Campus Whisper Networks: Knowing with Sexual Assault Survivors (Rutgers University Press, 2026) examines how personal knowledge about student sexual assault circulates within college campus communities. Based upon both qualitative and quantitative survey data, Dr. Janet Hinson Shope and Dr. Richard Pringle's research demonstrates that students who have been sexually assaulted tell someone—almost always a friend. Most college students know someone who has been assaulted. Simply knowing, by means of relationships, that one or more peers have been assaulted affects the knowers, and the effects reverberate unevenly across campuses. Dr. Shope and Dr. Pringle highlight the structural properties that prohibit relational knowledge from becoming official institutional knowledge, confining it to whispers and secrecy within informal spheres of knowledge. The rules governing the circulation of such knowledge create an uneven epistemic field of sexual assault. This uneven field is consequential for the communities, affecting survivors and their confidants and shaping student views of the college community. Campus Whisper Networks demonstrates how personal and institutional avoidance, both the “need to not know” and “no need to know,” creates knowledge gaps that hide the community's wounds and prevent personal knowledge from becoming social knowledge. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. What if the worst moments of our lives are actually doorways to something greater? This powerful exploration of Philippians chapter 1 challenges us to see adversity through a completely different lens. Paul writes from prison—not a comfortable house arrest, but genuine chains and suffering—yet his message overflows with joy and purpose. We discover that Paul doesn't hide his struggles or pretend everything is fine. Instead, he reveals nine profound ways that difficulty can become a catalyst for spiritual growth and kingdom impact. The gospel advances precisely because of his chains, not in spite of them. His brothers and sisters become bolder, not discouraged, by witnessing his faithfulness. Prayer becomes more fervent, the Holy Spirit's power flows more freely, and introspection leads to deeper commitment. Perhaps most striking is Paul's declaration that suffering for Christ is a privilege—something granted to us, not something to merely endure. This isn't toxic positivity or denial of pain; it's a radical reorientation toward eternal perspective. When we face our own seasons of hardship, we're invited to ask not 'How can I escape this?' but 'What can I receive from this?' The question isn't whether we'll face adversity, but whether we'll allow God to squeeze every drop of goodness from it, transforming our trials into testimonies that magnify Christ and encourage others.

CHARLESTON GOTHIC Episode 4: Tekeli The Charleston Library Society has survived fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, and war—emerging each time with its treasures intact. Among those treasures: the world's most complete archive of Charleston newspapers from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In this episode, we enter the stacks where a ghost named Hinson is said to wander, where Henry Timrod's blood-stained manuscript bears witness to a poet's final days, and where a century-old scholarly article waited decades for someone to understand what it revealed. What was Edgar Allan Poe really searching for when he visited Charleston's archives during his time at Fort Moultrie? For over a hundred years, the legend said he came looking for pirate treasure—the buried gold that would inspire "The Gold-Bug." But a 1922 discovery by a Texas scholar suggested something far more personal. Following threads that connect the Poetry Society of South Carolina, a Harvard-trained philologist, and the vanished stage of the Charleston Theatre, we trace Poe's footsteps to a secret hidden in plain sight—one that may unlock the strangest passage he ever wrote. The answer lies where it has always been: in the newspapers, in the archives, in the advertisements for a play called Tekeli. Sources: Books - Allen, Hervey. As summer turns to fall, ITR Live returns with fresh energy for the political season. Chris Hagenow and John Hendrickson kick off the episode by recapping the post–Labor Day shift when campaigns and legislative conversations get serious again. With schools back in session and vacations over, the political calendar is heating up, and ITR Live is here to break it all down. The discussion opens with the latest update in the 2026 governor's race as Adam Steen joins the field. Chris and John examine how his late entry could affect the dynamics, what messages Republican candidates are testing, and how Rob Sand is using his uncontested path on the Democratic side to shape a negative narrative about Iowa's policies. The hosts push back, reminding listeners that Iowa's fiscal track record is strong, taxpayer-focused, and worth defending.Next, the episode covers the big news in Iowa's U.S. Senate race. Senator Joni Ernst has announced she will not seek reelection, setting the stage for Ashley Hinson to emerge as the frontrunner. Chris and John explain why Hinson's ground game and deep connections across Iowa make her a formidable candidate, while also highlighting the open congressional seat this creates in northeast Iowa. Finally, the hosts turn to Iowa's revenue picture. With the flat tax now in place, income tax collections are down — by design. Chris and John emphasize that lower collections are not a crisis but a sign that taxpayers are keeping more of their money. The real challenge is on the spending side. They argue that lawmakers must resist new spending commitments, look critically at exemptions and giveaways, and stay focused on fiscal discipline.
Political scientists discuss recent headlines, including U.S. Rep. Hinson's run for Senate, another potential government shutdown and more.
Jack Hinson, known as “Old Jack,” began the Civil War as a wealthy Tennessee planter with no intentions to enlist in the Civil War. That changed in 1862 when Union troops executed his sons and displayed their heads on his plantation gateposts. At 57 years old, Hinson armed himself with a custom .50 caliber rifle and launched a one-man war of revenge. From hidden ridges above the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, he targeted Union officers, disrupted gunboats, and carved his legend as one of the deadliest guerrilla snipers of the Civil War. Some claim his tally reached 100 men, while his rifle bore 36 notches. Whether avenger or violent secessionist, Jack Hinson became a symbol of how personal tragedy could fuel relentless warfare.
