Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Shelby Mounts, who reflects on his 25 years of service with the US Navy and highlights the leadership lessons learned and his journey to becoming Executive Director of NextOp Veterans, a nonprofit organization focused on connecting veterans and military members to career opportunities. NextOp recruits, develops, and places military members and veterans into industry careers. The organization works one-on-one with enlisted service members and veterans to help translate military training and experiences into valued qualifications in the business community, and the organization works with and supports companies to develop and execute their veteran hiring and retention strategies.During the interview, Shelby talks about growing up in a US Navy household and how stories of service inspired him in childhood. Shelby talks about some of the childhood lessons he carries with him today, and then discusses his transition into the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. He shares how he was encouraged and selected to attend US Navy Flight School, something he had always dreamed of, and how he progressed as a pilot and officer to lead a helicopter squadron. He talks about some of training and missions, and lessons learned while deployed, and how those experiences have shaped his ability to support and empower his team.Shelby then talks about his process of transitioning out of the military, which started when he was on a special assignment as a Secretary of Defense Corporate Fellow at Shell Oil in New Orleans, LA, and then on tours at the Pentagon, which allowed him to build and leverage his network of personal relationships that opened a door for a new corporate opportunity. He then talks about the important work that NextOp Veterans is doing to help military members and veterans, like himself, with that same transition into industry careers and opportunities. He shares some of this history and growth for the nonprofit organization, talks about some of their key strategies and recent successes, and how they are partnering with other organizations to create a system that benefits the veterans and military members, education institutions and training programs, companies, and our communities. He wraps up with how the community can help support their efforts, the power of hiring veterans and words of encouragement for companies looking to gain a competitive advantage with veterans on their team.Visit https://nextopvets.org to learn more about NextOp Veterans.About Shelby Mounts:Shelby Mounts brings more than 30 years of experience in Defense and Industry leadership roles to NextOp Veterans. His private industry roles include CEO of Riverside Consulting Services, LLC, a small, independent Government Consulting services company, Chief Commercial Officer and EVP of Sales for Vita Inclinata Technologies, and Director of Defense Aerospace and Maritime Business Development at Allegheny Technologies Inc (ATI). Kermit Jones, Jr. came across the idea of a prepper book for kids when trying to decide how to explain the topic to his four young daughters. Having attended high school in a very rural part of Virginia, he later went on to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. After several years as a Surface Warfare Officer, he resigned his commission and entered the Chaplain Corps where he continues to serve his country as a Chaplain in the U.S. Navy Reserves. In addition to writing children's books, he instructs on topics of leadership, personal and emergency preparedness, self-reliance, and safety, and he has been a guest on several radio and talk show broadcasts. His gun safety book, “Prepper Pete's Gun of a Son,” has taken the number one spot on Kindle for the “Children's non-fiction” category. Between kids and his (multiple) careers, he has learned that it is important to “be prepared!”

KEY TAKEAWAYS If you spend enough time with computers I think you just figure out there's a whole other world in this application of computing and technology. I spent a lot of time in hacking forums online in the early 2000s, through that I got into early web development and learning the different ways to use the internet in ways it wasn't intended. 10 years later I came back around to cybersecurity as a professional. BEST MOMENTS‘RedTeaming is about simulating an adversary as they go about the process of trying to get into a network, computer, or facility.'‘As cybersecurity, as a field, has matured you'll find very specific signatures to different kinds of attackers in the way the actually go about doing that.'‘The challenges are, first and foremost, having enough people with the right skills to actually build APIs. Public facing APIs account for 14% of the total number of APIs that teams are buildings, and in some cases they account for 50-75% of a company's revenue.'‘Ransomware attacks are the 800lb gorilla in the room when it comes to threats… as we see organisations accelerating through digitisation/monetisation strategies, they're connecting more and more data and systems that used to be offline and you can't avoid that.' ABOUT THE GUESTTerence Bennett is the CEO of DreamFactory Software, a leader in API code automation based in Northern California. He has over 10 years of experience in cybersecurity, REST APIs, operations, and leadership. Previously, Bennett was the COO of Integrate.io and a member of Google's offensive security "RedTeam". At Google, he helped craft realistic cybersecurity exercises to test the company's defences. He has deep expertise in cybersecurity, penetration testing, and adversarial simulation. Bennett served in the U.S. Navy for over 8 years as a Naval Intelligence Officer and Surface Warfare Officer. He was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and worked at the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Master's degree from the U.S. Naval War College. As many of you know, I'm a proud Delawarian. There's nothing I enjoy more than watching our local businesses thrive. When a business's core mission is helping other Delawarians thrive, well, I'm sold.In this episode of Outside Insights, I sit down with Desa Burton, Executive Director of Zip Code Wilmington, a nonprofit coding bootcamp. Zip Code Wilmington provides adults with intensive software developer training, with no college degree requirements. In turn, the program helps build tech talent pipelines for employers in the Wilmington region. Many Zip Code students see dramatic boosts in their income after completing the program. This lifts up individuals and families while also benefiting the Wilmington community.During our chat, Desa shared her own career journey, from graduating the US Naval Academy and serving as a Surface Warfare Officer, to earning a law degree and working in intellectual property, and eventually, leading Zip Code Wilmington.Of course, I had to dig into Desa's leadership philosophies. She discussed the importance of empowering her team to help them grow, which she links back to lessons learned from mentors in the military.Other key topics we discuss in this episode of Outside Insights include; taking care of yourself to avoid burnout, overcoming inertia to embrace change, and continually developing new skills. If you're a burgeoning entrepreneur with an idea, someone interested in learning new skills, or you just want to learn more about businesses doing good in Delaware communities, this episode is for you.Reply and let me know what topics you'd like to hear next on the podcast!Until next time, friends.ChrisZip Code Wilmington:Website: https://www.zipcodewilmington.comEmail: info@zipcodewilmington.comBooks mentioned:A Whole New Mind by Daniel PinkOutliers by Malcolm GladwellTipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell

In this episode, Joe is joined by Navy Veteran and founder of the Government Contracting Academy, Randy Wimmer. After graduating from the Naval Academy, Randy served for ten years as a Surface Warfare Officer before leaving the Navy to focus on his family and started to work as a government contractor. Randy saw the opportunities available as an entrepreneur and started his own government contract business. His path to success wasn't easy; Randy focused on learning the skills he needed and the best practices to win lucrative government contracts. To help fellow Entrepreneurs, Randy founded the Government Contracting Academy, providing actionable information and tools over a 12 month, self paced course. Learn more about the Government Contracting Academy here. About Our Guest Following ten years of naval service, Randy Wimmer made the difficult choice to leave a promising naval career for the routine working hours of a contractor position to start a family. After learning what he calls the Contractor Commandments, he enjoyed being a billable government contractor and would have been content with a career supporting Defense Department contracts. However, his growing family was starting to outpace his income, sparking Randy's interest in entrepreneurship to increase his earning potential. Like many aspiring entrepreneurs, he'd become motivated by reading various business books, only to realize he didn't know how to apply the business theory that he'd just learned. His lack of actionable knowledge became apparent during his first startup attempt. Join the conversation on Facebook! Every time we use our lean practices to define and solve a problem, we create knowledge. How can we improve our organizational recognition and management of all that newly created knowledge – which is key to not having the same problem occur again? It turns out that knowledge management itself requires a process and continuous improvement and Dr. Cindy Young is here to share her insights. Cindy is the Founder/CEO of CJ Young Consulting, LLC, a knowledge management consulting firm, and Curriculum Development and Training Lead with Leidos in Virginia Beach after retiring as a Surface Warfare Officer with 23 years in the U.S. Navy. She holds professional certifications as a PMP, LSSMBB, and CMQ/OE. Cindy has written for Harvard Business Review and is a Management columnist for ISE Magazine. In September 2020, she gave a TEDx Talk called “A Knowledge Mindset: What You Know Comes from Where You Sit." In February 2023, her book, The Knowledge Management Memory Jogger®, was published by Goal/QPC. KEY TOPICS IN THIS PODCAST: 00:02:40 – Definition of knowledge management 00:04:44 – Importance of documentation of process improvement 00:06:38 – Managing tacit knowledge in the workplace and strategies for sharing it 00:12:51 – Tips for managing a remote working team and prioritizing knowledge management 00:19:00 – Machine vs. human-centric management 00:22:20 – The Knowledge Management Memory Jogger 00:27: 20 – Knowledge management and organizational culture 00:29:28 – Power and mode of sharing knowledge 00 32: 10 – Knowledge findability and professional knowledge management 00:36: 20 - Knowledge management as a core competency and placement of knowledge manager KEY TAKEAWAYS Knowledge management is the process of understanding, sharing, and managing information an organization. Documentation of process improvement helps ensure transparency, efficiency, and knowledge sharing. Tacit knowledge can be acquired from other people's lives and past experiences, and can used by finding a mentor in a related field or process. Establish a rhythm for your team that includes time for management and action. In return, it will enable each team member to contribute their knowledge and experience to the group. Knowledge management memory jogger encourages organizations to foster communication between departments and break down silos. It allows personnel to understand their roles and how they can work together. Leaders should create a culture of knowledge sharing, where collaboration is highly promoted, and respected, allowing colleagues to learn from mistakes and empower each other. Knowledge findability: knowledge managers must be skilled in research, communication, collaboration, and understanding organizational structures and systems. Memorable Quotes From Dr. Cindy J Young “Professionally managing knowledge requires special skills to organize information, break down silos, and make knowledge accessible, but one also needs to know how to communicate with people who may be withholding information.” CONNECT WITH DR. KC Chhipwadia has served our great country in two capacities. He spent 20 years as a senior human space flight engineer at NASA Johnson Space Center, supporting over 50 Space Shuttle missions, including the Space Shuttle Columbia accident investigation. If that wasn't impressive enough, KC has spent over 20+ years in the United States Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer, including deployments to Iraq looking for those missing-in-action and Afghanistan with Naval Special Warfare. His NASA and US Navy life-changing events, challenges, and experiences uniquely prepared KC to discover his life's true purpose ― to improve the odds and inspire others to seek and achieve their dreams by crushing inequities ― starting with student-athletes. KC is the founder and owner of Athlete Foundry, a company with a suite of products to lift and positively impact pre-college student-athletes & families across the country. KC is convinced deep to his core that the creation of Athlete Foundry was 20 years in the making, forged through his NASA and U.S. Navy life-changing events, challenges, and experiences, each uniquely preparing him to discover his life's true purpose ― to improve the odds and inspire others to seek and achieve their dreams by crushing inequities ― starting with student athletes. Before starting Athlete Foundry, KC has been privileged to serve our great Nation in two capacities, 20 years as a senior human space flight engineer at NASA Johnson Space Center, supporting over 50 Space Shuttle missions, including the Space Shuttle Columbia accident investigation, with his last post serving as the manager of the Space Shuttle astronaut launch & entry suit and crew escape system; and 20+ years, active & reserve combined, in our United States Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer, including deployments to Iraq looking for our missing-in-action, and Afghanistan with Naval Special Warfare. When was the last time the US Navy made the case for a significantly larger navy to defend its interests on the high seas?Yep, back when Ole Sal was a Midshipman and EagleOne was as close to his service in Vietnam than Sal was to his service in Afghanistan - the 1980s.What lessons can we take from that relatively successful intellectual, political, and personal struggle to grow our Navy?Using his recent article in Naval History Magazine, Lessons from the 600-Ship Navy, as a starting point for our conversation, our guest for the full hour will be Lieutenant Joseph Sims, USN.Lieutenant Sims is a Surface Warfare Officer and 2018 graduate of the US Naval Academy where he majored in history and competed four years on the varsity tennis team. Why Listen:This is an inspirational episode. Jesse is a case study in pursuing one's dream - figuring out what unique aspirations you have, finding others to hold you accountable, and not letting the opinions or doubts of others get in your way. Jesse talks about how he used a kickstarter campaign, credit cards, and his personal savings to inch his way closer - one race at a time - to becoming a NASCAR driver. We talk about advocating for yourself, how to run a crowdfunding campaign, and how to train day in and day out to make your dreams come true. The topics we cover in this episode are relevant to every single career path - whether you too want to become a NASCAR driver, or want to start your own business, or write a book, or whatever your personal goals may be. If you like this episode check out our show notes at BeyondTheUniform.io, where, in addition to the resources we discuss in this episode, I also list 3 other episodes very similar to this one. About Jesse:Jesse Iwuji is the first active duty US Naval Officer to compete in NASCAR. He is also the Founder of The Red List Group which is an auto racing event company bringing drag racers together from the West to compete for trophies and cash prizes at track events. He started out at the Naval Academy, after which he served as a Surface Warfare Officer for 7 years before transitioning to the Navy Reserves.
Have you ever heard of anyone who was not a United States citizen become one and enlist in the U.S. Military the same day they received their citizenship? In this week's episode, you will meet and hear from Hernán Luis y Prado – born in Argentina, grew up in France, and became a U.S. citizen, only to join the U.S. Navy on the same day. Hernan is a 15 year Navy veteran, humanitarian, entrepreneur, and CEO of Workshops for Warriors, a nonprofit for transitioning and struggling service members, offering them advanced manufacturing training certification and job placements. His attraction to America is that it is the only nation governed by an idea, which is expressed in the Constitution and not a person or bloodline. That's what this patriot chooses to support. Listen to this incredible man's story of aspiration and success in the country he loves so dearly. In this episode you will hear: I sold everything we had to start Workshops for Warriors. We train America's veterans to rebuild America's advanced manufacturing and economic backbone. We harness discipline, an ethical mindset, tenacity, and focus on our skills. You're a badass, you can do anything, improvise, adapt, overcome. It never rains, it only liquid sunshine. When you get out of the military, you go from a suit of armor to the civilian world & are cast adrift in free fall. America needs welders, machinists, and fabricators. You need a skillset. Our school is a velvet funnel. You come from a really tight straw & now you gotta give more liberty until you get to the civilian world. There are 2.3 million unfilled jobs due to unskilled labor in America. Our goal is to rebuild America one veteran at a time. We do the hard things every day. It's the easy things that kick our butts. People come in - shoulders hunched down. By the end of the first week you see them coming back. The most important thing that Americans like and right now is vision. [Marcus Luttrell] “One team, one fight.” Together we can do this, alone we can't.
