Welcome to the Vital Signs podcast, a project by nursing students for nursing students. In this episode, Bachelor of Nursing student Jen speaks with Nicole Graham, a mental health nurse and nursing educator. Nicole has experience as a Nursing Unit Manager, Assistant Director of Nursing, recruiter for Gold Coast University Hospital, Southern Cross University lecturer and Clinical Facilitator. She has worked in areas such as adult mental health rehabilitation, aged care, child and adolescent mental health and community nursing.
In my interview with Nicole Cromwell, we didn't talk a lot about the specifics of nursing, though Nicole has a long history of practicing in some of the most high-intensity, high-stress areas, including oncology, intensive care, Covid ICU, and flight nursing. The cumulative stress of this took a toll on her in the form of burnout. After losing a young patient in the ICU, an artist, Nicole discovered art as a healing modality and the ultimate form of self-care. What she didn't expect was that people who experience her art, feel the same emotions as she does while creating it: peace, serenity, and a renewal of their spirits. There is a huge body of research that cite the benefits of creating art in any form: decreased stress and anxiety, increased endorphins, and easier access to emotions, just to name a few. Nicole wants nurses and all healthcare professionals to reap the benefits for themselves. In this episode we interview Nicole Hamel who is a hiker, explorer and traveling nurse. Growing up in Massachusetts, getting outside to ski and snowboard on the White Mountains was a norm. She even hiked Mount Washington at only 6 years old. As Nicole got older, she lost interest in the outdoors - at least until college. A group of friends doing the New Hampshire 48 invited her on a hike. Uncomfortable, out of shape and slow - they didn't invite Nicole on another hike. Little did she know this would spark something within her. She soon found herself hiking regularly, building her strength and always in search of the next trail. Nicole couldn't get enough of how she felt both mentally and physically after a hike. The best part? Being a traveling nurse let her explore new cities, hike new trails and meet new people. The flexibility also allowed her to take months off at a time, which was perfect for her dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail; which she completed in 2022. If you've ever wondered how nursing and adventure can go hand in hand, then this one's for you! Life in Motion is brought to you by Actual Outdoors. What's UP? On today's episode Laura Sextro, CEO of The Unity Project, talks to Nicole Sirotek, a registered nurse who travelled to New York City at the beginning of the pandemic and became a voice for the patients who needlessly lost their lives in inner city hospitals. After a video of her begging for help to save her patient's life went viral, a target was painted on her back. In this episode, she shares heart-wrenching stories of patients she tried to save. The irresponsible “one size fits all” approach and medical mismanagement that led to so many deaths. For most of us, a labor and delivery nurse is an essential person in our healthcare team during the birth of our baby at the hospital. Because of this important role, we wanted to bring on a labor and delivery nurse to answer all of your questions about what you should expect in the hospital, your relationship with your nurse, and so much more. Nicole is not only a nurse, but she is also the founder of a really cool company that makes air-filtering protective infant covers, which we discuss. We hope you enjoy this one! Nicole Noar is a mother of 2 boys and a devoted wife. Nicole is a labor and delivery nurse certified in inpatient obstetrics and a lactation consultant with over 13 years of experience in her field. After the birth of her first son, Nicole designed a car seat cover and nursing cover with a pocket on the front for a custom removable medical grade filter made from medical mask material for her son to keep him protected. She has since patented the design and started a company. The Snuggle Shield™ LUXE Protection™ Air Filtering Infant Cover is a one of a kind product designed to protect her own babies and she is so excited to share it. We are joined today by Nicole Sirotek, founder of American Frontline Nurses, a new patient advocacy group. She tells horror stories of people injured by the clot shots being denied heart transplants for not getting boosters. Also, there is so much malcare, starvation, medical kidnapping, and discrimination. People are being denied entry into medical health facilities for not getting the shots. Navigating Nursing School With Your Nursing Tutor (Help and Support for Nursing Students)
Hey there! This is Nurse Nicole, founder of Your Nursing Tutor and the VIP Tutoring Membership. Today, I'm doing something a little bit different on the podcast that I think you're going to love...I'm going to let you be a “fly on the wall” for a recent Tutoring Consult that I did for one of my VIP Tutoring Members, Amber! Amber's nursing journey has taken her longer than she originally hoped, with several unexpected twists and turns. One of those “twists and turns” included not one, but TWO previous failures with Dosage Calculations. These failures resulted in a 10-year pause from nursing school while she worked as an LPN instead, even though her ultimate goal was to become a registered nurse. But there's good news, of course!! Because today she'll be sharing how she was able to transform her Dosage Calculations weaknesses into strengths, even surprising her instructor by achieving 100% on all her Dosage Calculations after becoming a VIP Tutoring Member for only a month. You'll also get a peek into how Amber manages nursing school while also balancing a full-time job AND taking care of her family and teenage boys. Plus, she'll be sharing her honest thoughts and feelings about the final grade she earned in her LPN to RN bridge class. As always, if you'd like to read the transcript for today's episode, or find ANY of the links that I mention, you can always go to my website at www.YourNursingTutor.com/episode55 to get that information. Navigating Nursing School With Your Nursing Tutor (Help and Support for Nursing Students)
Hey there! This is Nurse Nicole, founder of Your Nursing Tutor and the VIP Tutoring Membership. Today, I'm resharing one of the 4 most popular podcast episodes of 2021, just in case you missed it. In today's episode, I'll be telling you the 3 reasons why otherwise passionate, motivated students who aspire to become nurses...will FAIL. And I'll be dispelling the myths that nursing students fail because they're lazy, or not smart enough, or just not “cut out” to be a nurse...none of those are actually the most common causes that I see for nursing students failing. And the good news is that the REAL reasons are things that you can take control of and do something about! So you can have hope that it IS possible to improve your grades if you're already in a situation where you're failing, or even to make sure that you never have to be in that situation in the first place. As always, if you'd like to read the transcript for today's episode, or find any of the links that I mention, you can always go to my website at www.YourNursingTutor.com/episode53 to get that information. Hey there! This is Nurse Nicole, founder of Your Nursing Tutor and the VIP Tutoring Membership, and today I'm resharing one of the 4 most popular podcast episodes of 2021, just in case you haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. Today's episode is my answer to the commonly asked question, “How can you memorize everything you need to in nursing school when there's so much information?” I'll be giving you my most helpful tips for how to reduce your overwhelm and make your memorization in nursing school a lot more manageable, by telling you the difference between information you NEED to memorize, versus information that you really need to find a different way to remember. And of course, I'll be giving suggestions for alternative ways to study, too! I'll also be sharing my hard and fast rule for the ONLY situation where you should be making flashcards...and I'm going to clue you in right now, that I'm not going to be saying drug cards. Also, if you've ever wondered why it is that you can usually narrow down your answer choices to 2 options...but then always pick the wrong answer, I'll be giving you the explanation for that, too.
