The Apostle John is quite old when he writes the Gospel that bears his name. All of the other apostles by this time have been martyred, and no doubt other friends have also gone home to be with the Lord. I am sure along with the prodding of the Holy Spirit, there were people who desired that John would tell his story and experiences with Christ. What was He like? Did He joke? Did He pull pranks? Was He always serious? What was it like to be taught by Him? What was it like to see Him after the resurrection? So many questions, and they wanted to capture his thoughts.John most likely dictated the fourth book of the New Testament as the Holy Spirit inspired him. He took a completely different approach from how most people would write a book. Typically one begins with an introduction, and then builds up towards the climax throughout the body of the book, and finally in conclusion reveals the “punch line”, the purpose behind the book. Not John; he reveals the most important thing on his mind upfront. He speaks of The Word that was in the beginning and was God, and through this Word all things were made (John 1:1-3). In him was life, and He was the true light in every person (vv 4,9). However, even though He created the world, the world didn't know Him. He came to his own, but they rejected Him. But to those who received Him, He gave them the authority to become sons and daughters of God (vv 10-12). John then tells us why Jesus came to this earth in Verse 14: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”No one says this as clearly as John. He was the first one to summarize Christmas for us. My prayer is that this Christmas you will be full of Jesus so that others may be filled with Jesus.

Monday Morning Musings is a hodgepodge of contemplations as I begin a new week. Check-in on Monday morning to receive a myriad of thoughts from my vapid brain. The written and audio can be found at www.cornfieldtheology.com Every Book and Every Word Matters When is the last time you read and studied 3 John? Not John 3 but 3 John. Several years ago, another pastor and I preached through the short books of the Bible. I was tasked with 2 and 3 John. They are the two shortest books. I recently re-preached my sermon on 3 John. I don’t re-preach sermons often unless I am a guest of another church. But due to travel leading up to the 4th of July, I made an exception. In my study of 3 John, I was reminded how every book and every word in the Bible matters. Every word and every book has something to teach. If you believe all of God’s Word is sufficient, reading Romans and 3 John is an opportunity to be instructed by God. What’s the Point? You might be wondering, what’s your point? Good for you that God reminded you that every book of the Bible has significance. Well, when’s the last time you read through 3 John or Leviticus? Leviticus isn’t the most exciting book in the Bible. But it’s still valuable. Leviticus is still able to instruct. Leviticus helps build out the greater story arc of the Bible. Here is a verse from Leviticus that has had staying power. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.– Leviticus 19:18 I understand that the Law in Leviticus isn’t the most exciting read, but it’s still a part of the Bible. God spoke, and He continues to speak through the Book of Leviticus. Cherry Picking Listen, I love Romans. Paul’s ability to frame a theological argument in Romans is second to none. We are currently going through the Book of Ephesians at Redemption Hill Church. Ephesians is a treasure trove of rich theology, especially chapters 1-3. But there is more to discover and learn, and Bible readers need to resist the temptation to constantly cherry-pick what they read. There is more to God’s Word than your favorite books and verses. Yes, your favorite books and verses will serve your soul, but there is more. Don’t stop after the Book of Exodus, but slug through the remainder of the Pentateuch. Don’t stop after 1 John, but turn the page to 2 John, and then the next page to 3 John. You can spend a lifetime reading the Bible, and there will always be more. A Journey Toward Confessionalism When God poured out the Spirit on my cold dead heart in my early 20s, I immediately plugged into a church. The church affiliated with a network of other like-minded churches, but many considered it nondenominational. It was also charismatic or quasi-pentecostal. I was not discerning at the time, so I accepted the practice and theology of the church. One day I decided to read the church’s “Statement of Faith.” It took 3 minutes to finish. It was concise, but I am sure a Mormon or Jehovah’s Witness could affirm the statement. It wasn’t unorthodox, but it told me nothing about the theology of the church, along with what distinguishes this church from other churches. Instead, the focus is on values or vision. Now, I am down with values and vision, but values and vision should flow from theology. This church wanted its theology to fit its valu
John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease. (John 3:27-30) 107 Never does He omit or change His way. God never changes His system. Do you know that, brethren? Sure, you do. He never changes His system. He always keeps it going in continuity, the way He started. 108 He never dealt with a world, only under preaching, with one man, Noah. He never had four to go down and deliver them, or an organization, in the days of Moses. He never had two on the earth at the same time. Each one of us different from one another, our features, our make-up. God just gets a hold…All He needs is one person that He can get in control; that’s His example. He did it by Moses. He did it always. 109 When Elijah and Elisha was on earth, they both couldn’t stay the same time. One was taken, the other one got his mantle upon him. 110 When John came upon the earth, He was the manifested Word of God for that hour. We know that. He was God’s manifested Word. Because why? Isaiah said, “There would be a voice of one crying in the wilderness.” Malachi, the last prophet, said, “Behold, I send My messenger before My face, to prepare the way before the people.” Now, that was not Malachi 4; that was Malachi 3. John was Elijah of Malachi 3, not Malachi 4. 111 Because, when Malachi 4, when that prophecy comes forth, the earth is to be burnt with a fervent heat, and the righteous walk out in the Millennium, up over the ashes. And it never happened in the days of John. 112 In Matthew 11, we find out that when John sent disciples down to there where…John paid Jesus the—the least respect that he could, after he had already seen the sign over Him. And said, “That’s Him. He that told me in the wilderness to go baptize in water, said, ‘On Whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining, He’ll baptize with the Holy Ghost.’” He said he was sure of that. He saw the sign. Then after his eagle eye got filmed over, down in the prison, he said, “Go ask Him if He really is the One, or another.” That was disregarding the Word. 113 But Jesus knew that. He paid John a great respect. He said, “Who did you go out to see, a man dressed in soft raiment? They don’t handle the sword. They’re kiss the babies and bury the dead, they’re in kings’ palaces.” Said, “What did you go out to see, a reed shaken with any wind?” When one organization offer him a little more than the other, or some community, he’ll move to that community ’cause…? Not John. 114 Said, “What did you go to see, a prophet?” Said, “I say unto you, and greater than a prophet.” He was. He was the messenger of the covenant. He was the breach. He was the keystone between law and grace. “What’d you go out to see, a prophet? And I say unto you, more than a prophet.” 115 He said, “He was a bright and shining light, for a while.” Why? He was the Word made light. He was the Word manifested. 116 Then when He come on the scene, he said, “I must decrease; He must increase.” Two of them couldn’t stay at the same time. John had to go; Jesus remained. See? It’s always that way. 64-0206b - "Paradox" Rev. John 18: 33-37 We stand at the end of the church year. It is New Year’s Eve in New York City and the ball has gone down and we are here to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. Who is Jesus for us? Really for us? What is our no equivocation answer? He is King? If not, why not? I expect while the scriptures are NOT John 3: 15-17, I will get to John 3: 15-17, particularly 17. We can live according to the cynical values of Pilate or …. the choice is ours.

Who in the world needs a ONE HUNDRED Megapixel camera? Why? The camera is the Hasselblad H6D-100c Medium Format DSLR. Surfing through a photography Facebook group last week, I stumbled across a guy who owns one, and actually earns a living with it. Full disclosure: When I see someone online talking about their newest gear/fanciest widget/shiniest new whatnot, my initial reaction is to tune out. "It's not about the gear," I chant in my head, "it's about skill meeting art." This particular guy, though, I couldn't ignore. I've known Photographer John Hartman for a few years now. Maybe you've heard him on The PhotoTellers discuss light painting HERE, or marketing for Photographers HERE. Aside from his time on the show, I've shared a couple of meals with John, so I knew two things: John isn't the kind of guy to buy gear sheer for fun--he buys an INVESTMENT that he expects to show a (financial) return. John isn't trying to "buy" his way into great photography. Some guys buy expensive stuff to compensate for weak work. Not John. So I pinged John, 32 minutes later we connected on Skype. Today's episode is that conversation. What can you expect from today's episode? Obviously--John's opinion regarding the Photographer who can most benefit from this camera Why John says it's actually not about the megapixels The benefit of a 15 stop dynamic range Important insight for the landscape Photographer How John ran a test-run before he bought the camera Is it difficult to handle such large files? Can clients see a difference? Why does John print so much on metal prints? If you have questions for John, you want to see this camera in action, and/or you want to explore the world of light painting, join John's Fall tour of light painting workshops!
