For women in midlife, navigating the flood of “miracle” serums, fear-based marketing, and filtered influencers can feel like a full-time job. In this episode of The Skin Real, Dr. Mary Alice Mina sits down with dermatologist Dr. Rey Hamidi, founder of SkinSmart, to bring clarity back to skincare. They talk about why so much of what you see online is misleading, how to spot real credentials, and what truly works for healthy, radiant skin without wasting money or confidence. They talk about: - Why over half of skincare content online isn't based on science. - How to spot fake “board-certified” experts. - The SMART way to think about skin — focusing on fundamentals, proven actives, whole-body wellness, and professional care. Key Takeaways: Credentials matter. “Board-certified dermatologist” ≠ “board-certified physician.” Always verify expertise. Sunscreen saves skin. There's zero evidence linking sunscreen to cancer. It's your best defense against damage and aging. Over 50% of skincare content online is inaccurate. Don't mistake popularity for credibility. Your skin reflects your lifestyle. Nutrition, sleep, and stress balance all affect how you age. Start with fundamentals. A gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and daily SPF > ten trendy serums. Pair products + procedures. True results come from strategy, not single steps. Follow fewer voices. Choose one or two trusted experts to avoid overwhelm. In this episode of Derms and Conditions, host James Q. Del Rosso, DO, welcomes Patti Farris, MD, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Tulane University, for a timely conversation on photoprotection and sunscreen. As new concerns surface among patients, they provide an up-to-date perspective on UV exposure, formulation science, and patient counseling. Dr Farris explains the critical role of UVA radiation, which penetrates deeper into the dermis than UVB and is a major driver of photoaging and skin cancer risk. Unlike UVB, UVA is harder to block because many chemical filters only partially cover this spectrum. She also reviews the controversies surrounding oxybenzone, discussing both endocrine disruption concerns and its debated link to coral reef bleaching, emphasizing the gap between laboratory studies and real-world relevance. The discussion then turns to mineral sunscreens, which have gained popularity amid growing social media skepticism about chemical filters. While they provide strong UVA protection, cosmetic acceptability remains a significant challenge, especially for patients with skin of color due to the persistent issue of white cast. Newer innovations, including the addition of antioxidants, further expand protection by addressing visible light–induced damage. They highlight one example of an advanced formulation that pairs mineral filters with vitamin E to boost UVA defense and improve tolerability across all Fitzpatrick skin types. Finally, they reflect on generational differences in patient counseling. While older patients may prioritize cancer prevention, younger patients often respond more to messaging about photoaging and skin preservation, making it vital to tailor communication strategies. Tune in to the full episode to hear Dr Farris and Dr Del Rosso explore how dermatologists can navigate evolving sunscreen science, address patient concerns with confidence, and make practical recommendations that resonate across age groups and skin types.

In Australia Ultra Violette Lean Screen SPF 50+ was voluntarily recalled following inconsistencies in its sun protection factor. Tests showed it had SPF results rating anywhere from four to 64. Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration says the base formula is used in numerous sunscreens and further tests show it is unlikely to have an SPF greater than 21. It's also raised concerns about a testing lab used by a number of sunscreen makers. Consumer NZ senior research and test writer, Belinda Castles spoke to Lisa Owen.

Double board-certified in Facial Plastic Surgery and ENT, Dr. Ponsky specializes in natural facial rejuvenation. She discusses how hormonal shifts impact the face and what women can do about it.The Hormonal Impact on AgingDr. Ponsky notes that a sharp drop in hormones around menopause can feel like an "acute switch" in aging. Collagen Loss: Women can lose up to 30% of their collagen within five years around menopause, followed by a 2% loss each year. Structural Changes: Low estrogen affects receptors throughout the skin and bone. This causes skin to become coarser, fat to descend, and even facial bones (like the jaw and areas around the nose) to atrophy, which can flatten the brow arch.Prevention and Maintenance: The "Car Tune-Up"Aging gracefully is about slowing down the process, which Dr. Ponsky compares to constant maintenance on a car. Proactive Care: Genetic predispositions mean some women benefit from early surgical prevention (like brow lifts or fat transfer). Lifestyle: Rigorous skincare, sun protection, and avoiding repetitive motions (like drinking through straws) are crucial for maintenance. The Role of HRT: Dr. Ponsky is a firm believer in Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), even starting in perimenopause, to slow the loss of muscle mass and bone density (including in the face).Treatment Options Fillers: These are volumizing agents (like hyaluronic acid) that replace lost volume; they do not lift. Dr. Ponsky cautions against overuse, as too much filler can distort muscle movement. Never Too Late: For those who missed the prevention window, aggressive treatments like deeper lasers and fat transfer can still yield great results, combined with a commitment to nutrition and a long-term care program.Dr. Ponsky reminds women that given we are living longer, tending to our bodies is necessary. It's not vanity; it's ensuring a high quality of life long after menopause.

Grace Over Grind: Sabbath Rest and Spiritual Sunscreen for Your Soul

On today's Together 4 Good, Pastor Nate pulls together two of our most recent conversations into one big theme: how to stop measuring yourself by the grind and start resting in God's peace.First up: hustle culture. You know the drill: more hours, more hustle, more “look what I did.” Nate shares some personal stories (yes, including his grandpa's trusty steel lunchbox) and the reminder that while hard work is good, it's not what gives us our worth. That's where Sabbath comes in, God's gift to remind us that we're already loved. Then we shift gears into what happens after you step off the hamster wheel: how do you actually protect that peace? Enter “spiritual sunscreen.” In a world that won't stop shouting at you to buy, produce, and perform, God flips the script with grace first, then gratitude.✨ You'll hear:Why hustle culture always leads to burnout and despair. How Sabbath is resistance against being defined by what you do.The Exodus story as a guide for a new way of living. What it means to put on “spiritual sunscreen” and guard your peace. Why grace—not hustle—is always God's starting point.

Sunscreen is back in the spotlight, with groundbreaking new research showing a link between daily sunscreen use and vitamin D deficiency. Earlier this year, several sunscreen brands were pulled from shelves over conflicting SPF testing results. Now, new Australian research has shown sunscreen use can also affect our vitamin D levels. In this episode of The Briefing, Natarsha Belling is joined by the author of the study, Professor Rachel Neale, who unpacks the new findings and explains why we should still be using sunscreen. Headlines: At least one person has been killed and 7 others have been injured after a gas leak at a Sydney restaurant, guidelines for the under-16 social media ban have been unveiled, and the chief executive of one of Australia’s biggest retail groups has been sacked over an alleged relationship with a senior staff member. In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Molly Hales discuss the growing trend of young children using anti-aging skincare products, influenced by social media and influencers. Dr. Hales highlights the concerns about the rise in young patients with skin reactions to these products. These young users often apply multiple products with potentially irritating ingredients (and often multiple active ingredients or multiple products with the same active ingredient). Dr. Hales also emphasizes the need for basic skincare routines for young users, with a focus on sunscreen, and calls for better education and regulation to protect these children.     Key Takeaways: Girls as young as 9 are increasingly using antiaging creams geared to older women. These products contain ingredients and are designed for more mature skin rather than youthful skin.  Sunscreen is the number one recommended product for people of all ages (except babies under 6 months). This is also not the most commonly used product among social media influencers with their viral skincare routines.  There are three main risks associated with using improper skincare products, with the main risk being irritation (irritant contact dermatitis).  Brands get more attention and recognition by sending free products to influencers for videos, reaching a wider (and younger) audience than they might otherwise.  "It seems like, as more younger and younger people are putting more and more products on their skin, that there is more and more skin allergy that's happening and that's going to follow kids around for the rest of their lives." —  Dr. Molly Hales   Episode References:  Pediatric Skin Care Regimens on TikTok - Molly Hales, MD, PhD - https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article-abstract/156/1/e2024070309/202103/Pediatric-Skin-Care-Regimens-on-TikTok    Connect with Dr. Molly Hales: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/molly-hales-987b6410/     Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. On this episode of The Skin Real Podcast, I speak with Dr. Christie Regula, Mohs surgeon and founder of SunSmart Pittsburgh, about why community-level sun protection may be the key to reducing skin cancer rates. Her nonprofit installs free sunscreen dispensers in public parks, fields, and recreation centers—because no one should have to choose between UV damage and enjoying the outdoors. This conversation dives into what's actually keeping people from reapplying SPF (hint: it's not laziness), the logistics of maintaining sunscreen stations year-round, and what we can learn from global leaders like Australia. Key Takeaways: Sunburns, especially in childhood, drastically increase melanoma risk The real-life barriers to sun safety (spoiler: it's not laziness) What a public sunscreen dispenser program actually looks like Why the goal is accessibility, not perfection Simple ways to bring sun protection to your own local community Why skin health is a we issue, not just a me issue This episode is your reminder that sun safety isn't about being perfect—it's about making it easier to protect the skin you're in. Coral reefs are often called the “rainforests of the sea.” They provide habitat for an incredible diversity of marine life, protect shorelines from storms, and support the livelihoods of millions of people around the world. But reefs are also among the most threatened ecosystems on Earth. Rising ocean temperatures, pollution, and coastal development all play a role in their decline—and now, research shows that something as ordinary as the sunscreen we put on at the beach could be part of the problem.Certain chemical ingredients found commonly in sunscreens have been linked to coral bleaching, genetic damage in marine species, and even harm to the tiny phytoplankton that form the base of the ocean's food chain. Some places, including Hawai‘i, have already banned these types of sunscreens in an effort to protect fragile reef ecosystems. But with labels like “reef-safe” popping up everywhere, it's not always clear what's marketing spin and what's truly safe for our oceans. To help us untangle the science and policy behind sunscreen and reef health, we're joined by Katie Day, Surfrider Foundation's Senior Manager of Science and Policy. Katie grew up on a small island in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where her love for the ocean first began. With a Master's Degree in Environmental Science and Management, she brings expertise in climate policy, water quality, and habitat management. At Surfrider, she helps guide national campaigns with the latest science, leads federal advocacy efforts, and heads up the organization's annual Coastal Recreation Hill Day in Washington, D.C. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/outdoor.minimalist.book/Website: https://www.theoutdoorminimalist.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@theoutdoorminimalistBuy Me a Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/outdoorminimalistListener Survey: https://forms.gle/jd8UCN2LL3AQst976-----------------Surfrider FoundationWebsite: https://www.surfrider.org/Reef-Safe Sunscreen Guide: https://www.surfrider.org/news/surfrider-foundations-2025-reef-friendly-sunscreen-guideInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/SurfriderFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/surfrider/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/surfrider-foundation/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/SurfriderFoundation
