Jamie Harson, owner and chef of Scratch Farm Kitchen, joins Discover Lafayette to share her commitment to serving the highest quality, fresh, locally sourced ingredients, in delicious combinations which fit the needs of any patron's dietary preferences or restrictions. Located at 2918 Johnston Street in the Winnwood Shopping Center, Scratch Farm Kitchen has a growing legion of followers who flock in to see the daily menu, set forth on a board next to the cash register, showcasing the meals of the day. Crowd favorites such as hash-based bowls, grit-based bowls, hamburgers, and a special dish known as Boudini, a biscuit topped with boudin, cheese, egg, pesto, kimchi and Jamie's homemade mayonnaise, are always in high demand. Jamie and her dedicated staff prepare from scratch all of the condiments accompanying meals, including their own ketchup, mustard, mayonaise, cheese, jams, and broths. They cure their own meats, and ferment products such as sauerkraut, kimchi, and sodas. The meals are colorful, delightful in their simplicity, and a testament to the virtues of eating fresh, local, wholesome foods prepared by loving hands. There is no online menu. Fresh ingredients steer the meals of the day....which is how things always used to be. "The best way to describe my food is to say it's street food inspired. It started on grills outside. It's American food, farm to table. I like to say my food is transparent and honest. We can answer questions about what is in our food. It is clean and simple food. Like Julia Child said, 'Food doesn't have to be great masterpieces, it just has to be simple and have good ingredients,'" says Jamie Harson, who relies upon local vendors to source items she does not make herself. Jamie is responsible for all the menu choices, creates the dishes offered, and prepares the soups herself. She speaks highly of her talented staff, who support her vision, saying, "They're the best. I have a dedicated and devoted team that I can trust. I walk in everyday and that's where I want to be. And, our clientele inspire me." "Scratch Farm Kitchen operates only on grills, no fryers and no ovens. Everything is fresh, assembled on the line in the front of the restaurant, with all the prep activity being conducted in the back kitchen. The menu changes seasonally, in keeping what can be sourced locally. And the menu has been a learning process, from experience through the years. "If things don't sell, they're off the menu", says Jamie. Jamie's journey in the food business began as a young child, helping out at her grandfather's farm in Duson. Picking blackberries and figs, as well as pecans on her hands and knees, or shucking corn, typically for eight hours a day. These weren't really her favorite activities. But that's what led her to appreciate the seasonal aspect of local food. After Jamie's grandfather died when she was eight, she lost contact with the idea of farming until she had dream at 18 years of age. Jamie says, "I was in Portland, Oregon, and had all these pictures of a farm in my head, and called my dad (former District Attorney Mike Harson) about it and he said, 'You're dreaming of the family farm.'" Jamie knew she'd be back there one day. Jamie didn't return to our area until she was 30, when she called her dad and said she was ready to go out to the family farm in Duson again. At the farm, which she called "Bon Temps Family Farms," she began raising her family (she now has four children), along with hundreds of pigs, chickens, ducks, goats, and other livestock. Jamie had no experience in farming or ranching, and says she "learned everything on Google!" Her passion from the beginning was starting from 'scratch.' Jamie says, "If I was going to raise chickens, I started when they were little." Jamie jokingly recalled one day when she drove home to the farm on Ridgefield in Duson and saw many state troopers outside of her property; all of her 300 plus pigs ...

What does the Bible teach us about race, ethnicity, unity, and justice? When Krista Bontrager (a conservative wife, homeschool mom, and Biola graduate) formed a close relationship with Monique Duson (a self-proclaimed former social justice warrior, international missionary, and Biola graduate), both women discovered that even in their shared love for Jesus, their views on these social issues couldn't have been more diametrically opposed. With a topic as (potentially) divisive, triggering, and racially charged as social justice, how exactly did Krista and Monique manage to develop a close friendship and redirect their prior experiences and individual perspectives to form a ministry dedicated to answering these questions from a biblical worldview? In this midweek podcast episode, CrossExamined's Staff Writer, Phoenix Hayes, sits down with Monique and Krista, founders of the Center for Biblical Unity, to discuss the inspiration behind their upcoming book 'Walking in Unity: Biblical Answers to Questions on Race and Racism.' As they share the origin story of their friendship, you'll see how walking and talking about their conflicting ideas strengthened their budding friendship and led them to a greater understanding of Critical Theory, including how it fundamentally clashes with the Gospel message. Listen as Phoenix, Monique, and Krista answer questions like: How did Krista and Monique's upbringing impact their view of American history and the person of Jesus? Should all churches place an emphasis on ethnic diversity? How does their approach in the book tackle the issue of CRT in a unique way? What are some common forms of critical theory and what is the collective goal of each one? How is CRT shaping conversations surrounding the Israel/Hamas conflict?   Krista and Monique's journey is proof that the Gospel still has the power to unite people from all walks of life, regardless of differences in age, ethnicity, and cultural backgrounds. This is a light-hearted conversation that will make you laugh, but also gives valuable insight into how to have tough conversations fruitfully. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more details on when 'Walking in Unity' will be available again for pre-order. Due to a minor setback, the original release date has been delayed and the new date is TBD. Lafayette Parish Sheriff Mark Garber joins Discover Lafayette to discuss his career and the scope of responsibilities of his office. He is the 27th Sheriff to serve Lafayette and has served in that capacity since January 2016. A native of Iota, Sheriff Garber graduated from LSU-BR and SMU Law School in Dallas. While in undergrad school, he worked with the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office as a dispatcher before moving up to corrections. He then worked as a game warden with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Sheriff Garber joined the City of Arlington, TX Police Department where he spent ten years, being chosen for the prestigious motorcycle unit. He also gained enforcement experience in patrol, traffic enforcement, field training, police sniper, and SWAT (Special Operations). It was while Sheriff Garber worked in Arlington that he realized he wanted a Ph.D. level education and pursued law studies. He jokingly recalled if he knew how hard it would be to juggle so many responsibilities he may not have chosen law school; but he did well and looked at each law course as a financial investment as he had to put himself through school, not qualifying for assistance due to his income as a police officer. Sheriff Garber next served in the U. S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations as a Civilian Special Agent, Criminal Investigator in Iraq, earning a Bronze Star Medal for his actions. His time in Iraq included deployment as a Battlefield Interrogator which put him in the war zone alongside frontline shooters. He recounted that he spent several tough weeks at Fort Huachuca in Arizona learning prescribed interrogation techniques and was able to meld them with his own experiences and talents from serving in law enforcement. On his service in Iraq, Sheriff Mark Garber said, "Your perspective changes when you work with people who are getting killed. You want to survive and you want to protect each other. That's what the goal is. But I never saw circumstances where torture would produce reliable information to give to a ground commander that could be trusted. I preferred other methods. My role was to give advice and to get senior leadership of al-Qaeda taken out." Upon returning to the U. S. Sheriff Garber continued service with the U. S. Secret Service, then returned to Lafayette where he served as an Assistant DA prosecuting felonies for the 15th JDC before being elected in 2015 to serve as Sheriff. This year, in 2022, Sheriff Garber became an FBI National Academy Graduate. Lafayette's Sheriff is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the Parish under the Louisiana Constitution. The Sheriff shares jurisdictions with the other cities' police departments (Broussard, Carencro, Duson, Lafayette, Scott, Youngsville.) Its Narcotics Division works extensively with the Lafayette City Police Department. When needed, the other police departments call upon the Sheriff for assistance and resources. "What are our core functions to serve the community? We incarcerate people. We investigate crimes. We answer calls for service. These are the three pillars of our service that directly influence and affect safety. Safety is our basic need and you can't engage in commerce or education until you are secure. That's our #1 concern." When Sheriff Garber took office in 2016, there were 900 prisoners being housed in the downtown Jail, a facility designed to hold about 300. "People were sleeping in unsecured common areas. The overcrowding led to health issues and staff morale was low. Garber implemented strict protocols to turn around the situation and improve safety for all. Today the jail holds approximately 600 prisoners and the Sheriff's Annex can hold about 150 individuals. We spoke of the backlog of untried criminal cases as a result of the COVID shutdown. Garber pointed out that Pre-Covid, these cases were already way behind, and then the district court was shut down for 18 months.

We all want to be against racism and injustice. Leading voices in the culture today tell us that to be "antiracist" and to work for social justice, we need to embrace a neo-Marxist ideology called "Critical Theory." This theory hides under the attractive label "antiracism," but beneath that hides a whole list of interconnected causes, including but not limited to Critical Race Theory (CRT), Gender Theory, Queer Theory, and so on. Unfortunately, many well-meaning Christians turn to these cultural "solutions" without knowing their deeply anti-Christian roots. Sadly, many of these Christians soon find themselves giving subtle support to socialism, abortion, and transgenderism. In this episode, we discuss the danger posed by the new woke ideology and encourage Christians to pursue biblical unity at a time of increasing division with our friends at the Center for Biblical Unity. Everything you need to know about this episode: Landing Page Website: Disciple Nations Alliance

Our guest today is Monique Duson. She grew up in South Central Lost Angeles, California and attended Biola University in Lost Angeles County where she majored in Sociology. She spent years in the social services profession. An Obama voter, and pro-choice on abortion, she was a missionary in South Africa for several years, returning in 2018 during the Trump administration. Monique spends nearly 3 hours with The Republican Professor podcast to talk about her story growing up in LA, about her changing attitudes toward what is sometimes called "Critical Race Theory". But we discuss as well what she calls the alternative CRT conclusions or assumptions which is Biblical in its explanations, directed toward unity in the image of God, as opposed racial unity. Monique, in her words, has grown in wisdom, has come to change some of her views from years past, and seeks to help others in their journey of discovery, growth, and change centered in how the Bible sees us. We talk about what is "the black community," what "representation" is for an individual for a group, how she feels about the US flag, how she feels about America, how she feels about the current Vice President versus how she felt about Senator Obama, and yes, I ask her what she thinks about Trump. We talk about what a "racist" is, what the harm in racism is (many don't seem to have thought carefully about this, nor seem to be prepared to give a clear, accurate answer to the question), about "Black Lives Matter," and whether the unborn black human being should have the same value, inherent worth, and dignity in the eyes of the law as George Floyd. The Center for Biblical Unity is a relatively recently established non-profit devoted to helping shed harmful assumptions or conclusions about race and disparity, and about what real justice is and what it is not. Critical Race Theory is being offered as a framework that will help with the work of racial healing.  Is this true?  Can Critical Race Theory bring racial healing?  Can it bring Biblical unity? Join Jonathan and his guest, Monique Duson of the Center for Biblical Unity, to peel back the layers of Critical Race Theory. Monique is a racial unity advocate and co-founder with Krista Bontrager of the Center for Biblical Unity. Monique spent two decades advocating for Critical Race Theory (CRT), but through a series of events, began to clearly see the contradictions of CRT with the historic Christian worldview. In this conversation, she helps shed light on the philosophies behind CRT, the role the Christian church should take in fighting racism and seeking racial healing, and the importance of Biblical discipleship in the journey toward Biblical unity. Monique Duson has a BA in Sociology from Biola University. She is working on a MA in Theology. She has a background in social service and children's ministry—working with a diverse array of under-served communities. Monique served as a Missionary to South Africa for over four years, serving children and teachers impacted by drugs, violence, and trauma. To ask Jonathan a question or to connect with the Candid community, visit https://LTW.org/CandidFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/candidpodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/candidpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/thecandidpod

In this interview we talk about her history and how she changed her mind on this issue. We talk about Critical Race Theory and why she thinks it is destructive in the church. We also talk about what the church should be doing on racial issues and how the church has failed in the past. We also talk about how we can engage with people in the church that disagree with us on this issue and how we can work towards bringing more light than heat on this issue. This was a great interview and I hope it will bless you.
