Steven does kind of another Yesshift News Desk Edition. First, an acknowledgement of Alan White's birthday, which then leads to tributes to Brian Wilson, who departed earlier this week. It is also the 40th anniversary of Bruford-Moraz album Flags. (And on Flag Day!) There's also a lyric video for Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks' "Once Upon a Dream" from the Frontiers channel. And Steven also includes a whole Venue Adventures segment talking about the bands he saw perform at Regal Inn in Lakewood: Monkeypaw Solution, Accepting The Aftermath, Fake Band Practice, and Thing of Twins.

Amy's back from Cannes, and this week, she and Paul are hitting the road with the 1995 comedy Tommy Boy. They dig into the behind-the-scenes tension between David Spade and Chris Farley, that it's one of Quentin Tarantino's favorite '90s comedies, and how Farley's tragic early death meant his full talent never truly got the spotlight it deserved.

Regal AI is revolutionizing the contact center landscape with its voice AI agent platform that's transforming how businesses communicate with customers. With $82 million in funding, Regal has positioned itself at the forefront of the AI revolution in customer service. In this episode of Category Visionaries, I spoke with Alex Levin, CEO and Co-Founder of Regal AI, about the company's journey from building tools to optimize human agent performance to pioneering voice AI agents that can handle customer interactions with unprecedented effectiveness. Topics Discussed: Regal AI's pivot from optimizing human agent calls to developing AI agents The economics of AI agents compared to human agents (10-20¢ per minute vs. $1 per minute) How AI agents achieve 97% containment rates versus the 20-40% traditional benchmark The challenges of enterprise sales in the contact center space The evolution of Regal's go-to-market strategy as AI capabilities have rapidly advanced The future of voice as the primary channel for brand engagement GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Timing your product evolution is critical: Alex emphasizes the importance of not moving too early or too late when pivoting to new technology. "If you invested too early, it was a waste, but if you wait too late then all the first trials with every company would be with another AI provider, not with us," Alex explains. Their decision to wait until LLMs were capable enough before focusing on AI agents prevented them from wasting resources on soon-to-be-obsolete technology while still allowing them to be early in the market. Enterprise sales requires embracing the process: When moving upmarket, Alex learned that trying to rush enterprise sales leads to poor outcomes. "If you try to rush it in an enterprise environment, which is possible, you're not going to have a good outcome," he shares. B2B founders should understand the sales timeline for their specific industry and be prepared for longer, more complex sales cycles when targeting enterprise customers. Build foundational technology that transcends AI hype: Regal's advantage came from building deep platform infrastructure before AI agents were ready. "Most of the companies that exist today, all they've ever built is this thing that interacts with the customer, the agent itself, the voice and the LLM, which is relatively trivial actually," Alex explains. By building integrations with customer data systems, decision engines, and channel management tools first, they created a more comprehensive solution that could quickly incorporate AI advances when the technology matured. Reconsider conventional marketing channels: Alex notes that traditional B2B marketing approaches are losing effectiveness: "A lot of the traditional channels that used to work just don't work or are not efficient anymore. So paid SEM, traditional sponsorships of online content, writing blog posts in some big paper... a lot of these demand gen channels are just highly ineffective." Founders should prioritize breaking through with authentic founder-led storytelling rather than relying solely on conventional demand generation tactics. The economics of AI can reverse long-standing business practices: Regal AI's solution flips conventional contact center wisdom on its head. As Alex explains, "Instead of calls being the most expensive thing you have, AI calls are the cheapest channel you have. So you lead with those calls and you do as many calls as possible because it's cheaper than any other channel." B2B founders should look for opportunities where AI fundamentally changes the cost structure of traditional business operations. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co
First: President Trump is soaking up all the pomp and circumstance on the first major international trip of his second term. He's in Saudi Arabia to sign multiple deals he says will bring hundreds of billions of dollars into the US. But criticism is ramping up within his own party over a jet he says he'll accept as a gift from the government of Qatar. Plus: A new book from CNN's Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson of Axios reveals Joe Biden's inner circle floated the idea of getting him a wheelchair if he was reelected at the same time they were publicly highlighting his vigor. And: The star witness in Sean "Diddy" Combs' criminal trials takes the stand. CNN was inside the courtroom so we can bring you all the breaking developments from Cassie Ventura's testimony. I, Stewart Alsop, welcomed Alex Levin, CEO and co-founder of Regal, to this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast to discuss the fascinating world of AI phone agents. Alex shared some incredible insights into how AI is already transforming customer interactions and what the future holds for company agents, machine-to-machine communication, and even the nature of knowledge itself.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversation!Timestamps00:29 Alex Levin shares that people are often more honest with AI agents than human agents, especially regarding payments.02:41 The surprising persistence of voice as a preferred channel for customer interaction, and how AI is set to revolutionize it.05:15 Discussion of the three types of AI agents: personal, work, and company agents, and how conversational AI will become the main interface with brands.07:12 Exploring the shift to machine-to-machine interactions and how AI changes what knowledge humans need versus what machines need.10:56 The looming challenge of centralization versus decentralization in AI, and how Americans often prioritize experience over privacy.14:11 Alex explains how tokenized data can offer personalized experiences without compromising specific individual privacy.25:44 Voice is predicted to become the primary way we interact with brands and technology due to its naturalness and efficiency.33:21 Why AI agents are easier to implement in contact centers due to different entropy compared to typical software.38:13 How Regal ensures AI agents stay on script and avoid "hallucinations" by proper training and guardrails.46:11 The technical challenges in replicating human conversational latency and nuances in AI voice interactions.Key InsightsAI Elicits HonestyPeople tend to be more forthright with AI agents, particularly in financially sensitive situations like discussing overdue payments. Alex speculates this is because individuals may feel less judged by an AI, leading to more truthful disclosures compared to interactions with human agents.Voice is King, AI is its HeirDespite predictions of its decline, voice remains a dominant channel for customer interactions. Alex believes that within three to five years, AI will handle as much as 90% of these voice interactions, transforming customer service with its efficiency and availability. The Rise of Company AgentsThe primary interface with most brands is expected to shift from websites and apps to conversational AI agents. This is because voice is a more natural, faster, and emotive way for humans to interact, a behavior already seen in younger generations.Machine-to-Machine FutureWe're moving towards a world where AI agents representing companies will interact directly with AI agents representing consumers. This "machine-to-machine" (M2M) paradigm will redefine commerce and the nature of how businesses and customers engage.Ontology of KnowledgeAs AI systems process vast amounts of information, creating a clear "ontology of knowledge" becomes crucial. This means structuring and categorizing information so AI can understand the context and user's underlying intent, rather than just processing raw data.Tokenized Data for PrivacyA potential solution to privacy concerns is "tokenized data." Instead of providing AI with specific personal details, users could share generalized tokens (e.g., "high-intent buyer in 30s") that allow for personalized experiences without revealing sensitive, identifiable information.AI Highlights Human InconsistenciesImplementing AI often brings to light existing inconsistencies or unacknowledged issues within a company. For instance, AI might reveal discrepancies between official scripts and how top-performing human agents actually communicate, forcing companies to address these differences.Influence as a Key Human SkillIn a future increasingly shaped by AI, Sam Altman (via Alex) suggests that the ability to "influence" others will be a paramount human skill. This uniquely human trait will be vital, whether for interacting with other people or for guiding and shaping AI systems.Contact Information* Regal AI: regal.ai* Email: hello@regal.ai* LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/alexlevin1/
As spring deepens and the evenings stretch softly toward summer, this week's episode invites you to rest beneath the ethereal bloom of the Foxglove Tree — Paulownia tomentosa. With its pale lavender flowers that blossom on bare branches, this remarkable tree appears like something from a dream, flowering in silence before its great green leaves unfold. We'll drift through its ancient Chinese origins, its mythical ties to the phoenix, and the delicate music of its timber, all while imagining the petals falling like lavender snow. With soothing narration, gentle history, and the poetry of Robert Herrick, this episode offers a quiet meditation on transience, grace, and renewal. Let the soft blossoms guide you into stillness, and the whispering leaves cradle you into rest. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Alex Levin, CEO and co-founder of Regal AI, is leading a bold transformation in the customer service industry through the use of advanced AI agents. Drawing from his experience, Levin recognized the inefficiencies and frustrations within traditional contact centers—long hold times, poor automation, and impersonal service. Regal AI was born out of this need to create more responsive, intelligent, and customer-friendly solutions. By designing AI agents that are always available, contextually aware, and capable of real-time personalization, Regal is redefining how businesses connect with their customers across voice, text, and email. Levin envisions a future where AI handles up to 90% of customer interactions, particularly in enterprise settings. He champions a voice-first, omnichannel strategy that makes support faster, more emotional, and more effective. Grounded in pragmatic execution, Regal focuses on building reliable systems with clear frameworks, not flashy prototypes. Levin also emphasizes the importance of ethical AI design, urging regulation in B2B communications and encouraging small businesses to document their processes before jumping into AI adoption.
