Triple H having a great match, that would have been even better without showing a crucial replay. Steve Austin and the Rock having another instant classic with one of the best Attitude Era main event style matches, ending with the shocking Austin heel turn, although the crowd isn't reacting that way. We look at the next two weeks of Raw where it is full steam ahead with the Austin heel turn, featuring a further beat down of the Rock, allying with Triple H and then attacking the Hardy Boyz and Lita. Enjoy the show!

The Impact of AI Voice Technology on Customer Engagement Shep interviews Alex Levin, CEO and co-founder of Regal. He talks about how AI-driven voice technology is transforming customer experience by making brand interactions more personal, efficient, and human-like. This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more: How is AI revolutionizing voice-based customer interactions in modern contact centers? What are the advantages of using voice over text for customer engagement? How can AI-powered agents improve customer satisfaction and retention rates? What role does personalization play in building a strong customer experience? How are businesses leveraging new technology to proactively reach out to customers? Top Takeaways: AI-powered voice technology is creating customer experiences so lifelike that they're almost indistinguishable from human agents. This is not created to deceive customers but to provide great experiences, and with the transparency that should come with interacting with AI. Despite all the advancements in texting, chatbots, and automation, the majority of customers still prefer to interact by voice, especially when they have complex or urgent issues. Since humans often think and speak faster than they type, voice interactions allow customers to have richer, more nuanced interactions with the brands they do business with. AI-powered agents can remember every detail of a customer's history and use that to solve real-time problems. They can predict needs and personalize conversations at scale. This level of personalization is reminiscent of the “good old days” when support and sales agents knew their customers personally, but at a scale that wasn't possible before. Building trust with AI often happens within the first ten seconds. Transparency about when customers are interacting with AI is important. The most successful AI experiences are those that match or exceed human-level service, especially in building trust and rapport. The cost for businesses using AI for customer support has drastically decreased. This opens new opportunities for businesses to reach customers they were unable to serve before. More than just a cost-cutting tool, AI is a tool for growth. Current AI agents can independently handle about 97% of customer interactions across complex industries such as banking, insurance, and healthcare. Customers are already responding to positive AI experiences by becoming more loyal and trusting of those brands. Plus, Shep and Alex discuss how brands that are early adopters of advanced AI voice agents will set a new benchmark for customer expectations. Tune in! Quote: "The easiest way to engage with a brand when you're in the moment of need is voice. You talk faster than you type. When you have an issue, like your credit card being used incorrectly or a missed delivery, you want to talk on the phone, not type it out.” About: Alex Levin is the CEO and co-founder of Regal, a company that helps enterprise brands reconnect with customers through AI-driven voice and text experiences. His approach centers on building trust and improving outreach, enabling brands to drive revenue through more timely, personal engagement.
