Ever feel like your emotions have the steering wheel—one moment you're grounded, the next you're overwhelmed, and you're left wondering what just happened? In today's episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on emotional mastery—what it truly means, why it's the key to lasting transformation, and how a simple daily practice can shift the way you navigate stress, overwhelm, and uncertainty. This isn't about suppressing how you feel or trying to “fix” yourself. It's about leading your emotions instead of letting them lead you—so they no longer dictate your choices, energy, or success. If you've ever found yourself stuck in cycles of frustration, reactive moods, or a low vibrational state you can't quite explain… this is for you.Because the way you hold, process, and lead your emotions changes everything—from the way you move through challenges to the way you create the life you desire. We had a real aha moment — the kind that hits when you're bone-tired, frustrated, and feeling like life is just happening to you instead of you leading it. We were checking all the "healthy living" boxes — eating right, working hard, staying productive — but still felt stuck. Exhausted. Out of sync with our own bodies. That's when everything shifted. We realized we were missing the most basic elements of health — and not just us, but our clients, families, and even our kids. So we got back to the fundamentals. We call it the OWNER framework: Oxygen, Water, Nutrition, Enough sleep, and Respecting our bodies. Key Takeaways:Breathing is where it all begins. Most of us mouth-breathe without realizing it, especially at night — and it's wrecking our sleep, focus, and even our kids' development. We learned that nasal breathing filters the air, improves oxygen flow, and reduces anxiety. Total game-changer. Water isn't just hydration — it's detox, digestion, and nutrient transport. We were shocked to learn that mouth breathing can cause us to lose up to 40% more water, leaving us chronically dehydrated without knowing it. And not all water is created equal: pH balance, filtration, and minerals matter. Nutrition today isn't what it was for our grandparents. Our soil is depleted, our bodies are overloaded with toxins, and our digestion is struggling. We started treating food like medicine — not just fuel — and focused on what helps our bodies thrive, not just what keeps us full. Sleep is powerful. Lack of quality, uninterrupted sleep throws our hormones, metabolism, and mood into chaos. We stopped glorifying the hustle and started respecting our bodies' need for real rest. Respecting our bodies means listening to symptoms. Bleeding gums, hair loss, mood swings, weight gain — it's all feedback. We quit ignoring the signs and started owning our health, our choices, and our outcomes. We also talked about reprogramming our brains. Our thoughts shape our biology. If we keep replaying old scripts of “not enough” or “it won't work for me,” our bodies believe it. Instead, we're now thinking with intention, visualizing our healthiest selves, and creating habits that align with the life we actually want. This isn't magic — it's neuroscience. And it starts with daily repetition and belief in our worthiness. We don't wait for a diagnosis anymore. We own our health now — and that's changed everything. Have you ever found yourself mindlessly snacking while scrolling through your phone, or grabbing a few extra bites while cleaning up after dinner? These small, seemingly harmless habits tend to creep back into our daily routines without us even realizing it. Over time, they add up—leading to unexpected weight gain and frustration.
Overwhelmed by your to-do list? I was too—until I turned to AI. In this episode of the Bringing Business to Retail podcast, I share how I opened Asana and was met with more tasks than I could handle in a year (yep, a full year). Instead of spiraling into busywork, I turned to my custom-built ChatGPT for support. What happened next surprised me. You'll hear how I used AI to ask myself four game-changing questions that helped me clear the mental clutter, prioritize what actually matters, and realign my work with my long-term goals. I'll also dive into how tools like the Eisenhower Matrix and calendar blocking helped me identify tasks I shouldn't even be doing. Whether you're running a business, leading a team, or just drowning in digital post-its, this episode will give you practical, strategic tools to take back control—and get back to deep work that truly moves the needle.

Becoming Your Own Body Image StandardIn this episode of The Daryl Perry Podcast, Daryl challenges the way we think about body image and encourages listeners to become their own body standard. The way you see yourself has been shaped by years of external messaging, but what if you took control of that narrative? What if you stopped letting marketers, social media, and outdated beauty standards dictate how you feel about your body?Daryl breaks down how body image is influenced by the media we consume, the messages we've internalized, and the self-talk we engage in daily. He explores:Where body image standards come from and why they constantly changeHow marketing shapes the way we see ourselves without us even realizing itWhy self-talk is the most powerful reinforcement tool for confidenceHow to reframe your mindset to see yourself with appreciation instead of comparisonThe role of media consumption in shaping body perception and how to take control of itWhy self-acceptance is a daily practice, not a final destinationThe process of becoming your own body standard starts with a decision—a choice to appreciate what you see in the mirror and to stop chasing standards designed to sell you something. Daryl shares insights from his own journey, discussing how he shifted from trying to fit into societal expectations to defining his own.If you've ever struggled with body image or felt like you were constantly trying to live up to impossible expectations, this episode is for you. Please share this episode with anyone you think would be interested in listening to it.Visit darylperrypodcast.com for links to the show page on each of the major podcast directories. 221 - Don't Let Anyone Push Your Buttons In this episode, I share one of the most powerful lessons I ever learned—from a book I discovered as a child. Wayne Dyer's Your Erroneous Zones completely changed how I saw emotions, reactions, and the way people try to manipulate us. This book helped me navigate a tough home life, stand up to bullies, and, most importantly, stop letting others control how I felt. I explore the emotional traps that keep people stuck—anger, worry, guilt, insecurity, and perfectionism—and how to break free from them. The biggest takeaway? No one can push your buttons unless you let them. Learning this truth gave me the confidence to take charge of my emotions, and in this episode, I'll share how you can do the same. The Book That Changed My PerspectiveI was a little kid in a chaotic home when I first saw Wayne Dyer on PBS talking about Your Erroneous Zones. Something about his message clicked. Even as a child, I realized that emotions weren't just things that happened to me—I had control over them. The Emotional Traps That Keep Us StuckDyer identifies five major thought patterns that hold us back: Anger – Letting frustration control you instead of responding calmly.Worry – Stressing over things that are outside your control.Guilt – Staying stuck in past mistakes instead of making amends and moving on.Insecurity – Constant self-doubt that keeps you from taking action.Perfectionism – Thinking you need to be 100% ready before you start something.I share how I struggled with these emotions and the small steps I took to overcome them. The Most Life-Changing Lesson: No One Can Push Your ButtonsThis was the biggest revelation: people only have power over you if you let them. I saw firsthand how my father emotionally manipulated my mother. But when I learned to control my reactions, he stopped targeting me. If someone is making you feel bad, it's because you're giving them permission to do so. How to Take Back Control of Your EmotionsIf you struggle with reacting emotionally to situations, try these strategies: -Pause Before Reacting – Take five seconds to ask, Is this worth my peace of mind?-Reframe the Situation – Most people's negativity is about them, not you.-Use Humor – Responding with a joke can take the power away from insults.-Practice Inner Silence – Sometimes, the best response is no response.-Find Compassion – Understanding why someone acts a certain way can help you detach. Takeaways:-Your emotions belong to you. No one else can make you feel something unless you allow them to.-Taking action is the antidote to fear. Perfectionism, insecurity, and doubt all shrink when you start moving forward.-When life squeezes you, what's inside of you comes out. If you don't like how you react under pressure, it's time to work on what's inside.-The more you control your emotions, the freer you become. People lose their ability to manipulate you when you stop reacting.]If you've ever felt like someone else has control over your emotions, it's time to take that power back. By shifting your mindset and making small changes, you can free yourself from anger, worry, guilt, and insecurity. https://startwithsmallsteps.com/221-take-control-of-your-emotions/ Jill's Links https://abetterlifeinsmallsteps.com https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsJillday https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsAI https://www.youtube.com/@startwithsmallstepspodcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/smallstepspod https://twitter.com/schmern Email the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.com

So whatever emotion you have, it can be turned into a mental disorder. So if you're shy and most of us get anxious in public speaking or around other people, well, you don't. You're not shy. You have a mental disorder called social anxiety disorder. And that really, excuse the language, pisses me off when they do that, because you've taken a very common problem and turned it into a mental disease, and then people think they need some pill for that. And to me, that's meaningless and it's, it's wrong.” ~Dr. David Burns, Adjunct Clinical Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page.
