The city of New Orleans is in Orleans Parish. For reasons that are mainly economic and infrastructure-related, Orleans and neighboring Jefferson Parish are inter-dependent. The two parishes are very different. The rivalry between them isn't on the scale of the Saints and the Flacons, but it's definitely real. If you live in Jefferson Parish, the basic perception is, “Sure, New Orleans has great restaurants and music clubs but it's dangerous, dirty, and dysfunctional.” If you live in New Orleans, the perception is, “Sure, everything works in Jefferson Parish, but it's sterile and soulless.” Nothing illustrates the real-world differences between the parishes better than the business stories of this editon of Out to Lunch's two guests. The Tale In Jefferson Parish, the heart of the retail economy is Veterans Boulevard. There used to be a bowling alley on Veterans, called Paradise Lanes. In 1995 it was knocked down and replaced by a Barnes & Noble bookstore. The owners of the bowling alley retained a retail space in the New Barnes & Noble building. They called their new store Paradise Cafe & Gifts. 21 years later, in 2016, two of the owner's granddaughters, sisters Jenny McGuinness and Jessica Woodward, along with their mom, Linda Dalton, transformed the store into a home accessories and gift shop, and called it Phina. Next, they opened two more Phina stores – one on Metairie Road and another on Harrison Avenue. In 2023 they bought a company called The Basketry, that specializes in personal and corporate gift baskets. Today the combined companies have 50 employees and business is booming. Our story from Orleans Parish is equally successful. It's based on a single word. A word that, if you live in Orleans Parish, has enormous practical and symbolic meaning: Potholes. Nothing typifies the perception of the dysfunction of the city of New Orleans like the pot-holed state of our streets. In 2019, an anonymous person started an Instagram account illustrating the sorry condition of our streets. The name of the account is the sentence many New Orleanians say or think as they drive or bike around town, Look at This Effin Street. (On Instagram "effin" is the f-word. Because none of our podcasts are explicit we're sticking with "effin" to avoid the bot-police.) The Look at This Effin' Street Instagram account was an instant success. People started contributing photos of New Orleans streets and today the account has over 120,000 followers – including by the way, The City of New Orleans. How do you monetize this kind of social media success? You can't exactly sell potholes. But you can sell merch about potholes. And that's what the anonymous founder of Look at This Effin Street did. He contracted with a local merch company, InkMule, to make stickers, baseball caps, T-shirts and other pot-hole merch. The anonymous business-person behind this successful social-media driven venture is still anonymous. On this edition of Out to Lunch we referring to him as Effin Street. Two Parishes Next time you're driving along Veterans Boulevard, Harrison Avenue, or Metairie Road, you might notice one of the three Phina stores. But you probably won't think anything at all about the street you're driving on. If you keep driving east from there on surface streets, you'll cross the parish line into Orleans Parish. At that point you may well find yourself remarking, “Look at this effin' street.” Jenny and Effin Street's respective experiences are model examples of the differences between Orleans and Jefferson parishes. But their histories and businesses are also representative of the synergy that exists between the two parishes and the people who live, work and play in both of them. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns on St. Charles Avenue in Uptown New Orleans. You can find photos from this show by Blake Langlinais at itsneworleans.com. About an hour north of Jackson, Miss. the Justice Department is investigating a small town's police force. The allegations? Unlawful stops, retaliation, racist roadblocks and excessive force. As the Gulf States Newsroom's Kat Stromquist reports, residents still worry they won't see change.Property taxes are the basic means by which our government has money to operate, but many residents often don't completely understand how they work. Thankfully, the Bureau of Governmental Research is on a mission to better inform Orleans Parish voters on how these taxes impact them. BGR's President and CEO Rebecca Mowbray tells us what residents can learn from the organization's recently-released property tax dashboard. The end of Mardi Gras means the beginning of Lent, and even if you don't observe the holiday, the days following Fat Tuesday are often marked by at least a few days without drinking — or maybe, just indulging a little less. But there was a time when alcohol was illegal throughout the country — although the ban on booze was largely ignored in south Louisiana. Back in December, WRKF's Adam Vos spoke about prohibition history with Sam Hyde, professor of history and director of the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies at Southeastern Louisiana University. Today, we give that conversation a second listen. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Bob Pavlovich. In this episode, District Attorney Stephen Dwight sits down with Chief of Litigation Bobby Holmes and Deputy Chief of Litigation Charles Robinson, both of who are on his executive team within the office. Bobby & Charles both started their careers as prosecutors in Orleans Parish and ultimately made their way to Calcasieu where they worked their way to the top. According to the most recent statistics, under 400,000 people live in Orleans Parish. In a regular year, around 19 million people come to visit us. These tourists spend a total of close to $10B. This reportedly contributes a massive 40% of the city's annual tax revenue. Is having a tourist-dependent economy good for us? Or bad for us? Well, that depends who you ask. Many people who work in hospitality point out that their jobs are poorly-paid, with few if any benefits. There's no job security. And they claim that a tourist-based economy traps them - and the city - in a cycle of poverty that does nothing but perpetuate a glaring wealth gap. On the other hand, people in organizations that promote New Orleans tourism – whose incomes are typically substantially larger than hospitality workers - claim tourism is vital. They say that without tourism our individual taxes would have to increase by thousands of dollars a year, and our entire city economy would be strained to the point of collapse. Which side of this argument is true? Petr Ricchiuti puts that question to Dr. Andrew Ward. Dr. Ward is an Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Development at Tulane University, and he specializes in a branch of practical study called Sustainable Tourism. In 2018 we introduced you to Allison Albert Ward. At that time, Allison had quit her job as an accountant and founded a company called Pet Krewe, making costumes for pets. That has turned out to be a good move. Today, Pet Krewe's costumes are sold in 600 independent stores and several mass retailers in the United States. They're also sold internationally. Outside of China, Pet Krewe is the biggest pet costume company in the world. But, even after achieving world domination, Pet Krewe is not slowing down. They've formed partnerships with Hasbro, Sesame Street, and others, and their business continues to grow by hundreds of percent a year. If you're a regular listener to Out to Lunch you might have noticed that on each show we usually invite guests who have something in common. So, you might be wondering what the link could possibly be between sustainable tourism and pet costumes. Well, there is one. Marriage. Andrew Ward and Allison Albert Ward are married. To each other. Unless you happen to be friends with them and hang out with Andrew and Allison Albert Ward, it's unlikely you've heard a discussion about pet costumes and sustainable tourism anywhere else recently. Or ever. In the days before social media, traditional media outlets bolstered their reputation as information sources by scooping each other – getting a story first and owning it. These stories were billed as “exclusive,” meaning it was content you could get from one place and one place only. Today, information spreads around the world in moments. We're all instantly reading and hearing versions of the same content. Except, that is, for this conversation. You won't hear anything like this conversation, anywhere. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at NOLA Pizza in the NOLA Brewing Taproom. You can see photos from this show by Jill Lafleur. at our website itsneworleans.com. I had no idea what restorative justice was up until two years ago. It was naïve of me to think that justice was always “served” in the courts of law – buildings with high plinths, long walkways and large rooms with the typical setup that we see on screen. And because I did not think it was possible to create spaces for conflict resolution and reconciliation outside of the courts, the first time I saw circle work being done within the restorative justice method, I was surprised by the candidness and vulnerability of the circle participants and how deeply satisfying the process was. In this show we will be talking with Dr. William Aprill of Aprill Risk Consulting about Showtime's new series Who is America and how it is capitalizing on the psychology of the progun agenda to make a statement. He presently maintains a private practice and consultancy specializing in post-traumatic interventions and other disciplines. William is a former deputy sheriff (Orleans Parish, LA, Criminal Sheriff's Office) and Special Deputy US Marshal (Eastern District of Louisiana). Links related to William Aprill Aprill Risk Consulting ARC on Instagram Main Topics of Today's Episode: I was really looking forward to Talking with William about how and why the Who is America crew finds success in manipulating conservative leaders. We look at how we can avoid this type of a confidence game and what the victimization of these folks might say about the firearms industry. Who is America - Sacha Baron Cohen - Borat, Ali G - manipulating and embarrassing people for what seems to be political gain? What are your thoughts when you see this type of “comedy”? Many of the folks That have been targeted have been conservative in political leanings and many from in the gun world. This has of course brought attention to the show from several angles. What is the cost of this? What are the likely consequences that a duped person might experience? How is it that such successful and intelligent people can be goaded into doing such silly, nonsensical things? Examples from SSA Podcast The Milgram Experiment. Can you briefly describe it and what was learned from it. Why would this experiment be considered unethical to conduct today? How is what Cohen and Showtime are doing different? The Netflix Documentary The Push Uses some simple screening to select people that tip toward compliant behavior Would you expect that Who is America is using screening like this to increase compliance? What does it say about our culture in general and maybe more specifically about the firearms industry that some of our leaders are being duped this badly? In one of the Who is America Clips a scientist avoids getting sucked in. Why do you suppose she is able to avoid the pitfalls? What does the firearms industry need to change to help people not be so silly? How can the average person avoid being manipulated by a salesperson, a business associate, a con, a violent criminal? "Give me a lawyer dog" apparently refers to some strange animal only found in Louisiana that has four legs, wags it's tail, and has a law degree. What's in the News with stories on prostitution, a Catalonia update, my October Contest Winners, a nurse Wubbels update, Trump's Twitter, DUI on a horse, and free-market vs. government. Also, and Ancap App segment with updates on Open Bazaar and Signal. And, a Burning Books segment on Chasing the Scream by Johann Hari. This episode is brought to you by Tom Woods's Liberty Classroom, helping you to become a smarter and more informed libertarian than ever before, for just 24 cents a day. WHAT'S RUSTLING MY JIMMIES In one of the most egregious examples of justice being denied I have ever seen, this one really rustled my jimmies. The courts in Louisiana have shown utter disregard for reason, logic, rationality, and common sense in the case of Warren Demesme, who was 22 at the time of his arrest. Warren was being interrogated by New Orleans police in October 2015 after two young girls claimed he had sexually assaulted them. It was the second time he'd been brought in, and he was getting a little frustrated, court records show. He had repeatedly denied the crime. Finally, Demesme told the detectives: “This is how I feel, if y'all think I did it, I know that I didn't do it so why don't you just give me a lawyer dog 'cause this is not what's up.” Sometime after this, Demesme made admissions to the crime, prosecutors said, and was charged with aggravated rape and indecent behavior with a juvenile. He is being held in the Orleans Parish jail awaiting trial. The punctuation and spelling, arguably critical to Demesme's use of the nickname “dog,” was provided by the Orleans Parish District Attorney's office in a brief, and then adopted by Louisiana Associate Supreme Court Justice Scott J. Crichton. The sentence in question is officially in the brief as "give me my lawyer dog" with no comma between the words lawyer and dog and with the word dog spelled d-o-g. WHAT'S IN THE NEWS In the war on prostitution news, a federal court heard arguments recently challenging California's criminalization of prostitution, in a case that could have implications for sex work laws across the nation. In a Catalan independence update, Spanish officials moved in to arrest the Catalan government's leadership last week. President Carles Puigdemont and a number of members of the cabinet fled to Brussels, Belgium. Spain then issued an international arrest warrant for Puigdemont and a Madrid High Court judge asked Belgium to arrest Puigdemont and four associates after they ignored a court order to return to Spain. In a nurse Wubbels update, as I expected, the taxpayers are the losers in this situation. University Hospital nurse Alex Wubbels has agreed to a $500,000 payment to settle a dispute over her arrest by a Salt Lake City police officer after she barred him from drawing blood from an unconscious patient, her attorney said Tuesday. In national security news, apparently, a rogue employee of Twitter shut down President Trump's account on his last day on the job. The deactivation Thursday sparked deep and troubling questions about who has access to the president's personal account, @realDonaldTrump, and the power that access holds. In it's about your safety news, a 53-year-old woman was arrested and charged with driving drunk while riding a horse down a busy Florida highway -- and yes, you hear that shit that right. In free markets for the win news, Tesla has used its solar panels and batteries to restore reliable electricity at San Juan's Hospital del Niño (Children's Hospital), in what company founder Elon Musk calls "the first of many solar+battery Tesla projects going live in Puerto Rico." And, finally, in some show news, we've created a Facebook group for Pax Libertas Productions for all of you to interact with all of the PLP podcast hosts. I'm in there, of course, as is Brian McQuade from Resist the Empire, and Scott McDonald and Adam Brown from Ancap Barber Shop. ANCAP APPS Two apps that have been featured in this segment in the past have had some significant updates that I want to let you know about. First, OpenBazaar, the free online marketplace with no platform fees and no restrictions has just released their 2.0 version. OpenBazaar is a different way to do online commerce. It's a peer to peer application that doesn't require middlemen, which means no fees & no restrictions. OpenBazaar connects people directly via a peer to peer network. Data is distributed across the network instead of storing it in a central database. Version 2.0 is a completely new network, separate from the earlier version of the OpenBazaar network. They learned a lot from the 1.0 version, and with this information, they've made the new OpenBazaar one of the most user-friendly decentralized applications ever built. They've added lots of highly requested features as well. The other product with an update is one that I use almost daily. The Signal encrypted messaging app now has a full desktop app for Mac, Windows, and Linux. The previously had a Google Chrome app for the product that they'be now replaced with the full desktop version, so if you previously had the Chrome version, you will need to install this new desktop version. BURNING BOOKS I heard about this book, Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs, when the author, Johann Hari, was on episode 86 of Felony Friday with John Odermatt as part of the Lions of Liberty network. A few weeks later, it was on sale on Audible for $4.99, so I picked it up and listened to it.
